MOUNT CARMEL - Lois Maurine Goodart, 87, died Sunday, Jan. 27, 2002, at Oakview Heights Nursing Home.
She retired as a head school cook.
Surviving are a daughter, Margaret E. Brookheart; two sisters, Ruth Brothers and Frances Wood; and three grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Short Funeral Home, with burial in Highland Memorial Cemetery.

Laurel Huggins
McLEANSBORO - Laurel S. Huggins, 81, died Monday, Jan. 28, 2002, at Hamilton Memorial Nursing Home.
He was a mail carrier.
Surviving are his wife, Roberta; two daughters, Debbie Swartz and Denita Reed; two sons, Steve and Greg; a stepson, Kenneth Staley; nine grandchildren; and four stepgrandchildren.

Curtis Melton
OMAHA - Curtis R. Melton, 71, died Sunday, Jan. 27, 2002, at the home of his daughter of cancer.
He was a salesman.
Surviving are four daughters, Cheri Fann, Linda Pierport, Janet Roland and Judy Bigers; a son, Ricky Holland; and 16 grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Cox & Son Funeral Home in Shawneetown, with burial in Odd Fellows Cemetery
in Clay, Ky.

John Murphy
ELDORADO - John R. Murphy, 90, died Sunday morning at Fountain View Nursing Home in Eldorado.
He was born May 20, 1911, to John Wes and Sophia Murphy.
He received a master of science degree in administration and supervision from Southern Illinois University before spending 38 years in education. He retired in 1971 after serving 22 years as teacher and principal at Muddy Grade School, 9 years as assistant Saline County superintendent of schools, 3 years as superintendent of the Eldorado Unit School System and 4 years as Dean of Southeastern Illinois College, where he was instrumental in establishing the school.
He was active in civil affairs as well serving on the Eldorado City Council, as commissioner of finance for the City of Eldorado, as mayor of Eldorado and as Saline County chairman of the American Red Cross. He was also active in the First Baptist Church for over 40 years as a former Sunday school teacher and superintendent.
He was a member of the York Rite Bodies, the Scottish Rite and the Shrine. He was a life member of the Masonic Lodge and received his 32nd degree. He was honored by the Supreme Council of the Scottish Rite by being granted an honorary 33rd degree. He served for two years as the grand master of the State of Illinois Masonic Lodge. In addition, he was selected chairman of the Grand Masters of North America.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Marilouise (Kelley); daughter and son-in-law, Donna and Bob Oliver of Lake Ozark, Mo.; daughter and son-in-law, Ann and Jack Milligan of Ridgway, Ill.; one sister, Margaret Murphy of Olive Branch, Miss.; five grandchildren, Beth Oliver and Cheryl Sweet, both of Union Grove, Wis., Jarrell Oliver of Bel Air, Md., Mike Milligan of Evansville and Amy Graber of Montgomery, Ind.; and 14 great-grandchildren.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Watson Funeral Home in Eldorado. Burial will be in Lindale Cemetery.
Visitation will be held Tuesday from 5 until 8 p.m. at the funeral home in Eldorado. Masonic rites will follow the visitation.
James Rice
ALBION - James A. Rice, 90, died Monday, Jan. 28, 2002, at Newton Rest Haven.
He had been a mechanic.
Surviving are a daughter, Billy Sue Poynter; two stepdaughters, Judy Daily and Betty Hallam; three sons, Jimmy Lee, Tim and Donald; three sisters, Ruth Bosecker, Ann Tucker and Louise Loudermilk; two brothers, Edgar and Harvey; and eight grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Nale's Funeral Home, with burial in Mount Zion Cemetery.

DAHLGREN - Lorene B. Schuster, 77, died Sunday, Jan. 27, 2002, at her home.

Jack Allen
HARRISBURG - Jack Allen, 16, died Monday, Jan. 28, 2002, in an all-terrain vehicle accident in Pope County near Eddyville.
He was a student.
Surviving are his father, Troy W. Allen; his mother, Julie "Jamie" Minix; a sister, Kristin Gervias; a brother, Travis; and grandparents.

CARMI - Nettie J. (Kingery) Downs, 93, died Monday, Jan. 28, 2002, at Wabash Christian Retirement Center.

He was a livestock farmer.

ELDORADO - Aaron Blake Lee Grisham, son of Doug and Renee Grisham, died Sunday, Jan. 27, 2002, at Carbondale Memorial Hospital. He was stillborn.

Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. today in Wolf Creek Cemetery. There will be no visitation at Colonial Terrace Funeral Home.

HUTSONVILLE - Maurice Byrl "Bud" Newlin, 70, died Monday, Jan. 28, 2002, at Crawford Memorial Hospital in Robinson.
He was a bookkeeper.
