White
Grace White, formerly of Effingham, dies at 100
EFFINGHAM -- Grace Viola White, 100, of Terre Haute, Ind., formerly of Effingham, died 11:40 p.m. Sunday (Feb. 9, 2003) in the home of her daughter.
Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday in Johnson Funeral Home, Effingham, with visitation 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday. Burial will be in Arborcrest Memorial Park, Effingham. Memorial: donor's choice.
Mrs. White was born April 17, 1902, in Assumption, the daughter of O.B. and Minnie Arnold Slifer. She worked at the Illinois Glove Factory until her retirement July 1, 1967. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Effingham. She married Virgil R. White from Jackson Township, Effingham County, in 1922. He preceded her in death March 17, 1981.
Surviving are her son, Forest Dale White of Byonne, N.J.; daughter, Eva Ruth and husband Hollis L. White of Terre Haute; brother, Noble E. Slifer and wife Jean of Effingham; sisters, Catherine Ashbaugh of Altamont; Mayme Ruth Gaines of Mattoon; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one son, three sisters and three brothers.
Bass
BLUE MOUND -- Ruth Olive Bass, 73, formerly of Clinton, N.C., died Thursday (Feb. 6, 2003) in her home.
Graveside services will be 2:30 p.m. Sunday in Hopewell Methodist Cemetery, Newton Grove, N.C., with the Rev. Roger Hill officiating, Pastor of Oak Grove Baptist Church. Graceland/Fairlawn Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Ruth was born Oct. 28, 1929, in Harnett County, N.C., the daughter of Marvin and Emma House Elmore. She was known for her many talents as a seamstress and caterer, but most of all, a loving mother. She will be deeply missed.
Surviving are her son, James Haywood Bass and wife Mary of Faison, N.C.; daughter, Martha Ann Bass Mann and husband Ken of Boody; sister, Maggie West and husband Henry of Fayetteville, N.C.; grandchildren, Tracie Carlton of Blue Mound; Michael Mann of Boody; Jim and Allen Bass, both of North Carolina; great-grandchild, Olivia Carlton of Blue Mound.
She was preceded in death by her parents and sister, Christine E. Bland.
The family wishes to express their gratitude to Dr. M. Velasco and the staff of Decatur Cancer Care Specialists, Decatur Memorial Hospital fifth floor nursing staff, Decatur Memorial Hospital nurses and DMH Home Health & Hospice Services.

DECATUR -- James Lenard Evans, 77, of Decatur passed away 2:52 a.m. Monday (Feb. 10, 2003) after a long battle with cancer in his home.
Services will be 11 a.m. Friday in Dawson & Wikoff Colonial Chapel North with visitation 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery

Mr. Evans was born Sept. 23, 1925, in St. Elmo, the son of George and Lovie Ann Doty Evans. He retired from Caterpillar Inc. in 1988, after 23 1/2 years as a material handler. He was a member of the Eagles and Isaac Walton League. He was an avid fisherman and a teller of tall tales. He was a World War II Navy veteran. He married Donna M. Grubaugh in 1947. He married Caroline "Gretchen" Wagner Willis on Dec. 31, 1977.
Surviving are his wife, Caroline; son, Gary Michael Evans of Decatur; daughters, Cathy Ann Parsons and husband Kermit of Danville; Judith M. Pieper of Decatur; Nancy Sue Eller and husband Don of Urbana; Barbara Ellen Brown of Decatur; Sandra Kay Riewski and husband William of Argenta; stepdaughters, Nancy Jo Hall of Decatur; Judith Ann Marrin and husband Joseph of Springfield; Cindy Lee David and husband Woodrow of Decatur; Mindy Lou Collins and husband Mark of Warrensburg; brother, Charles Stanley Evans and wife Luella of Loogootee; sister, Bonnie Bowlby and husband Marshall of Decatur; sister-in-law, Virgie Evans of Many, La.; grandchildren, Renee, Michelle, Pamela, Kermie, Jeremy, Lynn, Monica, Brandy, Megan, Holly, Alex, Katelyn, James and Jamie; special stepgrandson, Patrick Lee Willis; stepgrandchildren, Chelsea, Hannah, Nicole, Joey, Wendy, Ashley, Amber, Jeffery, Elisha, Kelsey and Kennedy; 16 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one son, two daughters, one stepdaughter and four brothers.

