Virginia `Ginny' Powroznik of Wildwood
A funeral Mass for Virginia `Ginny' Powroznik, 75, of Wildwoodand formerly of Skokie, will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, at St. Joseph Catholic Church.
Born Nov. 11, 1923, in Chicago, she died Saturday, July 10, 1999. Burial will be in Ascension Cemetery, Libertyville.
Mrs. Powroznik had been a resident of Wildwood for more than 20 years. She was very active in the St. Joseph Parish.
Survivors include her children, Ray (Helen) Powroznik; Mary (Glenn) Lauer and Barry (Kathy) Rader; grandchildren, Greg, Amy, Karen,Laura, Eric and Megan; brothers, Anthony and Bruno Jaroszek; sister, Irene Porida; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ray A. Powroznik, of Rader and Company Builders.
Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. today, at Strang Funeral Chapel & Crematorium, Ltd., 410 E. Belvidere Road, Grayslake.

Paula Schmidt, 88, of Schaumburg, died Saturday, July 10, 1999. Arrangements are being made by Brust Funeral Home, Carol Stream, (630) 510-0044.

Joanna P. Sheehan of Glen Ellyn
Prayers for Joanna P. Sheehan, 61, formerly of Addison, will be said at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, at Williams-Kampp Funeral Home, 430 E. Roosevelt Rd. (one blocks east of Naperville Rd.), Wheaton. Mass will follow at 10 a.m. at St. James the Apostle Church, Glen Ellyn.
Born Feb. 9, 1938, in Rome, N. Y., she died Friday, July 9, 1999, at Loyola Medical Center in Maywood. Interment will be in Queen of Heaven Cemetery.
Joanna was raised in Rome, N. Y. and was a cashier at Dominick's Food Store for 24 years, retiring in October 1998.
She was the beloved wife of Dennis; dear mother of Wendy (Daniel) Jordan, Patrick (Birute) and Dennis; loving grandmother of Michelle, Alexis, Nicole and Brandon; devoted daughter of the late Joseph and Victoria Petrelli; fond sister of Virginia (Joseph) Consiglio, Anthony (Marie) Petrelli and Joseph (Anita) Petrelli; and dear daughter-in-law of Charlotte and the late Patrick Sheehan.
Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. today, at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, donations to Cardinal Bernardin Cancer Center, 2160 S. First Ave., Maywood, IL 60153, are appreciated.

Jean `Skokie' Skokowski of Gurnee
A Mass of Christian Burial for Jean `Skokie' Skokowski (nee Cankar), 83, of Gurnee and formerly of Waukegan, will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, at St. Paul the Apostle Church in Gurnee.
Born June 18, 1916, in Waukegan, she died Thursday, July 8, 1999, at Provena St. Therese Medical Center. Burial will be in Ascension Cemetery, Libertyville.
A lifelong resident of the area, Mrs. Skokowski had assisted her husband, Al, in managing Skokie's Lounge in North Chicago. She was a member of St. Paul the Apostle Church in Gurnee and was a former member of Mother of God Church.
She was also a past president of the North Chicago VFW Women's Auxiliary and a member of St. Mary's Lodge K. S. K. J.
Surviving are her loving daughters, Jean Slovnik of Gurnee and Patricia Skokie of Gurnee; grandchildren, Kristan (Kevin) Tuohy, and Frank, Joel and Amy Slovnik; and two great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her brothers, Stanley (Flo) Cankar of Waukegan and Joseph Cankar of Gurnee; sisters, Fritzi (Tom) Lisk of Antioch, Mimi (Bill) Witek of Gurnee and Millie (Jerry) Tait of Gurnee; and many niecesand nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Alexander `Skokie' Skokowski, in 1984, and her brother, John.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today, at Salata Gurnee Funeral Home, 4190 Old Grand Ave., Gurnee.

