Clarence Wendell Smoot
MARION -- Clarence Wendell Smoot, 80, passed away Saturday, Dec. 29, 2001, at 11 p.m. at Marion Veterans Affairs Medical Center. Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 3, 2002 in Mitchell-Hughes Funeral Home in Marion. Burial will be at Rose Hill Cemetery in Marion, with graveside military rites accorded by VFW Post No. 1301 of Marion. Visitation will be at the funeral home Wednesday evening from 5 until 9 p.m. Clarence was born Jan. 12, 1921, in Marion to Clarence and Flossie (Proctor) Smoot. They preceded him in death. He married Florence (Fisher) in Jackson, Mo. on July 12, 1942. She survives in Marion. Clarence was a veteran of World War II and a member of VFW Post No. 1301 of Marion; he also attended Second Baptist Church in Marion. Other survivors are his son and daughter-in-law, William and Debbie Smoot of Herrin; daughter and son-in-law, Mary Kathy and Sam Brookhouse of Marion; grandchildren, Wendy Livley, Rachael Smoot, Tracy Brookhouse, and John Smoot; sister and brother-in-law, Vera and Dennis Stephens of Marion. Preceding him in death are his parents and two brothers James and Loren Smoot.

Minnie J. Parcell
JONESBORO -- Minnie J. Parcell, daughter of Jefferson E. and Clara Weiss Slicker, was born in Jonesboro on July 8, 1916, and passed away Sunday, Dec. 30, 2001, at the Jonesboro, Healthcare Center at the age of 85. Mrs. Parcell was united in marriage to Charles F. Chuck Parcell on Sept. 14, 1934. She was preceded in death by Mr. Parcell on Sept. 6, 1989. She was also preceded in death by her parents, three sisters and one brother. Mrs. Parcell worked as a home healthcare giver for several people in this area. She was a life-long member of the Jonesboro Methodist Church. Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Celia and Duane Barker of Georgetown; two sons and daughters-in-law, Charles J. and Sarah Parcell of Mount Prospect and Samuel B. and Jo Ann Parcell of Lexington, N. C.; three grandchildren; two great grandchildren; and nieces and nephews. Graveside funeral services will be conducted at 11 am. Thursday, Jan. 3, 2002, with the Rev. John Prather officiating. Interment will be in the Jonesboro Cemetery. Friends may call from 5 until 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2002, at the chapel of Hileman & Parr Funeral Services.

Faye M. Klutts
MARION -- Faye M. Klutts, 85, passed away at Fountain Nursing Home in Marion at 1:45 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 29, 2001. She was born March 8, 1916 in Colp to Ed T. Harris and Addie Mae(Gossett) Harris. They preceded her in death. Faye married Melvin L. Hodson in Jackson, Mo. on Oct. 22, 1935, and he passed away in 1975. She married Robert H. Klutts in Marion on July 7, 1977, and he passed away in 1979. She was a homemaker and of Apostolic faith. Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Jerry Dale and Bonnie Hodson of Placentia, Calif., Leslie and Pauline Hodson of Pittsburg; one daughter and son-in-law, Jeanette and Larry W. Adams of Marion; six grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and several step-grandchildren. Preceding her in death are one infant son, four brothers and one sister. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, January 2, 2002, at Mitchell-Hughes funeral home, with the Rev. Danny Norman officiating. Burial will follow at Freedom Cemetery south of Marion. Visitation will be Wednesday from 12:00 p.m. till time of the service.

Lewis Evers
BELKNAP -- Lewis "Cub" Evers, 59, died at 11:45 a.m. Monday, Dec. 31, 2001, in St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau, Mo. Arrangements are incomplete at the Wilson Funeral Home in Karnak.

Robert Wilson
HARRISBURG -- Robert Wilson, 75, of Evansville, Ind. formerly of Harrisburg, died at 4 p.m. Monday, Dec. 31, 2001, in Core Nursing and Rehab Center in Evansville. Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 3, 2001, at Sunset Lawn Cemetery, with the Rev. George Schmink officiating. There will be no visitation. Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church of Harrisburg. Gaskins Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Mr. Wilson worked as an underwriter for Chartered Life. He was a member of First United Methodist Church of Harrisburg. He was born on in Harrisburg on Jan. 2, 1926, to Arthur and Alma Reeces Wilson He married Phyllis Elaine Taylor on June 1, 1947. She preceded him in death on Aug. 13, 1996. Survivors include his son, Robert Bradford "Brad" Wilson of Dallas, Texas; two daughters and son-in-law, Randi W. Smith of Marion, Kim and Tom Cheek of Evansville, Ind.; nine grandchildren, Damon T. Smith of Springfield, K. Chase Smith of Evansville, Ind, Seth T. Cheek of Evansville, Ind., Regan T. Cheek of Champaign, Garth T. Cheek and Canyon T. Cheek, both of Evansville, Ind., Renee Beadle of Atlanta, Ga., Kelly Vogt of Kansas City, Mo., Derek Wilson of Kansas City, Mo.; and seven great-grandchildren.

