Kettelkamp

NOKOMIS -- R. C. "Drum" Kettelkamp, 95, of Nokomis died 5:50 a.m. Tuesday (Jan. 28, 2003) in her home.

Services will be 1 p.m. Friday in First United Methodist Church, Nokomis. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday in Sutton Funeral Home, Nokomis, with 8 p.m. Masonic rites. Burial will be in Kettelkamp Cemetery, Nokomis.

Mr. Kettelkamp was born March 25, 1907, in Christian County, the son of Benjamin and Mary Brockman Kettelkamp. He retired from State of Illinois Public Health and owned and operated Drums Feed Store and Drums Motel and Service Station. He was a member of First United Methodist Church, AF & AM 456 Masonic, Ansar Shrine and Order of the Eastern Star. He married Marie Hall on Dec. 22, 1935.

Surviving are his wife; son, Gary Kettelkamp of Clifton Springs, N.Y.; daughter, Cheryl Jostes of Nokomis; brother, Paul "Pete" and wife Betty Kettelkamp; sisters, Clara Engleman and Marlon Kettelkamp; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Fred and Milton Kettelkamp; sisters, Edna Kettelkamp; Ada Best.

Dunn

LINCOLN -- Fay E. Dunn, 94, Lincoln, homemaker, died Monday (Jan. 27, 2003).

Services: 11 a.m. Monday, Harmony Cemetery, Beason. No visitation. Arrangements by: Holland & Barry Funeral Home, Lincoln.

Flynn

BETHANY -- Hazel C. Flynn, 83, of Greenville, S.C., formerly of Bethany, died 1 p.m. Saturday (Jan. 25, 2003) in National Health Care, Greenville.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday in McMullin-Young Funeral Home, Bethany, with visitation 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday. Burial will be in Marrowbone Township Cemetery, Bethany. Memorials: Greenville Zoo.

Hazel was born Sept. 8, 1919, in Bethany, the daughter of W.S. and Dessie Mayfield Clark. She graduated from Bethany High School and St. John's Nursing School, Springfield. She was in the Army Nurse Corps, serving as Lieutenant during World War II and during the Vietname War. She retired from the Veterans Administration Hospital after 30 years of service working in Amarillo, Texas, Kerrville, Texas and Dallas, Texas as assistant chief of nursing. She was a lifetime member of the Red Cross, receiving many awards for her dedication to her career and volunteer work.

Surviving are her son, Dan Flynn of Greer, S.C.; daughter, Kathleen Reynolds of Greenville; brothers, Wayne Clark of Decatur; Marvin Clark of Ramsey; Ivan Clark of Bethany; sisters, Helen Baird of Bethany; Ruth Craig of Sullivan; Ardith Capshaw of Decatur; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by three brothers and one sister.

Hardy

FLORA -- Helen B. Hardy, 89, Hanley Hills, Mo., formerly of Flora, died Wednesday (Jan. 29, 2003). Arrangements incomplete: Frank & Bright Funeral Home, Flora.

Kauffman

ARCOLA -- Joseph William Kauffman, 77, Arcola, retired farmer, died Tuesday (Jan. 28, 2003).

Services: 9 a.m. Friday, family residence, 360 E. CR. 400 N., Arcola. Visitation: anytime before services. Burial: Miller Cemetery, Arcola.

Nave

ROBINSON -- Ralph Eugene Nave, 87, Robinson, retired farmer, died Wednesday (Jan. 29, 2003).

Services: 11 a.m. Saturday, Pulliam Funeral Home, Robinson. Visitation: 5 to 8 p.m. Friday. Burial: Olive Branch Cemetery, Clark County, with military graveside rites.

Newby

HUMBOLDT -- Elizabeth Belle "Betty" Furry Newby, 74, of Humboldt went to be with her mother, Fern Elsie Annis, and the Lord Wednesday (Jan. 29, 2003) at the home of
her son, Kenneth Dean Newby, in Humboldt.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday in Edwards Funeral Home, Arcola, with visitation 5 to 8 p.m. Friday. Betty requested that donations be made to Lincolnland Hospice, American Cancer Society, American Heart Association, American Lung Association or Mount Zion General Baptist Church.

Betty was born Sept. 27, 1928, in Charleston, the daughter of Charles Edward and Fern Elsie Annie Furry. She is best described as a mother and family matriarch first, then as an artist, poet and author. While her six children were growing up, she kept busy during the day cooking meals, doing laundry, gardening and playing with her children, although at night, her literary talents emerged. Her love of family and friends is clearly displ
ayed in her five published books, "Open Line" (1979), "Life is Love and Love is Life" (1982), "Memories from Mother's Cream Pitcher" (1993), "Bits 'N' Pieces of Our Fifty Years" (1997) and "Howdy, Howdy, Howdy" (2002). Even after Betty was diagnosed with lung cancer, she continued to work on her final book, "Between You and Me," which will be finished by her family. This book was dedicated to the memory of Betty and will be a collection of stories from family and friends on their life's interactions with this wonderful woman. During her illness, Betty still managed to write to our 535 U.S. Congressional Representatives and Senators, urging them to fight to keep "In God We Trust" on our currency. She was a member of Mount Zion General Baptist Church, where she served as chorister and member of the choir. She was a firm believer in God and spread her spirituality to everyone she met. She married John Robert Newby on Aug. 3, 1947, in her home in Charleston.

