Dr. Harry T. Kutsunis, 89, of Rock Island, died Saturday, January 30, 2010 at his home. Funeral services are 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday at St. George Greek Orthodox Church, Rock Island. Burial is at Memorial Park cemetery, Rock Island. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home, 3030 7th Ave., Rock Island, where a memorial prayer services will be at 7:00 p.m. Memorials may be made to St. George Greek Orthodox Church, the Quad City Symphony, Heifer International P.O. Box 8050, Little Rock, AR 72203-8050, or to a favorite charity. Dr. Kutsunis was born on February 6, 1920 in East Moline, a son of Theodore and Adamantia Gardeakos Kutsunis. He married Stella Grevas on August 31, 1947 in Moline. She died January 11, 1997. He was educated in East Moline Schools and graduated from St. Ambrose College, Davenport. He attended Loyola University, Chicago and graduated from the University Of Illinois College Of Medicine in 1944. Dr. Kutsunis served his internship at Cook County Hospital, Chicago. He served in the U.S. Army Medical Corp during WW II, which included serving 18 months in Japan as a public health officer in the military government, leaving service with the rank of captain. Dr. Kutsunis began his private practice in general medicine in Rock Island in 1948. He later provided medical services to the Farmall Plant of the International Harvester Corp., Rock Island. He served as president of the medical staffs of St. Anthony’s and Franciscan Hospitals, Rock Island, and also served as president of the Rock Island County Medical Society. He served as a member of the Rock Island County Board of Health and member of the board of directors of St. Anthony’s and Franciscan Hospitals. Dr. Kutsunis served as medical advisor to the Rock Island Visiting Nurse Association and was a board member of the Community Mental Health Center of Rock Island and Mercer Counties. He was a member of St. George Greek Orthodox Church, where he was a past board member. He served as team physician for Rock Island High School athletic teams in the 1950’s and 1960’s and served as chairman of the Health Task Force for the Rock Island Model Cities Program in the 1960’s and 1970’s. Dr. Kutsunis served on the policy board and was a former board member of Project Now, serving also on the Public Health Policy Committee. In 1979, along with Drs. Stockdale and Cunningham, set up a physicians rotating call system to meet the needs of persons without doctors. This system later became the model that was followed throughout the United States. He was also a member of the Rock Island Arsenal Golf Club and enjoyed reading, photography and golf. Survivors include his daughters and son-in-law, Deborah Kutsunis, Rock Island and Rebecca and Ron Skrabacz, Bartlett, Ill.; grandchildren (and spouses), Rebecca (Brian) Becker, Rock Island, Nicole (Joe) Schroeter, Algonquin, Ill., Sarah Skrabacz (Neal Fuchs), Bartlett and Jacob Skrabacz, Santa Barbara, Calif.; great-grandchildren, Nathaniel Becker, Rock Island and Brandon Schroeter, Algonquin; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; brother and sister-in-law, George and Georgia Kutsunis; and sister and brother-in—law, Bess and Dan Mihal. The family wishes to thank all of the family, friends and caregivers that provided care to Harry in his final days.

Ann Kelly, 82, of Rock Island, formerly of Murphysboro, TN, died Thursday, January 28, 2010 at Trinity Medical Center, Rock Island. A Memorial Mass will be 10 am, Monday at St. Pius X Catholic Church, Rock Island. There will be no visitation. Inurnment will be in the Andalusia cemetery. Memorials may be made to St. Pius X Catholic Church, Rock Island. Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home, 3030-7th Avenue, Rock Island is assisting the family with the arrangements. Ann was born January 7, 1928 in Cudahy, Wisconsin, the daughter of Paul Hrbacek and Francis Peckcel Hrbacek. She married LeRoy T. Kelly in March of 1947 in Wisconsin. Ms. Kelly was a homemaker. She enjoyed reading books and spending time with her family. Survivors include her children and their spouses, Cindy and Doug Hayes, Taylor Ridge, Tom and Ester Kelly, Olathe, Kansas, Pat and Trisha Kelly, Greenville, N. C.; seven grandchildren; and three great granddaughters.

