DECATUR -- Lee C. Moorehead, 84, of Batavia, died Friday (March 21, 2003) in Michealsen Health Center, Batavia.

A memorial celebration for Lee Charles Moorehead will be 11 a.m. Saturday in Batavia United Methodist Church. Visitation will be one hour before services in the church. Graveside services will be noon Sunday in Fairlawn Cemetery. Arrangements are
by Yurs-Peterson-Moss Funeral Home, Batavia. Memorials: Memorial Fund of Batavia United Methodist Church or Winifred Davis Moorehead Scholarship Millikin University.

Lee was born Feb. 28, 1919, in Peoria, to Lee Coddington and Dial Winifred Davis Moorehead. His family soon moved to Decatur and at age three, he suffered the loss of his father. He went down the street from his home to Millikin University. In his graduating Class of 1941 was his mother, Winifred, who had returned to complete her degree. He entered Boston University School of Theology and in the summer of 1942, he married Millikin classmate Betty Birmingham of Chicago. They returned to Boston, where Lee finished seminary and Betty earned a master's degree in social work. Lee was ordained into the Methodist Church in 1944, and was first appointed minister to Ohio State University students at the Wesley Foundation and associate pastor of Indianola Methodist Church, Columbus. There followed pastorates in Ada, Chilicothe and Columbus, Ohio. He served four years as professor of preaching and worship in St. Paul School of Theology, Kansas City, Mo. Lee returned to serving churches in Delaware, Ohio, Carbondale and Green Bay and Madison, Wis. He and Betty retired in 1984 to Batavia. Lee was a delegate to General and Jurisdictional Conferences and a member of National Board of Christian Social Concerns. In the summer of 1956, the family went on an exchange pastorate in England. In 1961, he wrote the book "Freedom of the Pulpit" and in retirement, he co-authored the book "Six Stages of a Pastor's Life." For his retirement, First United Methodist Church of Madison published a collection entitled "Sermons to Remember." For many years, he taught around the country at United Methodist Church's Schools for Missions and directed the Wisconsin Conference of United Methodist Church's School for Preaching. In retirement, he served as parish minister at Community United Methodist Church, Naperville and Batavia United Methodist Church, where he was named minister emeritus. Because of Lee's lifelong interest in Abraham Lincoln, for 22 years he directed an annual seminar in Springfield. He was well-known to many prominent Lincoln scholars and authors in the country and regularly had them participate in his seminars. He created the successful Books Between Bites program, first launched in Green Bay and
Madison and later in Batavia, where it has flourished for 16 years. In Batavia, he joined ACCESS, serving as its president and chair of the Heritage Committee. His great interest in the story of Mary Todd Lincoln's brief stay in Batavia led him to establish the annual Lincoln Dinner Theater. He served on the Batavia Library Board and in 1991 was chosen Batavia Citizen of the Year. Together with Betty, Lee coordinated their church's involvement at Hesed House and volunteered there frequently. They delivered Golden Diners meals, volunteered at the Depot Museum, assisted with RSVP and coordinated blood drives. Lee was an extremely inquisitive and vigorous person, dedicating himself to many causes, especially the
civil rights movement and to the exchange of cultures and religions. He thrived on living in university towns and enjoyed theatre, symphony, opera and sporting events.
