E. Yvonne Ellison, age 73 of East Moline, died Thursday, July 29, 2004 at Trinity West Medical Center, Rock Island. A memorial service will be at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, August 2, 2004 at First Presbyterian Church in East Moline, IL. Visitation will be from 9:30 – 11:00. Burial will be at National Cemetery, Rock Island. Esterdahl Mortuary, Ltd. is assisting the family. Yvonne was born February 17, 1931 in Oshkosh, WI the daughter of Wilhelm and Olive Engel. She married James B. Ellison on March 7, 1964 in Erie, IL. Yvonne was employed as a secretary for various businesses. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in East Moline. She was also a Life Master/Life Member of the ACBL. SURVIVORS: Husband, James B. Ellison, East Moline 5 children; Nancy Moon, David Ellison, Mark Robinson, Greg Robinson and Kurt Robinson. 2 step children; Jimmy Ellison and Elaine Bolinger. 4 grandchildren; 3 step grandchildren and 3 step great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, a daughter, Cynthia, a son, Doug and a brother, Bill.

Behrens, Joseph

Joseph H. Behrens, 70 of Moline died July 26, 2004 at Kindred Hospital in Sycamore, IL., after an extended illness. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, July 31, 2004 at Esterdahl Mortuary, Ltd. 6601-38th Ave., Moline. Visitation will be Friday from 3-6 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be at Moline Memorial Park with military honors conducted by Moline American Legion Post # 246. Memorials may be made to American Cancer Society. Joseph was born October 23, 1933 in Moline to Joseph T. and Margaret Miller Behrens. He married Gretchen Burgis on December 7, 1957 in Kitzingen, Germany. She preceded him in death on December 26, 1991. Joseph was a tractor repairman working for Farmall, Rock Island. He later worked at Marley Pump Co., retiring in 1999. Joseph was a US Army Veteran. He was a member of the East End Boulders Club, Moline Vikings, Svithiod Club, and Friends Circle. He enjoyed playing cribbage, and shuffle board. After retirement he enjoyed traveling, watching football, and NASCAR. SURVIVORS: Son, Karl Behrens, Moline, Special friend, Virgina “Ginny” Porter, Moline, Brothers: Marvin Behrens, East Moline Fred Gruss, Peoria He was preceded in death by a brother Gene Miller.

Herman “Frank” Drewes, 78 of Moline died July 20, 2004 at Trinity Medical Center, Rock Island. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Friday, July 23, 2004 at Esterdahl Mortuary, Ltd. 6601-38th Ave., Moline. Visitation will be 6-8 p.m Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be at Greenview Memorial Gardens, East Moline. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the family. Frank was born July 4, 1926 in Sterling, IL to Herman and Sophie Cassens Drewes. He married Katrena Harrelson on May 29, 1949 at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Rock Island. She preceded him in death on July 30, 2003. Frank had been a salesman and later general manager for Harrelson Motors of Moline for 31 years and also a custodian for the Moline school district. Frank was an U.S. Navy veteran. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. SURVIVORS: Daughter: Laurie (Alan) Ford, Rock Island Sons: Jeff (Carol) Drewes, St. Louis, MO Brian Drewes (Linda Gonzalez) , Moline 12 grandchildren 3 step-great grandchildren, Sister: Dorothy (Laverne) Behrendt, Port Byron Sister-in-law, Jan & Stan Woods Moline He was preceded in death by his wife and son Brent Drewes.

Charles E. Irwin, age 84, formerly of Cambridge, died Tuesday, July 20, 2004 in Rockford, IL. Funeral service will be 8:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 24, 2004 at Esterdahl Mortuary, Ltd. 6601-38th Avenue, Moline, IL Vistation will be from 5:00-8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be at Greenview Memorial Gardens, East Moline, IL. Memorials may be made to the family. Charles was born January 16, 1920 in Panburn, Arkansas, the son of Emannuel and Stella Turley Irwin. He married Elizabeth Muller on September 19, 1939 in Missouri. Charles was employed as a carpenter for Larimer & Lundell in Geneseo and also at Triangle Construction in Cambridge. He was a member of the Geneseo Moose Lodge, he also enjoyed fishing, farming and raising animals. SURVIVORS: Wife, Elizabeth Daughters: Donna (Jim) Stoltz, Colona Frances (Sam) Vincent, Monroe Center, IL Connie (Jim) Hill, Orlando, FL Elizabeth (Ron) Greim, Rock Island Marvel (Phil) Sundberg, Eagan, MN Sister Lillian Ruthledge, Wiggins, MS; 19 Grand children; 33 Great Grandchildren and 5 Great Great Grandchildren, He was preceded in death by a son Charles Irwin, Jr., 3 Grandchildren, Wanda Corwin, Lisa Mason, Shawn Swift and 2 sisters and a brother.

Marilyn R. Bess, age 76, of Moline died Thursday, July 15, 2004 at Trinity West Hospital, Rock Island. Funeral service will follow at 7:00 p.m. at Esterdahl Mortuary, Ltd. 6601-38th Avenue, Moline. Burial is in Steedman Cemetery, Steedman, Missouri. Memorials may be made to Eastern Star Home in Macon, IL. Marilyn was born in the beautiful Ozark Mountains on April 9, 1928 in Portland, Missouri, the daughter of Charles and Amanda Lawrence Russell. She graduated from Mokane High School, Mokane, Missouri in 1946 and married Charles Bess on July 26, 1947. Marilyn was a homemaker, traveler, avid crossword puzzle fan and the best apple pie baker in the world. She was a Past Matron of Valley Chapter #274, Order of the Eastern Star, and a member of Elim Covenant Church, Moline. SURVIVORS: include her loving husband of almost 57 years, Charles; three daughters, Yvonne Smith (Milwaukee, WI) , Michelle Kawa (Milwaukee, WI) and Ruth Ann (Michael) Holcomb (Rock Spring, WY) ; 2 grandchildren, Neal and Stephanie Smith; her brother Elbert Lee (Delores) Russell (Crestview, FL) . She was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Charles Wesley Russell. Special thanks to the nursing staff of 4S, Trinity West Hospital, especially to Joan Moroney, social worker, for their care and concern.

