Alvena Morris

PALESTINE — Alvena Maxine Reynolds Morris, 85, died Wednesday, March 21, 2001, at the Cotillion Ridge Nursing Center.

She was a buyer and clerk in retail stores in Indianapolis.

She was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Ladies Auxiliary and Eastern Star, both in Indianapolis.

Surviving are stepdaughter, Shawn Kristen Reynolds of Schereville, Ind.; a stepson, Wyatt Reynolds of rural Palestine; a sister, Doris Jean Lindstrom of Kensington, Md.; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by two husbands, Wyatt L. Reynolds in 1951 and Harry Dillman Morris in 1967.

Graveside services will be at at 10 a.m. Saturday in Palestine cemetery. There will be no visitation at Goodwine Funeral Home.

Ruby Price

RALEIGH — Ruby Price, 94, died Sunday, March 4, 2001, at Ferrell Hospital in Eldorado.

She was a school nurse for 20 years and owned the Eldorado Nursing Home from 1954 to 1990. She was a member of First United Methodist Church.

Surviving are a daughter, Margaret Baker of Raleigh; a sister, Gretchen Ruckert of Atlanta; four grandchildren, David, Tom and John Baker and Gretchen Ruckert; five great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by two husbands, Evan Swain Benedict in 1936, and Lee David Price in 1954.

Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Wolf Creek cemetery. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Watson Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made to the church.

Wilburn Cummins Jr.

CARMI — Wilburn L. “Squibb” Cummins Jr., 77, died of heart failure Sunday, March 4, 2001, at Deaconess Hospital in Evansville.

He was an oil field driller and worked for DI-KOR Service Co. He was a World War II Army veteran, serving in England and Germany. He was a member of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Surviving are two sons, Richard and Roger, both of Carmi; three sisters, Ida Graddy and Shirley Louellen, both of Carmi, and Carrie Sullivan of Penrod, Ky.; a half sister, Joyce Mainor of Satsuma, Fla.; a brother, Richard “Dick” of Colborn, Colo.; five grandchildren, Kenny, Mandy and Tyson Cummins and Blythe and Dough Nelson; three stepgrandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and five stepgreat-grandchildren. His wife, Ella Fern (Puntney) died in 2000.

Memorial services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Campbell Funeral Home. There will be no visitation.

Marie Fritchie

LAWRENCEVILLE — Marie D. Angle Fritchie, 89, died Monday, March 5, 2001, at United Methodist Village.

Surviving is her husband, Nolan; a daughter, Donna Kay Marbry of Melborn, Fla.; a son David Allen of Bartow, Fla.; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Emmons-Macey & Steffey Funeral Home, with burial in Pleasant Hill cemetery. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Asa Mitchell

HARRISBURG — Asa N. Mitchell, 74, died of an apparent heart attack Saturday, March 3, 2001, at Fountain View Nursing Home in Eldorado.

He was a factory worker and an elevator operator.

He was a member of McKinley Avenue Baptist Church.

Surviving are his wife, Edna L. “Sally” (Aluzas); a daughter, Janice Kelly of Harrisburg; a brother, Ross of Eldorado; two grandsons, Jason Kelly and Andrew Mitchell; and a great-grandson.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Gaskins Funeral Home, with burial in Sunset Gardens cemetery.

Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

John Neighbors Sr.

HARRISBURG — John Neighbors Sr., 65, died of an apparent heart attack Saturday, March 3, 2001, at his home.

He was a construction laborer and attended the Land Street Church of God.

Surviving are his wife, Barbara (Poole); four daughters, Patty Pickering, Sharon Bishop, Terri Fox and Misty Neighbors, all of Harrisburg; a son, Johnny Jr. of South Dakota; two sisters, Mary Carter of Eldorado and Linda May of Fort Dodge, Iowa; a brother, Bill of Galatia; and eight grandchildren, Kendra Fox, Larry Harris, Reagan Nelson, Barbara and John David Bishop, Joe Worley, Donetta Mosselli and Johnny Neighbors III.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Gaskins Funeral Home, with burial in Sunset Gardens cemetery.

Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Blanch Hamson

DAHLGREN — Blanch Fern (Ward) Hamson, 86, died Saturday, March 3, 2001, at Countryside Manor in Mount Vernon.

She was a member of Dahlgren Baptist Church.