Bessie Lee Burklow
HARRISBURG -- Bessie Lee Burklow, 93, died at 4 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 30, 2001, in Harrisburg Medical Center. Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday Jan. 1, 2002, at Cottage Grove Cemetery with the Rev. Dr. Rachel Berry officiating. The will be no visitation. Gaskins Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Mrs. Burklow was a clerk for Polk's Shoe Store and a member of McKinley Avenue Baptist Church. She was born on Feb. 21, 1908, in Equality to James and Eva (Rude) Yates. She married Clifford Burklow on June 7, 1924. He preceded her in death on Aug. 2, 1963. Survivors include a son and daughter in law, Curtis (Marilyn) Burklow of Harrisburg; granddaughter, Kimberly Black and husband, Dr. Randall Black of Murray, Ky.; grandson, Bradley Burklow and wife, Patti of Harrisburg; great-grandchildren, Megan Black, Bradley Black, Madison Burklow and Morgan Burklow; and one sister, Rachel Wargel of Equality. Her parents, two sisters and five brothers also preceded her in death.

Stephen 'Rainman' L. Rains
MURPHYSBORO -- Stephen "Rainman" L. Rains, 47, died at 3:55 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 30, 2001, at his home. Mr. Rains was born Feb. 28, 1954, in Granite City, to Earl and Wilma (Dotson) Rains. He was a logger. He was married to Wanda Baumgartner. Survivors include his wife; three sons, Jesse L. Rains of Pomona, Joshua S. Rains of Payneville, Ky., and Zackary E. Rains of Payneville, Ky.; one daughter, Dalton of Murphysboro; one grandson, Codylee Earl Rains of Jasper, Mo.; his parents of Murphysboro; three brothers, Daniel Rains of Cobden, Kenneth Rains and his wife, Brenda, of Jonesboro and Tim Rains and his wife, Micki of Christopher; one sister, Teri Bell and her husband, Mike, of Pomona; three nieces; four nephews and one great-niece. He was preceded in death by his grandparents., Services will be at 1 p. . Thursday at Pettett Funeral Home, with burial in Walker Hill Cemetery in Grand Tower. Friends may call from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Grace Stevenson
JACOB -- Grace Stevenson, 88 years, 24 days, of Downey, Calif., formerly of Jacob, died Dec. 28, 2001, in Downey. Mrs. Stevenson was born Dec. 4, 1913, in Jacob to Fred L. and Edna (Grosvenor) Saul. She married Duwaine Stevenson, who preceded her in death. Survivors include one son, Dennis Stevenson of California; two brothers, Kenneth Saul of Ava and Cecil Saul of Loneview, Texas; and three sisters, Anna Clendenin of Murphysboro, Thelma Slaybaugh of Murphysboro and Edna Mae Todd of Fredericksburg, Va. She also was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Herbert Saul. Services and cremation will take place in California. Wilson's Funeral Home in Ava provided the information for this obituary.

Lenard Street
VIENNA -- Lenard "Len" Street, 70, died at 10 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 30, 2001, at his home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Paul's Catholic Church in Vienna. Father Jose Ancheril and Father Edward Balestrieri will concelebrate the mass. Burial will be in the Vienna Fraternal Cemetery. Friends may call after 6 p.m. today at the Bailey Funeral Home. A prayer service will be conducted at 8:30 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Paul's Catholic Church, Building Fund, 2020 State Route 146 East, Vienna, IL 62995; VNA/TIP Hospice, 1032 N. Market St., Marion, IL 62959, or to the Vienna First Baptist Church, food pantry program, P. O. Box 727, Vienna, IL 62995. Memorial envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Vada York
ANNA -- Vada Maxine York, 74, died at 6:25 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 30, 2001, in Memorial Hospital of Carbondale. Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 5, 2002, at the Dutch Ridge Cemetery, south of Murphysboro with the Rev. James Stamp officiating. Interment will be in the Dutch Ridge Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 until 8 p.m. Friday at Lutz and Rendleman Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the Shriners Children's Hospital in St. Louis, Mo.

