Susan McNees of Carol Stream
Funeral services for Susan McNees (nee Barton), 47, will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, at Heritage Presbyterian Church, 965 Kuhn Rd., Carol Stream. She will lie in state from 9 a.m. until the time of the services.
Born Aug. 23, 1951, in Chicago, she died Saturday, March 27, 1999, at home. Burial will be in Assumption Cemetery, Wheaton.
Mrs. McNees was a member of the Jaycees, Optimist Club, Rotary Club and many PTA and PTO organizations at Jay Stream and Western Trail Schools. She was a member of the Friends of Carol Stream Library, founder and chairperson of School District 93 Children Authors Festival, Carol Stream Village Trustee from 1985 to 1993, and member of School District 93 Board from 1996 until the present. She was 1990 Female Citizen of the Year, 1996 Special Female Citizen of the Year and had a street named in her honor.
Survivors include her husband, Robert McNees; children, Christopher, Scott and Brian McNees; sister, Marilyn Barton; and parents, Clifford and Marianne Barton.
Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. today, at Brust Funeral Home, 415 N. Gary Ave., Carol Stream.

Wayne A. Newell of Libertyville
Services for Wayne A. Newell, 75, will be held on Thursday, at Burnett-Dane Funeral Home, 120 W. Park Ave., Libertyville.

Born June 29, 1923, in Hermansville, Mich., he passed away Tuesday, March 23, 1999, at Condell Medical Center.
A resident of Libertyville for most of his life, Mr. Newell was a 1941 graduate of Libertyville High School. He was a veteran of the
Army, having served in the Philippine Islands during World War II, and a member of Libertyville VFW Post #8741. Prior to his retirement, Mr. Newell was employed by the International Harvester Corporation. Among his special interests, he was a former Little League Baseball coach.
Surviving are his daughter, Debbie (Warren) Krueger of Libertyville; sons, Gary (Lisa) Newell of Libertyville, Kelly Newell of St. Charles and Neal Newell of Vernon Hills; and granddaughter, Sarah Newell.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Anna Newell; wife, Jane Holmgren Newell, on Jan. 9, 1992; sister, Eileen Shutich; and brother, Jack Newell.

Felix W. Niewinski 45-year resident of Wheaton
Funeral services for Felix W. Niewinski, 72, will begin at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, at Williams-Kampp Funeral Home, 430 E. Roosevelt Road (one block east of Naperville Road), Wheaton, and continue to St. Mark Church for a 10 a.m. blessing.
Mr. Niewinski died Monday, March 29, 1999, at Central DuPage Hospital in Winfield. Interment will be in St. Isidore Cemetery.
He was the beloved husband of Stella (nee Tymenski), with whom he would have celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary on Tuesday, March 30, 1999; loving father of Felix (Patty), Alice (Curt) Misavage, Luci (Jimmy) Moravcik, David, Kathy (Steve) Allison, Mary (Mark) Heiring and Michael (Iridia); dear grandfather of Grant, Patrick, Phillip, Gabrielle Niewinski, Chris and Tim Misavage, Amy and Ryan Moraveik, Tonya and Joshua Moeck, Emily Heiring and a 12th grandchild due in June;and fond brother of Estelle, Barney, Esther, Chet, Mary, Francis, Frank, Leona, and the late John, Raymond, Agnes, Clarence and Ted.

Born Sept. 8, 1980, in Hoffman Estates, the son of Hector and Rosemary Roman Ocasio, he died Sunday, March 28, 1999, at Provena St. Joseph Hospital. Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery.

He was the husband of Janice B. (nee Figlesthaler); father of Jim and Scott; son of Thelma and Jack Shopinski; brother of Ronald (Terry) Shopinsky and Pat (Frank) Rinaudo; son-in-law of Erna Jenssen; and uncle of many nieces and nephews.

Patrick M. Shrum of Carpentersville

He was a 14-year resident of the area and an employee of The Rec Room Furniture Store in Algonquin.
Survivors include his parents, Patrick J. and Kathy L. (nee Webster) Shrum of Carpentersville; brothers, Jason and Christopher, both of Carpentersville; maternal grandmother, Lynn Webster Giesen of Carpentersville; paternal grandfather, Willard Shrum of the Hines VA Hospital; and many aunts, cousins and friends.

