Duncan
ASSUMPTION -- John William Duncan, 90, of Assumption died 12:15 p.m. Friday (March 28, 2003) in his home.
Services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday in Seitz Funeral Home, Assumption, with the Revs. Charles Banning and Tom Compton officiating. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Monday. Burial will be in Pleasant View Cemetery, Assumption. Memorials: Assumption First United Methodist Church.
John was born April 11, 1912, in Assumption, the son of John N. and Helen Nellie Joyner Duncan. He formerly served as city clerk in Assumption and was on the Christian County Board for many years. He was affiliated with Assumption First United Methodist Church. He was a retired rural mail carrier. He was an avid golfer and all-around sports fan. He married Dorothy Beard on May 22, 1947, in Decatur.
Surviving are his wife; son, John and wife Noreen of Decatur; daughter, Barbara Endrizzi and husband Aubie of Decatur; grandchildren, Nick Duncan, Jack Duncan, Natalie Clark and husband Matt, all of Decatur; great-grandson Duncan Scott Clark of Decatur.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister.
Gruenloh
DONNELLSON -- Melvin G. Gruenloh, 69, Donnellson, farmer, died Friday (March 28, 2003).
Services: 11 a.m. Monday, St. Lawrence Catholic Church, Greenville. Visitation: after 3 p.m. Sunday, with 7 p.m. prayer service. Burial: St. Lawrence Cemetery, Greenville. Memorials: Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Panama.
Hammer
MANSFIELD -- Rolland Dean Hammer, 81, of Mansfield passed away 5 a.m. Saturday (March 29, 2003) in LeRoy Manor.
Services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday in Calvert-Belangee-Bruce Funeral Home, Mansfield, with the Rev. Jim Tinzmann officiating. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Monday. Burial will be in Mansfield Cemetery. Memorials: United Parkinsons Foundation or American Diabetes. Association.
Mr. Hammer was born June 9, 1921, in Rose Farm, Ohio, the son of Rolland J. and Myrtle E. Givens Hammer. He was a World War II
Army veteran. He was a member of Kelso Garver Post 650 American Legion, Mansfield. He married Dorothy H. Kenison on Sept. 17, 1940, in Crooksville, Ohio.
Surviving are his wife; sons, Rolland Lee (Joanna) Hammer of Mahomet; Hayward Dean (Ruth) Hammer of Decatur; Larry Paul Hammer of Rantoul; Ralph E. (Peggy) Hammer of Farmer City; daughter, Brenda Kay (James) Howard of Springfield; nine grandchildren; one foster grandson; 12 great-grandchildren; brother, Donald (Arlene) Hammer of New Lexington, Ohio; sisters, Berneda Dickerson and Patricia (Ray) Rogers, both of New Lexington.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Terry Hammer; one brother, James Enos Hammer; one sister, Josephine Jones and one grandson, Steve Hammer.
McCarty
CLINTON -- Grace I. McCarty, 74, of Clinton died 9:12 a.m. Thursday (March 27, 2003) in her family residence in Clinton.
Services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday in Calvert Funeral Home, Clinton, with J. Kent Hickerson officiating. Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m. Monday. Burial will be in McClimans Cemetery, Hallsville. Memorials: First Christian Church Youth Ministries, Clinton.
Mrs. McCarty was born Jan. 31, 1929, in Benton, the daughter of Frank and Emma Smothers. She was affiliated with First Christian Church. She married John Lewis McCarty on Oct. 4, 1948, in Benton. He preceded her in death Feb. 8, 1982.
Surviving are her daughters, Shiela (Henry) Sisk of Canton; Peggy (Dennis Leggett) Paddock of Clinton; grandchildren, Steve (Deann) Miller, Stephanie Paddock and Kyle Paddock; great-grandchildren, Seth Miller, Tristan Miller and Savanna Miller; close friend, Phil Flemming of Bloomington.
She was preceded in death by one son, Stephen Louis McCarty, three brothers and two sisters.