Marion Casper
METROPOLIS -- Marion Gilbert "Gib" Casper, 63, died at 11:35 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 30, 2001, in the Marion Veterans Adminsitration Medical Center. Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Metropolis Memorial Gardens, with the Rev. Louis Brinker officiating. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today, Jan. 1, in Miller Funeral Home in Metropolis. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 805 W. DeYoung St., Marion, IL 62959.

Daisy Harris
VILLA RIDGE -- Daisy O. Harris, 81, died at 7:49 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 27, 2001, in Southeast Missouri Hospital in Cape Girardeau, Mo. Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the First Missionary Baptist Church in Mound City. Burial will be in Beech Grove Cemetery in Mounds, with the Rev. James Dowell officiating. Friends may call from 11 a.m. until time of services Wednesday at the church. Massie Funeral Home in Cairo is in charge of arrangements.

Ruth Steffers
DU QUOIN -- Ruth L. Steffers, 79, died at 9:47 a.m. Monday, Dec. 31, 2001, in Memorial Hospital of Carbondale. Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Searby Funeral Home, with the Rev. Jerry Dunn officiating. Cremation services will follow the funeral. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Jerry Waddell
MOUNT VERNON -- Jerry Donald Waddell, 58, formerly of Mount Vernon, died at 10:03 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 22, 2001, in Memorial Hospital in Jacksonville, Fla. Services and visitation were held on Sunday in Hughey Funeral Home. The Rev. Kenneth Holland officiated.

Barbara Mitchell
MCLEANSBORO -- Barbara Jean Mitchell, 54, of Norris City, formerly of McLeansboro, died at 4:05 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 30, 2001. Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Gholson Funeral Home. Burial will be in Hopewell Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 until 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Goldie Smith
MCLEANSBORO -- Goldie Mae Smith, 94, died at 5:30 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 30, 2001, in Enfield Health Care Center. Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Gholson Funeral Home. Burial will be in the IOOF Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the time of services Wednesday at the funeral home.

Opal Etherton
DU QUOIN -- Opal Etherton, 91, died at 2:10 a.m. Sunday. Dec. 30, 2001, in Du Quoin. Arrangements are incomplete at Neal-MCClure Funeral Home.

Ralph Prusacki
DU QUOIN -- Ralph Prusacki, 79, passed away at 12:20 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 7, 2002, at his residence from effects of ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease). Ralph was a retired farmer and dock expediter for the U. S. Postal Service. He was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Du Quoin, charter member of the Knights of Columbus # 4476, American Legion Post 647, lifetime member of Du Quoin VFW Post 513, NARFE-Carbondale branch, and the Perry County Farm Bureau. Ralph was a US Navy veteran of W. W. II. He was born June 10, 1923, at St. Louis, Mo., the son of Mike S. and Rose E. (Nikrant) Prusacki. He married Dorothy M. Liszewski on Oct. 5, 1946, at the St. Charles Church in Du Bois and she survives. He is survived by his wife of Du Quoin; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Joseph Prusacki and wife, Carla, of Sterling, Va. and Karl Prusacki of Du Quoin; two daughters and sons-in-law, Joan Guciardo and husband, Jack, of Belleville and Mary Lynn Szperra and husband, Jim, of Du Bois; a daughter-in-law, Cyrilla Prusacki of Du Quoin; four grandchildren, Elizabeth Szperra of Du Bois and Renee, Dana, and Marc Prusacki all of Du Quoin; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Michael R. Prusacki and wife, Rosalea, of Du Quoin and Leon Prusacki and wife, Connie, of Tamaroa; a sister, Bernice Nowakowski of Tamaroa; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Randall Prusacki; a sister, Laverne Kabat; and two brothers-in-law, Arthur Kabat and Tom Nowakowski. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, with Msgr. Harry Jerome officiating. Interment will be in the Sacred Heart Cemetery at Du Quoin. military graveside rites will be conducted by the Du Quoin VFW Post 513. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin. The Rosary will be recited at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Friends may make memorials to the ALS Association, Masses or to the Sacred Heart Cemetery and memorials will be accepted at the funeral home.