Marion R. Wilson, 95, of Rock Island, died Friday, January 29, 2010 at Trinity Medical Center, West Campus, Rock Island. Funeral services will be 1:00 p.m. Tuesday at the Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home, 3030 7th Ave., Rock Island. Burial is at Memorial Park cemetery, Rock Island. Visitation is 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Memorial Christian Church, Moline. The former Marion Patterson was born on October 4, 1914 in Rock Island, the daughter of Frank and Sylvia Graves Patterson. She married Floyd A. Burgess in 1937 in Rock Island. Marion later marries F. James Wilson in 1967 in Rock Island. He died in 1996. She had worked in the Rock Island County Treasurer’s Office and in earlier years, co-owned and operated the Strecker and Lewis Co., Rock Island. Marion was a life member of Memorial Christian Church and also a member of the Hauberg Senior Citizens. She enjoyed playing Bridge and traveling. Survivors include her daughter, Betty Plank, Silvis; granddaughters and their husbands, Kimberly and Kevin Roesner, Bettendorf and Susan and Col. Todd Freece, Honolulu, Hawaii; great-grandchildren, Bryce, and Tracy Roesner and Sarah, Christian, Emma and Rachel Freece. She was preceded in death by her husband; brother, Charles F. Patterson and son-in-law, Robert Plank.

Diane was born September 12, 1948 in Milan, IL, the daughter of Norman R. “Sonny” Berg, II and Betty Hall Berg. Ms. Berg worked as a waitress at the Davenport Elks Lodge for 30 years. Survivors include her parents, daughter, Kelly Berg and her fiancé, Brent Kauffman, Coralville, IA; brothers and spouses, David and Candy Berg, Dixon, IA, Stephen and Dorothy Berg, Rock Island, Kevin Berg, Rock Island, Marty and Kathy Berg, Moline; a sister and her spouse, Kristine Kemper and Jim Crouch, Phoenix, AZ; and several nieces and nephews. Diane was preceded in death by a brother, Norman R. “Robbie” Berg, III.

Frieda "Babe" Denger

Frieda “Babe” Denger, 90, of Davenport, died Thursday, January 28, 2010 at Genesis Medical Center, West Campus, Davenport. Funeral services are 11:00 a.m. on Monday at the Tri City Jewish Center, Rock Island. Burial is at the National cemetery, Arsenal Island. There is no visitation. Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home, Rock Island is assisting the family with arrangements. Memorials may be made to the Tri City Jewish Center. The former Frieda Leibowitz was born on May 5, 1919 in Theresa, NY, a daughter of Reuben and Lillian Feitleberg Leibowitz. She married Charles Denger in 1962. He died November 24, 1989. Frieda owned the former Park Café in East Davenport for many years. She was a member of the Tri City Jewish Center, Rock Island. Frieda enjoyed playing Bingo. Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Joel and Kay Novak, Des Moines, Ia.; grandchildren, Lisa Novak (Ashley), Jolie Novak (Alan), Jason Novak and Joshua Novak; and great grandchildren, Sasha and Sadie. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and sisters, Lena, Cecile and Sadie.
Interment: Monday February 01, 2010 at National cemetery, Rock Island, Ill.

Grace M. Wilson, 87, of Milan, died Wednesday, March 19, 2008 at Trinity Medical Center, West Campus, Rock Island. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday at St. Ambrose Catholic Church, Milan. Burial will be in the National cemetery, Arsenal Island. Visitation is 3 to 7 p.m. Monday at the Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home, 201 E. 4th Ave., Milan, where a Christian wake service will be held at 6:30 p.m. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association. The former Grace Kemp was born on March 26, 1920 in Rock Island, a daughter of Frank and Esther Gannon Kemp. She married James F. Wilson on August 31, 1940 in Rock Island. Grace worked for Illinois Bell Telephone from 1938 – 1940. She was a member of St. Ambrose Catholic Church, Milan. Grace enjoyed fishing, camping and playing cards, especially Bridge and 500. Survivors include her husband, Jim; daughter and son-in-law, Marietta and Louie Petersen, Rock Island; son and daughter-in-law, John R. “Jack” and Rosemary Wilson, Moline; eight grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren and a brother-in-law, J. Daniel Widdel, Milan. She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Anna Widdel and Louise Peirce and a brother, Clement Kemp.

Dena F. Goins, 69, of Milan, died Wednesday December 3, 2008 at Rock Island Health and Rehab Center. Services will be 10:00a.m., Thursday at Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home, Milan. Visitation will be 4:00-7:00p.m., Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Rock Island Memorial Park cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Shriner’s. Dena was born on February 24, 1939 in Macomb, IL, the daughter of George and Ruth (Bennett) Hall. She married Louis Goins April 27, 1957 in Macomb. He preceded her in death on April 11, 1990. She was employed by Jaydon of Milan for 36 years as a stocker. She enjoyed needlepoint, camping and traveling. She loved to spend time with her family and friends, especially her grandchildren. Dena is survived by her daughter and son in law, Mary Elizabeth and Robert Thomas Frees, Milan; grandchildren, Brandy Knotts, Kirkland, IL and Thomas Frees, Milan; great grandchildren, Aaron Knotts, Hailey Knotts and Paige Frees; sister, Eleanor Pennarola, Connecticut and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Marion.

