DECATUR -- Leland F. Stevens, 80, of Decatur died 10:05 a.m. Sunday (Feb. 2, 2003) in St. Mary's Hospital.
Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday in Edgar Cemetery, Paris, with military rites by American Legion of Paris. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday in Dawson & Wikoff West Wood Street Funeral Home. Memorials: American Heart Association or Diabetes. Association.
Mr. Stevens was born May 29, 1922, in Bement, the son of Nathan E. and Clella Clark Pryde Stevens. He worked for Decatur public schools as a custodian and was president and business agent of his local union. He served in the
Army during World War II. He was in ordnance and stationed in New Caledonia. He was a lifetime member of the VFW Decatur Post 99. He married Betty Lou Mullins on Oct. 1, 1942, in New London, Mo.
Surviving are his wife; children, Thomas L. Stevens and wife Kay of Denver, Colo.; Patricia Ann Stevens Elliott and husband Larry of Bono, Ark.; James L. Stevens of Mount Zion and friend Dayna Gilman of Warrensburg; William L. Stevens of Decatur; grandchildren, James R. Stevens of Mount Zion; Aaron and Darcy Dees and Roy N. Stevens, all of Denver; Barton and Amy Elliot, both of Cape Girardeau, Mo.; and Chris and Carrie Cook, both of Bono; great-grandchildren, Breana, Heather and Jeremy Elliott, Hannah and Elijah Cook and Kayleigh Dees.
He was preceded in death by his parents and granddaughter, Stacy Ann Elliot.
He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

DECATUR -- Mildred Lucille Utsler, 87, of Decatur died 11:20 a.m. Monday (Feb. 3, 2003) in Decatur Memorial Hospital.
Services will be 2 p.m. Thursday in Tabernacle Baptist Church with Dr. Patrick Pajak officiating. Visitation will be one hour before services. Burial will be in Fairlawn Cemetery. Graceland/Fairlawn Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Memorials: Tabernacle Baptist Church.
Mildred was born Nov. 16, 1915, in Bernie, Mo., the daughter of Issac Robert and Lucy Higginbottom Bennett. She worked for Decatur Garment Co. for several years and was a homemaker. She was a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church. She married Sylvan Utsler on Feb. 12, 1940, in Dexter, Mo.
Surviving are her husband; son, Aaron Utsler and wife Peggy of Dupure, Mont.; daughter, Lucy McGinnis and husband Dwain of Champaign; brothers, James C. Bennett of Dexter; George Bennett of California; Donald Bennett of Elmhurst; sister, Dortha
Burkhart of St. Louis, Mo.; nine grandchildren; several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers and three sisters.
Welker
DECATUR -- Dennis Welker, 48, of Decatur died 12:48 p.m. Friday (Jan. 31, 2003) in Decatur Memorial Hospital.
Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday in Macon County Memorial Park, Harristown, with military rites by the Macon County Honor Guard. Dawson & Wikoff West Wood Street Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Memorials: Catholic Charity.
Mr. Welker was born March 9, 1954, in Decatur, the son of Larry and Norma Jean Armstrong Welker. He was a draftsman for Borg-Warner Corp. and served in the Air Force.
Surviving are his father; sister, Rita Welker; sons, Shanon Welker and Michael Welker; daughters, Sherria Turnbo, Paula Welker, Melissa Welker and Nicole Welker; three nieces and one nephew; grandchildren, Brianna Casias, Violet Turnbo and Jasmine Turnbo.
He was preceded in death by his mother; sister, Pamela; and daughter, Cynthia.
The family wishes to extend their gratitude to the doctors and nurses of the Decatur Memorial Hospital ICU for all their care and support.

BETHANY -- Darrell J. Bond, 73, of Bethany died 3:55 p.m. Monday (Feb. 3, 2003) in St. Mary's Hospital, Decatur.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday in McMullin-Young Funeral Home, Bethany, with the Rev. Charles Witte officiating. Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday with 7 p.m. Masonic rites. Burial will be in Marrowbone Township Cemetery, Bethany. Memorials: First Christian Church, Bethany.
Darrell was born Aug. 18, 1929, in Edwards County, the son of C. Everett and Kathryn Mae Hallem Bond. He was retired from CornBelt F.S. and owner of Bonds Herb Farm, Bethany. He was a member of First Christian Church, Scottish Rite Valley of Danville, Hermitage Masonic Lodge 356, Ansar Shrine, Springfield and Bethany American Legion. He married Shirley A. Poynter on Dec. 3, 1954, in Mount Carmel.
Surviving are his wife; sons, Darrell J. Bond Jr. and wife Jessie of Marseilles; Gregory Bond and wife Patti of Clive, Iowa; daughters, Janice K. Brophy and husband Harvey of Perrinton, Mich.; Dana J. Maisel and husband Kim of Bethany; brother, Vern Bond
of Mount Vernon; Don Bond of Scottsburg, Ind.; sister, Joyce Dalton of Fairfield; special nephew, Charles Caldwell and wife Rochelle of Auburn; 12 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren.