Stigers
COWDEN -- J. Melvin Stigers, 91, of Savoy, formerly of Cowden, died 2 p.m. Saturday (March 29, 2003) in his residence.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday in Renner-Wikoff Chapel, Urbana, with the Revs. Greg Swango and Richard Wolfe officiating. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Monday. Burial will be 2 p.m. Tuesday in Mound Cemetery, Cowden. Memorials: Schultz Lewis Children's Home, Valparaiso, Ind.
Mr. Stigers was born Nov. 1, 1911, in Cowden, the son of Albert and Mattie Chatham Stigers. He was an auto mechanic and service manager for Purity Bakery in Champaign and retired after 13 years of service at the Champaign location. He was a member Philo Road Church of Christ, Urbana. His interests included refinishing antique furniture and woodworking. He married Viola Robertson on March 31, 1932. She preceded him in death on Dec. 26, 1995.
Surviving are his daughter, Joyce Swango of Monticello; three grandchildren; six great-grandchildren.
He was preceded by his parents, wife and three brothers.
Brown
DECATUR -- Cortnee Anne Brown, 20, of Decatur departed this life along with her special friend Shalin Bond on Friday (March 28, 2003).
Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday in Antioch Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. C.D. Stuart officiating. Visitation will be one hour before services in the church. Burial will be in North Fork Cemetery. Tanzyus-Logan Funeral Service Inc. is in charge of arrangements. Memorials: Victims of Violent Crime.
Cortnee was born Dec. 6, 1982, in Decatur. She was a homemaker, mother and an auto mechanic.
Surviving are her son, Cen'cere Woods; father, Warren P. Brown; mother, Leslie A. Brown; sisters, Danyale LeVeck, Lyndsey Brown and Laura Brown; grandparents, Thomas and Anne LeVeck and Mary Brown; great-grandmother, Mary Jo LeVeck; two aunts; eight uncles; many friends.
She was preceded in death by her aunt, Loretha R. Brown, and great-grandfather, Thomas Clifford LeVeck.
Imboden
DECATUR -- Edward Ponting Imboden Jr., 81, of Decatur passed away Saturday (March 29, 2003) in his home.
Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Thursday in Brintlinger and Earl Funeral Homes with visitation one hour before services. Burial will be in Fairlawn Cemetery
with military rites by the Macon County Honor Guard. In lieu of flowers, memorials to Macon County Honor Guard.
Edward was born April 22, 1921, in Decatur, to the late Edward P. Imboden Sr. and Mary Blanche Davis Imboden. He served in the
Army with the 609th Armored Ordnance Battalion during World War II. He was a 20-year member of the Macon County Honor Guard, a member of First United Methodist Church and a life member of American Legion Post 105 and VFW Post 99. He was a member of Elks Lodge 401, and his nephew, Larry Grabb, shared the same interests of antique cars with his "Uncle Eddie." His family and friends remember Eddie always putting the needs of others before his own. Eddie lived on the Imboden family farm. As an adult, he built the new family home in South Shores. He lived in the neighborhood he knew from the 1920s until his death. He married Dorothy Grabb in February 1948 in Decatur.
Surviving are his daughter, M. Jill Sobottka and husband Frank of Eagle River, Alaska; son, Edward Doug Imboden of Decatur.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife and brother, John G. Imboden II.
He was an expert auto mechanic, a loving father and a beloved husband. He will be sadly missed by his family and friends.
Ventress
DECATUR -- Nadine Ventress, 81, of Decatur died 3:25 a.m. Sunday (March 30, 2003) in Heritage Manor Nursing Home.
Memorial services will be 1 p.m. Thursday in Tabernacle Baptist Church. Brintlinger and Earl Funeral Homes is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Ventress was born May 5, 1921, in Dahlgren, the daughter of Owen and Mary Dial Goin. She loved all of her animals. She married Sheridan Reed Ventress in Kentucky in 1942.
Surviving are her daughter, Lynelle Sumner and husband Jerry of Decatur; grandchildren, Jenelle Sumner of Bloomington; Michael Sumner of Decatur; brother, John "Bud" Goin and wife Sue of Evansville.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and brother, Owen Jr.