Surviving are her husband, "Bob"; children, Kenneth Newby and wife Carol of Humboldt; Kathie Whitley and husband Michael of Mount Zion; Rex Newby and wife Martha of Huntington, W.Va.; John Newby of Boulder, Colo.; David Newby and wife Sarah of Mattoon; Be
cky Bleibaum and husband Kevin of Santa Rosa, Calif.; 16
grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; twin brother, William "Bill" Furry and wife Wanda and younger brother, Carl Furry and wife Evelyn, all of Charleston; sister, Elsie Carter and husband Charles of Beaver Dam, Wis.

She was preceded in death by one stillborn child and grandchildren, Rachel Alexa Newby and Ross David Newby.

She will be sorely missed by all who were privileged enough to know her.

Redman

ALTAMONT -- Martha Gertrude Redman, 92, Altamont, retired waitress, died Tuesday (Jan. 28, 2003).

Services: 11 a.m. Saturday, Gieseking Funeral Home, Altamont. Visitation: two hours before services. Graveside services: 1 p.m. Saturday, Cumberland Cemetery, Casey. Memorials: Lutheran Care Center.

Smith

ASSUMPTION -- Lucille Smith, 85, Assumption, died Wednesday (Jan. 29, 2003). Arrangements incomplete: Lockart & Sons Funeral Home, Shelbyville.

Stewardson

SHELBYVILLE -- M. Roberta Stewardson, 90, of Shelbyville died 8:37 a.m. Tuesday (Jan. 28, 2003) in Shelby Memorial Hospital.

Service will be 11 a.m. Saturday in First United Methodist Church of Shelbyville, with Dr. Bruce Owens officiating. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Friday in Howe & Yockey Funeral Home, Shelbyville. Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery, Shelbyville. Memorials: First United Methodist Church of Shelbyville.

Mrs. Stewardson was the fourth of six children born May 10, 1912, in Marshfield, Mo., the daughter of D.R. and Ora Jinnette Swing. After attending Southwest Missouri State Teachers College, she graduated from Washington University School of Nursing in St. Louis, Mo., in the Class of 1935. She worked as a nurse at Shelby Memorial Hospital until her retirement. She was a loyal and active member of First United Methodist Church of Shelbyville, in which she held several leadership positions through the years. She was also a member of Order of the Eastern Star Chapter 69 of Shelbyville and Shelby County Home Extension. She spent her entire life doing good for others. She married Dale B. Stewardson on Sept. 29, 1935.

Surviving are her husband; sons, James D. Stewardson and wife Mary Lou of Brighton, Colo.; Jerry L. Stewardson and wife Ardith of Adrian, Mich.; brother, D. R. Swing Jr. of Utica, N.Y.; grandchildren, James B. Stewardson of Roslindale, Mass.; Roberta Sue Stewardson of Lakewood, Colo.; Andrea Collins of Wyckoff, N.J.; Curtis Stewardson of Kansas City, Mo.; four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and four sisters.

Young

FLORA -- Jennifer E. Hilliard Young, 23, Hermitage, Tenn., formerly of Flora, died Sunday (Jan. 26, 2003).

Services: 1 p.m. Friday, First Christian Church, Flora. Visitation: 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Frank & Bright Funeral Home, Flora and one hour before services in the church. Burial: Cisne Cemetery. Memorials: Blue Point Free Will Baptist Church College Expense
Fund or Free Will Baptist College Jennifer Young Scholarship Fund.

Duell

DECATUR -- Sandy Duell, 91, of Decatur died 6:10 p.m. Jan. 23, 2003, in Fair Havens Christian Home.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday in First Lutheran Church. Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday in Brintlinger and Earl Funeral Homes. Burial will be in Bement Cemetery. Memorials: First Lutheran Church.

Mrs. Duell was born April 1, 1911, in Rushford, Minn., the daughter of Julius and Tilda Howard Sandsness. She graduated from Kohler Hospital School of Nursing, Rochester, Minn., in 1933. She worked for 30 years in the nursing profession, practicing in each city she lived, including University of Chicago Lying in Hospital and Dispensary. She was also affiliated with State of Minnesota Gillette Pediatric Hospital for Crippled Children.
She retired from nursing as a registered nurse at Firestone Tire & Rubber Co. She was an active member of First Lutheran Church, a member of Decatur Camera Club for many years and a volunteer in many nursing organizations, including the American Red Cross. She married G. Leslie Duell on May 11, 1937, in Tolono. He preceded her in death Dec. 2, 1978.