Kathryn A. Smith of Lake in the Hills
Services for Kathryn A. Smith, 44, will be held at 8 p.m. Tuesday, at Querhammer & Flagg Funeral Home, 500 W. Terra Cotta Ave. (Route 176), Crystal Lake.
Born March 30, 1955, to Kenneth and Barbara (nee Wise) Smith, she died Friday, July 9, 1999, at her home. Interment will be private.
Mrs. Smith was the owner of Smith Leonard & Associates Advertising Agency of Lake in the Hills.
Surviving are her husband, Christopher Erwin, whom she married July 16, 1994, in Des Plaines; daughters, Courtney and Misty Erwin of Lake in the Hills; son, Brian Erwin of Beach Park; mother, Barbara Smith of Homewood; sister, Karen Scott of Orlando, Fla.; and brothers, Christopher Smith of Winchester, Kendall Smith of Homewood and Brent Smith of Homewood.
She was preceded in death by her father.
Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, with services at 8 p.m., at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorials to the American Cancer Society would be appreciated.

Lois I. Thomas of Batavia
Private memorial services for Lois I. Thomas, 69, will be held Tuesday, at Yurs-Peterson Funeral Home, Batavia. Rev. Philip D. Lund will officiate.
Born Dec. 18, 1929, the daughter of Gustav and Marie (nee Johnson) Carlson, she passed away Friday, July 9, 1999, at Provena Pine View Care Center in St. Charles. Interment will be in West Batavia Cemetery.
Lois was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church in Batavia. She enjoyed working with arts and crafts and was noted for her works in oil, water colors and charcoal. She also enjoyed the great outdoors, gardening and garage sales. She devoted her life to her beloved family and will be dearlymissed.
Survivors include her daughter, Diane Thomas of Batavia; sons, Dennis (Charlene) Thomas of Batavia and David (Martha) Thomas of Elburn; grandchildren, Hayley, Heather, Chad and Damon Thomas; and stepgrandchildren, Shawn, Timothy and Cody Carey.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Robert W. Thomas, with whom she was united in marriage on Oct. 16, 1948, in Batavia; and her twin sister in infancy.

James E. `Jim' Tym of Aurora
Services for James E. `Jim' Tym, 89, a resident of Aurora since 1995 and formerly of Elgin and Geneva, will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, at Friedrich-Jones Funeral Home, 44 S. Mill St., Naperville. The Rev. Anna Lee Hisey Pierson will officiate.
Born March 4, 1910, in Mitchell, S. D., he died Saturday, July 10, 1999, at RushCopley Medical Center, Aurora. Interment will be private.
Mr. Tym had moved from South Dakota to Paris, Ill., at a young age. He was a graduate of the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, Mich., andwas employed for many years as an advertising salesman for several technical publications, including The Consulting Engineer and Power Engineering magazines, until his retirement in 1994. After his retirement, he began a second career as an artisan wood furniture maker and started a business called Period Styling. Mr. Tym was also an avid golfer and was a former member of the Elgin Country Club and a member of the Western Advertising Golfers Association (WAGA).
Survivors include his wife of 13 years, Janice A. Tym (nee Joew) of Aurora; daughters, Jane Higgins of Richland, Mich., and Elizabeth Zilke of Houston, Texas; son, Benjamin (Sue) Tym of Bridgeman, Mich.; stepchildren, Laura (Mark) Hastings of Elgin, Gregory (Cindy) Lee of Mount Prospect and Patrice (David) Cannella of Crystal Lake; 11 grandchildren; eight stepgrandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and former spouse, Jane Tym of Paris, Ill.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles F. and Mary Bessie Tym; an infant grandson, Charles Tym; and a sister, MaryMargaret Kramer.
Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorials in Mr. Tym's name may be made to the American Cancer Society, DuPage Area Office, 999 N. Main St., Glen Ellyn, IL 60137.

