Roger was a Down syndrome child, a boy with a heart and soul like any other, but with a chromosome count that would both challenge and change the course of his life and his family's. At the age of 9, Roger began attending a residential school, coming home to spend weekends and holidays with his brother and two sisters. At the age of 15, he was dealt a second `cross' when he became completely blind due to cataracts. This devastating loss not only plunged him into darkness, but silenced his verbal development as well.
In 1950 Roger came to live at the Shapiro Development Center and began adjusting to the home and `family' who would be his daily companions for the rest of his life. There, in spite of his challenges, his personality grew and developed into a style that was all his own.
Roger loved dogs and cats and enjoyed listening to television and radio. Rock 'n' roll became the beat of this `different drummer. ' One man among many good people at Shapiro touched both his life and his soul. Father Terry Harmon had conducted services at the center for many years and came to know Roger well. Near the end of 1998 Roger was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, and on Jan. 1, 1999 Fr. Harmon baptized him, his family claiming for him the promise of his Creator and Savior. After 59 years of life with Down syndrome, he began Eternity whole and perfect, with the gift of sight that far exceeds that which he once had, and surrounded by the love that was always his, from the day he first set foot in the world.
Surviving are his siblings, Betty Elaine Wilkinson, `Judy Kelly' of Honolulu, Hawaii, Richard (Lillian) Bird Wilkinson of Aurora and Judith (Mel) Wilkinson Dunn of Geneva; nieces and nephews, Julie and Lisa Field, Christina (Brett) Oliver, Richard Wilkinson Jr., Joy (Chuck) Martin, Richard (Toni) Vester, Jonathan (Judy) Vester, G. Adam (Teresa) Vester, Lori (Michael) Dunn-Reier and Andrea Lynn (Brian) Johanson; 18 great-nieces and -nephews; and a `family' of dear friends at Shapiro Development Center in Kankakee.
