DECATUR -- Barbara J. Romans, 72, of Decatur died 12:40 a.m. Sunday (March 30, 2003) in McKinley Court.
Memorial services will be 10 a.m. Thursday in Dawson & Wikoff West Wood Street Funeral Home. Memorials: McKinley Court.
Barbara was born May 25, 1930, in Heyworth, the daughter of Glenn P. and Mary Lou Wilson. She was a homemaker. She married Walton Romans on April 2, 1950. He preceded her in death April 15, 1991.
Surviving are her children, Gary W. Romans and wife Patty of York, Neb.; Val C. Romans and wife Cindy of Baytown, Texas; Jeff G. Romans and wife Mary of Springfield, Mo.; Barbara "Lindy" Warren and husband Kenny of White Pigeon, Mich.; Lori A. Romans of Decatur.
She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.
Barbara, our mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, friend, confidante and mentor slipped gracefully to the other side. She was an amazing woman who found beauty in the world around her and took delight in simple pleasures. Kind and generous, we never lacked for someone to turn to when in need of encouragement, conversation or companionship. Each life she touched was made richer. Rest well, Mom. The hard part is over.

DALTON CITY -- Allen E. "Gene" Smith, 69, of Dalton City died 4:10 p.m. Saturday (March 29, 2003) in St. Mary's Hospital, Decatur.
Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday in Dawson & Wikoff Funeral Home, Mount Zion. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday. Burial will be in Mount Zion Cemetery. Memorials: American Heart Association or American Cancer Society.
Mr. Smith was born Oct. 18, 1933, in Dalton City, the son of William R. and Goldie Lindley Smith. He was retired from Caterpillar Inc., after 35 years of service with the company. He served in the
Army and was a
Korean War veteran. Mr. Smith had been a volunteer firefighter for the Dora Township Fire Department, had served on the village board for Dalton City and had belonged to UAW Local 751. He was affiliated with Dalton City Christian Church. He married Beverly S. Brackett on June 21, 1964.
Surviving are his wife; daughters, Diane Smith of Schaumburg; Kim Smith of Elgin; brothers, William L. "Bill" Smith and wife Donna of Dalton City; F.D. Smith and wife Cheryl of Long Creek.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Sprague
CLINTON -- Rodger W. Sprague Sr., 86, of Clinton died 8:26 a.m. Sunday (March 30, 2003) in Dr. John Warner Hospital, Clinton.
Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday in Calvert Funeral Home, Clinton, with the Rev. Penelope Barber officiating. Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday. Burial will be in Mausoleum Park Cemetery, Clinton, with military rites. Memorials: DeWitt County Friendship Center, Baby Fold or Clinton United Methodist Church.
Mr. Sprague was born Dec. 29, 1916, in Barnett Township, DeWitt County, the son of Harry and Ada Mae Kindred Sprague. He was affiliated with Clinton United Methodist Church and was an
Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of Clinton American Legion and Bloomington Moose Lodge and owned and operated Sprague's Service & Garage Station and a corn shelling business. Mr. Sprague enjoyed his grandchildren, gardening and sharing with others. He was a gentle man. He married Cynthia E. Burger on Nov. 4, 1939, in Clinton. She passed away Dec. 30, 1975. He later married Della Wey on Dec. 5, 1976. She passed away Dec. 27, 1995.
Surviving are his son, Rodger W. (Sally-Quinn) Sprague Jr. of Clinton; stepsons, Donald Wey and John L. Wey, both of Heyworth; stepdaughter, Thelma Rosendale of Saybrook; grandchildren, Elizabeth Sprague and Nathan Sprague; special niece, Thora (Tom) Bray of Clinton; eight stepgrandchildren; 10 great-stepgrandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his first wife; second wife; granddaughter, Allison Sprague; two brothers and one sister.

FARINA -- Mark Duane Walker, 64, of St. Louis, Mo., formerly of Farina, died 2:45 p.m. Sunday (March 30, 2003) in St. John's Mercy Hospital, St. Louis.
Services will be 2 p.m. Thursday in Immanuel Lutheran Church, Altamont, with the Revs. Daniel Hudson and Michael Schuessler officiating. Visitation will be 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday in Kriegshauer Mortuary-West Chapel, St. Louis, and 12:30 p.m. until services in the church. Burial will be in Arborcrest Memorial Park, Effingham. Dr. Walker was born Sept. 11, 1938, in Vandalia, the son of Glenn and Fleta Clark Walker. He received his bachelor's degree from St. Francis College in Joliet. He then received his Th.D. from the Gulf Coast Seminary. He was a purchasing agent for the Hunter Engineering Co. in St. Louis. Dr. Walker was very active in various Christian Outreach Associations in the St. Louis area and other needed areas for the past 40 years. He married Reta Jean Wolff on July 31, 1959, in St. Peter Lutheran Church.
Surviving are his wife; daughters, Jill Roberts and husband C. Blair of Tryon, N.C.; Jami Elizabeth Walker of St. Louis; brother, John T. Walker and wife Jude of Palm Springs, Calif.; sister, Glenda Corley and husband Robert of Fort Myers, Fla.; granddaughter, Mia Taylor Benthall of St. Louis; several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Kenton Dale Walker; and father-in-law and mother-in-law, Edgar and Leona Wolff.
Bond
DECATUR -- Shalin Lamar Bond, 20, of Decatur died Friday (March 28, 2003) along with his special friend Cortnee Brown.
Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday in the Church of the Living God Temple 3 with Elder Mark Bond officiating. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Friday in Walker Funeral Service and Chapel. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials to Shalin L. Bond Fund at the Land of Lincoln Credit.
Shalin was born Oct. 26, 1982, in Decatur, the son of Darlene Bond and Anthony Paul Smith Sr. Shalin was a 2001 graduate of Eisenhower High School, where he was a basketball star. He also played basketball and football for Stephen Decatur High School before transferring to Eisenhower High School. He was a member of Bible Way Pentecostal Church and the Boys and Girls Club.
He leaves to cherish memories, his parents of Decatur; son, Shalin Lamar Bond Jr.; brothers, Anthony Paul Smith Jr. and Ra-Shan Smith, both of Decatur; Solomon Malik Smith and David Thomas, both of Springfield; sisters, Shaquita and Sikisha Bond, Ronketta Jones, Danae and Danique Smith, all of Decatur; grandparents, James T. "Stag" Reed of Decatur; Eddie Sue Smith of Decatur; Vernon Burton of Memphis, Tenn.; a host of nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, great-aunts, great-uncles, many cousins and friends.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Kishan Smith; maternal grandmother, Annie M. "Bessie" Bond; and special friend, Cortnee Brown.