Surviving are her son, John Duell and wife Patricia of Colchester, Essex, Eng land; granddaughters, Rebecca Green, M.D., and husband Michael Green, M.D., of Southampton, England; Emily Duell of Colchester, England; great-granddaughter, Laura Green; several nieces, nephews and church friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; brothers, Marvel, Joseph, Benhard, Henry and Reuben; sister, Mabel Julianne Land.

Norton

DECATUR -- Hilda E. Mans Norton, 81, of Decatur died 3:55 p.m. Wednesday (Jan. 29, 2003) in her home.

Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday in Holy Family Catholic Church. Visitation will be 4 to 7 p.m. Friday in Brintlinger and Earl Funeral Homes, with 7 p.m. rosary prayer service. Burial will be in Mount Gilead Cemetery, with military rites con ducted by the Macon County Honor Guard. Memorials: Cancer Care Specialists of Decatur.

Mrs. Norton was born Feb. 19, 1921, in Red Wing, Kan., the daughter of Joseph and Anna Weber Mans. She was a lieutenant junior grade in the Navy Nurse Corps, having served in World War II. As a member of Holy Family Parish, she had worked as a volunteer in the preschool and had been a member of the Legion of Mary. She had also volunteered with Meals on Wheels and as a nurse with Red Cross. Her other memberships included the National Navy Nurse Corps Association and the St. Mary's Hospital Auxiliary. She loved children, bird watching, growing African violets and roses, sewing, playing bridge, traveling and music. She married William Richard "Dick" Norton on Dec. 27, 1945, in Salina, Kan. He preceded her in death.

Surviving are her children, Suzanne Moser and husband Paul of El Cajon, Calif.; Mary Ellen Hayes and husband Terry of Bridgeton, Mo.; Nancy Norton of St. Louis, Mo.; Robert Norton and wife Patricia of Decatur; Elizabeth Norton of Rock Hill, Mo.; grandchildren, Sean A. Hayes, R. Cody Hayes and Kelsey E. Hayes, all of Bridgeton; Alexander Weber Moser of El Cajon; brother-in-law, John E. "Jack" Norton of Portland, Ind.; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one grandchild, three brothers and two sisters.

Mrs. Norton will be remembered for her kindness and her wonderful sense of humor.

The family would like to thank St. John's Hospice, Dr. Ben Esparaz and Cancer Care Specialists and the Dominican Sisters of Holy Family Parish.

Flessner

OREANA -- Katharine Flessner, 83, of Champaign passed away 12:30 p.m. Sunday(Jan. 26, 2003) in ManorCare Health Services, Champaign.

Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Saturday in St. John Lutheran Church, 509 S. Mattis, Champaign. Arrangements by: Freese Funeral Homes, Sidney. Memorials: Lutheran Hour.

Mrs. Flessner was born April 10, 1919, in Louisville, Ky., the daughter of Louis O. and Edna Suhr Harms. She was a member of St. John Lutheran Church. She retired from University of Illinois Gaseous Electronics Department. She was a volunteer for Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) and she worked for Stevick Center in Champaign. She was past president of Golden Kiwanis, a representative for Champaign County on the corporate board on East Central Illinois area agency on aging and was former chairwoman on the board's advisory committee. She married Martin J. F. Flessner on Jan. 27, 1950, in Cleveland, Ohio. He preceded her in death Feb. 11, 1972.

Surviving are her daughters, Ellen Ferguson of Oreana; Sylvia Flessner of New London, Iowa; Judith Kopmann of St. Joseph; nine grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; brother, Elvin Harms of Edwardsville.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, one sister and one granddaughter.

Kistenfeger

MOUNT ZION -- Walter A. Kistenfeger Jr., 50, Downers Grove, brother Bob of Mount Zion, died Wednesday (Jan. 29, 2003).

Services: 3 p.m. Sunday, St. Columba Church, Ottawa. Visitation: 2 to 6 p.m. Saturday, Katherine Legge Memorial Lodge, Hinsdale. Arrangements by: Mueller Funeral Home, Ottawa. Memorials: Elementary District 181 Foundation, Walter A. Kistenfeger Memorial.

Survivors: wife, Kathy; father, Walter Kistenfeger, Ottawa; mother, Ida McDonald, Moweaqua; son, Colby Kistenfeger, Moweaqua; daughters, Courtney and Cami Kistenfeger, Moweaqua; brothers, Gene, Dave and Gary, Ottawa; Bob, Mount Zion; Tom Blackmon; sisters, Mary Ksiazkiewicz, Utica; Sandy Nagel, Ottawa. Preceded by: grandparents.