Edward Carl Carther, 55, of Moline, died Saturday July 17, 2204 at Trinity West Medical Center, Rock Island, after a lengthy battle with a chronic illness. Funeral Services will be 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, July 21, 2004, at Esterdahl Mortuary, Ltd., 6601-38th Ave., Moline. Visitation will be an hour and a half prior to service time. Burial will be at Riverside Cemetery, Moline. Edward was born August 6, 1948 in Moline, the son of Edward H. and June Anders Carther. He was a graduate of Moline High School where he participated in football, wrestling and track. He attended Black Hawk College and Moline Technical School. Before his illness he worked at International Harvester and the Quad City Airport. He enjoyed athletics and fishing. He left behind a family that loved him. Surviving is his brother, Paul Carther, sister-in-law, Karis and niece, Alexia. His sister, Myrna Earley, niece Jeanna Earley and nephews, Damion Earley, Jim Anders and Tim Johnson. His uncle, Robert Anders and family and aunt Betty Wilson and her family. The Muskeyvalleys, cousins Cheryl Johnson, Curtis Anders and a special niece, Anita Johnson, who was his caregiver. He was preceded in death by his son, Karl Wright, his parents, and grandparents, as well as a host of uncles, aunts and cousins.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 a.m. Friday, July 16, 2004 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Moline. Visitation will be Thursday from 4-7 p.m., at Esterdahl Mortuary, Ltd., 6601-38th Ave., Moline, with a rosary recited at 4 p.m. Burial will be at National Cemetery, Rock Island. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Shirley was born February 28, 1935 in Baltimore, Maryland the daughter of Morris and Marie Kurlik Weiss. She married Thomas Dalton on September 30, 1993. He preceded her in death. Shirley attended the Moline schools. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Moline. Shirley also did volunteer work with the Q.C. AIDS Project. Shirley enjoyed working with hospice and she loved the Chicago Cubs. SURVIVORS: Brother, Lawerance “Larry” Weiss Bettendorf, IA, Sister: Carol Gardener, Bettendorf Son Donald Wolfe, JR. Daughter: Julie (Charlie) Wolfe, Davenport 4 grandchildren Special Friends, Richard and Merle Underwood Many nieces and nephews She was preceded in death by her parents.

Barbara Clayton, 69, of Rock Island, and a long time resident of the Illinois Quad City area, died Wednesday, July 14, 2004 in Rock Island, after a long battle with ovarian cancer. Funeral Services will be1:00 Monday, July 19, 2004 at Esterdahl Mortuary, Ltd., 6601-38th Ave., Moline. Visitation will be from 2-5 Sunday at the funeral home. Burial will be at Rock Island Memorial Park. Barbara was born August 14, 1934 in Long Mount, CO, the daughter of Henry R. and Wanda Bihain Fries. She married Noverta (Randy) Clayton, Jr. on July 12, 1952 in Denver, CO. He preceded her in death in 1980. Barbara was a homemaker. She loved watching t.v. and her cat. But most of all she loved spending time with her family and going out to eat. SURVIVORS: Daughter: Randie Jo, and a very special son-in-law, Ron Anderson, Rock Island Sons: Britt (Pat) Clayton, Bettendorf Daniel (Pam) Clayton, Coal Valley, Grandchildren: Ernest Moon, Jr. William Westfall, Jr. Tammie Jo Anderson Great GrandDaughter: Haley Westfall Step, Grandchildren: Cheri Woodsmall Jamie Trudell 7 Step Great Grandchildren Very Special Friend, Sherry Clayton She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, a sister, and a very special person, Jesse York.

Leonard Kaalberg, age 80 of East Moline passed peacefully from this life into God’s loving hands on July 12, 2004. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Friday at Esterdahl Mortuary, Ltd., 6601-38th Ave., Moline. Burial will be at Greenview Memorial Gardens, East Moline. Memorials may be made to the Child Abuse Council, 525-16th St., Moline, IL, 61265. Leonard was born on July 28, 1923 Nichols, IA, the son of William and Johanna Giesen Kaalberg. He married Mabel Croxton on December 16, 1950 in Rock Island, IL. For 25 years Leonard worked as a repairman for John Deere, retiring in 1980. Leonard was a lifelong member of Christ the King Catholic Church, where he was part of the landscaping crew. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus and a World War II Veteran, serving with the Eighth Armored Division. He was an avid St. Louis Cardinals and Iowa Hawkeye fan, and he enjoyed volunteering at the John Deere Classic. He loved babysitting his grandkids, carpentry and fishing. SURVIVORS: Wife Sons: Dennis (Carol) Kaalberg, East Moline Gary (Cathy) Kaalberg, Viera, FL Ken (Marie) Kaalberg, Rock Island Daughter: Connie (Stephen) Johnson, Monument, CO Sister Mary McAnally, Blakesburg, IA, Grandchildren: Kari, Leonard John II, Kyle, Ryan, Derek, Sara, Jason, Alex Great Grandchildren, Alaina, Phillip, Conner, Hunter, Phoebe Many nieces, nephews, and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, two children, sisters Alydia, Dorothy, and Margret, and brothers John and Joe.
