Dunn
DECATUR -- Violet Evis Dunn, 89, of Decatur, formerly of Black Canyon City, Ariz., died 9:12 p.m. Tuesday (Feb. 11, 2003) in Decatur Memorial Hospital.
Services will be 1 p.m. Thursday in Brintlinger and Earl Funeral Homes with visitation one hour before services. Burial will be in Macon County Memorial Park, Harristown. Memorials: Decatur Chapter 111 Order of the Eastern Star.
Violet was born Jan. 2, 1914, in Mount Vernon, the daughter of Charles F. and Edna Olive Potter Barding. She was a member of Black Canyon City Community Church and Decatur Chapter 111 Order of the Eastern Star. She married Cecil Gay Dunn on Sept. 9, 1933. He preceded her in death July 1, 1986.
Surviving are several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, three daughters, two brothers and three sisters.
Eckes
DECATUR -- Ruth Alice Eckes, 78, of Decatur died 8:43 a.m. Tuesday (Feb. 11, 2003) in her daughter's home in Taylorville.
Private family services were held. Graceland/Fairlawn Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Ruth was born Oct. 3, 1924, in Wisconsin Rapids, Wis., the daughter of Roy and Ruth Klein Sweet. She was an underwriter for Federal Kemper Insurance and later a homemaker. She married Gene Eckes on July 4, 1942, in Wisconsin Rapids. He preceded her in death Sept. 2, 2002.
Surviving are her son, Thomas Eckes and wife Carol of Decatur; daughters, Doris Moomey and husband Virgil of Taylorville; Pamela Terneus and husband Steven of Sarasota, Fla.; sisters, Marion Heltsley of Wisconsin Rapids; Lois Stagner of Auburn, Calif.; Helen Stolber of Geneseo, N.Y.; 11 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and two sisters.

DECATUR -- Frank Thomalla Jr., 75, of Marshfield, Wis., died 10:25 p.m. Tuesday (Feb. 11, 2003) in St. John's Hospital Emergency Room, Marshfield.
Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday in Christ Lutheran Church, Marshfield, with the Rev. Mark A Krueger, officiating. Visitation will be 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday in Rembs/ Kundinger Funeral Home, Marshfield, and one hour before services in the church. Burial will be in Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery, Marshfield. Mary Castner will be the organist and William A. Allen will be the vocalist. Pallbearers will be Jason, Nikolas, Karl and Ryan Thomalla, Alex Heath, Kelly Gregory and Alex Blood. In lieu of flowers, memorials: Marshfield Area Habitat for Humanity.
Frank was born Sept. 8, 1927, in Decatur. He graduated from Decatur High School. He served in the Navy on board the USS Baltimore in the South Pacific from June 20, 1945, until his honorable discharge July 13, 1946. After his military service, he became employed as an art director for Arrick Engraving in Decatur for six years. He then opened his own commercial art studio in Decatur for 20 years. Then until his retirement in September 1989, he was the graphic arts designer for Sangamon State University in Springfield. They moved to Marshfield after retirement to be closer to family. He enjoyed wildlife art, calligraphy and golfing 
. He designed the logo for Christ Lutheran Church. He married Thelma L. O'Dell on Sept. 1, 1945, in Decatur.
Surviving are his wife; children, Frank "Tom" Thomalla of Louisiana, Mo.; Christopher (Dale) Thomalla of Hermantown, Minn.; J. Vincent (Gail) Thomalla of Marshfield; Anthony (Giselle) Thomalla of Porter, Ind.; sister, Anni (Harold) Baker of Decatur; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents.

