Leon S. Minckler
CARBONDALE -- Leon S. Minckler, 95, of Carbondale died at 11:10 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2002. He was born May 7, 1906, in Milford, N. Y., but grew up in the small town of Sinclairville in western New York State, where his parents moved in 1912. His respect and love for his parents, Walter and Eva, were evident from his frequent references to them and his childhood with them. He was the oldest of five being the traditional "Big Brother" to Harriet, Earl, Marjorie and Clifford. Dr. Minckler received his higher education through a Ph. D. degree in forestry from the N. Y. State College of Forestry at Syracuse University in 1929. He pursued a career in research with the U. S. Forest Service, which resulted in moves to Asheville, N. C., Buckingham, Va., Blacksburg, Va., and Carbondale, among others. After the death of his first wife, Althea, he married Edith in 1947. Along the way he became affectionately known as "Doc". Doc had a well developed and documented philosophy of life and responsibility. He was a teacher, particularly of science. He taught truths and moral values to his children (and anyone else who would listen). His seven children, Sherwood, Christine, Maxine, William, Jean, Sandra, and David, profited from this exposure and all became thoughtful and productive citizens of the country he loved for both its physical and social foundations. He is survived by his wife and seven children, as well as numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Although a devoted father, Doc was also a dedicated professional research forester and professor, well known to his colleagues for his controversial views and dogged determination. His research showed that selective cutting practices, with due emphasis on environmental values, was the way to sustained productivity and protection of forest values. He was the leading authority on the management of southern hardwood forests. Doc was an ecologist before most knew the meaning of the word. With more than 175 scientific papers published, (more than, anyone else in the U. S. Forest Service), he remained professionally productive into his 90's, close to 70 years. In addition to his 33 year career with the U. S. Forest Service, Dr. Minckler taught at Virginia Polytechnic Institute, State College of Forestry at Syracuse University, University of Michigan, and Southern Illinois University. He was a member of numerous professional societies, associations and boards, i. e. Society of American Foresters, National Agricultural Research and Extension Users Advisory Board, etc. He authored the book "Woodland Ecology," now in its fifth printing. This is only a glimpse of his contributions to his family, friends, profession and country. Many of us will echo the words of a colleague of his, "I miss Doc Minckler. " Donations may be made to the Leon S. Minckler Memorial Scholarship in Forestry, Southern Illinois University Foundation, Carbondale, IL 62901. Memorial services will be at 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 5, 2002, at Crain Funeral Home Pleasant Grove Chapel.
