DU QUOIN -- Margaret M. Green, 76, died at 7:15 a.m. Tuesday, Aug., 6, 2002, at home. Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday in Liberty Church, with the Revs. Steve Quinn and Lon McPherson officiating. Burial will be in IOOF Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday at the church. Memorials may be made to the Du Quoin Dialysis Center or the American Diabetes. Association. Neal-McClure Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Charlene Bragg
CARBONDALE -- Charlene Bragg, born Alice Charlene Ellis, 93, passed away at home on Aug. 5, 2002, surrounded by her children. She was born Jan. 10, 1909, in Anna, the first child of Charles Earl and Myrtle Helen (Brown) Ellis. She was united in marriage May 15, 1929, in West Vienna (Boles), to Earl Bragg, a well-known local cement contractor. He died Oct. 26, 1985, after 56 years of marriage. She leaves behind those who meant most to her in her life, her children: two daughters, Patricia Janet Goodman of Carbondale, and Rita Joan and husband, Dick, Cannon of Carbondale; a son Michael Earl and wife, Kathleen, Bragg of St. Charles, Mo.; Patricia's children, Gregg Goodman of Swansea, Jeffrey and wife, Phyllis, Goodman of Loveland, Ohio, Laura Goodman of Alpharetta, Ga., and Lynne and husband, Paul, Harren of Marietta, Ga.; Rita's children, Sherry and husband, Bob, Evans of St. Charles, Cathy and husband, John, Williams of Carbbondale, Mark and wife, Kristine, Cannon of Riverside, Calif., Patrick and wife, Brenda, Cannon of North Charleston, S. C., Michael's children, Jon Bragg of Carbondale and Carrie-Anne and husband, Henry, Gomez of Kennesaw, Ga.; 21 great grandchildren; and two great grandchildren. Survivors also include her sisters, Phyllis Imhoff, Jean Harris, and Peggy Mills; and a brother, Gerald, all of Carbondale. Her parents; and brothers, Calvin, Robert, and John Ellis, all preceded her in death. Mrs. Bragg was a long time and faithful member of University Baptist Church. Her funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Crain Funeral Home Pleasant Grove Chapel, where she will be buried beside her husband in Pleasant Grove Memorial Park. Robert Goepfert, associate pastor emeritus of University Baptist Church, will officiate. Visitation will be one hour before the service. Memorials may be made to the University Baptist Church or VNA/TIP Hospice, in care of the Chapel. Envelopes are available at the Chapel.

Donald Wayne Koch
AVA-- Donald Wayne Koch, 56, died at 10:40 a.m. Monday, Aug. 5, 2002 at home. He was born Tuesday, Jan. 15, 1946, the son of Herman W. and Wilma (Zang) Koch in Ava. Survivors include three brothers and their wives, Delbert (Sandra) Koch of Steeleville, Wilbert (Barbara) Koch of Steeleville and Ronald (Dot) Koch of Ava and one sister and her husband, Marilyn (Fred) Kunde of St. Louis Park, Minn. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Darlene Winters. Mr. Koch was a farm laborer. He was a veteran of the U. S. Air Force during the Vietnam conflict. . He was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church in West Point, Ill. He was a member of the BBK American Legion Post No. 480 in Steeleville. An American Legion Service will be at 8 p.m. today, Wednesday, Aug. 7, 2002 at Wilson's Funeral Home in Campbell Hill. Friends may visit Wilson's Funeral Home after 6 p.m. today and on Thursday from 7:30 a.m. until the hour of service. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 8, 2002 in Wilson's Funeral Home in Campbell Hill, with Rev. Tim Zechiel officiating. He will be buried at the Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery in West Point. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Rosamond Lucille Widick
CARTERVILLE -- Rosamond Lucille Widick, 83, of Franklin, Ky., and formerly of Carterville, died Monday, Aug. 5, 2002, in Portland, Tenn. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Booker- Gilbert Funeral Home in Franklin, with Dr. Bob Sutton officiating. A graveside service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Thursday at East Lawn Cemetery in Herrin, with the Dr. Noel Taylor officiating. Visitation will be held from 1 to 2 p.m. Thursday at Riggin-Pillatsch Funeral Home in Carterville. A native of Carterville, she was born Dec. 5, 1918, to the late Clifton Henderson and the late Ethel Taylor Henderson. Mrs. Widick was a member of the Franklin First Baptist Church, where she started the nursery school and kindergarten, and then served as the director for 9 years. Mrs Widick was a pastor's wife for fifty years, a homemaker, teacher, and member of the Lake Springs Homemakers Club, AARP, and Sunday school. She is survived by her husband, Hugh Widick, of Franklin; two sons Richard Lee Widick of Nashville, Tenn., and Randall Widick of Trinity, Ala.; one daughter, Linda Vincent of Gallatin, Tenn.; one sister, Lola Evans of Carterville; a sister-in-law, Irene Henderson Robinson of Carterville; and four grandchildren, Casey Vincent of Westmoreland, Tenn., Amanda Vincent of Gallatin, Tenn., Holly Widick and Rebecca Ann Widick, both of Trinity, Ala. Her parents, and one brother, Lloyd Henderson, preceded her in death.

