Evelyn J. Tierney of Maple Park
Services for Evelyn J. Tierney, 88, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, at Conley Funeral Home, 116 W. Pierce St., Elburn. The Rev. Robert Vaughn, interim pastor of Grace United Methodist Church, Maple Park, will officiate.
Born March 13, 1911, in Virgil Township, at the family home where she lived her entire life, she passed away Thursday, April 1, 1999, at Delnor Community Hospital, Geneva. Interment will be in Gardner Cemetery, Route 38, Kaneville Township, following the services.
Evelyn graduated from Maple Park Community High School with the Class of 1929 and also studied for a time at the University of Illinois. She returnedhome where she became the head nurse, hired hand, and `chief cook and bottle washer' at the farm. Though she nevermarried, she was devoted to her family. In sickness and in health, for better or worse, and for richer or poorer, Evelyn was there for everyone.
Her caring extended well beyond her immediate family to embrace her community as well. Continuing in her father's footsteps, she became the Virgil Township assessor after his death in 1946. She heldthat office until 1961 when she became the Virgil Township clerk. Through the years that followed, many a township meeting was held at her kitchen table and Evelyn served proudly as clerk until 1985. Her mother served as sexton of Gardner Cemetery from its inception and Evelyn took on that post as well, following her mother's death in 1954. It was a job her heart held tenatiously until the day of her death.
Evelyn was a member of Grace United Methodist Church in Maple Park and the O. U. R. of the church. Her cakes and crafts were legendary in the community and Evelyn continued to provide both to church bazaars and dinners long after she was able to attend them.
Evelyn leaves a lifetime of memories in the hearts and minds of countless friends, neighbors and adversaries. Independent, outspoken and forthright, one never wondered where Evelyn stood on any matter.
They might have wondered, however, at the soft heart that lay beneath her `sweet and salty' demeanor. The last of her generation, she was also the last of a pioneering breed of women who were tough enough to take on the rigors of a Spartan country life, yet thoughtful enough to turn a tender hand to an aching heart.
Surviving are her brother-in-law, Matthew Yagen; nephews, Jeffrey (Peg) Yagen and Michael Yagen, both of Maple Park, and Gary Tierney of South Elgin; niece, Beverly Tierney of St. Charles; and great-niece, Margaret J. Yagen.
