John was baptized at Zion Lutheran Church. He was a graduate of Springbrook Elementary School, where all eight grades were taught by Reba Steck, and a 1930 graduate of Washington High School, now Washington Junior High School. Later he attended North Central College for two years during the Depression.
Continuing in the tradition of his father and grandfather, John farmed the family homestead, now a part of the Springbrook Prairie Forest Preserve.
Later he started his own business, John Leverenz Trenching, created to help recapture flood plains and marshes for farming. His company laid miles of drainage tile for neighboring farms in DuPage and Will Counties that allowed farmers to extendtheir tillable land.
Among his special interests, John enjoyed Pompano Beach, Fla., and in the 1930s purchased land which he gradually cleared in order to build a cottage. In love with the exotic area, he spent a great deal of time during his winter excursions there, exploring the land and gathering many of the fascinating creatures and artifacts he found. Truly a collector at heart, John also enjoyed interesting things of all sorts, so much so that he had trouble finding room for all the `treasures' he acquired. Many of these items have been donated to organizations dear to his heart, including the Wheatland Plowing Match, where John's two-bottom horse-drawn plow and a wooden cornchopper will eventually be on display at its new site. Some of John's farm tools are shown as part of the sculpture in downtown Naperville on Jefferson Avenue, others at the Thomas Clow Farmstead on the Riverview Farm Preserve, and his Budda power plant, once used to power an entire quarry operation, is currently on display at the Northern Illinois Steam Power Club in Hampshire.
Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Jean Leverenz (nee Anderson), whom he married in 1945; daughters, Sallie (Bruce) Lund of Chicago and Jody Jon (Kirby) Strohm of Plainfield; grandchildren, Jonathan and Jacquelin Lund, and Jesse John Strohm; and brother, Grant Leverenz.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Mary Leverenz; daughter, Lorna Jean Leverenz; son, John Martin Leverenz III; and sisters, Lillian Schoger, Edna Kaiser, and Laura and Esther Leverenz.
Visitation will be from 10:30 a.m. until the time of services at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, at the funeral home.
Memorials may be made to Alleluia
