Florence A. Spitzer of Mundelein
A Mass of Christian Burial for Florence A. Spitzer, 94, will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday, at Santa Maria del Popolo Church, 116 N. Lake St., Mundelein.
Born Nov. 25, 1904, in Chicago, she died Thursday, July 15, 1999, at Condell Medical Center, Libertyville. Interment will follow Mass, in St. Boniface Cemetery, Chicago.
Miss Spitzer had been a resident of Mundelein for more than 40 years. She was a member of the Mundelein Senior Center and the Santa Maria del Popolo Parish in Mundelein.
Survivors include her sister, Loretta (the late George) Luecker; brother, Robert (Helen) Spitzer; sister-in-law, Rita Spitzer; and nieces and nephews, Mary Therese (the late Al) Schaefer, Dolores (Fred) Steffens, Carolyn (Tulon) Stancil Sr., Bernadette Luecker, George (the late Donna) Luecker, Roberta `Bobbi' (Paul) Philipp, Robert (Rosanne) Spitzer, Thomas (Sharon) Spitzer, Cecilia (Thomas) O'Connor, Joan (Patrick) Schoenstene, and Marian (Dan) Hanekamp. She was also the great-aunt and great-great-aunt of many, and great-great-great-aunt of one.
She was preceded in death by her brother, Ralph, and sister, Dorothy.
Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. Sunday, at Kristan Funeral Home P. C., 219 W. Maple Ave. (Route 176), Mundelein.
In lieu of flowers, Masses would be appreciated.

Elaine R. Stafford, 50, of Westchester, died Wednesday, July 14, 1999. Arrangements were made by Knollcrest Funeral Home, Lombard, (630) 932-1500.

Richard A. Stanger of Wauconda
Memorial services for Richard A. Stanger, 69, will be held at 10 a.m. today, at Messiah Lutheran Church, 25225 W. Ivanhoe Rd., Wauconda. Pastor Melanie Potuznik will officiate.
Born May 16, 1930, in Melrose Park, he died Wednesday, July 14, 1999, at Good Shepherd Hospital in Barrington. Interment will be private.
Mr. Stanger retired from the Wauconda Fire Department after 22 years of service.
He was a former Little League coach and scoutmaster in Wauconda. He was one of the founding members of the Wauconda Pool Foundation and an occasional Santa Claus at Christmas.
Survivors include his wife, Sharon (nee Grantham); children, Rick (Michele), Julie Quick, Michael (Cheryl) and Christopher (Rhonda); grandchildren, Jaclyn and Richard Grantham Stanger, Michael Quick II, Michael and Ryan Stanger, and Kyle and Justin Stanger; and brothers, Edward (Jean) and Bud (Martha).
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Social Member Club of Wauconda Fire Department, 109 W. Liberty St., Wauconda, IL 60084 or Wauconda Boosters, 555 N. Main St., Wauconda, IL 60084.
Arrangements were made by Kisselburg-Wauconda Funeral Home, Wauconda.

Lydia Sumien of Ingleside
Services for Lydia Sumien (nee Mattes), 87, of Ingleside for the past 14 years, and formerly of Twain, Calif., and Glendale Heights, will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, at the K. K. Hamsher Funeral Home, Ltd., 12 N. Pistakee Lake Road, Fox Lake (the Chapel on the Lake).
Born Oct. 7, 1911, in Radomyschl, Ukraine, to Edward and Emila (nee Herriata) Mattes, she died Friday, July 16, 1999, at Condell Medical Center, Libertyville. Interment will be private.
Mrs. Sumien was a music teacher by profession and an accomplished pianist.
She also enjoyed cooking for her familiy and friends.
Surviving are her daughter, Helen (Hadyn) Kerner of Ingleside; granddaughters, Monica A. (Rudy) Linder and Deborah A. Kerner; great-grandson, Hadyn D. Cortez; and brothers, Waldema (Rose Marie) Mattes of Little Falls, N. J., and Adolph Mattes of Ukraine.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Theodore Sumien, in 1983; daughter, Eugenia Oponshcuk, in 1942; and sister, Zina Ada Mattes, in 1917.
Friends may call from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday, at the funeral home.