DECATUR -- Ronald E. Gillibrand, 52, of Decatur entered into eternal life Saturday (Feb. 8, 2003) in his home.

Ron was born Jan. 9, 1951, in Decatur, the son of Wilburn E. and Myreta Jennings Gillibrand. He was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, Decatur Chordsmen Barbershop Singers and Service Employee Union 73. Ron was employed as a locksmith for the Decatur public schools for 18 years. He proudly served our country in the Navy on the USS Constellation. Ron married Cheryl A. Riedel on Oct. 29, 1977, in Decatur.
Surviving are his wife; son, Todd (fiancee, Heather) Gillibrand of Champaign; stepmother, Betty L. Gillibrand of Decatur; brother, Thomas B. Gillibrand; sister-in-law, Sharon (Michael) Taylor of Decatur; cousin, Robert (Donna) Burdick of Charlotte, N.C.; four nieces; one nephew; many, many friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents.

DECATUR -- Dorothy E. Kinney, 83, of Decatur died 5:30 a.m. Tuesday (Feb. 11, 2003) in Decatur Memorial Hospital.

Mrs. Kinney was born Nov. 28, 1919, in LeRoy, the daughter of Harry and Myrtle Gothrup Bridgmon. She married Joseph E. Kinney on June 26, 1948, in Kentucky. He passed away in August 1992.
Surviving are her daughter, Christina (Steve) Marshall of Decatur; son, Michael (Robin) Kinney of Bloomington; grandchildren, Ben, Brandi, Brian, Amanda, Ryan, Sarah, Trace and Savanah; brother, Loyal Forrest "Pete" Bridgmon of Decatur.

DECATUR -- Donald McKay Lindsay, 80, formerly of Decatur, died Feb. 5, 2003, in Vero Beach, Fla.

Mr. Lindsay was born Aug. 25, 1922, in Decatur, the son of Marjorie McKay Lindsay and Frank M. Lindsay Sr. He became a permanent resident of Vero Beach in 1990, following a long career in the media business in Champaign and Decatur. He attended Deerfield Academy in Deerfield, Mass., where he was captain of the varsity basketball team. He produced and published the 50th Reunion Yearbook titled "It Was A Very Good Year" Class of 1940. He graduated from Williams College, Williamstown, Mass., in 1944, where he participated in varsity Lacrosse, captained the basketball team, was president of Zeta Psi fraternity, president of the inter fraternity council and a member of the Gargoyle Honorary Society. He remained an active fund-raiser and devoted alumnus to both Deerfield and Williams throughout his life.
Mr. Lindsay's lifelong love of sports and the game of golf started as a young boy and continued throughout his life. At one time, he was club golf champion in both Decatur and Champaign. He was governor of American Seniors Golf Association and a member of American Seniors International Team in 1991. He was a member of the three score and ten club. In Vero Beach, he played at the John's Island Club and Bent Pine Country Club.
He served as Lieutenant (J.G.) in the Navy and was assigned to the Destroyer USS Foote in Okinawa, Japan. Prior to retirement, he worked in the broadcasting and newspaper industry as a sports reporter for the Decatur Herald & Review, a sports announcer, general manager for the Champaign-Urbana Courier Newspaper and director of advertising/vice president of newspaper operations for Lindsay-Schaub Newspapers Inc. He was director of the Jersey Herald, WGEM-TV-AM-FM and was currently chairman of the Board of Quincy Newspapers Inc., Quincy. He married Helen Keating in 1950. She preceded him in death in 1988. He married Lou Ann Davis in 1989.
Surviving are his wife; children, Mary Lisa Whitworth of Houston, Texas; Michael Keating Lindsay of Bloomington, Ind.; Martin Kay Lindsay and wife Heidi of Arlington Heights; Dee Scott Davis of Vero Beach; Shelley Davis of Denver, Colo.; grandchildren, Bryan Patrick Whitworth, Meghan McKay Whitworth, Caroline Keating Lindsay, Jack Walker Lindsay and William McKay Lindsay; sister, Shirley Jean Lindsay, Indian Lakes Estates, Fla.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Helen Lindsay; sister, Marjorie Lindsay; brother, F. Merrill Lindsay Jr.; and granddaughter, Jennifer Whitworth.
