Samuels

DECATUR -- Dr. Thomas W. Samuels Jr., 79, of Decatur passed away peacefully Tuesday (May 20, 2003) in his home with his family and friends by his side.

Private graveside services will be in Fairlawn Cemetery. Graceland/Fairlawn Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Memorials: The T. W. Samuels Lecture Series at Millikin University or donor's choice.

Dr. Samuels was born July 8, 1923, in Decatur, the son of Thomas W. and Pauline Flickenger Samuels of Atwood.

A lifelong resident of Decatur, Dr. Samuels was a graduate of Stephen Decatur High School; he attended Millikin University and Northwestern University in Evanston prior to World War II. He served in the Army Air Corps from 1942 to 1945.

Following his service to his country, he received his undergraduate degree from Northwestern University. He then graduated from the University of Illinois Medical School, whereupon he served a one-year internship and a four-year residency in surgery in Cook County Hospital, Chicago.

Upon returning to Decatur, Dr. Samuels began his private practice of medicine. He was an active physician and surgeon for 30 years, beloved by patients and colleagues.

Dr. Samuels' memberships included: Macon County Medical Society, president in 1969; Decatur Memorial Hospital Medical Staff president, 1973 to 1974; Decatur Memorial Hospital Board of Directors, 1975 to 1984; Directors Council of Decatur Memorial Hospital, 1984 to 2003; Millikin University Board of Directors; Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Illinois Board of Directors; State of Illinois Insurance Board.

Dr. Samuels married Nettie Lou Salisbury Staley in 1969. They shared 30 years of marriage.

Surviving are his brother, William J. Samuels of Cupertino, Calif.; nephews, Tom and John Samuels; Wayne Etheredge and wife Nelda of Pensacola, Fla.; sons, Rollin and Matt.

He was preceded in death by his wife and parents.

Pride-Prescott

DECATUR -- Roger K. Prideendash Prescott, 57, of Decatur died 10:45 a.m. Saturday (May 17, 2003) in his home.

Graveside services will be 9:30 a.m. Thursday in Long Point Cemetery, Niantic, with the Rev. Larry Flaugher officiating. No visitation. Arrangements are by J.J. Moran and Sons Funeral Home.

Mr. Pride was born in Chicago on Nov. 10, 1945, the son of Joseph and Marjorie Louise Marsh Prescott. He was a General Electric Co. laborer.

Surviving are his mother of Riverside, Calif.; brothers, Ronald Pride-Prescott of Tennessee and Richard Pride-Prescott of Las Vegas, Nev.; and sister, Marcia Crowl of Riverside.

He was preceded in death by one sister.

Tish

DECATUR -- Richard Clayton Tish, 74, Decatur, retired from Mueller Co., died Saturday (May 17, 2003).

Private family graveside services: Bilyeu Cemetery, Moweaqua, with military rites. Memorial services: 2 p.m. Wednesday, Christ United Methodist Church. No visitation. Arrangements by: Graceland/Fairlawn Funeral Home. Memorials: Christ United Methodist Church, Rock Springs Center, Lincoln Manor or Alzheimer's Foundation.

Bingaman

CENTRALIA -- Ann E. Bingaman, 103, of Centralia died 10:59 a.m. Monday (May 19, 2003) in St. Mary's Good Samaritan Hospital, Centralia.

Graveside services will be 1:30 p.m. Wednesday in South Hill/Fairlawn Cemetery, Vandalia, with the Rev. Linda Gordon officiating and Ward Sneed assisting. No visitation. Arrangements are by Miller Funeral Home, Vandalia. Memorials: to the family.

Ann was born July 22, 1899, in Fayette County, the daughter of Perry W. and Sally Nellie Roberts Jarrett. A
homemaker, Ann was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Centralia and a charter member of the American Legion Auxiliary in Vandalia. She married John H. Bingaman in 1920. He preceded her in death Feb. 20, 1959.

Surviving are her daughter, Bette Hoyt and husband Merritt of Centralia; grandchildren, John Hoyt and wife Jennifer and Debbie Mudd and husband Keith, all of Centralia; great-grandchildren, Shawn Brown and wife Kristi of Ashley; Angie Brown of Centralia; Keith Cameron of Nashville; great-great-grandchildren, Dakota Korzenewski of Centralia; Andrew Brown of Ashley; and Johnathon Korzenewski of Centralia; special niece, Phyllis Thoman of Vandalia.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and 19 brothers and sisters.

Hall

ROSE HILL -- Lois Hall, 79, Lowell, Ind., formerly of Rose Hill, died Monday (May 19, 2003).

Private services. No visitation. Arrangements by: Barkley Funeral Chapel, Greenup.

