Isom Halsey of Elk Grove Village
Services for Isom Halsey, 99, will be held at 11 a. m. Saturday, at the Lutheran Church of Saint Luke, 410 S. Rush St., Itasca.
Born Sept. 7, 1899, in Independence, Va., he passed away Wednesday, Jan. 6, 1999, at home. Burial will be in St. Luke Cemetery, Itasca, following the services.
A dairy farmer in his youth, Mr. Halsey spent most of his life as a floral nursery worker. He retired in 1969. A resident ofElk Grove Village since 1965, he was an active member of the Elk Grove Senior Center and a member of the Lutheran Church of Saint Luke in Itasca.
He was the devoted husband for 70 years of Blanche Halsey; beloved father of Maurice (Dorothy) Halsey of Summerville, S. C.; grandfather of Charles (Hattie) Halsey of Columbia, S. C., and Elizabeth (Robert) Brown of Summerville, S. C.; and great-grandfather of Jessie and Heather Halsey, and Whitney and Hannah Brown. One of 11 children, he is also survived by his brother, Thomas Halsey of Gettysburg, Pa.; and sisters, Edna Cornett of Leesburg, Va., Reba Holdaway of Independence, Va. and Lena Summers of Culpepper, Va.
Visitation will be from 10 a. m. until the time of services Saturday, at the church.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Lutheran Church of Saint Luke, 410 S. Rush St., Itasca, IL 60143.
Arrangements were made by Grove Memorial Chapel, Elk Grove Village.

Arthur John Hedberg formerly of Prospect Heights
Arthur John Hedberg, 78, died Saturday, Dec. 26, 1998, in Tulsa, Okla., where he had been living with his son, Dean Hedberg, for several months.
Born Oct. 6, 1920, in Chicago, the son of Thor Waldemar and Julia Skalski Hedberg, Mr. Hedberg was a long time Illinois resident. Cremation has already taken place and a private family memorial service will be held at a later date.
He served in the Civilian Conservation Corps from June 1937 to June 1939. A World War II veteran, he enlisted in the Army and served from July 1940 to June 1945. During his service, Mr. Hedberg saw action in Africa, Sicily, Salerno, Anzio, France and Germany. He received the Silver Star for Gallantry in Sept. 1943, and the Bronze Star for Valorous Conduct in June 1945.
Several articles about his war time experiences appeared in the Prospect Heights Herald during this time.
He married Gretchen Gray on July 2, 1949, in Prospect Heights. They lived in Prospect Heights until 1980, when he retired from Universal Oil Products and they moved to Southern California. Mrs. Hedberg died on Jan. 4, 1993.
Mr. Hedberg earned a bachelor of electrical engineering degree from the Chicago Technical College in Dec. 1952.
He was actively involved with Boy Scouting in Prospect Heights serving as an assistant scoutmaster there.
Survivors include his sons, Dean B. (Connie J. )Hedberg of Tulsa, Okla., Dale T. Hedberg of Breese, Ill. and Gary G. Hedberg of Elk Grove, Calif.; daughter, Dawn H. (David J. )Jenkins of Hillsboro, Ore.; grandchildren, Brian Hedberg of Florida, David Hedberg and Jennifer Hedberg both of Oklahoma, Christopher, Jeffrey, Dana and Nathan Hedberg of Illinois, Garon and Randee Hedberg of Elk Grove, Calif., and Kevin, Kendra and Kelsey Jenkins of Hillsboro, Ore.; and sister, Lillian Monkowski of Chicago.
The family suggests memorial contributions be made in his name to the American Diabetes. Association, 380 SE Spokane, #110, Portland, OR 97202.