Lavara Walker of Bensenville
Memorial services for Lavara Walker (nee Ricks), 91, will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, at St. John United Church of Christ, Roselle and Algonquin Roads, Palatine. Dr. John Bell will officiate and Rev. Ronald Pribyl will assist.
Born in Henry County, Ind., she died Monday, July 5, 1999, at Elmhurst Memorial Hospital. Burial will be in Earlham Cemetery, Richmond, Ind.
Mrs. Walker was a retired legal secretary. She had previously lived with her daughter, Marilyn Buban, in Mount Prospect since 1994, and prior to that, had been a 50-year resident of Richmond, Ind.
She was the wife of the late Waldo Walker, Walter H. Eggert and Donald L. Miller; mother of Marilyn J. Miller (the late Joseph E. )Buban; grandmother of Kathleen (John) Diem of Elgin, Jeffrey M. (Rhonda) Buban of Elgin and Anthony J. (Victoria) Buban of Geneva; great-grandmother of Michael, Stephen and Meghan Diem, Jeffrey and Amy Buban, and James, Allyssa and Anna Buban; daughter of the late Walter and Helen Ross Ricks; sister of Mary R. Platts of New Castle, Ind. and the late William L. Ricks and Janet Martin; and aunt and cousin of many.
Memorials may be made to St. John United Church of Christ.
Arrangements were made by Matz Funeral Home, Mount Prospect.

Elsie Wede of Arlington Heights
Funeral services for Elsie Wede (nee Hamann), 87, a longtime residentof Arlington Heights and formerly of Clearwater, Fla., will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, at Faith Lutheran Church, 431 S. Arlington Heights Road, Arlington Heights, where she will lie in state from 9 a.m. until the time of services.
Born March 15, 1912, in Palatine, she died Saturday, July 10, 1999, at Northwest Community Healthcare, Arlington Heights. Burial will be in St. Luke's Cemetery, Itasca.
Surviving are her daughters, Marlene (Wesley) Kastning of Arlington Heights and Carol (Richard) Hill of Fort Worth, Texas; grandchildren, Debra, Pamela, Candace, Courtney and Corrie; and 11 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur Wede.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today, at Glueckert Funeral Home, Ltd., 1520 N. Arlington Heights Road (four blocks south of Palatine Road), Arlington Heights.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to Faith Lutheran Church, 431 S. Arlington Heights Road, Arlington Heights, IL 60005.

Bernice Wiener
Services for Bernice Wiener (nee Arnold) were held Wednesday, at the Burton L. Hirsch Chapel in Pittsburgh, Pa.
Mrs. Wiener died Monday, July 5, 1999, in Pittsburgh. Interment was in West View Cemetery of Rodef Shalom Congregation in Pittsburgh.
She was the wife of the late Dr. George W. Wiener; mother of Jill W. (Mike) Beck of Long Grove and the late Gary R. Wiener; sister of Helen Epstein of Pittsburgh; and grandmother of Jennifer G. and Allison S. Beck.
The family suggests contributions be made to the Muscular Dystrophy Association,400 Penn Center Blvd., Pittsburgh, PA 15235, the ALS Foundation, 1323 Forbes Ave., Suite 200, Pittsburgh, PA 15213or the American Heart Association, 10 Duff Rd., Pittsburgh, PA 15235.

Cmdr. Robert W. Keniston, USN (Ret.)
Services with full military honors were held on July 6, at Arlington National Cemetery, for Cmdr. Robert W. Keniston, 74, of Alexandria, Va.
Born Nov. 24, 1924, in Portland, Maine, he passed away Tuesday, June 22, 1999, at Fort Belvoir, Va., from complications of Parkinson's Disease.
A veteran of World War II, with service in the South Pacific, he retired from the Navy in July 1969. He was a graduate of the University of Maine.
Survivors include his loving wife of 51 years, Margaret; children, Robert Jr. (Susan) of Wheaton, Margaret (Kurt) Cushwa of Hagerstown, Md., Nancy Allen of Warrenton, Va., Paul (Deena) of Manassas, Va. and David (Lynne) of Vancouver, Wash.; 11 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and brothers, Thomas and Richardof Maine.
A Mass of Christian Burial was offered at on June 26, at Good Shepherd Catholic Church in Alexandria.
Contributions made to the American Parkinson Disease Association, 1250 Hylan Blvd., Suite 4-B, Staten Island, NY 10305, would be appreciated.
Arrangements were made by Demaine Funeral Home, Alexandria.
