Born Jan. 3, 1926, in Cincinnati, Ohio, to Daniel and Loretta Collins, he was born into eternal life Thursday, Feb. 11, 1999.
In 1974, Dan was ordained a deacon in the archdiocese of Chicago. He served as a deacon at Our Lady of Ransom Parish in Niles. A man with manytalents, `Deacon Dan,' as he was known, dedicated his life to helping others. No stranger to pain, suffering and misfortune himself, Dan cleaned up his life more than 30 years ago and had since dedicated his life to helping the less fortunate; alcoholics, drug addicts and convicts were among his students. He worked days, nights and weekends telling his own story, warning others of the pitfalls accompanying addiction, and bringing hope for a better way of life. In addition to working with those suffering from addictions, Dan also volunteered his services helping the mentally challenged.
A recovering alcoholic and a member of Alcoholics Anonymous, Deacon Dan worked a 24-hour program of living and giving, caring and sharing. His trademark was maintaining an `attitude of gratitude' and he firmly believed in service, often saying that one had to 'give it away, to keep it. ' A gift to Dan was a gift to someone else, since there was always someone who needed it more. Deacon Dan celebrated 31 years of continuous sobriety in the Kingdom of Heaven on Feb. 25, 1999.
Loved by nearly all who came in contact with him, `Deacon' was most special to the teens and young adults he counseled. Teaching in a language they could understand, he was viewed as a peer rather than an authority figure. In carrying his message, Deacon reached thousands of people and saved countless lives through perseverance and devotion. His legacy is the innumerable people whose lives are better for having known him.
An employee of Aargus Security Systems, Dan will also be missed by tenants and visitors to the building at 645 North Michigan Avenue, where he worked as site supervisor since 1971.
Deacon Dan was preceded in death by his mother, Loretta, in 1949; his father, Daniel, in 1976; and his stepmother, Erma Collins, in 1992. He was also preceded in death by the many young adults who even Deacon Dan could not save from unfortunate and premature deaths, which at last count numbered more than 100.
Donations in honor of Daniel J. Collins should be made to St. Catherine of Siena Parish, 38 N. Austin Blvd., Oak Park, IL 60302. Funds collected will be distributed to appropriate charities supported by Dan.