Erwin A. `Swede' Sommers formerly of Elgin
Services for Erwin A. `Swede' Sommers, 85, of Williams Bay, Wis., formerly of Elgin, will be held at 10 a.m. today, at Laird Funeral Home, 310 S. State St., Elgin.
Born Feb. 7, 1914, in Elgin, to Albert and Grace Sommers, he died Sunday, March 28, 1999, in Janesville, Wis. Burial will be in Bluff City Cemetery, Elgin.
Mr. Sommers participated in many of the local sporting activities as a youth and was one of the first Little League managers in Elgin. He was also a member of the Elgin Turners.
Surviving arehis wife, Elnora Sommers of Williamsbay; children, Lary (Nancy) Sommers of West Chicago, Sue (Denis) Creadon of South Elgin and Jeffrey (Gerri) Sommers of Doyles Town, Pa.; stepdaughter, Diann (Lester) Neuman of Streamwood; 11 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother, James (Roberta) Sommers; and sisters, Helen Powers, Dolores Phillips and Mary Singleton.
He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Helen Sommers; and two sisters.

William R. Stickling of Elgin
Funeral services for William R. Stickling, 69, will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at Laird Funeral Home, 310 S. State St., Elgin, with the Rev. Joseph F. Kulak officiating.
Born Feb. 12, 1920, in Elgin, the son of Frank and Alta Stickling, he died Monday, March 29, 1999, at Provena St. Joseph Hospital. Burial will be in Bluff City Cemetery.
Mr. Stickling was a graduate of the Naval Academy at Annapolis. He attained the rank of lieutenant commmander and saw active duty during the
Korean War, the Cuban Missile Crisis and the Vietname War. Since retiring from the Navy, he had been actively involved in the development efforts of downtown Elgin. He owned the Tower Building and the Professional Building in Elgin, and dedicated his efforts to the restoration of these historically significant buildings.
Surviving are his first cousins, Mary Beth Stading and Shirley (Al) Steffen, as well as his second cousins, Jay Goedert (son of Mr. and Mrs. George Goedert), Doug Stading and Russell Stading.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, John Stickling.

John Rawlins Thomas of Lake Barrington
A memorial service to honor the life of John Rawlins Thomas, 20, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 17, at St. Michael's Episcopal Church, 647 Dundee Avenue, Barrington.
Born March 19, 1979, in Pittsfield, Mass., John lost his battle with leukemia last Wednesday, March 24, 1999, at Duke University Medical Center, five days after his 20th birthday.
He had received a bone marrow transplant the previous Wednesday, March 17, but with his immune system so totally compromised by the pre-treatments, he was unable to fight off a raging infection that, in the end, caused his death.
While his time with us was all too short, he lived a life full of many adventures that most of us can only dream about. He traveled the world, scuba diving on the GreatBarrier Reef in Australia, white water rafting in Nepal, climbed the Great Wall in Chicago, flew an airplane over Hong Kong and canoed the Boundary Waters wilderness area in Minnesota.
The one constant in the nomadic life his family has chosen was his annual visits with his grandparents in Colorado. He loved skiing and mastered the double black diamonds at Aspen Highlands. As a younger child at adventure camps in Colorado, he hiked a 14, 000-foot peak and went white water rafting on the Colorado and Green Rivers in Colorado and Utah.
He loved trout fishing with his grandfather in the streams and lakes high in the Rockies. For his high school graduation present from Barrington High School in 1997, he chose to go sky diving with a group of his friends south of Chicago. Finally, he achieved the first step of his lifelong dream to become a commercial airline pilot when he received his private pilot's license lastJune after finishing his freshman year at Embry Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach, Fla.
Survivors include his parents, Robert M. and Patricia W. Thomas and sister, Elizabeth H. Thomas, all of Lake Barrington; maternal grandparents, George and Betty Wear of Glenwood Springs, Colo.; and paternal grandmother, Martha J. Thomas of Charleston, S. C.
Many have asked what they can do for the family. Your continued friendship and prayers for John and his family are a lasting comfort. If you can find it in your hearts, please give blood or platelets whenever you can. There are too many others like John who need these to continue their own battles with this insidious disease. Or, if you can find time in your busy lives, support your local `Make-A-Wish' organization, giving some other child with cancer a positive experience to remember.
