DECATUR -- Virgil D. Hinkle Jr., 85, of Decatur passed away 11:47 p.m. Thursday (Feb. 27, 2003) in Decatur Memorial Hospital.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday in Star of Hope Chapel, in Graceland Cemetery. Visitation will be 9:30 a.m. until services. Entombment will be in Star of Hope Mausoleum, with military rites by the Macon County Honor Guard. Graceland/Fairlawn Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Memorials: donor's choice.
Mr. Hinkle was born April 5, 1917, in Lafayette, Ind., the son of Virgil and Emma Hubler Hinkle. He and his wife were the owners and operators of V and E Market and V and E Dairy. He served his country in the
Army during World War II. He married Iris Eileen Gardner on Sept. 11, 1938, in St. Charles, Mo. She preceded him in death March 23, 1990.
Surviving are his nephew, David Patterson and wife Marsha of Decatur; niece, Annette Voss and husband Henry of Woodlands, Texas; lifelong friend, Virginia Schindler of Decatur; great-niece, Lois Parker; great-nephews, Marty Hawkins and Bryan Hawkins, both of Memphis, Tenn.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; sister, Anna Carroll.

Jesse
FORSYTH -- Ronald Emil Jesse, 61, of Forsyth, went to be with the Lord Friday (Feb. 28, 2003) in Decatur Memorial Hospital, with his family by his side.
Memorial Mass will be 1 p.m. Thursday in Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, with Father Rick Weltin as celebrant. Visitation will be one hour before services. Mr. Jesse was born March 20, 1941, in Sandusky, Ohio, the son of Emil Karl and Elizabeth June Dobrowski Jesse. He was retired from Norfolk Southern Corp. as a roadway equipment supervisor. He served his country in the
Army. Ron was involved in racing since he was 16 years old, from a mechanic to being a sponsor. He recently received the WDZQ Award and the Behind the Pit Wall Helping Hand Award of 2002. He owned a race parts business, "Sandy's Circle Track." He married Sandra A. Martin on March 31, 1984, in Bellevue, Ohio.
Surviving are his wife; sons, Ronald Edwin Jesse and wife Lee of Monroeville, Ohio; Edmond John Martin of Forsyth; daughters, Peggy Lee Wobser and husband Chip of Holton, Mich.; Lori Ann Lanham and husband Junior of Niantic; Michelle Ann Little and husband Jeffrey of Belvidere; brother, John J. Ohlemacher of Norwalk, Ohio; 10 grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents.

DECATUR -- Helen Marie Nemeth, 84, of Decatur died Thursday (Feb. 27, 2003).
Private graveside services will be in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery, Lincoln. Tanzyus-Logan Funeral Service Inc., Decatur, is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Nemeth was born June 27, 1918, in Lincoln, the daughter of Aloise and Marie Huffmeir Pangerl. She was a retired registered nurse.
Surviving are her daughter, Rebecca King of Decatur; son, Ernst Nemeth of Lincoln; grandsons, Tony Nemeth; Andre Nemeth and wife Missy; Michael Hayes and fiancee Loringie Clark; Ryan Hayes and Alex King.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brothers and sisters.

Mrs. McClure was born Oct. 18, 1946, in Decatur, the daughter of Thomas and Margaret Scribner Manks. She was a member of First Southern Baptist Church of Boody. She married Thomas W. McClure on Oct. 8, 1966. He preceded her in death Aug. 20, 2002.
Surviving are her sons, Robert "Bob" Dale McClure and wife Cindy of Dalton City; Anthony "Tony" Lynn McClure of Decatur; mother, Margaret Manks of Decatur; brothers, Thomas Manks and wife Adele of Decatur; sisters, Rebecca Montminy and husband Rick of Arizona; Kathy Hutchins and husband Mike of Mount Auburn; Debbie Sage and husband Roger of Florida; Michelle Lourash and husband Owen of Decatur; beautiful granddaughters, Ashley and Megan; several nieces, nephews and friends.
She was preceded in death by her father and husband.

DECATUR -- Shirley L. Mendel, 85, of Seattle, Wash., died Sunday (Feb. 23, 2003) in Seattle, where she had lived since 1980.

Shirley was born Oct. 20, 1917, in Ashland, Mo., the daughter of Otho and Dovey Brown Foster. She formerly lived in Decatur, where she and her husband, Leo, managed United Travel Service, a successful travel agency. As an adult, she returned to college and earned a bachelor's degree from Millikin University in 1974. After moving to the Northwest, Shirl
ey worked in the travel industry, retiring in 1988. She was a member of American Society of Travel Agents, Association of University Women, Seattle Tenants Union and University Unitarian Church.
Surviving are her children, Janet Mendel of Spain; David Mendel; Phillip Mendel of Los Angeles, Calif.; Elaine Mendel-John of New Orleans, La.; brother, Derwood Foster of Oregon; three grandchildren.

Popham
CHARLESTON -- Beulah Popham, 101, of Charleston passed away 10:03 p.m. Friday (Feb. 28, 2003) in Hilltop Convalescent Center, Charleston.
Services honoring her life will be 2 p.m. Wednesday in Harper-Swickard Funeral Home, Charleston, with the Rev. Bill Boaz officiating. Visitation will be one hour before services. Burial will follow in Mound Cemetery, Charleston. Memorials: Hilltop Convalescent Center.
Mrs. Popham was born Nov. 30, 1901, in Coles County, the daughter of Mont and Ada Anderson Milburn. She was very active in gardening and worked alongside her husband of more than 60 years on their family farm. She was very proud of her family and always enjoyed spending time with them. She was a member of Charleston Community Church. She and Elmer enjoyed square dancing and she also enjoyed playing both the piano and the organ. She married Elmer H. Popham on Sept. 22, 1920, in Charleston Methodist Church. He preceded her in death July 12, 1983.
Surviving are her daughter-in-law, Verna Popham of Charleston; grandchildren, Mike Popham and wife Marti and Ron Popham and wife Tammy, all of Charleston; great-grandchildren, Ashley Popham and Blake Popham, both of Charleston.
She was preceded in death by her son, Monte C. Popham, on Feb. 11, 1994.

Mrs. Edwards was born Oct. 18, 1927, in McLean, the daughter of Myrl Reeser and Lucinda Sutter. She was affiliated with Weldon United Methodist Church. She spent most of her youth in the Weldon area. She attended Bosserman Elementary School and graduated from Nixon Township High School. She also took some business school courses. She loved animals and enjoyed walking her dog. She also enjoyed craftwork, traveling and growing flowers. She loved to sing at her church and other community functions. She liked helping other people. She married Donald E. Edwards on Jan. 18, 1948.
Surviving are her son, David (Cathy) Edwards of Lincoln; grandchildren, Danielle Edwards, David Edwards and Sara Edwards, all of Lincoln; sisters, Louise Provines of Vandalia; Carolyn (Calvin) Lighthall of Rockford; Dorothy (Vincent) LoBosco of Algonquin; sister-in-law, Marie Reeser of Weldon; several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Stanley Reeser; stepgrandchild, Skye Edwards; brother-in-law, Robert Provines.