Betty Jo Kerley
VIENNA -- Betty Jo Kerley, 67, died at 8:10 p.m. August 4, 2002, at her home. She was born March 7, 1935, in Gallatin County, the daughter of Loren Tucker and Mae (Clark) Tucker-Lane. Betty was united in marriage to Otis E. Kerley on March 29, 1952, in the Flatwoods Community in Johnson County. He survives. In addition to her husband , Betty is survived by her mother Mae Lane of Ridgway; two daughters, Patricia A. and David Vaughn of Belknap and Teresa and David Hill of Karnak; two sons, Everett Kerley of Simpson and Leo and Teri Kerley of Vienna; eight grandchildren, Joy and Ted Beggs, Sara Vaughn, Seth Vaughn, Matt and Tracy Kerley, Kenneth Kerley, Jacob and Jennifer Kerley, Daniel Kerley and Michael Hill; two great grandsons, Nathan Kerley and Tanner Kerley; three brothers, Bill Lane of Golconda, Roy Lane of Texas and Mack Lane of Eldorado; three sisters, Melva Chapman of Ridgway, Della Price of the Karbers Ridge community (Hardin County), and Josie Darter of Marion; several nieces, nephews, other relatives and many dear friends. In addition to her father, Betty was preceded in death by a brother, Larry Lane, and infant brother and an infant sister; and step-father, Willie Lane. Betty was a homemaker. She had worked at the Florsheim Shoe Factory in Anna. She was also employed by Olin-Matheson Corp. and had worked as a dietitian at Hillview Health Care in Vienna. Betty was a member of the Belknap Pentecostal Church. She enjoyed flower gardening and crocheting. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, August 8, at Bailey Funeral Home in Vienna, with Rev. Kenneth Capps officiating. Burial will be in the Rock Springs Cemetery near Simpson. Visitation will be after 6 p.m. Wednesday, August 7, at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Rock Springs Cemetery c/o Euel Sharp, Rock Springs Road, Simpson, IL 62985 or to Lourdes Hospice, 616 Market St., Metropolis, IL 62960. Memorial envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Aida Pagano
HERRIN -- Aida Pagano, 89, died at 3:38 p. m., Sunday, Aug. 4, 2002, at the Park Health Care Center in Herrin. Aida was born Sept. 11, 1912, in St. Louis, Mo., to Joseph & Amalia (Capra) Pagano. She was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Herrin. She retired after working as a sales clerk at Sohns Clothing Store and was the store manager at Kays Dress Shop for over 35 years. She is survived by two brothers, Richard Pagano of St. Louis and Romo Pagano; several nieces and nephews, Lisa Boyer and husband, Denny, of Huntsville, Ala., Amalia Runkel of Newhall, Calif., Sebastian Pagano and wife, Helen, of West Frankfort, Carla and husband, David Hays, Mark Pagano and wife, Lisa, of Indiana, Carol Vaughn and husband, Steve, Scot Pagano and wife, Rhonda, of West Palm Beach, Flor., Jim Gibbens of Texas, Dennis Gibbens and wife, Lois, of Carterville, and Melody Gibbens of Herrin; several great nieces and great nephews; and several cousins, Frances Schaubert of Salem, Mary Branca, Mary Pisoni of St. Louis, Tony Pagano of St. Louis, Ray Pagano of St. Louis, Tom Miano of St. Louis, Carol Goshen of Dupo, Frank Schaubert of Salem, John Branca, Jr. of Tuscola, Rita Leaky of Austin, Texas, Christine Mattingly of Herrin, and Pat Gibbens of New Orleans, La. She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Raymond Pagano; step mother, Mary Pagano; sister in law, Josephine Pagano; great nephew, Joey Pagano; and a half sister, Mary Gibbens. Funeral services will be will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Johnson Hughes Funeral Home, with Msgr. Ken Schaefer officiating. Burial will follow at San Carlo Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. A prayer service will begin at 6 p.m. Memorials may be made to the San Carlo Cemetery Fund.

