SOUTHERN ILLINOIS -- William Dean "Bill" Day, 71, of Montevallo, Ala., died Saturday, Oct. 19, 2002 in Montevallo, Ala. Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Rocko Funeral Home Chapel in Montevallo, Ala., with the Rev. Mike Ratliff officiating. Burial will be in the Montevallo Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Russell Stanley
DU QUOIN -- Russell E. Stanley, 69, died at 2:37 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 20, 2002, at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Marion. Arrangements are pending at Searby Funeral Home.

Henry A. Rahming
MURPHYSBORO -- Henry A. Rahming, 90, died at 10:10 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 19, 2002, at Rehab and Care Center of Jackson County. Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Crawshaw Funeral Home in Murphysboro, with the Rev. Jeff Gordon officiating. Burial will be in Tower Grove Cemetery in Murphysboro. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Mr. Rahming was born Feb. 1, 1912, in Murphysboro to Franz Rahming and Bessie (Schmidgall) Rahming. He married Louise Lockard on Oct. 7, 1933 in Pinckneyville. She survives in Murphysboro. He was a World War II veteran as a tank commander under General Patton in Germany and later a carpenter. He was a member of Murphysboro Lodge #498, A. F. and A. M., Murphysboro Rotary Club, Murphysboro VFW #7190, American Legion Paul Stout Post 127, the Carpenters Union Local 638 and the First Baptist Church in Murphysboro. He is also survived by two daughters and their spouses, Marsha and Bob Heiple of Gorham and Linda and Henry Scherich of Durham, N. C.; two sons and their spouses, Don and Karen Rahming of Murphysboro and Ron and Kathy Rahming of St. Joseph; two sisters, Florence Brandon of Murphsyboro and Clara Rigdon of Fulton, Mo.; five granddaughters, Sherry Thies, Julie Heiple, Autumn Rahming, Stephanie Rahming and Kelsey Rahming; two grandsons, Nathan Scherich and Bryan Scherich; and on great-granddaughter, Abbey Thies. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and one grandson, Ryan Rahming. Memorial contributions may be made to the Hospice of Southern Illinois or the First Baptist Church in Murphysboro.

Mary E. Grimes
ELDORADO -- Mary Evelyn Grimes, 95, died at 2:50 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 19, 2002, at Ferrell Hospital in Eldorado. Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Watson Funeral Home in Eldorado, with the Rev. Russell Helton officiating. Burial will be in the Wolf Creek Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Ms. Grimes was born on March 15, 1907, in Santoy, Ohio, to Charles N. Johnson and Ollie Mae (Kirby) Johnson. She was married to Logan Jesse Grimes on May 1, 1924. He preceded her in death on June 24, 1939. She was employed at the Ordinance Plant in Crab Orchard and as a Manager at the Harrisburg Hat Factory. She was a Christian and belonged to the Wasson Missionary Baptist Church. She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Helen Grubbs of Eldorado; grandchildren, Robert H. (Dianne) Grubbs of Eldorado, Evelyn (Dr. Larry) Jennings of Mount Carmel, Diane Grimes of Valpraiso, Ind., Daniel Grimes of Valpraiso, Ind. and Lora (Todd) DeLapp of De Soto; great-grandchildren, Jeremy DeLapp, Jonathan DeLapp, Delaney Grimes, Jeff (Ericka) Grubbs, Jill (Jason) Deaton, Julie (Tom) Fromm, Katie (Jake) Lindley, Valerie Jennings, Emily Jennings; great-great grandchildren, Kaitlyn Grubbs, Kylie Grubbs, Danielle Fromm and Hailee From; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two sons, Jesse and Robert Grimes; a son-in-law Robert Grubbs; three brothers, Thomas, Willard and Elmer Johnson; and one great-great-grandchild, Megan Grimes. Memorials may be made to the Wasson Missionary Church Fund.

ANNA -- Ronald Holcomb, 57, died at 2 p. m., Sunday, Oct. 20, 2002, at Marion Memorial Hospital. Arrangements are incomplete at Crain Funeral Home in Anna.

Maurice Lester Ward
TAMAROA -- Maurice Lester Ward, 82, passed away at 11:15 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 19, 2002 at the Pinckneyville Community Hospital. Mr. Ward was a retired switch control operator for GTE Phone Company. He was of the Protestant faith. He was a member of the Tamaroa Masonic Lodge # 207, Scottish Rites Valley of Southern Illinois, Ainad A. A. O. N. M. S. of E. St. Louis. He was born Sept. 20, 1920 in Franklin County, the son of Maurice L. and Alpha (Bruce) Ward. He is survived by a brother Walter Ward and wife Millie of Belleville; two sisters-in-law, Lillian Ward of Overland, Mo. and Margaret Ward of Benton; several nieces and nephews, Kenneth Ward of Bremerton, Wash., Harold Ward of Texico, Ronald Ward of Tamaroa, David Ward of Whittington, Dale Ward of Akin, Steven Ward of Belleville, Scott Ward of Belleville, Sharon Allmond of Irving, Texas, Patty Schaffner of Florissant, Mo.; several great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Russell and Mack Ward; one nephew; one great nephew; and one great niece. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 23, 2002, at the Searby Funeral Home in Tamaroa, with Rev. Raymond Baggott officiating. Interment will be in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery at Dix. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Searby Funeral Home in Tamaroa. Masonic services will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Friends may make memorials to the Tamaroa Masonic Lodge and will be accepted at the funeral home.