Joseph `Joe' Jania formerly of Countryside
Services for Joseph `Joe' Jania, 89, will begin at 9 a. m. Saturday, at Friedrich-Jones Funeral Home, 44 S. Mill St., Naperville, and continue with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a. m. at St. Irene's Catholic Church, 28W531 Warrenville Road, Warrenville, IL 60555.
Born July 2, 1909, in Chicago, he died Tuesday, Jan. 5, 1999, at home. Entombment will be in Resurrection Mausoleum in Justice.
Mr. Jania was born on the West Side of Chicago and grew up in Cicero. He was employed as a tool and die maker for more than 20 years with General Motors Fisher Body Division in Willow Springs and was a member of the United Auto Workers (UAW). He and his family lived in Countryside from 1959 until his retirement in 1978, and then moved to Port Charlotte, Fla. He moved back to Aurora in 1989 and was a member of St. Irene's Church in Warrenville.
Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Irene E. Jania (nee Wilk) of Aurora, whom he married Sept. 10, 1938; children, Joseph M. (Catherine) Jania of Lawrenceville, Ga., Diana Pierce of Naperville, Ronald Jania of Woodstock and John M. (Denise) Jania of Naperville; 12 grandchildren; and three greatgrandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Fay Becvarik of Arizona; brother, Henry `Hank' Jania of Oak Brook; sonin-law, Harry Inda of Westmont; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Kathryn Inda; parents, John and Mary (nee Walencik) Jania; sister, Helen Postillion; and brother, Frank Jania.
Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p. m. today, at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorials in Mr. Jania's name may be made to St. Irene's Catholic Church or to VNA Hospice, 1245 Corporate Blvd., Aurora, IL 60504.

Byron John Koch of Des Plaines
A funeral Mass for Byron John Koch, 71, will be held at 11 a. m. Saturday, at St. Emily Church, Mount Prospect.
Born Oct. 9, 1927, he died Wednesday, Jan. 6, 1999, at Holy Family Medical Center in Des Plaines. Burial will be in All Saints Cemetery, Des Plaines.
A resident of Des Plaines for 39 years, he was retired after 37 years of employment with St. Jude League/ Claretian Publishing on Monroe St. in Chicago, as a general manager. He was a Navy veteran of World War II and Korea.
Survivors include his wife, Jewel (nee Beifuss); children, John J. (Gail) of Spring Grove and Margaret (Anthony) Rossi of Mount Prospect; mother, Rose Koch; sister, Yvonne (Arthur) Chuzum of Evanston; grandchildren, Lance Johnson, Kurt Koch and Lauren Rossi; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Catherine (nee Gaynor); and father, John D. Koch.
Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p. m. today, at Oehler Funeral Home, 555 Lee St., Des Plaines.

Elmer E. Koch of Des Plaines
Services for Elmer E. Koch, 86, will be held at 11 a. m. Saturday, at Oehler Funeral Home, 555 Lee St., Des Plaines.
Born Feb. 3, 1912, in Chicago, he died Wednesday, Jan. 6, 1999, at Holy Family Medical Center. Burial will be in Memory Gardens Cemetery.
Retired from National Safety Council, he was the husband of the late Emma (nee Frederick); father of Charles (Sandra) Koch; and brother of Alice Romzo.
Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p. m. today, at the funeral home.

Robert Edward Koe of Carol Stream
A memorial service for Robert Edward Koe, 80, of Windsor Park Manor in Carol Stream, formerly of Lake Bluff and Riverside, will be held at 3 p. m. Sunday, at First Presbyterian Church, 715 N. Carlton Ave., Wheaton, with Dr. Douglas J. Brouwer officiating.
Born March 15, 1918, in Chicago, he died suddenly Wednesday, Jan. 6, 1999, at Central DuPage Hospital.
Mr. Koe graduated from Morton High School and Northwestern University, and received his master's degree from Southern Connecticut University. He served in the Navy during World War II and the Korean War. In 1939, Mr. Koe began his career with General Electric, where he workeduntil retiring in 1981, having served in the Hotpoint division for several years. His career at G. E. took him to Puerto Rico, where he was controller for two plants. He then returned to work in New York and Bridgeport, Conn.
He is survived by his wife, Shirley; children, Sharon Koe Berryman of Houston, Texas and Robert E. (Marlene) Koe of Lake Forest; grandchildren; Kim, Wendy, Linda and Scott Berryman and Robert, Kirsten and Kathy Koe; great-grandson, Nathan Berryman; and sister, Jean Zavod of Arkansas.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Willard Koe.
Visitation will be from 2 to 6 p. m. Saturday, at Hultgren Funeral Home, 304 N. Main St., Wheaton.