Ruby Opal Belcher
HERRIN -- Ruby Opal Belcher, 96, died at 9 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2002, at Park Avenue Health Care Home. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, at Van Natta Funeral Home, with the Rev. Robert Jilek officiating. Burial will be in Herrin Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. She was born June 21, 1906, in Wolf Creek, the daughter of James Clinton and Bethany Caroline (Trull) Norris. She married Earl Thomas Belcher. He preceded her in death. Ruby was an office clerk at Caterpiller. She was a member of Herrin First United Methodist Church, where she organized a Willing Workers quilting class. She was a member of White Shrine; a former Worthy Matron of Eastern Star in Minoka, Rosiclare, and Herrin; a former member of Herrin Women's Club; a former member of Home Extension of Ballard Co. And Williamson Co.; and a former member of Herrin Garden Club. She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, James and Beverlye Belcher of Wickliffe, Ky.; two daughters, Miriam Messina and Rebekah Jewell McKee, both of Kelseyville, Calif.; nine grandchildren; 22 great grandchildren; seven great-great grandchildren; a special daughter, Minnie Lovelace; and she was a special mom to Edgar Addison and Evelyn Addison Woodhouse; and special friends, Jim and Jeanette Sollami of Herrin. She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; a son, Earl Thomas Belcher, Jr.; a daughter, Helen Jean Ridgway; a grandchild; and a great grandchild.

HERRIN -- Pearl Podnar, 93, died Monday, Aug. 5, 2002 at Park Avenue Health Care Home. Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. today, Wednesday, Aug. 7, 2002 at Herrin City Cemetery with Rev. Don Colson officiating.

Stanley Edward Benzek
JOHNSTON CITY -- Stanley Edward Benzek, 79, died at 8:30 a.m. Monday August 5, 2002, at Cardinal Health Care in Energy. Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, August 7, 2002, at St. Paul's Catholic Church in Johnston City, with Msgr. Ken Schaefer officiating. Burial will be in Lakeview Cemetery in Johnston City. Visitation will be after 9 a. m., Wednesday, August 7, 2002, at the church. Murman and Wilson Funeral Home of Johnston City is in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Paul's Parish Center Building Fund, envelopes available at the church. Stanley was born May 6, 1923, in Johnston City, the son of Thomas and Angeline (Kruzich) Benzek. He was married to Blanquetta who preceded him in death. He attended Johnston City High School and graduated in 1941. He was employed by Sunbeam Corporation and retired from Barber-Greene. He was a member of St. Paul's Catholic Church of Johnston City. He is survived by three sisters, Agnes Benzek, Barbara Benzek, Helen Klempin and husband Mike, all of Johnston City; four nephews, Mike Klempin Jr., Tom Klempin of Reynoldsburg, Ohio, Steve Benzek of Arlington, Va., Matthew Benzek of Madison, Ala.; two nieces, Janet McGann of Plantation, Fla., Diane Benzek of Decatur; step-daughter Myrna Hanley of Ariz.; step-granddaughter, Vientta DeLeon and husband Paul of Oswego; step-great grandchildren, Bridget, Ashley, and Tiffany and her daughter Allysa. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Louis Benzek, and sister-in-law, Joann Benzek.

Bernard L. 'Barney' Junger
ELLIS GROVE -- Bernard L. "Barney" Junger, 70, died Sunday, Aug. 4, 2002, at his home. Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Mary Catholic Church in Ellis Grove, with Deacon Al DuBois officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary Catholic Cemetery in Chester, with military graveside services by VFW Post 3553. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and from 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. Thursday at Welge-Pechacek Funeral Home in Chester. Memorials may be made to St. Mary Catholic Church in Ellis Grove, or the Masses. He was a construction laborer and a farmer. He was a Korean War veteran. Barney was born to the late Charles Joseph and Frances (Gaertner) Junger on March 2, 1932, at Fort Gage. He never married. He is survived by two sisters, Mary Meyer and Elizabeth Roche; and several nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Charles and Peter Junger; one sister, Ruth (Boot) Roche; and one nephew, Gene Meyer.

Slavka 'Sadie' E. Cleary
JOHNSTON CITY -- Slavka "Sadie" E. Cleary, 87, of Washington, Ill., died at 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 5, 2002, at her son's home in Tomahawk, Wis. A funeral mass will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 9, 2002 at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Washington. The Rev. Msgr. James J. Swaner will officiate. Visitation will be from 10-11 a.m. Friday at the church. Additional visitation will be from 10-11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 10, 2002, at St. Paul's Catholic Church in Johnston City, where a rosary will be said at 11 a.m. Burial will follow at Lakeview Cemetery in Johnston City. Deiters Funeral Home in Washington is in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be made to St. Patrick's Catholic Church or to the Washington Rescue Squad.
