Mary was born July 21, 1931, in Rexfield, Iowa, the daughter of John J. and Elizabeth Skidmore McGroarty. She grew up in Des Moines, Iowa. She was a member of Mount Calvary Lutheran Church, precinct committeewoman for South Wheatland Township, member of the National Association of Letter Carriers, holding offices locally, statewide and nationally and American Legion Auxiliary and was a volunteer for the Macon County Chapter of the Red Cross. Mary's first job was with the Iowa Inspection Bureau for 10 years. In Decatur, she worked for Wolverine Insurance for five years. In 1971, she went to work for Kemper Insurance as a transcriber and after 14 years she was downsized.
Her avocation was the NALCA. She held all local offices. She was elected to the state board in 1968, where she held the presidency for six years. In 1978, she was elected to the national board for eight very rewarding years. Rex and Mary met in 1954. She married Rex Gallup on Dec. 24, 1954. She joined her husband selling uniforms to letter carriers for Brookfield Uniform. Another group she wanted to acknowledge is American Legion Post 105, where she served as the president for one year. Her years with the Legion were very rewarding and hopefully she made many friends there. Her hobbies were crossword puzzles, a Jeopardy junkie (she went to Chicago twice) and gambling. She enjoyed revisiting her money all around the country and on cruise ships. She had a good life. Her final pun -- she had a "merry gallup."
She leaves her husband; daughter, Mickalene "Mickey" McDaniel and husband Jim of Decatur; grandchildren, David Matthew and Kathryn Elizabeth McDaniel (the joys of her life), both of Decatur; the Esther and Cecil Damery family.
She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother.
The family of Mrs. Gallup would like to extend their sincere thanks to Dr. Perry Guaglianone and the Cancer Care Center for the care they gave to Mary Ellen.