Elizabeth L. (Torroll) Kovar of Aurora
Services for Elizabeth L. (Torroll) Kovar, 75, will be held at10 a. m. today, at Yurs Funeral Home, 405 E. Main St., St. Charles. The Rev. John Rodgers will officiate.
Born Dec. 27, 1923, in DuQuoin, Ill., the daughter of Peter and Florence Girup, she died Sunday, Jan. 3, 1999, at Countryside Care Center in Aurora. Burial will be in Union Cemetery, St. Charles.
Survivors include her sons, Peter (Cindy) Torroll of St. Charles and Joseph (Sue) Torroll of Wheaton; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; brothers, Fred (Mary Ann) Girup of Florida, Glen Girup of South Carolina and John (Mary Lou) of Wisconsin; and severalnieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and brothers, Jerry Girup and Peter Girup.

Mary C. Krance of West Chicago
A funeral Mass for Mary C. Krance, 78, will be held at 9:30 a. m. Saturday, at St. Mary's Church, 140 N. Oakwood Ave., West Chicago.
Born March 31, 1920, in Chicago, she passed away Wednesday, Jan. 6, 1999, at home after a short illness. Burial will be in Queen of Heaven Cemetery, Hillside.
She resided in West Chicago for the past 21 years, and formerly lived in Elmhurst for 20 years. She was a member of St. Mary's Church in West Chicago.
Survivors include her husband, Stanley Krance; daughters, Deborah (James) Cunningham of Elmhurst and Cecelia (Martin) Nero of Naperville; sons, Dr. Robert (Pam) Krance of Houston, Texas and Mark (Frances) Krance of Peotone, Ill.; six grandchildren; and sister, Barbara (Joseph) Bowens of Rolling Meadows.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Daniel and Cecelia Patt; and brother, Cyril (Bud) Patt.
Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p. m. today, at Norris-Walen Funeral Home, 132 Fremont St. (one block north of Washington St. ),West Chicago.

Paul H. Levene of Lombard
Funeral services for Paul H. Levene, 88, a resident of Lombard for the past four years, formerly of Glen Ellyn since 1950, will be celebrated at 2 p. m. Saturday, at Grace Lutheran Church, 493 Forest Ave., Glen Ellyn. The Rev. Robin Currie will officiate.
Born Nov. 26, 1910, in Galesburg, he diedWednesday, Jan. 6, 1999, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove.
Private interment will be in Oakridge Cemetery, Hillside.
Mr. Levene, a Navy veteran of World War II, was a former billing clerk for a steel manufacturing company. He was a former reed instrument player with various bands, a member of Grace Lutheran Church of Glen Ellyn and a former member of the Villa Park Garden Club.
He is survived by his wife, Selma M. Levene of Lombard; stepson, Robert (Beth) Huizenga of Glen Ellyn; stepdaughter-in-law, Esther Huizenga of Apple Canyon, Ill.; nephew, David (Lori) Levene of Mount Prospect; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his stepson, Donald R. Huizenga.
Visitation will be from 1 to 2 p. m. Saturday, at the church.
In lieu of flowers, memorialcontributions to the church would be appreciated.

Margaret Mary `Maggie' Lutz
A memorial Mass for Margaret Mary `Maggie' Lutz (nee Hawk), will be held at 2p. m. Saturday, at St. Margaret Mary Church in Naperville.
Maggie was fortified with the Sacraments of Holy Mother Church, Thursday, Dec. 31, 1998. Interment was in Calvary Cemetery, St. Louis, Mo.
She was the dear mother of Brendan J. Lutz; dear daughter of Mary M. and the late James E. Hawk Jr.; dear sister of John T. Hawk, Bridget Hawk, Joseph P. Hawk, Anne H. Donovan, Elizabeth M. Hawk and the late J. Edward Hawk III; dear friend of Stuart S. Lutz; and aunt, niece, cousin and friend.
Arrangements were made by Friedrich-Jones Funeral Home, Naperville.