Walter H. "Wally" Thorpe

Walter H. “Wally” Thorpe, 63, of Milan, passed away Monday, April 20, 2009 at Trinity Medical Center, West Campus, Rock Island. Funeral services are 11:00 a.m. on Thursday at First Lutheran Church, Rock Island. Burial is at the National cemetery, Arsenal Island, where military honors will be presented by Moline American Legion Post 246. Visitation is 3 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home, 201 E. 4th Ave., Milan. Memorials may be made to First Lutheran Church. Wally was born on September 25, 1945 in Rock Island, a son of Charles F. and Margaret F. Sheil Thorpe. He married Janice L. Swanson on June 4, 1966 in Andover, Ill. He was small business administrator at the Rock Island Arsenal. Wally retired in 2007 after 36 years of service. He was a U.S. Navy veteran. Wally was a member of First Lutheran Church, Rock Island. He enjoyed Saturday breakfasts with his brothers at the Scamper In, was a Chicago Cubs fan and especially loved his family and spending time with his grandchildren. Wally loved children and they loved him. Survivors include his wife, Janice; daughters and sons-in-law, Cari and Rich Wehrheim, Bettendorf, Angie and Bruce Harrell, Davenport and Melissa Thorpe, Davenport; grandchildren, Michael, Abigayle and Alexa Wehrheim and Kelsey and Aaron Harrell; his mother, Margaret Thorpe, Taylor Ridge; brothers and sisters, James Thorpe, Bettendorf, Anthony Thorpe, Taylor Ridge, Charles Thorpe, East Moline, Daniel Thorpe, Rock Island, William Thorpe, Mossyrock, Wash., Margaret Ann Harmon, Bastrop, Tex., Kathy Fordyce, Andalusia, Frances Krahl, Milan, Timothy Thorpe, Silvis and Richard Thorpe, Milan; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Charles.

Services for Mrs. Caldwell will be 10 am, Friday at the Wheelan- Pressly Funeral Home, 3030-7th Avenue, Rock Island. Visitation will be Thursday from 4-7 pm at the funeral home. Burial will be in Oakwood cemetery, Geneseo. Memorials may be made to the family for a memorial fund that will be established at a later date. Karen was born December 26, 1942 in Moline, the daughter of Emil L. and Myra Lewis Anderson. Ms. Caldwell was a homemaker. Earlier in her career she had worked for Josephson’s Jewelers, Sneff Jewelers and Holland Jewelers. Karen enjoyed gardening, flowers, shopping and going to the movies. Survivors include her children, Brad L. Lueders, Rock Island, Kevin R. Lueders and his wife, Troy, East Moline; grandchildren, Ashley Lyle, Parkview, Iowa, Joshua Lueders, Rock Island; a sister and brother in law, Joyce and John Chavas, Des Moines.

Darlene Vetter McGee, 96, formerly of Rock Island, passed away Friday, April 17th, at Iowa Masonic Home, Bettendorf. Services will be 1:00 p.m. Monday at Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home, 3030 7th Ave., Rock Island. Burial will be at Memorial Park cemetery, Rock Island. Visitation will be 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Assoc., Avonlea Cottages, or Iowa Masonic Health Facilities. The former Darlene Fausett was born Dec. 29, 1912 in Joy, IL to Charles and Dora B. Springer Fausett. She married Floyd L. Vetter of Buffalo Prairie, IL. in 1931. He died 1954. She married Minor E. (Mac) McGee of Rock Island in 1955. He died 1975. Darlene and Floyd lived in the Illinois City and Buffalo Prairie areas, moving to Milan in 1950. After Darlene’s marriage to Mac, she moved to Rock Island. Mrs. McGee was employed at the former Villa De Chantal of Rock Island, for many years. She attended the First Evangelical Free Church of Moline. Her daughters are Barbara Jo Ann Dillingham, Rock Island, Karen Paul (John), Varna, IL, and son-in law Lee Dillingham Sr., Scottsdale, AZ. There are five grandchildren; Debra Johnston (Gordon), Coal Valley, Lee Dillingham Jr., Scottsdale, AZ, John Paul Jr. (Danielle), Aurora, IL, Chad Paul, Varna, IL, and Dr. Robb Paul, Indianapolis, IN. There are six great-grandchildren; Ryan (Sarah) and Kyle Johnston, Kathryn, Nathan, Christopher and Colin Paul. A sister, Katherine (Vern) Sellman, Osco and a special family friend, John Each Sr., Rock Island. Mrs. Mc Gee was preceded in death by both husbands, infant son Floyd Louis Jr., parents, and sisters; Mildred Anders, Verna DeRoo, Mattie LaFever, Lois Thompson, and brothers; Cody, Harold, Lloyd, and James Fausett. Darlene’s daughters would like to thank the staff at Avonlea Cottages, Milan, and the Iowa Masonic Home, Bettendorf, for the care and love she received the past 5 years.

