Mercedes Abel, 101 of Moline, died Wednesday, March 31, 2004 at Heartland Healthcare Center, Moline. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, April 3, 2004 at Tabernacle Baptist Church, Moline. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Friday at the church. Burial will be at Riverside Cemetery, Moline. Memorials may be made to Tabernacle Baptist Church or the R.A. Allen Scholarship Fund. The former Mercedes Stinson was born November 10, 1902 in Marshall, TX, daughter of Marion and Ida Stinson. She married Albert Abel August 13, 1932 in Kansas City, MO. He died April 26, 1982. Mrs. Abel was an active member of Tabernacle Baptist Church where she taught Sunday school, sang in the choir, and served as chairperson of the All Nation Tea for many years. Her other memberships included the Moline Women’s Civic Club and Eastern Star. She loved watching Tiger Woods play golf, was a Cub fan and an avid fisher. She loved birds and insisted that the bird feeder outside her window be kept full at all times. Her favorite song was “ If I Could Help Somebody”, which she tried to do wherever she went. While at Heartland she would read the Bible and other books to those who desired it but were unable to read themselves due to illness. She sang in a group, was elected President of an activity club at Heartland and truly tried to make a difference in the lives of others. She was the youngest and the last survivor of thirteen children. SURVIVORS: include her very special friends; Roscoe and Gloria Spencer of East Moline and Joe and Helen Allen of Moline, nephews Larry (Linda) Abel of Canton, OH, Rev. Earl Abel, Kansas City, MO and a host of friends. Roscoe and Gloria wish to express their gratitude to Heartland Healthcare Center and Dr. Reynaldo Castro for the exceptional care given to their friend, Mrs.Abel.

Wyman R. Coulter, 86 of Orion died March 29, 2004 at Illini Restorative Care, Silvis, IL Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday, March 31, 2004 at Orion United Methodist Church. Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. Tuesday at Kirk, Huggins & Esterdahl Funeral Home, Ltd., Orion. Burial will be at Western Township Cemetery, Orion. Memorials may be made to the Orion United Methodist Church where he was a member. Wyman was born July 8, 1917 in Western Township, IL to Guy and Bessie Richardson Coulter on his grandfather’s farm west of Orion. He attended Orion schools and graduated from the University of Illinois. He entered G.E. Insurance Agency in 1939. He married June Rindler on April 23, 1960 at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church Davenport, IA. Wyman retired from Coulter Agency in 2004 after 61 years of serving the community. Wyman was a WWII veteran serving in China with the 14th Airforce Flying Tigers. He was a charter member of the 14th Airforce Association and the 75th Fighters Association. He spent 20 years as the clerk for Western Towhship. He was president and secretary of the Orion Business Association. He served as the secretary for the Osco and Western Insurance Co., from 1974-2002. He was a member of the Orion Chamber of Commerce, Orion American Legion where he served as adjutant and finance officer, Secretary of Orion Telephone Co. from 1974-1990 and a charter member of the Davenport 60 plus Club. He loved to dance, which was how he met his wife June. He enjoyed yardwork, gardening and he loved his job. Mark Robert Mendoza, beloved son of Jesse and Tilli Mendoza, 34 of Moline, died Wednesday, March 24, 2004 in Davenport. Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Sunday, March 28, 2004 at Esterdahl Mortuary, Ltd. 6601-38th Avenue, Moline. Visitation will be Saturday from 1 – 5 p.m. at the funeral home. At 3:00 pm a Rosary will be performed by Sister Michelle of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Moline. Cremation will follow the service. Memorials may be made to Robb’s House in Rock Island or the Robert Young Mental Health Center, Riverside. Mark was born April 6. 1969 in Moline, IL. Mark attended Blackhawk College, Moline before attending the University of Illinois, Circle Campus, Chicago. He was employed as the restaurant manager at Five in Moline. He also worked in the hotel and food industry as a trainer for “Let Us Entertain You” in Chicago. Mark loved tennis, baseball, walking, reading, music, movies, shopping and running, where he completed his first marathon, The Chicago Marathon, in 2003. He also participated in the Bix 7, three different times. He volunteered his time in many Chicago hospitals and the Aids Foundation. Mark was known for his generosity, his abililty to listen to his friends and also as the social coordinator for his many friends. SURVIVORS: Parents Brother, Jeff Mendoza, Raleigh, NC., Sister: Stephanie Mendoza Moline Nephews, Brent & Jacob Mendoza, Davenport Niece Katlyn Mendoza, Raleigh, NC. Grandmother: “Gram”, Soledad Guerrero, Chicago, IL Special friends, Beth Peterson, Moline, Lori Larson, Moline, Susan Lanning, California He will also be missed by many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.

Visitation will be one hour prior to service time. Burial will be at Moline Memorial Park. Betty was born July 8, 1926 in Manington, West Virginia to William Clyde and Mary Ellen Hickman Watson. She married Robert Morris on January 10, 1948 in Moline. Betty was a member of First Lutheran Church, Moline. She enjoyed fishing and loved gardening. She did extensive traveling and camping all over the United States and through Canada. She loved spending time with her grandkids. Shawn was a laborer belonging to the Laborers Local #309, Rock Island. Shawn was involved in Civil War reinactments and was a black guns powder enthusiast. He was a member of the International Medical & Dental Hypnotherapy Association. He owned several mules and enjoyed riding them in local parades and on trailrides. Memorials may be made to First Evangelical Free Church or New Kingdom Trail Riders. Adele was born September 26, 1918 in New Windsor, IL., the daughter of Axel and Augusta (Johnson) Youngberg. She married Harley Hancock on May 22, 1937 in Cambridge, IL. Adele graduated from the Sterling School of Cosmetology, and was a beautician in her own home for several years. Adele was a member of First Evangelical Free Church in Moline where she was a former Sunday school teacher for many years. George William Wallace, 90, died Friday, March 19th, 2004 at home with his wife by his side. Funeral services for George will be at 1:00 p.m., Tuesday, March 23rd at Gospel Mission Temple, 5074 North pine Street, Davenport, Iowa. Visitation will be from 4:00-8:00 p.m. at Esterdahl Mortuary, Ltd., 6601 – 38th Avenue, Moline. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Moline. Memorials may be sent to Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center, University of Iowa, 200 Hawkins Drive, Iowa City, Iowa, 52242-1002 or Gospel Mission Temple. George was born in Muscatine, Iowa on February 10, 1914. He was adopted by his uncle and wife, William Wallace and Malvine Pope Wallace. He attended Davenport schools. He worked at Walgreen Company in Davenport for eight years, and later worked at the Rock Island Arsenal from June 20, 1938 until he retired on December 22, 1978. He became a supervisor in 1954. He married Lillian Noggins Harris on October 29, 1955 in Moline. George was an uncompromising Christian man with genuine integrity. He was very kind, gentle and unselfish. He was an avid reader and a great lover of history, but his greatest love was his family and the feeling was truly mutual. Surviving are his wife, Lillian, son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Vriginie Wallace, Mill Valley, California; a daughter Sarah Wallace Belle and husband Haywood Belle, Iowa City, IA; a daughter Anne Louise Wallace, New York City, NY; one grandchild, Dustin Wallace, a sister Bernice Williams, Muscatine, IA, and a number of nieces and nephews, also many loyal friends. He was preceded in death by 2 brothers and 2 sisters.

He preceded her in death on May 20, 2002. Flora enjoyed playing the organ.
