G. Eugene Allen

GRAYVILLE — G. Eugene Allen, 49, died Thursday, July 5, 2001, at his home of complications of diabetes.

He had been a restaurant cook and was a member of the Free Methodist Church in Albion.

Surviving are his mother, Josie M. (Corzine) Allen of Grayville; a sister, Tammy Davis of Grayville; and two brothers, Danny of Grayville and David of Browns.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the Free Methodist Church in Albion, with burial in Mount Zion cemetery.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Sturm Funeral Home Grayville Chapel.

Mabel Smythe

ENFIELD — Mabel Clair (Wall) Smythe, 88, died Thursday, July 5, 2001, at her home.

She had worked at Sears Roebuck and Co. and for Servel Inc. in Evansville during World War II.

She was a member of Enfield First Christian Church.

Surviving are a daughter, Susan Rhoades of Newburgh; a stepdaughter, Mary Jeanette Smythe of Columbia, Mo.; a son, Michael of Enfield; and six grandchildren, Taryn Clair Fleming-Johns, Kristin Michelle Smythe, Tracee Nicole Flemming, Lauren Janae and Brandon Foster Smythe and Kody James Steed.

Her husband, Foster L., died in 1988.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Elledge Funeral Home, with burial in Enfield cemetery.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Raymond Fleckenstein

DAHLGREN - Raymond W. Fleckenstein, 78, died Tuesday, July 3, 2001, at his home of liver cancer.

He retired in 1983 as plant manager of the Getty Oil Co. and had worked for the Skelly Oil Co.

He was a World War II Army veteran, a member and a special Eucharistic minister at St. John Catholic Church and a member of Knights of Columbus.

Surviving are his wife, Oatie (Dollins); a niece and nephews.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. John Catholic Church, with burial in Odd Fellows cemetery with military rites.

Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Gholson Funeral Home, with a prayer service at 6 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Phyllis Smith

ROBINSON - Phyllis I. (Jannes) Smith, 70, died Tuesday, July 3, 2001, at Lawrenceville Manor of complication from a broken hip.

She had been a cashier at the National Food Store.

Surviving are two daughters, Vicki Smith of Antioch and Debbie Dedrick of Palestine; a son, Chet Smith of St. Charles, Mo.; two sisters, Gladys Simbach of Phoenix and Avis Wheat of Rolling Meadows; three grandchildren, Michelle Langley, Greg Dedrick Jr. and Jeff Smith; three great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews. Her husband, Chester H. Jr., died in 1990.

Services will be at 3 p.m. today at Pulliam Funeral Home, the body will be cremated. Friends may call from 2 p.m. to service time.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Lung Association.

Mildred Fortner

ALBION - Mildred Fortner, 86, of Newburgh died Monday, July 2, 2001, at Woodlands Convalescent Center in Newburgh.

Surviving are her husband, Lyman of Newburgh; a daughter, Janice Jones of Newburgh; a sister, Genevieve Moats of Fairfield; two grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday in Bethel cemetery. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Nale's Funeral Home.

Helen Rice

ELDORADO - Helen M. Rice, 78, died Tuesday, July 3, 2001, at Ferrell Hospital of cancer.

She was a Girl Scout leader for 13 years and was a member of the Free Methodist Church and Eastern Star.

Surviving are five sons, Eddie, Rick and Darrell, all of Eldorado, Gary of Centralia and Terry of Harrisburg; a daughter, Brenda Rice of Evansville; her twin sister, Ellen Ingersoll of Wood River; a brother, William Ewell of Eldorado; 11 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. Her husband, Willard, died in 1980, and a son, Ronald, died in 1995.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Watson Funeral Home, with burial in Wolf Creek cemetery.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Lessie Scott

ROSICLARE - Lessie Scott, 91, died Tuesday, July 3, 2001, at Rosiclare Health Care of cardiac arrest.

Surviving are a half brother, James Beavers of Dearborn, Mich.; and nieces and nephews.

A daughter, Hanna Price, preceded her in death.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Hosick Funeral Home, with burial in Mount Zion cemetery.

Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Jerold Wilcox

SUMNER - Jerold G. Wilcox, 38, died Monday, July 2, 2001, at Lawrence County Memorial Hospital.

He was a disabled Navy veteran and a member of the Chauncey United Methodist Church.

Surviving are a daughter, Tawnya Wilcox of Sumner; a son, Jerold G. of Sumner; his mother, Billie Jean Lancaster of Florida; three sisters, Candace Ralston of Flat Rock, Emily Ray of Grayville and Mary Michelle Wilcox of Bridgeport; four brothers, Larry and John D., both of Bridgeport, Jay W. of Raleigh, N.C., and Travis A. of New Hebron; and his grandmother, Carol Sumner of Sumner.

Graveside services 2 p.m. today in Waggoner cemetery.

Donald Hesher

LAWRENCEVILLE — Donald L. Hesher, 69, died Monday, July 2, 2001, at Good Samaritan Hospital. The cause of death has not yet been determined.

He retired in 1997 as the maintenance supervisor at Vincennes University, was the production foreman at McBride Oil Co., owned Hesher Sporting Goods Store for 11 years, part-owner of H&H; Hallmark and had owned the Scoop Restaurant and in Vincennes, Ind., Lovin Stuff.

He was a member of St. Lawrence Catholic Church, Elks, Rod & Gun Club and Knights of Columbus.

Surviving are his wife, Betty (Ruppel); a daughter, Pam Preston of rural Lawrenceville; a son, David of rural Law-renceville; three sisters, Leona Kaiser and Marlene Dale, both of Vincennes and Carolyn Holden of Vero Beach, Fla.; and four grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Emmons-Macey & Steffey Funeral Home, with burial in Lawrencville cemetery.

Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to Relay for Life.

Ruth Skidmore

ROBINSON — Ruth L. (Ramsey) Skidmore, 92, died Sunday, July 1, 2001, at Cotillion Ridge Nursing Center.

She attended the New Hebron Baptist Church.

Surviving are three sons, Dick Staten of Incline Village, Nev., Jack Staten of Los Angeles, Calif., and David Skidmore of Robinson; a stepdaughter, Gay Brimberry of Palestine; eight grandchildren; 13 stepgrandchildren; great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by two husbands, William E. Staten, in 1941 and Bill Skidmore, in 1976, a stepdaughter, Glee Conover; a son, Danny Kent Skidmore and two stepsons, Billy Don and James R. Skidmore.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Goodwin Funeral Home, with burial in Palestine cemetery.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday and from 8 a.m. to service time at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to New Hebron Baptist Youth Memorial Fund.

Mary Abbott

LAWRENCEVILLE — Mary E. (Hunt) Abbott, 87, died Monday, July 2, 2001, at Lawrenceville Manor.

She was a member of the First Christian Church and Veterans of Foreign Wars Ladies Auxiliary.

Surviving are two sisters, Jacqueline Forney of Lawrenceville and Opal Rogers of Bridgeport; and a brother, Gilbert Hunt of Lawrenceville. Her husband, Oliver C., died in 1992.

Graveside services 11 a.m. Thursday in Lawrenceville cemetery.

Friends may call from 10 a.m. to service time at Emmons-Macey & Steffey Funeral Home.

Sharon Perry

MOUNT CARMEL — Sharon Lynn (Reno) Perry, 42, died Tuesday, July 3, 2001, at her home of liver failure.

She was a member of Eagles.

Surviving are her husband, Richard H. II; a son, Richard H. III of Mount Carmel; her father and stepmother, James L. and Mary Ann Reno; four sisters, Debra Ann Lyden, Christina Renee Garrett, Kathy Marie Crackel and Sherry Ann Stout, all of Mount Carmel; three brothers, James Daniel and David Lee Reno, both of Odessa, Texas, and Stanley Eugene Reno of Robinson; her grandmother, Cora Case of Mount Carmel; a grandson, Caleb Richard Perry; and nieces and nephews.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Short Funeral Home, with burial in Highland Memorial cemetery.

Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