Surviving are a daughter, Violet Mehalek of Dahlgren; two sons, Silas E. of Belle Rive and Alan of Dahlgren; two sisters, Hattie Mae Davenport of Mount Vernon and Nola Hamson of Belle Rive; 10 grandchildren; stepgrandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews. Her husband, Silas Jonathon, died in 1999, and an infant son preceded her in death.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Harre Funeral Home, with burial in Odd Fellows cemetery.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Betty Cruse

CARMI — Betty Cruse, 69, died of heart failure Sunday, March 4, 2001, at St. Mary’s Medical Center in Evansville.

Surviving are her husband of 50 years, Raymond L.; a son, Don of Carmi; three grandchildren, Jon Cruse and Steven and Chrissy Smith; a great-grandchild; and a niece.

Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Kuykendall cemetery in Carmi. There will be no visitation at Campbell Funeral Home.

H. Maxine Blazier

NORRIS CITY — H. Maxine Blazier, 90, died Sunday, Jan. 7, 2001, at Fountainview Nursing Home in Eldorado.

She was a member of the United Cumberland Presbyterian Church.

Surviving are a a daughter, Alice Merritt of Norris City; a son, Ray of Luvettsville, Va.; seven grandchildren, Tony, Charmin, Kimberly and Alice Blazier, Gary and Tim Merritt and Vickie Wooten; four great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren. Her husband, Howard Adrean, died in 1957.

Arrangements are pending with Campbell Funeral Home.

Jerry Carey

HUTSONVILLE — Jerry D. Carey, 68, died of a heart condition Sunday, Jan. 7, 2001, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Vincennes, Ind.

He had been the principal and guidance counselor in the Berne (Ind.) school system, was superintendent of the Hutsonville school district and retired in 1989 after 19 years as dean of students at Lincoln Trail College.

He was president of the Eastern Illinois Community Colleges Retirement Group and had served 20 years as a group counselor for the American Counsel for International Studies for Europe, Australia and Russia.

He was a Korean War Army veteran and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Robinson.

He attended Fort Wayne Bible College and received degrees from Ball State University in education, administration and counseling.

He was a member of Hutsonville United Methodist Church, served 20 years on the Hutsonville town board and was a member of the Crawford County Economic Development Association.

Surviving are his wife, Mary Mae (Chrisman); two daughters, Merry Lynne Garrard of Katy, Texas, and Jerri Lou Titsworth of rural Robinson; his sister, Becky Herndon of Poplar Bluff, Mo.; and five grandchildren, Stefan, Eli, and Peter Gerrard, and Jonathan and Shelby Lynne Titsworth.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Hutsonville United Methodist Church, with burial in the Hutsonville cemetery.

Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Goodwine Funeral Home and from 9 a.m. to service time at the church.

Memorial contributions may be made to Lincoln Trail Foundation.

Lowell Bonnell

FLAT ROCK — Lowell David Bonnell, 77, died of cancer Saturday, Jan. 6, 2001, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Vincennes, Ind.

He retired in 1984 as a planning supervisor in the maintenance department after 40 years at Marathon Oil Co.

He was a member of Pearl Chapel United Methodist Church, Elks Lodge, Moose Lodge, Oak Glen Golf Course and a 50-year member of the Masons.

Surviving are his wife, Wanda (Siler); two sisters, Martha Dale of Phoenix and Cora Sharp of Michigan; three brothers, Glen of Oblong and Max and Larry, both of Robinson; and three grandsons, David Wayne, Timothy Ryan and Christopher Robert, all of rural Flat Rock.

He was preceded in death by two sons, David Lee in 1970 and Donald “Donnie” Wayne in 1997.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Goodwine Funeral Home in Robinson, with burial in Robinson New cemetery.

Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. today and from 8 a.m. to service time at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Robert Montgomery

ELDORADO — Robert Gill Montgomery, 90, died Saturday, Jan. 6, 2001, at his home.

He was a mining engineer and geologist, nationally recognized for his professional achievements. He had traveled to Russia, China, Africa and South America for his business and was a founder of Menerva Oil Co. in Eldorado.

He was a graduate of the University of Missouri.

He was a deacon and member of the Eldorado First Baptist Church.

He was active in the Shawnee Hills Chorus for more than 25 years and had been named Barber Shopper of the Year.

He was a 56-year member of the Lions Club and a traditional figure in its pronto pup stand during the Fall Festival.

Surviving are a daughter, Jill of Austin, Texas; a son, Jon of Austin; his sister, Nancy of Shawnee, Okla.; two grandchildren, Karina Montgomery of San Diego and Alicia Montgomery of St. Louis; and two nieces. His wife, Janet Mary (Steinmesch), died in 1996.

Memorial services are pending. Watson Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

Memorial contributions may be made by donating a hymnal in his name to your place of worship or a book to the Eldorado Public Library.