Julia M. “Judy” Heires, 93, of Moline, passed away Wednesday, April 15, 2009 at Heartland Health Care Center, Moline. A Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 a.m. Monday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Rock Island. Burial is in the National cemetery, Arsenal Island. Visitation is 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home, 3030 7th Ave., Rock Island, where a rosary will be recited at 2:00 p.m. Memorials may be made to St. Mary’s Catholic Church or to a favorite charity. Judy Mooney was born on April 19, 1915 in Elgin, Nebraska, a daughter of George and Josephine Hoefer Mooney. She married Carl F. Heires on January 12, 1944 in Arkansas City, Kansas. She had worked as a beautician in Wayne, Nebraska for a number of years, but was happiest being a loving homemaker for her family. Judy was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Rock Island, and its Altar Society. She was also a member of the Our Lady of Perpetual Help Circle 532 Daughters of Isabella and the Moline American Legion Post 246 Auxiliary. Judy enjoyed playing cards, gardening and decorating. Survivors include her husband, Carl; sons and daughters-in-law, Robert and Tanya Heires, Tampa, Florida, Lawrence and Gay Heires, Puyallup, Wash., Vernon and Theresa Heires, Howell, Mich., Gregory and Kris Heires, Moline and Leon and Renee Heires, Sterling, Ill.; eight grandchildren; and five great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Jack, Harvey, William and George; and sisters, Loretta, Mabel, Dorothy, Amelia and Viola.
Interment: Monday April 20, 2009 at National cemetery, Rock Island, Ill.

Earl J. Christensen

Earl J. Christensen, 59, of Rock Island, died Tuesday, April 14, 2009 at Trinity Medical Center, West Campus, Rock Island. At his request there are no services. He was born on June 11, 1949 in Davenport, a son of Irvin and Ida Bremser Christensen. Earl received his Associates degree from Black Hawk College and Bachelors degree from Marycrest. He did a practicum at the Robert Young Mental Health Center, Rock Island and was trained as a counselor. Survivors include his mother, Ida, Rock Island; brother and sister-in-law, Norman and Erma Christensen, Logan, Ohio; and a niece. He was preceded in death by his father.

Donald L. Guthrie
November 15, 1933 - June 28, 2007

Donald Guthrie Donald L. Guthrie, 73, of Andalusia, died Thursday, June 28, 2007, at Trinity Medical Center, West Campus, Rock Island. Services will be 10 a.m. Monday at Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home, Milan. Visitation will be from 2-6 p.m. on Sunday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Andalusia cemetery. A memorial fund has been established. Donald was born on Nov. 15, 1933, in Unionville, Mo., the son of Reed and Bertha Husted Guthrie. He married Phoebe A. Finley on March 8, 1952, in Rock Island. She died April 4, 1992. Don later married Bonnie Smock on Oct. 17, 1992, in Illinois City. Don worked at International Harvester Works, East Moline, for 39 years, retiring as a leadman. Mr. Guthrie was a member of UAW Local 1304, East Moline. His hobbies included hunting and working on antique tractors. Don could fix anything mechanical, and was also a mule skinner. Mr. Guthrie had served as the Andalusia Township Road Commissioner for 15 years. Don was also the owner/operator of his own excavating service. Survivors include his wife, Bonnie; sons and spouses, Donald E. and Gail Guthrie, Joy, Jack and Sue Guthrie, Andalusia; grandchildren, Tom, Jason, Jenny, Jamie Guthrie and Stacey Miller; great-grandchildren, Shannon, Logan, Cameron, Taylor, Clay, Emily and Justin; brothers and sisters, Junior Guthrie, Corydon, Iowa, Johnita Dresser, Corydon, Louise Long, Fairfield, Iowa, Lila Stout, Council Bluffs, Iowa, and Joyce Sweeney, Gray, Tenn. Don was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Phoebe; a sister, Verla Henderson; a brother, Allen Guthrie; and his stepmother, Alice Guthrie.