Sarff

SIGEL -- Elisabeth "Lis" Holkenbrink Sarff, 80, Sigel, retired nurse, died Monday (May 19, 2003).

Services: 10 a.m. Friday, St. Michael The Archangel Church, Sigel. Visitation: 2 to 4 p.m. and 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday with 7 p.m. prayer service in the church. Burial: St. Michael Cemetery, Sigel. Arrangements by: Swengel-O'Dell Funeral Home, Neoga. Memorials: St. Michael The Archangel Church.

World War II Army veteran. Member: St. Michael The Archangel Church; St. Ann's Sodality, Sigel. Survivors: husband, Lewis; stepson, Gary Sarff, Salt Lake City, Utah; stepdaughter, Christi Sarff, Joliet; brothers, Henry Holkenbrink, Effingham; Albert Holkenbrink, Sigel; sisters, Margaret Fosbender, Anna McMahan, Clara Mettendorf and Loretta Krampe, all of Sigel; Barbara Hardieck, Teutopolis. Preceded by: parents, one stepdaughter and two sisters.

Galloway

CLINTON -- Enid Katherine Galloway, 83, of Clinton died Sunday (May 18, 2003) in Lincoln Manor Nursing Home.

Graveside services will be 10:15 a.m. Thursday in Fairlawn Cemetery with Pastor Stan Haxton officiating. Visitation will be 9 to 10 a.m. Thursday in Graceland/Fairlawn Funeral Home. Burial will be in Fairlawn Cemetery. Memorials: Lincoln Manor or Alzheimer's Association.

Enid was born Oct. 31, 1919, in rural Assumption, the daughter of Lewis Otterbeine and Florence C. Bandy Winings. She was a grade school teacher in a rural school, the Decatur School District, Dewitt School and Maroa Grade School. An Army veteran, Enid served in World War II. She married Jack Galloway Sr. on Aug. 15, 1947, in Rossville, Ga., and he preceded her in death Dec. 31, 2002.

Surviving are her son, Jack Galloway Jr. and wife Doris of Clinton; daughter, Katherine Ann Galloway of Yucca Valley, Calif.; brother, Daniel Winings of Thebes; sisters, Joyce Collum and husband Fred of Mictun, Fla.; Abby Damery of Decatur; Sara Anne Bates and husband Charlie of Mokane, Mo.; four grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, four brothers and one sister.

Hays

FLORA -- Simon Junior Hays, 73, Flora, truck driver, died Tuesday (May 20, 2003).

Services: 10 a.m. Thursday, Frank & Bright Funeral Home, Flora. Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday. Burial: Oak Mound Cemetery, Xenia.

Wells

BEMENT -- Martha Lee Wells, 86, of Bement died 11 p.m. Sunday (May 18, 2003) in her home.

Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday in Bement United Methodist Church with the Rev. Steve Bramlett officiating. Visitation will be one hour before services. Burial will be in Bement Township Cemetery. Roux-Hinds Funeral Home, Bement, is in charge of arrangements. Memorials: American Diabetes. Association or Bement United Methodist Church.

Mrs. Wells was born Nov. 22, 1916, in Jackson County, Tenn., the daughter of Charlie and Julia Manier Burgess. She was a member of Bement United Methodist Church. She married David H. Wells on Sept. 5, 1942, in Rossville, Ga.

Surviving are her husband; sisters, Edith Moline Taylor of Bement; Minnie Peyton Micolites of Oxford, Mass.; Willa Dean James of Smyrna, Ga.; nephew, David (Sandy) Secrest; nieces, Wendy (Mike) Highley, Angela (fiance, Ed Gogerty) Taylor and Tammy (Scott) Allison; great-nephews, Michael (Kendra) Highley and Andrew Allison; great-nieces, Catherine (Ryan) Krueger, Ashley Taylor and Hillary Allison.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother and four sisters.

Hill

VILLA GROVE -- Vivian Z. Hill, 76, Villa Grove, Rainbow Antique Shoppe co-owner, died Monday (May 19, 2003).

Services: 10 a.m. Friday, First Christian Church, Villa Grove. Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Joines Funeral Home, Villa Grove. Burial: Villa Grove Cemetery. Memorials: First Christian Church or Little Galilee Christian Assembly Camp, Clinton.

Member: First Christian Church. Survivors: sons, John R. Hill, Coal City; James R. Hill, Thousand Oaks, Calif.; daughter, Annette Wolfe, Granger, Ind.; six grandchildren. Preceded by: parents and three brothers.

Miller

NOBLE -- Jerry Lee Miller, 57, Noble, died Friday (May 16, 2003).

Services: 1 p.m. Thursday, Summers-Kistler Funeral Home, Noble. Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday. Burial: Hanna Cemetery, Noble.