Bramlett L. Smith
HERRIN -- Bramlett L. Smith, 90, died at 5:45 a.m. Friday, Oct. 18, 2002 at her home in Herrin. She was born Feb. 20, 1912 in Morganton, Ark., to Arley and Everell (Hardin) Rogers. She married Paul Smith on Nov. 14, 1932 in Heber Springs, Ark., and he died on July 23, 1961. She worked at Mattingly Nursing Home in Herrin, Allen Industries and Smoker Brothers in Herrin, and Sangamo Electric in the Ordill area. She was a Protestant and a member of the Herrin Senior Citizens Center. Survivors include one daughter, Linda Smith of Herrin; one son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Velma Smith of Leasburg, Fla.; eight grandchildren, Joey Smith of Herrin, Harold "Boo Boo" Smith of Herrin, Carrie and Kevin Jeralds of Herrin and Leslie, Jeff, Jill, John and Michael Brower of Zeiglers; 11 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. Besides her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by two daughters, Carolyn Brower and Loretta Smith; and one brother, Harold Rogers. Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 22, at Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home in Herrin. Rev. Don Colson will officiate. Visitation will be from 6-9 p.m. Monday, Oct. 21, at the funeral home. Burial will be at Herrin City Cemetery.

Timmie Connors
WEST FRANKFORT -- Timmie D. Connors, 69, died at 1 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 19, 2002, at the Franklin Hospital. Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Union Funeral Home in West Frankfort. Burial will be in the Masonic-Odd Fellows Cemetery in Benton. Visitation will be after 6 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Aline Foster
OLMSTED -- Aline C. Foster, 88, died at 12:07 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 20, 2002, at the Southeast Missouri Hospital in Cape Girardeau. Arrangements are incomplete at the Barkett Funeral Home in Mound City.

Margaret Evelyn Halliday
CARBONDALE -- Mrs. Margaret Evelyn "Evelyn" Halliday, 77, died Saturday, Oct. 19, 2002, at home. Services will be at 1 p.m. today in Walker Funeral Home in Carbondale. Burial will be in Lipe Cemetery in Carbondale. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. today at the funeral home. Mrs. Halliday was born Nov. 20, 1924, in Anna to Ava Webb Cavitt. She was united in matrimony to Lloyd O. Halliday. He proceeded her in death on March 11, 1987. She is survived by a son, Larry Halliday, and daughter-in-law, Mona of Carbondale; a daughter, Pat Stearns and son-in-law John Michael Halliday of Shreve Port, La. and friend, David LaMarr, LaDonna Grisham of Newburg, Ind., and son-in-law Ken; 13 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and one brother, Eugene Cavitt of Anna. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one brother and two sisters. Memorials may be made to the Unity Baptist Church of to Haven of Love Drive in Makanda.

Lowern C. Perryman
ELKVILLE -- Lowern C. Perryman, 87, passed away at 11:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 19, 2002, at his residence. Lowern was a retired painter. He was of the Protestant faith. He was born December 6, 1914 at Pomona, IL the son of Austin and Mae (Hereford) Perryman. He married Reba M. Correll on August 18, 1933, at Benton, Ky. She passed away March 5, 1999. He is survived by three daughters, Fay Barraclough of Elkville, Joan Cochran and husband Donald of Elkville, Sue Funk and husband Benny of Elkville; a sister, Ruth Barnett of Elkville; 12 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; four brothers; five sisters; a son-in-law, Lavell Wood; and grandson, Robin Funk. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 22, 2002, at the Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin, with Rev. Brent Fitzgerald officiating. Interment will be in the Elkville Cemetery. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday, Oct. 21, at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Rick Warren Memorial Library in Elkville and will be accepted at the funeral home.

Joe Littrell
CAPE GIRARDEAU -- Joe Littrell, 86, of Cape Girardeau, formerly of southern Illinois, died on Saturday, Oct. 19, 2002, at the Lutheran Home in Cape Girardeau. He was born Aug. 11, 1916 in Dalton, Mo., the son of Selba and Margaret Teut Littrell. He was united in marriage to Mary Wilson on June 28, 1947 in Jackson, Mo. He loved the land and what it produced as was evident by his life. He was raised on a farm in Chariton County, Mo., and attended the University of Missouri College of Agriculture. After serving in the Army during World War II, he worked as a feed salesman for Wayne Feeds. This ultimately led him to the Union County area where he worked as a grain dealer and a farmer until his retirement in 1983. He was a member of the V. F. W. Post in Cape Girardeau and a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Cape. Survivors include his wife, Mary, of Cape Girardeau; one son and daughter-in-law, Bill and Mae Littrell of Jonesboro; two grandchildren, Marie and Perry Littrell; and one brother and sister-in-law, Ralph and Ethel Littrell. Mr. Littrell was preceded in death by his parents. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 21, in the chapel of Hileman and Parr Funeral Services with Pastor Douglas Briete officiating. Interment will be in the Jonesboro Cemetery. Friends may call from 4-7 p.m. today, Sunday, Oct. 20, at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Trinity Lutheran School Building Fund or the American Diabetes. Association.

