Jack R. Pierson, 71, of Sherrard, died Friday, August 6, 2004 at Genesis West Medical Center, Davenport. Graveside Services will be 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 14, 2004 at the Sherrard Cemetery. According to Jack’s wishes his body will be cremated. Kirk, Huggins & Esterdahl Funeral Home, Ltd. is assisiting the family. Jack was born April 14, 1933 in Cambridge, Ohio, the son of Edgar Axel and Dorothy Britton Pierson. He married Cassie Hubbard in November of 1955 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. She preceded him in death in October of 1983. He later married Treva (Johnson) Schroeder on August 4, 1984 in Sherrard. Jack was employed at John Deere Plow Planter as a welder, then he was employed at the Montgomery Elevator also a welder. He later worked at Case IH as a foreman. He returned to Montgomery Elevator then later to John Deere Plow Planter as a welder. Later, he was employed by Sherrard Unit #200 School District working in maintenance. He later was a grounds keeper at Rock Island Memorial Park retiring in April of 1998. Jack was a Army veteran serving from 1953-1955. He was a member of First Lutheran Church, Sherrard and volunteered on the Sherrard Fire Department for 20 years. He was a former Sherrard Village Town board member. He was a member of the Moline UAW Local. He enjoyed camping and traveling. SURVIVORS: Wife, Treva Sons: James (Linda) Pierson, Sherrard Scott Pierson, Milan Step Son, Carl (Carla) Derrickson, Torrington, CT 4 grandchildren 2 great grandchildren 5 step grandchildren, Sister: Ruthann (Frank) Korte, Byesville, OH Half Brother, Edward Pierson, Ohio Cousin, Charles (Sharon) Anderson, Yuma, AZ He was preceded by his parents, first wife Cassie, and son Jay Pierson.

Floy B. Calkins, 81 of Orion died August 5, 2004 at Illini Hospital, Silvis. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Monday, August 9, 2004 at Kirk, Huggins & Esterdahl Funeral Home, Ltd. Orion. Visitation will be Sunday from 2-5 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be at National Cemetery, Rock Island with military honors conducted by Orion American Legion Post # 255. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, Orion or Orion American Legion Post # 255. Floy was born May 10, 1923 in Interwald, WI to John B. and Elizabeth A. St. Clair Calkins. He married Cleora Miller on December 24, 1945 in Orion, IL. Floy was a self-employed carpenter contractor for 36 years retiring in 1998. Floy was a member of First Baptist Church, Orion., where he was deacon, a trustee, Sunday school teacher and moderator. He was a WWII Army veteran. He was a member of the Orion American Legion Post #255 where he served as a past post commander, sergeant at arms, a service officer, vice commander and was a member of the honor guard. He was a member of the Orion Senior Citizen Meal Site. He was active in the McCuffy Readers with the Western District Library. SURVIVORS: Wife, Cleora Daughters: Elora (David) Trumper, Las Vegas, NV Valerie (Gailyn) Messersmith, Bark River, MI Karen (Kenneth) Cook, Dallas, GA Sons: Kevin (Carol) Calkins, Effingham, IL Bruce (Laura) Calkins, Davenport, IA 13 grandchildren 27 great grandchildren 3 step grandchildren, Sister: Betty Callahan Loveland, CO He was preceded in death by brothers Irving and Donald and grandson Jamie Calkins.

She married Clarence Manthei on February 3, 1966 in Angleton, TX. Sarah was a real estate agent in several different states. Sarah enjoyed playing cards, her two dogs and spoiling her grandchildren. Per Mary wishes there will be no visitation and there will be a private family graveside service at the Illinois City Cemetery. Mary was born September 9, 1914 in Moline to William W. and Mae Hibner Schutte. She married Leonard R. Holmgren on June 19, 1935 in Moline. He preceded her in death on October 30, 1989. Mary was a secretary for 25 years for Dr. F. Eihl in Moline retiring in 1977. Mary was a member of Moline Gospel Temple. Ida E. Malmen, 91, a resident of Illini Restorative Care, Silvis, formerly of Orion, died Monday August 2, 2004 at Illini Restorative Care, Silvis. Funeral Services will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday August 5, 2004 at Esterdahl Mortuary, Ltd., 6601-38th Ave., Moline, with the Rev. Mike Lawyer officiating. Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be at Rose Lawn Memorial Estate. Memorials may be made to Pathway Hospice or to St. Paul Lutheran Church, Orion. Ida Emma Pohl was born August 27, 1912 in Colby, Wisconsin the daughter of Richard and Augusta Kind Pohl. She worked in the Fifth Avenue building as as elevator operator for 28 years, retiring in 1974. She married Engner Hagberg on February 18, 1929 in Wisconsin. On October 28, 1948 she married Clayton C. Malmen in Milan, IL. They resided in Cape Coral, Florida for 9 years, coming back to Illinois in 1981. He died on January 13, 1995. She was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, Orion. Ida enjoyed time spent with her family, caring for her home, sewing and bingo. She is survived by her children and spouses Lorraine (Robert) Carsell, Silvis, Duane “Sonny” Hagberg, Canton, IL, Kathryn (Robert) Ickes, Coal Valley. Grandchildren Carol Ann (Marc) Gellerman, Bettendorf, John (Debby) Carsell, East Moline, Vicki (Dave) Churchill, Moline, Karen Ickes and Barbara Ickes, both of Moline, and Diane (Pat) Leuck, Orion. Great Grandchildren Dennis Lee (Kelley) McCallum, Rock Island, Aimee Leigh (Jeffrey) Peters, Davenport, Rachel Renee Carsell, Kimberly Jade Carsell, both of Greenville, IL, Benjamin Leuck, Ted Leuck, Sam Leuck, Anne Leuck and Grace Leuck, all of Orion. Four step great grandchildren, Dustin Moen, Rock Island, Douglas (Claudia) Churchill of Davenport, Danielle Churchill of Ames, IA and Christopher Churchill of Moline. Great Great Grandchildren Thomas Marc McCallum, Rock Island, Olivia Anna Peters, Davenport, Emerson Caroline Peters, Davenport. Surviving are sisters Louise Nikkinen, Lake Forest, IL, Margaret Simmons, Tampa, FL, niece Jean Stone, Tampa, sisters-in-law Laura DeHaven, LaHarpe, IL, nephew Donald (Joan) Benedum, Waupaca, WI, many great nieces and great nephews. Preceding her in death are two sisters, Evelyn and Pearl, three brothers Ervin, Herman and his infant brother, Raymond. The family would like to thank Pathway Hospice Care nurse Jean Johnson, Lori Slettin, Health Aide, Orphy Kinkead, Hospice Volunteer and the staff at Illini Restorative Care for their care and concern.