Darel was born July 16, 1921, in Decatur, the son of Howard F. and Dora Floyd Jones. He was a machinist for Mueller Co. for many years. He later owned and operated Haven Motel and Coffee Shop in Springfield for 10 years. He later was a forklift operator for Caterpillar Inc. and was an
Army veteran, serving in World War II. He married Margaret B. Reitzel on Sept. 20, 1941. She preceded him in death Nov. 10, 1993.
Surviving are his sons, Rodney Darel Jones and wife Pat of LaGrange, Ga.; Gary Jones and wife Patty of Decatur; daughters, Linda Harrington and husband Paul of White Heath; Jerri Hall and husband Jim of Clearwater, Fla.; Darlene Willhite of Springfield; brother, Bob Jones and wife Ann of Decatur; sisters, Bett Hoffman and Norma Jean Keifling, both of Decatur; 16 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, one brother and one sister.
Kowalsky
DECATUR -- Mabel Esther Kowalsky, 94, of Decatur passed away 1:15 p.m. Tuesday (Feb. 11, 2003) in Imboden Creek Living Center.
Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Friday in Fairlawn Cemetery
with Pastor James Ash officiating. There will be no visitation. Graceland/Fairlawn Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Memorials: Redwoods League.
Miss Kowalsky was born Dec. 10, 1908, in Decatur, the daughter of August and Ellretta Coughlan Kowalsky. She graduated from Decatur High School, Millikin University and Case Western in Ohio. She was a librarian for the Carnegie Library in Decatur, a library in Cleveland, Ohio, and for a short time, she was a librarian for the Decatur School District, serving in MacArthur High School. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Decatur for more than 79 years and a member of Arbor Society, Sierra Club, Historical Society and SHIP.
Surviving are her cousin, Ruth Shasteen of Decatur; Ruth's sons, including Ruth's deceased son's wife, Mrs. Donald J. (Joyce) Ray and family of Chicago; Dr. John D. Ray and wife Linda and family of Boulder, Colo.; Jerry L. Ray and wife Monica and family of Mount Zion; good friend and roommate, Vivian Barns; personal friend, Jack Newberry.
She was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Earl Henry Kowalsky.

DECATUR -- Donald McKay Lindsay, 80, formerly of Decatur, died Feb. 5, 2003, in Vero Beach, Fla.

Mr. Lindsay was born Aug. 25, 1922, in Decatur, the son of Marjorie McKay Lindsay and Frank M. Lindsay Sr. He became a permanent resident of Vero Beach in 1990, following a long career in the media business in Champaign and Decatur. He attended Deerfield Academy in Deerfield, Mass., where he was captain of the varsity basketball team. He produced and published the 50th Reunion Yearbook titled "It Was A Very Good Year" Class of 1940. He graduated from Williams College, Williamstown, Mass., in 1944, where he participated in varsity lacrosse, captained the basketball team, was president of Zeta Psi fraternity, president of the inter-fraternity council and a member of the Gargoyle Honorary Society. He remained an active fund-raiser and devoted alumnus to both Deerfield and Williams throughout his life.
Mr. Lindsay's lifelong love of sports and the game of golf started as a young boy and continued throughout his life. At one time, he was club golf champion in both Decatur and Champaign. He was governor of American Seniors Golf Association and a member of American Seniors International Team in 1991. He was a member of the three score and ten club. In Vero Beach, he played at the John's Island Club and Bent Pine Country Club.
He served as Lieutenant (J.G.) in the Navy and was assigned to the Destroyer USS Foote in Okinawa, Japan. Prior to retirement, he worked in the broadcasting and newspaper industry as a sports reporter for the Decatur Herald & Review, a sports announcer, general manager for the Champaign-Urbana Courier newspaper and director of advertising/vice president of newspaper operations for Lindsay-Schaub Newspapers Inc. He was director of the Jersey Herald, WGEM-TV-AM-FM and was currently chairman of the Board of Quincy Newspapers Inc., Quincy. He married Helen Keating in 1950. She preceded him in death in 1988. He married Lou Ann Davis in 1989.
Surviving are his wife; children, Mary Lisa Whitworth of Houston, Texas; Michael Keating Lindsay of Bloomington, Ind.; Martin Kay Lindsay and wife Heidi of Arlington Heights; Dee Scott Davis of Vero Beach; Shelley Davis of Denver, Colo.; grandchildren, Bryan Patrick Whitworth, Meghan McKay Whitworth, Caroline Keating Lindsay, Jack Walker Lindsay and William McKay Lindsay; sister, Shirley Jean Lindsay, Indian Lakes Estates, Fla.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Helen Lindsay; sister, Marjorie Lindsay; brother, F. Merrill Lindsay Jr.; and granddaughter, Jennifer Whitworth.

Helen was born in Blue Mound, the daughter of John Molloy and Lena Catherwood Molloy Frailey. She was a member of First United Methodist Church. She married Donald Tozer on June 6, 1926, in Maroa. He preceded her in death in October 1978.
Surviving are her daughter, Betty Lou "Penny" Springer-Miller and husband Leo Miller of Virden; sisters, Mary Koberlein of St. Elmo; Marta Kelley of Decatur; three grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; many great-nieces and great-nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and brother, Earl Molloy.
