MURPHYSBORO -- Dollie L. Freeman, 67, died at 11:43 p.m. Friday, Oct. 18, 2002, in Carbondale. Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Walker Funeral Home in Carbondale, with the Rev. Everett Freeman officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery in Makanda. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Ms. Freeman was born May 18, 1935, in Murphysboro to Everett and Nora Morris Freeman. She was an insurance secretary for the Hiens Agency in Murphysboro. Survivors include one brother and sister-in-law, Everett and Brenda Freeman of Carbondale; two sisters, Donna Ridings of Murphysboro and Lois Weinstein of Peoria; five nieces, Debbie Da Rosa and her husband, Ron, Tammy Wolf and her husband, Russel, Robin Maynard and her husband, David, Rebecca Batdorf and her husband, Michael, and Laurie Schaber; two nephews, Richard Freeman and Lawrence Reames; nine great nephews, Jeremy Freeman, Brandon Hill, Nicholas Hill, David Maynard Jr., William Reames, Johnathon Shaber, Aaron Batdorf, Christopher Batdorf and Travis Drone; five great nieces, Nikki Freeman, Brittney Reames, Angela Reames, Allison Schaber, and Sarah Da Rosa; and two sisters, Donna Ridings and Lois Weinstein. She was preceded in death by her parents. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes. Association, 2580 Federal Drive, Suite 403, Decatur, IL 62526.

Martha Jenkins
DU QUOIN -- Martha Eloine Jenkins, 83, of Edwardsville, formerly of Du Quoin, died at 12:52 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 19, 2002, at Anderson Hospital in Maryville. Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Neal-McClure Funeral Home, with the Revs. Bob Dickerson, Jim Donahue and Dale Clemens officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday and from 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to American Lung Association and American Heart Association.

Fred Rainbolt
VIENNA -- Fred Ray Rainbolt, 86, born July 21, 1916, found peace Oct. 16, 2002. The son of James Turner Rainbolt and Hailey Jane Rainbolt, he is survived by his wife, Mary Alice Rainbolt, daughter of Noah and Sarah Fairless. He is also survived by his sister, Della Miller of Kankakee and children, Jerry R. Rainbolt of Auburn, Calif., Lawrence E. Rainbolt of St. Louis, Mo., Donna J. Brown of Bourbonnais, Mary Susan Neal of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., Marla L. Tatman of Lake Worth, Fla. and Debra K. Massey of Gilbert, Ariz., as well as nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by brothers, Willie, Cecil, Ted and Gene and sisters, Daisy Anderson and Minnie Campbell. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 25, 2002 in the Taylor Methodist Church in Vienna. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the American Cancer Society.

Thomas F. 'Tom' Story
METROPOLIS -- Thomas F. "Tom" Story, 61, passed away at 5:50 a. m., Saturday, Oct. 19, 2002, at his home. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Aikins-Farmer Funeral, with the Rev. Tony Wayne Harris officiating. Burial will be in Metropolis Memorial Gardens. American Legion and V. F. W will conduct military rites. Visitation will be for 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Memorials may be given to the American Cancer Society, c/o Joann Fletcher, 2707 N. Ave., Metropolis, Ill., 62960. Tom operated the Fortress Steak House for 28 years. He was a Veteran of the Army. Tom is survived by his wife of 40 years, Gloria; daughter, Tammy Story of Paducah, Ky.; her father and stepmother, Willard and Clara Story of Sebewaing, Mich.; five sisters, Margie Lange of Metropolis, Gertie Worley of Pharr, Texas, Jean Riese of Marissa, Linda Kudinger of Unionville, Mich., and Luanne Story of Attica, Mich.; and three brothers, James, Terry and Randy Story, all of Sebewaing, Mich. His mother, Vernell Jolly, preceded him in death. His pall bearers, Jerry Burnham, Drew Walker, Billy McDaniel, Don Meyer, Tammy Story.

Margaret Evelyn Halliday
CARBONDALE -- Mrs. Margaret Evelyn "Evelyn" Halliday, 77, died Saturday, Oct. 19, 2002, at home. Services and visitation were Monday at Walker Funeral Home in Carbondale. Burial was in Lipe Cemetery in Carbondale. Mrs. Halliday was born Nov. 20, 1924, in Anna to Ava Webb Cavitt. She married Lloyd O. Halliday. He proceeded her in death on March 11, 1987. She is survived by a son, Larry Halliday, and daughter-in-law, Mona of Carbondale; a daughter, Pat Stearns and son-in-law John Michael Halliday of Shreve Port, La. and friend, David LaMarr, LaDonna Grisham of Newburg, Ind., and son-in-law Ken; 13 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and one brother, Eugene Cavitt of Anna. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one brother and two sisters. Memorials may be made to the Unity Baptist Church of to Haven of Love Drive in Makanda.

Harry Crain Jr.
CARTERVILLE -- Harry Crain Jr., 73, died Monday, Oct. 21, 2002, in an auto accident. Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Johnson Hughes Funeral Home in Herrin, with the Rev. Lee Lovett officiating. Burial will be in Herrin City Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorial donations may be made to the American Diabetes. Association, the Parkinson's Disease Foundation or to Franklin-Williamson Human Services.