Lois was born July 5, 1923 in Charleston, IL to Charles and Ora Downey Poston. She married Clark G. Kopp on August 3, 1942 in Arnold, MO. He preceded her in death on October 20, 2001. Memorials may be made to First Landmark Missionary Baptist Church or Pathway Hospice. J.W. was born October 3, 1922 in Newport, AR to Thomas Franklin and Lula Belle Swindle Stephens. He married Euna Belle Smith on July 12, 1941 in Rural Newport, AR. J.W. was a welder and grinder for 30 years at John Deere Plow retiring in 1979. After retirement he enjoyed his time farming in Clayton, IL. J.W. became an ordained deacon of his church in September of 1954. He was a charter member of his church and the pastor’s best friend. He loved his church and his church family. He had a large garden and loved his time spent in Clayton, IL. SURVIVORS: Wife Belle, Rock Island Son, Dale (Shirley) McNair Daughter: Wanda (Damon) Pursell 3 grandsons, Mike (Vonda) McNair Greg (Misty) Pursell Chris (Sue) Pursell 2 chosen grandsons, Danny Jones Jackie Jones 2 granddaughters, Tonya (Dean) Wiese Leslie Pursell 2 brothers, Frank (Eva) Stephens, Rock Island Lehman (Bonnie) Stephens, Pleasant Plain, AR 3 sisters, Mary (Ralph) Burgess, Rock Island Barbara (Kenneth) Deaton, Shirley (Gerald) King, Conway, AR 8 great grandchildren, Kassi Pursell Adam McNair Derek Pursell Desiree Wiese Alexis Pursell Alaysia Pursell Damon Pursell Gianna Pursell Many nieces, nephews and chosen grandchildren that call him “grandpa” He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Charles Stephens and two sisters Thelma Bailey and Oneal Deaton.

Leo was born March 3, 1928 in Moline the son of Floyd and Opal Steeple Brown. He married Jacquelyn Little on January 7, 1949 in Rock Island. Leo was employed as an insurance agent and district manager for the John Hancock Insurance Company. He retired in 1985 after 32 years of service. Leo was a member of South Park Presbyterian Church in Rock Island. He was an avid golfer and tennis player. He was a loving father, grandfather and great grandfather. SURVIVORS: His wife, Jacquelyn; daughter, Christine Wakeland; son, Craig Brown; grand daughter, Audra White; great grand daughter Chelsea White. Brother, Barry (Sharon) Brown several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, and 3 brothers, William, Jerry and Donald.

Bobbie was born May 8, 1937 in Washington, IA to Lyle and Grace Fitzgerald Fletcher. She was raised by her grandparents; Jessie and Franklin Fletcher in Crawfordville, IA. She graduated from United Township High School in 1955. She married Clyde Davis on May 8, 1960 in Rock Island. Bobbie worked as an aide at the former East Moline State Hospital and then worked at other various businesses until she went to work to help her husband in his highway contracting with the US Postal Service. Bobbie was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Rock Island. SURVIVORS: Husband, Clyde, Rock Island Son, Michael Davis, Davenport Speical Aunt, Violet Lowe Brighton, IA Aunt, Loris Farrier Sister-in-law, Marilyn Royal Rock Island Half brother, Wade, California Many nieces and nephews including niece, Sally Raingstaff, of VanBuren, MO Great niece She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister Janet. “Rest In Peace My Love”
