Hazel Thomas

CARMI — Hazel M. Thomas, 72, died Thursday, April 27, 2000, at her home. Determination of the cause of death is pending White County coroner’s autopsy results.

She had worked at Ainsbrook for 28 years, was a nurse’s aide at the Whited County Nursing Home for eight years and for more than 15 years worked at the Wabash Christian Retirement Center.

Surviving are a son, Marty Dale Thomas of Carmi; two sisters, Ruby McClurken and Lillian “Peewee” Greer, both of Carmi; a brother, William E. Greer of Chicago; and three grandchildren, Matthew Scott and Brittany Jill Edmonds and Brandi Elizabeth Thomas.

A son, William Andrew, preceded her in death.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Kittinger-Fair Funeral Home, with burial in Kingdom cemetery.

Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Benjamin Mendenhall Jr.

ROBINSON — Benjamin Edmond Mendenhall Jr., 73, died Thursday, April 27, 2000, at Crawford Memorial Hospital from a heart attack.

He co-owned and operated the Town N Country True Value Hardware Store from 1977 until it burned down in 1980. He was the Robinson Township trustee from 1980 to 1983 and then township supervisor until he retired in 1997.

He had been a farmer and had worked at the Farmer’s Exchange.

He was a member of the Plymouth Christian Church.

Surviving are his wife, Thelma Lucille (Emmons); two daughters, Shirley A. Berry and Donna C. Dunlap, both of Robinson; a son, D. Kevin of Robinson; three sisters, Edna Scott of Oblong, Ruby M. Bex of Terre Haute, Ind., and Bessie F. Hale of Robinson; two brothers, Earnie M. of Oblong and Smith K. “Buster” of Mount Sterling; four grandchildren; Jill L. Dunahee, Beth A. Stoltz, Jason Berry and Jedidiah D. Dunlap; and six great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by an infant son, Roger Duane.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Plymouth Christian Church, with burial in Robinson New cemetery.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday and from 8 a.m. to noon Sunday at Goodwine Funeral Home, and from 1 p.m. to service time at the church.

Memorial contributions may be made to Robinson Lions Club.

Peggy Devore

MOUNT CARMEL — Peggy A. (Miller) Devore, 55, died Wednesday, April 26, 2000, at Wabash General Hospital of a heart attack.

She was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Ladies Auxiliary and the Eagles.

Surviving are two daughters, Theresa Strockbine and Vicky Brand, both of Mount Carmel; a sister, Mary Etta Deisher of Mount Carmel; a brother, Melvin “Butch” Miller of Keensburg; two grandchildren, Tosha York and Eric Risley Jr.; and a stepgranddaughter, Rachel Strockbine.

Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday in Highland Memorial cemetery.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Short Funeral Home with cremation to follow.

Freda Earheart

NORRIS CITY — Freda Earheart, 87, died Thursday, April 27, 2000, at Union Hospital in Frankfort, Ill.

She had worked at Wilmar Restorium in Carmi in housekeeping.

Surviving are two daughters, Emma Grace Edmonds of Nashville, Ill., and Mary Alice Vanzant of West Frankfort; two sons, Lawrence Leroy of Portage, Ind., and Ivan Dale of Davenport, Iowa; 12 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.

Her husband, Lawrence Harlis, died in 1994.

Arrangements are pending at Campbell Funeral Home.

Evelyn Austin-Reeder

ROBINSON, Ill. — Evelyn Austin-Reeder, 70, died Tuesday, March 28, 2000, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Vincennes, Ind., of pulmonary fibrosis.

She retired from Robinson High School where she was an art teacher.

She was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Robinson, where she was an elder and former session member, Crawford County Retired Teachers, PEO Chapter LX, Delta Kappa Gamma and Kappa Kappa sororities, the Book Discussion Group, past president of AAUW and a volunteer for Robinson Food Pantry.

She received her bachelor’s degree from Indiana State University in 1951.

She enjoyed bridge, the arts and traveling.

Surviving are her husband, Jack R. Reeder; a daughter, Lynn Koester of Robinson; two stepsons, Sam and Tom Reeder, both of Washington; two sisters, Patricia “Patty” Winkler of Boca Raton, Fla., and Rebecca “Becky” Walter of White Pigeon, Mich.; three grandchildren, Stephanie, Michael and Lucas Koester; four stepgrandchildren, Ashley, Megan, Mike and Ben Reeder; and a niece and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Charles E. Austin, in 1985.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Pulliam Funeral Home Robinson Chapel, with burial in Robinson New cemetery.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday and from 8 a.m. to service time at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to First Presbyterian Church in Robinson, the American Lung Association or to the American Cancer Society.

Nadia Crow

CAVE IN ROCK, Ill. — Nadia M. Crow, 85, died Tuesday, March 28, 2000, at Rosiclare Healthcare Center in Rosiclare.

Surviving are a daughter, Pamela Gillin of Golconda; a sister, Hazel Kaegi of Elizabethtown; and two grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ira.

Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. today in Cave Hill cemetery.

There will be no visitation at Hosick Funeral Home Rosiclare Chapel.

Gladys Oxford

CAVE IN ROCK, Ill. — Gladys Geraldine Oxford, 81, died Saturday, April 15, 2000, at Rosiclare Health Care Center.

She was a member of Keeling Hill Baptist Church.

Surviving are a daughter, Brenda Wiseman of Metropolis; three sons, John of Romeoville, Roger of Cave In Rock and Gary of Robinson; a half sister, Barbara Smith; a half brother, Joe Smith; 11 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Bernard, and a daughter, Geraldine Yackle.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Rose-Gilbert Funeral Home, with burial in Hall cemetery.

Friends may call from 9 a.m. to service time at the funeral home.

Louise McNab

HARRISBURG, Ill. — Louise McNab, 92, died Saturday, April 15, 2000, at Harrisburg Medical Center.

She was a social worker for the Illinois Department of Public Aid.

She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and Daughters of the American Revolution.

Surviving are a stepson, George McNab of Warren, Mich.; and nephews.

Her husband, George, died in 1980.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Reed Funeral Chapel, with burial in Sunset Lawn cemetery.

Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral chapel.

Donald Seed

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ind. — Donald A. Seed, 72, died Saturday, April 15, 2000, at his home.

He was a farmer and had worked for Texaco Refinery for 35 years.

He was a Korean War veteran and member of the Experimental Aricraft Association, Wabash Valley Bee Keepers Associaition and the American Legion.

Surviving are his wife, Billie; and a niece and nephew whom he raised, Leanis Peters and Larry Seed.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Emmons-Macey & Steffey Funeral Home, with burial in Lawrencville City cemetery.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

William Heck

DAHLGREN, Ill. — William J. Heck, 82, died Wednesday, April 19, 2000, at his home.

He was a retired farmer.

He was a member of St. John Catholic Church and a World War II Army veteran.

Surviving are three daughters, Mary Frey and Margaret Langley, both of McLeansboro, and Elizabeth “Betty” Anselment of Dahlgren; a son, Robert of Dahlgren; a sister, Christine Blum of Downers Grove; a brother, Sylvester of Downers Grove; eight grandchildren, Sara Heck, Greg, Doug and Christina Anselment, Janet, Steven and Joseph Simpson and Jacob Langley; and a stepgrandchild, Greg Rowe.

His wife, Wilma Bernice (Spruell), died in 1994.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at St. John Catholic Church, with burial in St. John cemetery, with military rites.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Gholson Funeral Home Dahlgren Chapel.