Danny Ray 'Shag' Carner
JOHNSTON CITY -- Danny Ray "Shag" Carner, 55, died at 3:10 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2002, in Pompano Beach, Fla. Mr. Carner was born on Dec. 25, 1946 in Herrin, the son of Johnny C. and Patricia J. (Lee) Carner. The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 10, 2002, at the Murman & Wilson Funeral Home in Johnston City, with Rev. Don Colson officiating. Interment will be in the Lakeview Cemetery. Friends may call after 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Graveside military rites will be conducted by the Marion V. F. W. Memorials may be made to the funeral home. He is survived by one son, John P. Carner and his wife Sharon of West Frankfort; three daughters, Dana M. Taylor and her husband Richard of Marion, Denise L. Smith and her husband Chad of Johnston City, and Danica L. R. Carner at the home of her mother Debbie Carner of West Frankfort; one stepson, William J. Morris of West Frankfort; six grandchildren, Dusty and Autumn Taylor, Kimberly Bennett, Jessica and Darin Carner, and Jaden Smith; one brother, Jerry Carner and his wife Janet of Evansville, Ind.; two nieces, one nephew, one great nephew, and several cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents. Mr. Carner was a truck driver for J. C. Enterprise, and had previous worked as a coal miner at Old Ben No. 21 and as a welder at Caterpillar in Joliet. He was a veteran of the Navy, as well as a member of the American Legion in Benton and a former member of the Storm Riders. He will be sadly missed by his family.

Barbara Ruth Robinson Smith
EFFINGHAM -- Barbara Ruth (Robinson) Smith, 67, formerly of Simpson, died at 9 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 7, 2002 at the Lakeland Healthcare Center in Effingham. Barbara was born June 12, 1935 in the Simpson community of Johnson County, Ill. She was the daughter of Leo Robinson and Hazel (Bradley) Robinson. Barbara was united in marriage to Bobby L. Smith, formerly of Tunnel Hill, on Sept. 15 1953 at Ft. Smith, Ark. He survives. Other survivors include five children, Ricky Lee Smith and his wife Belinda K. (Robinson) Smith of Indianapolis, Ind., John R. Smith of Effingham, Tammy S. Smith-Choate and her husband Larry Allen Choate of Watson, Ill., David Leo Smith of Effingham, and Lori Samantha Smith of Effingham; nine grandchildren, Chad Hybarger, Bobby Lee Smith II, Brandy Michelle Smith, Ashley Smith, Damon Smith, Natalie Smith, Melissa Hall, Christy Choate, and Erica Hybarger; seven great-grandchildren, Courtney Hybarger, Cassie Brown, Brandon Hybarger, Kerri Hybarger, Jamison Smith, Jac-ci Smith, and Joseph Smith; several nieces and nephews; one uncle, Clyde Robinson and his wife Susie of Simpson; and one brother, James Jackson Robinson. Barbara was a homemaker. She was a former member of the Vienna Assembly of God Church and had more recently affiliated with the Effingham Assembly of God Church. Barbara enjoyed sewing, knitting, and spending time with her family. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 10, 2002 at the Gilead Church near Simpson. Burial will be in the Gilead Cemetery. Friends may call from 5-9 p.m. Friday evening, Aug. 9, 2002 at Bailey Funeral Home in Vienna, and from noon-1 p.m. Saturday at Gilead Church, prior to the funeral service. Memorials may be made to the Gilead Church, c/o Steve Kerley, 260 Gum Springs Rd., Simpson, IL 62985.

Sarah Poe
MARION -- Sarah Poe, 80, went to join our Lord at 12:15 p.m. Wednesday, August 7, 2002 at Memorial Hospital of Carbondale. Sarah was born Aug. 26, 1921, to the late Ralph & Josephine (Partington) Dameron, who both preceded her in death. Sarah had one brother, Leeburn Dameron who preceded her in death. One sister Rosemary Rice survives her. Sarah was wed to the late Dick Poe on December 31, 1939. Together they had two children, Julia Ann (Poe) Endres and Richard Poe. Dick and Sarah also gave life to Williamson County Speedway from 1968-1977 and Poe's Skate Inn from 1957-1978 until the passing of her late husband Dick in 1977. Survivors include a sister, Rosemary Rice; a brother in law & sister-in-law, Wedge and Irene Poe; daughter & son-in-law, Julia and Gary Endres; a son, Richard Poe; five grandchildren, Joann and Ralph McKinney, Toni and David Deaton, Tracy Endres Hunziker, Angie and Billy Colson, and Todd and Susan Poe; eight great-grandchildren, Tyson Deaton, Chris and Matt McKinney, Jordan Hunziker, B. J., Zachary and Rachael Colson, and Tommy Poe; as well as many cousins, nieces and nephews. She was Grandma Sarah to all the children who walked through her backdoor. Please help her family celebrate her life, as visitation services will be from 11:00 a.m. until time of funeral service at 1 p.m. Saturday at Mitchell-Hughes Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Murdale Gardens of Memory at Murphysboro, Illinois with Rev. Ronald Walls officiating. Pallbearers include Chris and Matt McKinney, Billy and Zachary Colson, David Deaton, and Bruce and Brad Lowe.