Edward D. Surroz of Grayslake
Services for Edward D. Surroz, 77, will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, at Shepherd of the Lakes Lutheran Church, 285 E. Washington St., Grayslake.
Born April 14, 1922, in a coal-mining town in the Colorado mountains, he passed away Wednesday, July 14, 1999, at Lake Forest Hospital. Interment will be in Avon Centre Cemetery, Grayslake.
Ed lived in Grayslake for 29 years where he was very active in community affairs and founded the Grayslake Development Corporation. He established a men's breakfast meeting (TOMCATS) and served on the Lake County Economic Development Committee. Ed was a longtime member of Shepherd of the Lake Lutheran Church. He worked in the Civilian Conservation Corps before joining the Navy at the age of 18. A Navy man for 20 years, he quickly rose to the rank of chief machinist mate and served in World War II, surviving the attack on Pearl Harbor.
At the age of 38, Ed retired from the Great Lakes Naval Base and began a career in real estate, working as officer manager of Poe and Poe Real Estate until forming his own company, United Real Estate and later Surroz Construction. He also formed the Multiple Listing Service for Lake County.
Ed is survived by his wife of 53 years, Donna; children, Dan Surroz, Keith (Sarah) Surroz and Deborah (Neil) Surroz-Weber; grandchildren, Brian, Stream, Bart and Gregory Weber, Steven Weber, Brett Weber, Hayleyanna Weber, and Rebecca and Ian; great-granddaughter, Haley; sister,Harriet (Chuck) Dobrunick; and several nieces and nephews.
Friends of the family may visit from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday, at Strang Funeral Chapel & Crematorium, Ltd., 410 E. Belvidere Rd., Grayslake.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Quade Amyloidosis Research Fund, Mayo Clinic, c/o Donna Surroz, P. O. Box 391, Grayslake, IL 60030, in his memory.

Frank Tarr of Des Plaines
Visitation for Frank Tarr, 79, of Des Plaines, will be held from 3 to 8 p.m. Sunday, at Matz Funeral Home, 410 E. Rand Road, Mount Prospect. Services will be private.
Born Oct. 8, 1919, in Chicago, he died Thursday, July 15, 1999, at Lutheran General Hospital, Park Ridge. Interment will be private.
Mr. Tarr was a retired industrial engineer and had worked for a manufacturing company.
He was the wife of IreneTarr (nee Toth); father of MaryRose (John) Murphy and Patricia (James) Rust; grandfather of Brian, Julie, Lauren, James and Michael; brother of Gus (Doris), Michael, and the late William and Paul (Lila) Tarr; and uncle of many nieces and nephews.
Memorials may be made to the Uhlich's Children's Home, 3737 N. Mozart Ave., Chicago, IL 60618.

Thomas E. Ventress of Des Plaines
A service of remembrance for Thomas E. Ventress, 74, will be held at 5 p.m. Friday, Aug. 20, at the Cutting Hall Theater, 150 E. Wood St., Palatine.
Born Oct. 31, 1924, in Chicago, hedied Tuesday, July 13, 1999, at Good Shepherd Hospital, Barrington.
Mr. Ventress was an avid fan of musicals and classic American playwrights. Active on both sides of the footlights, he directed and performed in more than 300 shows, mostly in the northwest suburbs of Chicago. Recently he directed `Wait Until Dark' and `Cinderella' in Palatine, and was seen as the grandfather in Elgin's `Night of the Iguana' and as Scrooge in the popular Christmas show at White Pines.
He was the dear brother of Joyce (Milton) Shepard and the late Barbara Kling; and fond uncle of many nieces and nephews.
Arrangements were made by Meadows Funeral Home, Rolling Meadows.

Richard O. Wagner of Des Plaines
Visitation for Richard O. Wagner, 82, will be held from 3:30 to 9 p.m. Sunday, at Nelson Funeral Home, 820 Talcott Road (at Cumberland), Park Ridge.
He died Thursday, July 15, 1999, at Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge.
Interment will be private.
Mr. Wagner was the founder and president of Wagner Brass Foundry, 1842 N. Elston Ave., in Chicago, which he started with his father and brother in 1941. He had the distinction of making the Harry Carey statue which stands outside of Wrigley Field. Mr. Wagner was also a member of the Edison Park Masonic Lodge for more than 50 years.
He was the loving husband of the late Rhoda `Jean' Wagner and special friend of Ruth Johns; beloved father of Barbara (Jerry) Louden, Richard (Leslie) Wagner, Janice (Greg) Powers and Linda (Bill) Hensel; proud grandfather of Pamela (Bill) Glauner, Michael (Tracy) and Craig Louden, Chrissy Wagner, Jennifer and Jonathon Powers, and Traci Hensel; great-grandfather of three; and fond brother ofFred A. Wagner.
Memorials made to Lutheran General Hospital would be appreciated.