Bush
TAYLORVILLE -- Phyllis V. Bush, 81, of Taylorville died 6:20 a.m. Tuesday (Feb. 4, 2003) in Meadow Manor Nursing Home, Taylorville.
Memorial services will be 10 a.m. Monday in Sutton Memorial Home Chapel, Taylorville. No visitation. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery, Decatur.
Mrs. Bush was born Jan. 25, 1922, in Sioux City, Iowa, the daughter of Jay and Eva Baldwin Homrighouse. She was a retired beautician after 36 years. She was a member of First Baptist Church, Taylorville and served as mission treasurer for 16 years.
She married Max Schakel on Dec. 24, 1939, in Pella, Iowa. He preceded her in death. She later married Willard "Bill" Bush on March 17, 1972, in Decatur. He preceded her in death.
Surviving are her son, Douglas and wife Sharon Schakel of Grand Junction, Colo.; daughter, Merideth and husband George Roland of Phoenix, Ariz.; stepsons, Richard Bush and Michael Bush, both of Decatur; stepdaughter, Tonya Bush of Honolulu, Hawaii; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; brother, Jay Homrighouse Jr. of Salt Lake City, Utah; dear friends, Helen Dauwistra and family of Mesa, Ariz.; Karen Schlueter and Lori Trelz, both of Taylorville.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands, aunts, uncles, cousins and sister-in-law.

CLINTON -- Frances Catherine Grubbs, 91, of Clinton died 5:58 p.m. Monday (Feb. 3, 2003) in Crestview Health Care Center, Clinton.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday in Maroa Bible Church, with Dr. Richard Grubbs officiating. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday in Calvert Funeral Home, Maroa. Burial will be in Fairlawn Cemetery, Decatur. Memorials: Radio Bible Class, Maroa Bible Church or St. John's Hospice.
Mrs. Grubbs was born June 26, 1911, in Maroa, the daughter of Harry B. Roney and Rachael Parker. She was affiliated with Pekin Bible Church. She married the Rev. Cleo O. Grubbs on July 29, 1933, in Decatur. He preceded her in death Jan. 28, 1979.
Surviving are her children, Millicent Young of Linton, Ind.; Harriet Wilbur of Simla, Colo.; Carlone Alexander of Clinton; Dr. Richard Grubbs of Lubbock, Texas; 12 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; son, Roger Lee; one great-grandchild; one sister.

MATTOON -- Nancy Gillespie Zavarella, 69, of Normal, formerly of Mattoon, died 7:45 p.m. Monday (Feb. 3, 2003) in ManorCare Health Services, Normal.
Services will be 2 p.m. Thursday in Kull Funeral Home, St. Elmo, with the Rev. James Wheeler of First United Methodist Church, St. Elmo, officiating. Visitation will be one hour before services. Nancy Rose Gillespie Zavarella was born July 28, 1933, in St. Elmo, the daughter of Samuel W. Gillespie and Margaret Phillips Gillespie. She graduated as valedictorian of the St. Elmo Community High School Class of 1951. She attended Northwestern University in Evanston and the University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana. She was employed for several years as a secretary for Regional Office of Education in DuPage County and the School Association for Special Education in Maywood. She was also the welcome wagon hostess in Carol Stream. She retired in 1969. She was a member of Daughters of the American Revolution in the Glen Ellyn Mattoon and Bloomington chapters. She was an officer in each DAR chapter, including the chairwoman of the Student Essay Contest and DAR Good Citizen Award, chapter vice-regent and chapter regent. The DuPage Italian American Civic Committee named her Woman of the Year in 1982-1983. She will be remember as a devoted wife, loving mother and grandmother and a dear friend to all who knew her. She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Normal and Mattoon, Mercy and Mary Circles of United Methodist Women and Champion and Yokefellows Sunday School Classes. She married Victor Zavarella on Jan. 8, 1955, in First United Methodist Church of Franklin Park.
Surviving are her husband; son, Andrew P. and wife Gloria Zavarella of Mattoon; daughter, Mary Z. and husband Michael D. Walker of Normal; brother, Samuel M. Gillespie of Sattler/Canyon Lake, Texas; grandsons, Domenic and Derrick
Zavarella; granddaughters, Gia and Jennifer Walker.
She was preceded in death by her parents and brother, John Phillips Gillespie.
