At the time of her retirement in 1980, she was head of the Department of General Nursing at the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Nursing.
Some of Mrs. Ellsworth's more memorable positions include her tenure as Director of Nursing Service and of the School of Nursing at the New England Hospital for Women and Children in Boston, which is the nursing school from which Linda Richards and Mary Mahony graduated before the turn of the century.
Ms. Richards is generally acknowledged to be America's first trained nurse, and Ms. Mahony, America's first black trained nurse. Mrs. Ellsworth then moved to the national nursing scene as staff member of the National League for Nursing Education and participated in the massive structural changes which resulted in the formation of three American nursing organizations from the former six. Continuing on the staff of the newly formed National League for Nursing, during the 1950s she conducted numerous institutes and workshops designed to teach practicing nurses the administrative skills required for developing and managing hospitals and nursing services. This program ran collaboratively with the American Hospital Association, whose nursing specialist, Marian Fox, servedas co-conductor. Together, they conducted workshops in every state except Alaska.
During this phase of her career, Mrs. Ellsworth was also a consultant for the United States Department of State, traveling throughout several LatinAmerican countries and to the Central Treaty Organization countries of Turkey, Iran and Pakistan to consult on thedevelopment of nursing and hospitals in those countries.
Mrs. Ellsworth moved to Illinois in 1960, because of her husband's transfer to the midwest, and continued to conduct workshops to teach administrative nursing to practicing nurses throughout the state.
These workshops were a collaborative effort betwe Myrtle A. Gierke (nee Field), 85, of Lisle, died Wednesday, April 28, 1999. Arrangements were made by Blake-Lamb Funeral Home, Lisle, (630) 964-9392.