Norman C. West Sr. of Batavia
Memorial services for Norman C. West Sr., 91, of Batavia, formerly of Philadelphia, Pa., will be held at St. Luke Presbyterian Church, 3910 Highland Ave., Downers Grove, at a day and time to be announced later.
Born Aug. 14, 1907, in Philadelphia, to George and Nellie (nee Colapy) West, he passed away Friday, July 16, 1999, at Provena Geneva Care Center, Geneva.
Mr. West was a retired police officer for the city of Philadelphia. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police #5 (Philadelphia-Germantown), a member of the Artisians, and a dedicated church member of the Mount Airy Presbyterian Church in Philadelphia, where he was a choir leader and deacon. He enjoyed bowling and golfing and was also a Cubs fan.
He was the beloved husband of Margaret E. West; loving father of Norman (Mary Ann) West Jr. of Batavia; devoted grandfather of Tom West of Connecticut and Karen (Colin) Kane of Rhode Island; devoted stepgrandfather of Paul West of Illinois; great-grandfather of John Patrick and Hope Kane of Rhode Island; and fond uncle of many nephews and nieces throughout the United States.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, William; daughter-in-law, Bernadette `Bunni'; several brothers; and one sister.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to the St. Luke Presbyterian Church Remodeling Fund, 3910 Highland Ave., Downers Grove, IL 60515.
Arrangements were made by YursPeterson Funeral Home, Batavia.

Ruth Maggio of Chicago
Memorial services for Ruth Maggio (nee Hellmuth), a lifelong resident of the Northwest Side of Chicago, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, at Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church, 7300 W. Division, River Forest.
Born April 23, 1923, in Chicago, she died Monday, July 12, 1999, at her home. Interment will be private.
Mrs. Maggio had been employed as an administrative assistant.
Survivors include her husband of 54 years, Peter Maggio; sons, Jim (Susan) Maggio of Woodstock, Thomas (Linda) Maggio of Des Plaines, and Joseph (Eileen) Maggioof Chicago; sisters, Eva (the late Frank) Svoboda of Bloomingdale and Jean (Anthony) Patti of Huntington Beach, Calif.; and five grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to Rainbow Hospice, 444 N. Northwest Highway, Park Ridge, IL 60068.
Arrangements were made by the Cremation Society of Illinois.

John Louis Adamec of Lake Zurich
Services and interment for John Louis Adamec will be private.
John was born April 25, 1950, in Lansing, Mich. and died Friday, July 16, 1999, at Alden of Long Grove after a long and courageous battle with melanoma. For the last years, John was cared for by his loyal and devoted friends and family.
Mr. Adamec worked for Hines Lumber Company in Crystal Lake before his illness, which began in 1993. He had a strong appreciation for the simple things in life; fishing, guitar playing and spending time with family and friends were the things John enjoyed most.
John spent his last days with the people he loved. Survivors include his children, whom meant the world to him, James Dean Adamec of Lake Zurich, Suzanne Ruth (Frank) Barbalece of Cary and Jessica Blue Adamec of Ingleside; and grandson, Jeremy Adamec. He was the youngest and only brother of Mary Ann (Gerald) Reichel of Arlington Heights and Jeanne (John) Kane of Lake Zurich. John was the dear son of Ruth and the late Louis Adamec. His close friends Christine Adamec and Dianne Velasquez will fondly remember him.
In lieu of flowers, memorialcontributions may be given to Hospice of Northeastern Illinois, 410 S. Hager Ave., Barrington, IL 60010.
Arrangements were made by Glueckert Funeral Home, Ltd., Arlington Heights.

John F. Baka
A chapel service for John F. Baka will be held at 12:30 p.m. Monday, at Salerno's Rosedale Chapels, 450 W. Lake St. (3/4 mile west of Bloomingdale/ Roselle Rd. ),Roselle. Interment will be in St. Michael the Archangel Cemetery, Palatine.
He was the beloved husband of Marie (nee Felton); loving son-in-law of Terese Felton; and dear brother of Riley (Pat), Jim (Barbara) and Paul Baka.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until noon Monday, at the funeral chapel.
Please omit flowers.