Essie Bennett
HARRISBURG -- Essie Bennett, 90, died at 8:58 p.m. Friday, Oct. 18, 2002, at Deaconess Hospital in Evansville, Ind. Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Gaskins Funeral Home, with the Rev. Roy Hughes officiating. Burial will be in Webber Camp Ground Cemetery in Galatia. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Mrs. Bennett was born July 1, 1912, to Taylor R. Clark and Effie Evitts. On July 4, 1940, she married Guy Kenneth Bennett. He preceded her in death on May 15, 1971. She was a homemaker and a member of American Legion Auxiliary. She was a Baptist. She is survived by three sons and a daughter-in-law, Conrad G. and Delores Bennett of Harrisburg, Jack D. Bennett of Harrisburg, and Charles L. "Larry" Bennett of California; five grandchildren, Kenny, Tonya, Beth, Mary, and Debbie; two great grandchildren, Jordan and Bryant; and two great great granddaughters. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Homer, Gilbert, and Leslie Clark; two sisters, Mae Unthank and Vessie Clark; and grandson Ricky Bennett.

Charles F. Cottle
SOUTHERN ILLINOIS -- Charles F. Cottle, 58, passed away on Sunday, October 20, 2002, at his home in Webster Groves, Mo. Mr. Cottle was the husband of Judy McCarty Cottle; father of Trevor S. Cottle of Beardstown, and Leslie Cottle Nehring of Webster Groves, Mo.; grandfather of Shelton Cottle, Caleb and Quinton Nehring. Adored and respected by many, Mr. Cottle was a retired teacher and coach. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Webster Christian Church, 1320 W. Lockwood, in Webster Groves, Mo. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Visiting Nurses Association, Hospice Care, 9450 Manchester, Suite 206, St. Louis, Mo., 63119 or the Scleroderma Research Foundation, 2320 Bath Street, Suite 315, Santa Barbara, Calif., 93105.

MOUNT VERNON -- Clifford W. Ackley, 93, died at 3:20 a.m. Monday, Oct. 21, 2002, at Nature Trail Healthcare Center. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Kirk Cemetery in Ina, with the Rev. Merle Fullerton officiating. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Hughey Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Good Samaritan Financial Assistance Program.

Edwin Schuette
STEELEVILLE -- Edwin H. Schuette, 91, of Steeleville, formerly of St. Louis, died at 1:55 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 19, 2002, at Chester Memorial Hospital in Chester. Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Mary Catholic Church in Chester, with Monsignor Dennis Schaefer officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery in St. Louis. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Welge-Pechacek Funeral Home in Chester. Memorials may be made to St. Mary Catholic Church.

Alice Ratcliff
MOUNT VERNON -- Alice Naomi Ratcliff, 77, died at 10:10 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 20, 2002, at Mount Vernon Countryside Manor. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Maple Hill Cemetery in Fairfield, with the Rev. Darren Elder officiating. No public visitation will be held. Memorials may be made to the Abundant Life Assembly of God Church or Central Christian Church.

Emma Beetley
SWANWICK -- Emma Elizabeth Beetley, 88, died at 1:50 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 20, 2002, in Pinckneyville Community Hospital. Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Pyatt-Harrawood Funeral Home in Pinckneyville, with Pastor Chuck Haynes officiating. Burial will be in Swanwick Bethel Cemetery. Visitation will be 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday and from 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Pinckneyville Healthcare Center.

Arthur Carter
CAIRO -- Arthur Bernard Carter, of Mobile, Ala., formerly of Cairo, died on Saturday, Oct. 19, 2002, in an Alabama hospital. Services will be at 2 p.m. Wedesday at Westminster Presbyterian Church. Burial will be in Pine Crest Cemetery in Mobile. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Radney Funeral Home in Mobile. Lutz & Rendleman Funeral Home is in charge of local arrangements.

Lyra Swinferd
SPARTA -- Lyra Swinferd, 94, died at 1:38 a.m. Monday, Oct. 21, 2002, at Randolph County Care Center. Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at McDaniel Funeral Home, with the Rev. Bud Bennett officiating. Burial will be in Caledonia Cemetery. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Randolph County Care Center Auxiliary.

OLMSTED -- Aline C. Foster, 88, died at 12:07 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 20, 2002, at Southeast Missouri Hospital in Cape Girardeau. Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Barkett Funeral Home in Mound City, with the Rev. Bonnie Fuer officiating. Burial will be in U. S. National Cemetery in Mound City. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Florence Graham
MOUNT VERNON -- Florence M. Graham, 63, died at 2:57 a.m. Monday, Oct. 21, 2002, at home. Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Hughey Funeral Home, with the Rev. Ron Cremeens officiating. Burial will be in Mount Vernon Memorial Gardens Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Phillip Caswell
CUTLER -- Phillip E. Caswell, 61, died at 7:35 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 20, 2002, at Pinckneyville Community Hospital. Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at McDaniel Funeral Home in Percy. Burial will be in Cutler Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9 to 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
