Parnaby
DECATUR -- Richard W. "Dick" Parnaby, 72, of Rockford died early Saturday (April 21, 2001) in Rockford Memorial Hospital.
Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday in Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Rockford, with Pastor Jim Roberts officiating. Visitation will be one hour before services in the church. Olson Funeral Chapels, East Chapel, Rockford, is in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorials to the family for a memorial to be established at Heifer Project International and American Cancer Society.
Mr. Parnaby was born June 7, 1928, in Middlefield, Ohio, the son of Hubert and Hattie Stowe Parnaby. He had been a resident of Rockford since 1992, when he moved from Woodstock. He was a school psychologist for 40 years, retiring in 1995 from Harlem School District. He served in the
Army and was a member of American Psychological Association and a former member of NEA/IEA. He grew up on a farm and enjoyed gardening, music and reading about the abolition movement and the Old West. Recently he had been reading the Reader's Digest in German. Throughout his life, Dick maintained an active interest in the well-being of children and young people. He married Helen Tannus Dec. 23, 1960, in Decatur.
Surviving are his wife; sons, Mark (Zehra) Parnaby of Chicago; Jeffrey (Kerry) Parnaby of St. Paul, Minn.; brother, Leon "Bill" (Hope) Parnaby of Middlefield; several nieces and nephews; special pet, Felix.
He was preceded in death by his son, Matthew, one sister and three brothers.
Swanson
MACON -- Max E. Swanson, 89, Galesburg, father of Carol Ann Smith of Macon, died Thursday (April 19, 2001).
Services were Saturday. Arrangements by: Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. Burial: Wataga Cemetery. Memorials: Alzheimer's Disease Association or American Cancer Society.
Vest
DECATUR -- Leona Mae Vest, 73, of Decatur died Friday (April 20, 2001) in her home.
Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday in Dawson & Wikoff West Wood Street Funeral Home with visitation 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday. Burial will be in Macon County Memorial Park, Harristown.
Mrs. Vest was born March 20, 1928, in Decatur, the daughter of Chris Andrew and Lucy Basham Danner. She worked for General Electric for 17 years and Bridgestone/Firestone Inc. for 10 years in the lab. She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church and Eagles Lodge 507.
Surviving are her son, C. Edward Vest of Kankakee; sister, Darlene Danner of Decatur; niece, Teresa Sexton of Kansas, Ill.; cousin, Marge Smika of Decatur.
She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers and four sisters.

FORSYTH -- Samuel C. Zettler Sr., 65, Forsyth, employee of A.E. Staley Mfg. Co., died Saturday (April 21, 2001).

EFFINGHAM -- Lola R. Chappelear, 91, of Effingham died 12:02 a.m. Monday (April 23, 2001) in Sunbridge Care & Rehabilitation Center, Effingham.
Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday in United Methodist Church, Stewardson, with the Revs. Tim Rhodes and Andrew Procell, both of Stewardson, officiating. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and one hour before services in the church. Burial will be in Stewardson Cemetery. Swengel-O'Dell Funeral Home, Neoga, is in charge of arrangements. Memorials: World's Children, Winter Haven, Fla., or Alzheimer's Association, Southern Illinois Area Chapter.
Mrs. Chappelear was born June 1, 1909, in Shelby County, the daughter of William and Ella M. Spearman Kessler. She was a school teacher for 32 years, retiring after teaching at Mound School and in Stewardson, Neoga, Deland, Elk Grove and West Chester school districts. She was a member of United Methodist Church, Stewardson. She married Charles E. Chappelear June 7, 1931, in Stewardson. He preceded her in death March 23, 1994.
Surviving are her brother, Harold Kessler and wife Wilma of Stewardson; sister, Oma McCormick of Stewardson; nieces and nephews, Mrs. George (Betty Ann) Quast of Plainfield; Mrs. Larry (Patsy) Lenz of Strasburg; Mrs. Paul (Jennie Lou) Courson of Dieterich; Bill Swank and wife Margaret of Neoga; Jerry B. Kessler and wife Lynne of Effingham; John Swank and wife Glenda of Washington, Ill.; Ferd McCormick and wife Arlene of Stewardson; Debra Susan Tobey of Belleville; several great-nieces, great-nephews, great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband and one sister.

COWDEN -- Melvin "Pat" Riley, 81, of Cowden died 5:35 a.m. Sunday (April 22, 2001) in his home.
Graveside services will be 4 p.m. Wednesday in Mud Run Cemetery, near Cowden, with military rites by Herrick American Legion Post 839. There will be no visitation. Howe & Yockey Funeral Home, Shelbyville, is in charge of arrangements. Memorials: Lincolnland Hospice.
Mr. Riley was born Jan. 22, 1920, in Sebeka, Minn., the son of John and Olive Helen Connell Riley. He was an
Army veteran of World War II and was honorably discharged in 1943. He worked construction all his life and was a member of Central Labor Union 171 of Charleston, NRA and Herrick American Legion Post 839. He married Evelyn Marie Hooper March 21, 1946. She preceded him in death Feb. 3, 1993.
Surviving are his brother, Mike Riley of Washington; several nieces and nephews from surrounding areas, including special niece, Helen Blaine of Cowden.
He was preceded in death by his wife, parents and brother, Jack Riley, who was killed in World War II.