Leopold Belek
CARBONDALE -- Leopold Belek, 97, formerly of Chicago, died at 3:45 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 20, 2002, in Memorial Hospital of Carbondale. He was born in Germany November 17, 1904, to Anton and Theresa (Kanclir) Bilohlavek. He married Anna Vokaty in 1927. She died in 1993. His granddaughter April Vyborny and her husband Rolly Mulligan of Carbondale, grandson Leonard Vyborny of Lyons; and great- granddaughter Melany Mulligan of Carbondale survive. He was also preceded in death by his daughter Angeline Vyborny-Iverson. Mr. Belek worked for forty years with Western Electric, retiring in 1969. He had lived for 62 years in Berwyn before coming to Carbondale. He loved traveling and also won many trophies showing Boxer dogs. Entombment will be at the Woodlawn Cemetery in Berwyn at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 22, 2002. Huffman-Harker Funeral Home of Carbondale, is in charge of arrangements.

Sharon Kay Odom
MURPHYSBORO -- Sharon Kay Odom, 57, died at 5:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 18, 2002, in Memorial Hospital of Carbondale. Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday in Ava Evergreen Cemetery. Wilson's Funeral Home in Ava is in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society. Ms. Odom was born Tuesday, Aug. 14, 1945, in East St. Louis to Martin Arthur and Mary Evelyn (Cook) Odom. She was a customer service representative for Blue Cross Blue Shield. Survivors include one son, David M. Odom of Christopher; her stepmother, Evelyn Odom of Murphysboro; one sister, JoAnn Blevins of Du Quoin; two nephews and their wives, Jeff and Melissa Blevins and James and Kristina Blevins; two great-nephews, Jeff G. and John Blevins; and a host of aunts, uncles, other relatives and close friends. Her parents preceded her in death.

Frieda Reaves
LOUISVILLE -- Frieda M. Reaves, 88, died at 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 17, 2002, at Clay County Hospital in Flora. Services will be at 10 a.m. today in St. Stephen's Catholic Church in Flora, with Monsignor Hyacinth Mazuchowski officiating. Burial will be in St. Stephen's Cemetery in Flora. Visitation was from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Frank and Bright Funeral Home in Flora. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association.

Phyllis Shirley
EFFINGHAM -- Phyllis J. Shirley, 57, died at 5:07 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 19, 2002, at St. Anthony's Memorial Hospital in Effingham. Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Schroeder-McClure Funeral Chapel in Chester. Burial will be at the Pleasant Ridge Cemetery in Rockwood. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today and from 7:30 to 11 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral chapel. Memorials may be made to the family.

PINCKNEYVILLE -- Emma Elizabeth Beetley, 88, died Sunday, Oct. 20, 2002, at Pinckneyville Community Hospital. Arrangements are incomplete at the Pyatt-Harrawood Funeral Home in Pinckneyville.

Mary Baker Harper
ANNA -- Mary Baker Harper, 103, of Murphysboro, formerly of Anna, died at 10 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 17, 2002, at her daughter's home. She was born on Feb. 25, 1899, in West Frankfort to John A. and Sarah (Peek) Baker. On Jan. 5, 1924, she was united in marriage to Walter Preston Harper Jr. He preceded her in death in July 1944. She was a member of the United Methodist Church. She was secretary for the Anna-Jonesboro Chamber of Commerce and the American Red Cross for over 25 years. She was a member of the Townsend F. Dodd American Legion Auxiliary in Anna. She is survived by a daughter, Sarah Jane Mitchell of Murphysboro; a granddaughter, Mary Susan Lassy and husband, Paul, of Symsonia, Ky.; a grandson, James Donald Mitchell of Mesa, Ariz.; four great-grandchildren, Kelly Lynn Maurer and husband, Matt, of Metropolis, John Paul Henry of Metropolis, and Bianca Jane Mitchell and David Ray Mitchell of Gastonia, N. C.; and nieces, nephews, and other relatives. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two grandsons, William David Mitchell and Thomas Harper Mitchell; four brothers; and two infant sisters. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. today, Sunday, Oct. 20, at Crain Funeral Home, with the Rev. Robin Lyons officiating. Burial will be in Anna Cemetery. Visitation will be from noon to 2 p.m. today at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church in Anna or Murphysboro, and will be accepted at the funeral home.