Margaret F. “Peggy “ Barker, 83, of Rock Island, died Saturday, June 30, 2007 at the Palos Community Hospital, Palos Heights, IL. Funeral services will be 10 am, Thursday at the First Baptist Church, Rock Island, where an additional visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church. Visitation will be 4-7 pm, Wednesday at the Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home, 3030-7th Ave., Rock Island. Burial will be in the Rock Island Memorial Park cemetery. A memorial fund has been established. Margaret was born September 10, 1923 in Lockland, Ohio, the daughter of John W. and Lena Lyons Henderson. She married Elmer T. Barker on March 8, 1947 in Louisville, Kentucky. Mr. Barker preceded his wife in death on December 21, 1990. Margaret was a homemaker. Mrs. Barker‘s memberships include the First Baptist Church, American Baptist Women, Xtra Years of Zest, an organization of the church, Kings Daughters and the Davenport Moose Lodge. She loved square dancing, traveling in her R.V., listening to country music, babies, puppies, sewing and crafts. Survivors include a daughter, Barbara Shaw, Orland Park, IL; grand daughters, Carol Barker, Rock Island, Allison Egger, Mabelton, Georgia, Heidi Dutton, Milan; great grandsons, Cody, Aaron and Owen; a daughter in law, Ann Barker Balentine, Davenport. Mrs. Barker was preceded in death by her parents, husband, a son, M. Thomas Barker, and a son in law, Craig Shaw. She was the youngest of nine brother and sisters, who also preceded her in death.

Harold A. Nelson

Memorials may be directed to Immanuel Lutheran Church or Country House Residences, Davenport. Harold was born March 21, 1931 in Rock Island, the son of Arval and Myrtle Parr Nelson. He married Kathy Benson, May 27, 1995 in Rock Island. He was partner/owner with his parents in Nelson Auto Parts Company, Inc., Rock Island for many years before retiring in 1996 due to health reasons. He graduated from Augustana College and received his Masters of Art Degree from the University of Nebraska in 1954. Harold was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Rock Island. He loved spending time with his family and friends along with his dog Odie. He enjoyed music, dancing and walking. Harold is survived by his wife, Kathy, Rock Island; sisters and their husbands, Barbara and John Shirkey, Wenona, IL, Mary Lou and Joe Tolson, Milan; son and his wife, Mark and Lisa Nelson, Tulsa, OK; step-sons, Randy Stout, Eldridge, IA, Ron Stout and his wife, Janel, Davenport; step-grandchildren, Amanda, Dalton and Sydney Stout, along with numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded by his parents.
Interment: July 06, 2007 at Memorial Park Mausoleum, Rock Island, Illinois

Memorials may be made to St. Matthew Lutheran Church, Milan. Mrs. Bennett was born June 16, 1925 in Moline, the daughter of Edwin and Louise Posten Stoneburner. She married Raymond Bennett, October 20, 1946 in East Moline. Mabel graduated from Moline High School in 1943. She then attended Moline Public Hospital School of Nursing, graduating in 1946. For all her adult life she was a registered nurse working for the former Moline Public Hospital, Comfort Harbor Nursing Home in Milan, John Deere Harvester Works, East Moline and Robert Young Center, Rock Island before retiring in 1987. She and her husband Ray were chartered members of St. Matthew Lutheran Church, Milan, where she was very active for many years. She was a member of Fort Armstrong Camping Club, National Campers and Hikers, Holiday Ramblers Club and Retirees Club. She was a member of the National Barber Shop Chorus and sang in the church choir. She loved to bowl and bowled on two different leagues and also enjoyed knitting and crocheting. She is survived by her husband, Ray; sons and spouses, Larry and Carol Bennett, Rock Island, Rick and Paula Bennett, Placentia, CA, Jim Bennett and Tinker, Milan, Randy and Kelly Bennett, Cedar Rapids, IA; grandchildren, Kristin, Robin, Rachel, Kyle, Stephanie and Sarah; great grandchildren, Davon and Brenden; brothers and spouses, Bill and Jane Stoneburner, Racine, WI, Larry and Nancy Stoneburner, Galena, IL; sister and her spouse, Kathy and Bruce Huston, Kalamazoo, MI along with many nieces and nephews. She was preceded by her parents.
Interment: July 07, 2007 at Greenview Memorial Gardens, East Moline, IL
