DECATUR -- Gladys Ione Stewart, 83, of LaPlace, La., formerly of Decatur, died Tuesday (Jan. 28, 2003) in LaPlace.

Gladys was born March 23, 1919, in Bismark, N.D., the daughter of Ed and Sadie Mitchell DeVine. She was a lifetime member of the Methodist Church, 25-year member of LaBusy Bees, mixed bowling league member, manager of Warren Hills High School cafeteria in Washington, N.J., Boy Scout Den Leader and Sunday school teacher. She married Ralph L. Stewart on Aug. 22, 1948, in Decatur.
Surviving are her husband; son, Curtis Stewart of Hackettstown, N.J.; brothers, Lyle N. (Bonnie) DeVine and Donald T. (Dorothy) DeVine, all of California; Eddie W. (Esther) DeVine and Earl T. (Dorothy) DeVine, all of Minnesota; sister, Leona (Clive) of Oregon; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, one son and one brother.

ST. ELMO -- Jacob Benjamin Brewbaker, 90, of St. Elmo died 11:40 p.m. Thursday (Jan. 30, 2003) in his home.
Services will be 1 p.m. Monday in Kull Funeral Home, St. Elmo, with visitation 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday. Burial will be in Old Loogootee Cemetery. Memorials: donor's choice.
Mr. Brewbaker was born June 4, 1912, in Mound Township, near Altamont in Effingham County, the son of William Harley and Mary Mearl Parker Brewbaker. He was the oldest son of 10 brothers and sisters. He was a farmer all of his life. He married Nora Lucille Calvert in 1943, in St. Elmo. She preceded him in death April 2, 1965.
Surviving are his daughters, Joyce (Gary) Drees of Beecher City; Janet Stahulak of Decatur; brother, Jay (Bonnie) Brewbaker of Petal, Miss.; sisters, Helen Ragel of Vandalia; Rachel (Delbert) Jennings of Riverton, Wyo.; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and stepgrandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; sons, Donald Dean Brewbaker and Charles William Brewbaker; brothers, John William and wife Lodema Brewbaker and James and Joseph Brewbaker; son-in-law, James Stahulak; brother-in-law, Clyde Ragel; two infant brothers and one infant sister.
Calvin

Services were Tuesday in Darnestown Presbyterian Church, Gaithersburg, Md. Memorial services will be held at a later date in Sullivan. Barber Funeral Home, Laytonsville, Md., is in charge of arrangements. Mr. Calvin was a native of Mount Olive and served in the Marine Corps in the Pacific during World War II. He graduated from Eastern Illinois University in 1954, coached football and taught drivers education at high schools in Nokomis and Sullivan and authored a widely used drivers education textbook. He was inducted into the Illinois High School Football Coaches Hall of Fame in 1990. He moved to Washington in 1972 to manage highway safety programs for the Highway Users Federation, now the American Highway Users Alliance. Working through the affiliated Automotive Safety Foundation (now the Roadway Safety Foundation), he directed until his retirement in 1996 several traffic safety education programs to reduce the number of highway fatalities and injuries.
In 1989, on behalf of the Professional Truck Driver Institute of America, he wrote two commercial truck driver licensing guides to help bus and truck drivers pass the new test mandated by the Commercial Motor Vehicle Safety Act of 1986. The guides were rated "best in the field" by Heavy Duty Trucking magazine. He also drafted textbooks, study books and videotapes for bus and truck drivers taking the commercial drivers license tests. Between 1991 and 1999, he produced 33 books and audios related to commercial driver licensing. He also worked with the American Association of Retired Persons, Federal Highway Administration and National Highway Traffic Safety Administration on programs to improve safety for older drivers and pedestrians.
Surviving are his wife of 54 years, June Allen Calvin; sons, Patrick and Michael of Gaithersburg; daughter, Nancy of Westminster, Md.; grandchildren, Bobby, Katie and Allie; brothers, Donald of Manhasset, N.Y.; Kenny of Mount Olive.
He was preceded in death by his son, Mark, in 1995.

SHELBYVILLE -- Mabel Grace Camfield, 89, of Shelbyville, formerly of Cowden, died 11:15 p.m. Thursday (Jan. 30, 2003) in Sheryl's Place, Shelbyville.
Services will be 10 a.m. Monday in Howe & Yockey Funeral Home, Shelbyville, with Brother Donald Ames officiating. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday. Burial will be in Mound Cemetery, Cowden. Memorials: Sheryl's Place.
Mrs. Camfield was born Feb. 2, 1913, in Moultrie County, the daughter of Corwin Clay and Viola Elsie Bruns Smith. She was a secretary for A.E. Staley Mfg. Co. for 17 years and member of Holliday Church of Christ. She married Robert L. Camfield on Sept. 4, 1964.
Surviving are her husband; son, Mark Camfield and wife Rhonda of Granger, Ind.; daughters, Yvonne Stirrett and husband Roger and Dianne Atteberry and husband Jim, all of Shelbyville; brother, Walter Clay Smith and wife Cora of Springfield; sisters, Rella Diamond Risoli and husband John of Blue Ridge, Texas; June Swipies of Shelbyville; grandchildren, Brent Stirrett and wife Carla; Jeff Stirrett and wife Lisa; Brian Stirrett; David Camfield; Tia Whitford and husband Mark; Craig Atteberry and wife Tonya; Mark Atteberry; nine great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Kenneth Smith.

David was born Dec. 4, 1955, the son of Charles Evans Sr. and Luella Rape Evans. He attended high school in Decatur, resided a few years in Assumption and moved to St. Elmo in 1995 with his parents.
Surviving are his parents of Loogootee; brother, Charles S. Evans Jr. of St. James; sister, Mrs. Greg (Mary Lou) Colon of Tobaccoville, N.C.; nieces, Angela (Tom) Wilhelm of Lovington; Ashley Evans of St. James; Tosha Evans of Vandalia; great-nephews, Brett and Nick Wilhelm of Lovington; uncle, James (Caroline) Evans of Decatur; aunts, Mrs. Marshall (Bonnie) Bowlby of Decatur; Virgie Evans of Many, La.; several cousins.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents and uncle, George Evans.
