J. Harold Chappell
OAKLAND CITY — J. Harold Chappell, 102, died Thursday, April 27, 2000, at Gibson General Hospital.
He owned and operated Chappell’s Jewelry Store in Oakland City.
He was a World War I Army veteran and was a charter and life member and first adjutant of the Oakland City Johnson Curd American Legion Post 296.
He was a member and elder of Oakland City First Presbyterian Church.
He was a founding member of the Boy Scouts of America under Sir Baden-Powell in 1910 and founding and oldest member of the Oakland City Country Club and Ellis Park Turf Club.
He was Sagamore of the Wabash and a Kentucky Colonel.
Surviving are a daughter, Patricia Hilligoss of Oakland City; three grandchildren, Janet Burt, Tom Chappell and Brian Hilligoss; and three great-grandchildren.
His wife, Emily (Russell), died in 1984, and a son, Dr. Harold R., died in 1989.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Corn-Colvin Funeral Home, with burial in Montgomery cemetery, with military rites.
Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contribution may be made to the Visiting Nurse Association.
Robert Raibley
BOONVILLE — Robert L. “Bob” Raibley, 79, died Wednesday, April 26, 2000, at McCurdy Healthcare Center in Evansville from complications of a stroke.
He operated Owens Grocery Store in Boonville for 15 years and managed Warrick County Credit Bureau in Mount Vernon, Ind., and Carmi, Ill., for 10 years. From 1969 to 1986, he owned and operated Hall & Taylor Furniture Store in Boonville.
He was a World War II Marine Corps veteran and member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3418 and American Legion Post 200.
He was a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Evansville, Elks Lodge 1180, and a life member of the Boonville Optimist and Optimist International.
Surviving are a daughter, Lisa Ann Poole of Indianapolis; six sons, R. Joseph of Maryville, Tenn., Stephen O. and Edward H., both of Boonville, Keith M. of Chesterfield, Mo., David T. of Mount Vernon and John Payton Raibley of Evansville; a sister, Betty Bickley of Fort Wayne; two brothers, Dr. Parvin of Evansville and Dr. Jerry of Mount Vernon; 10 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Evansville, with entombment in Oak Hill Mausoleum in Evansville.
Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Bradley Colonial Chapel in Boonville and from 9 a.m. to service time at the church.

Clarence Hatfield
VINCENNES — Clarence H. Hatfield, 88, died Wednesday, April 26 2000, at Good Samaritan Hospital.
He had been a machine operator for the Knox County highway department.
Surviving are his wife, Dora (Kean); two daughters, Sharon Thompson of Bloomington and Patsy Stivers of Vincennes; two sons, Harlan Hatfield Groves of Masonville, Ky., and Teddy Hatfield of Vincennes; 11 grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
Graveside services will be at 1:30 p.m. today in Memorial Park cemetery.

Christine Phillips
WASHINGTON — Christine Rosalie Phillips, 75, died Wednesday, April 26, 2000, at Daviess Community Hospital emergency room.
She had been a waitress at Hillie’s Restaurant and a food supervisor at Hill Side Manor Nursing Home.
She was a member of Central Christian Church, past matron of Glendale Eastern Star, past royal matron amaranth of Eastern Star 26 in Vincennes and Daughters of the Nile and White Shrine in Evansville.
Surviving are two daughters, Barbara Helm and Ann Shelton, both of Washington; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Gill Funeral Home, with burial in Bethel cemetery.
Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 6 p.m., and from 9 a.m. to service time at the funeral home.
Walter White
WASHINGTON — Walter Prentice White, 90, died Monday, April, 17, 2000, at Barstow Community Hospital in California.
He was the manager of the Fluor Corp., an oil well equipment company, and had been a movie agent.
He was a 1929 graduate of Washington High School and had a business degree.
He was a member of the First Methodist Church in Pasadena, Calif.
Surviving is a brother, Riley B. of San Diego.
His wife, Frances Irene (Reeve), died in 1987.
Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. today in Sugarland Memory Gardens.

Russell Lucas
PETERSBURG — Russell B. Lucas, 96, died Thursday, April 27, 2000, at Deaconess Hospital in Evansville.
He was a farmer and a coal miner and the recipient of a 75-year Coal Miner Award.
He was a member of Arnold Church.
Surviving are his wife, Bettye (Cummings); a daughter, Catherine Smith Sandy of Petersburg; a son, Freddy of Petersburg; a brother, the Rev. Roy of Lawrenceville; five grandchildren; a stepgrandchild; 10 great-grandchildren; and a stepgreat-grandchild.
His first wife, Zona, died in 1957.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Harris Funeral Home, with burial in Walnut Hills cemetery.

Marjory Warren
ROBINSON — Marjory Biggs Warren, 91, died Thursday, April 27, 2000, at Crawford Memorial Hospital Long Term Care.
She was a private duty nurse.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church.
Surviving are a son, Robert Alexander of Tulsa, Okla.; a sister, Dorothy Richey of Palestine; three grandchildren, Robin Anne Nugent, Margot Susanne Jacoby and Mark Christopher Warren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Her husband, Robert A., died in 1997.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Goodwine Funeral Home, with burial in Palestine cemetery.
Friends may call from noon to service time at the funeral home.

Virginia Bentley
HARRISBURG — Virginia Garnett Bently, 87, died Monday, April 24, 2000, at the home a daughter in Elgin.
She was a member of Miles Chapel C.M.E. Church and a life-long member of Bethel A.M.E. Church, both in Harrisburg.
Surviving are five daughters, Phyllis Rollins, Carolyn Green, Johnnye Harrell and Paula Bentley, all of Elgin, and Jeri Stewart of Cleveland, Ohio; a son, Michael Walker of Harrisburg; a sister, Evelyn Chavis of Harrisburg; a brother, Kenneth “Cleatus” Garnett of Harrisburg; 24 grandchildren; 45 great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
Her husband, Johnnie, and a son, Dickie, preceded her in death.
Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. today at Sunset Hill cemetery. Reed Funeral Chapel is handling arrangements.
Ellis Cochran
LAWRENCEVILLE — Ellis R. Cochran, 91, died Thursday, April 27, 2000, at Lawrenceville Manor.
He had been a laborer for the New York Central Railroad and had worked for the Kelly Saw Mill.
He was a member of the Wesleyan church.
Surviving are his wife, Roxie (McKeighen); six daughters, Roxie Wright of Champaign, Ruby Jean Waller and Teresa Sue Cunningham, both of Lawrenceville, Caroline Rose Crum of Mount Vernon, Ind., Ruth Douglas of Blairsville, Ind., and Ethel Alberta Hensley of Loves Park; four sons, Earl Robert and Elvin “Kenny, ” both of Lawrenceville, Gary Lee of Auroria, Ind., and Ronnie D. of Sumner; 32 grandchildren; and 45 great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Emmons-Macey & Steffey Funeral Home, with burial in Lawrenceville City cemetery.
