Virginia Elizabeth Dickerson
CARBONDALE -- Virginia Elizabeth Dickerson, 89, died Thursday, Oct. 17, 2002, at Memorial Hospital of Carbondale. She was born on Dec. 13, 1912 in St. Louis, Mo., to Harry Joseph and Edith (Temple) Gensler. She moved to Carbondale in 1917 and attended University School and Carbondale Community High School. She married Harry Dickerson of McLeansboro on June 13, 1931 in Marion. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1981, their 60th anniversary in 1991, and celebrated their 70th anniversary last year. She is survived by three daughters, Rachael Nelson and her husband Toby of Carbondale, Brenda Dickerson of Carbondale and Linda Dickerson at home; six grandchildren, Steven Nelson of Eldorado, Elizabeth Abbott of Birmingham, Mich., David Nelson of Glendale, Mo., Stephen Thomas, Raymond Thomas of Murphysboro and Megan Dickerson of Carbondale; six great-grandchildren, Kathryn Bender, Zachary Nelson, Chelsea Abbott, Emily Abbott, Tanner Nelson and Tobey Nelson; and one sister, Dorthea Boggess of De Soto. Mrs. Dickerson was a member of the American Association of University Women, the Business and Professional Womens Club, National Retired Teachers Association and A. A. R. P. She was a member of First Christian Church in Carbondale for 77 years, where she taught intermediate Sunday School Class for several years. Mrs. Dickerson received her Bachelors and Masters Degrees from Southern Illinois University, and taught school in Granite City and in Jackson and Williamson Counties. She also operated Jenny's Antiques from 1974 until 1996. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 21, at Huffman-Harker Funeral Home, with Rev. Katherine Graves officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant Grove Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Sunday, Oct., 20, at the funeral home. She was preceded in death by one sister, Lillian Smith. Memorials may be directed to First Christian Church.

Versa V. Suttle
MARION -- Versa V. Suttle, 91, passed away at 5:20 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 17, 2002, at Cardinal Health Care in Energy. Graveside funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Mound Grove Garden of Memories in Kankakee, with Pastor Don Long officiating. There will be no visitation. Mitchell-Hughes funeral home is in charge of arrangements. Memorial contributions may be given in lieu of flowers to donors choice and may be sent to Mitchell-Hughes Funeral Home, P. O. Box 39, Marion, Ill., 62959. She was a waitress at many restaurants in the Kankakee area and a homemaker. Versa was born on Feb. 10, 1911, in Thompsonville, to Albert and Nancy (Lampley) Bennett. She married George B. Suttle in Kankakee May 10, 1947. He preceded her in death on July 3, 1978. She is survived by a daughter, Norma C. Gehring of Marion; two grandchildren, Dawn Boma of Harrisburg, and Angie Wallace of Rosiclare; three great grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren; one brother and sister-in-law, Elmo and Betty Bennett of San Diego, Calif.; and one sister and brother-in-law, Cora and Jack Cane of Marshall. Her parents; one grandchild, Michael Cloos; three sisters; two brothers; and one half brother preceded her.

Mary Baker Harper
ANNA -- Mary Baker Harper, 103, of Murphysboro, formerly of Anna, died at 10 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 17, 2002, at her daughter's home. She was born on Feb. 25, 1899, in West Frankfort, to John A. and Sarah (Peek) Baker. On Jan. 5, 1924, she was united in marriage to Walter Preston Harper Jr. He preceded her in death in July 1944. She was a member of the United Methodist Church. She was secretary for the Anna-Jonesboro Chamber of Commerce and the American Red Cross for over 25 years. She was a member of the Townsend F. Dodd American Legion Auxiliary in Anna. She is survived by a daughter, Sarah Jane Mitchell of Murphysboro; a granddaughter, Mary Susan Lassy and husband, Paul, of Symsonia, Ky.; a grandson, James Donald Mitchell of Mesa, Ariz.; four great grandchildren, Kelly Lynn Maurer and husband, Matt, of Metropolis, John Paul Henry of Metropolis, and Bianca Jane Mitchell and David Ray Mitchell of Gastonia, N. C.; and nieces, nephews, and other relatives. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two grandsons, William David Mitchell and Thomas Harper Mitchell; four brothers; and two infant sisters. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Crain Funeral Home, with the Rev. Robin Lyons officiating. Burial will be in Anna Cemetery. Visitation will be from noon to 2 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church in Anna or Murphysboro, and will be accepted at the funeral home.

Elinor M. Halstead
HERRIN -- Elinor M. Halstead, 91, died at 12:20 a.m. Friday, Oct. 18, 2002, at Herrin Hospital. Mrs. Halstead was born March 20, 1911, in Johnston City, to Joseph and Rosse (Kenzie) Mitchell. She married Roscoe Lewis Halstead and he died Sept. 30, 1970. She was retired from Allen Industries in Herrin. She was a member of Our Lady or Mt. Carmel Catholic Church, and was a volunteer for many years at Williamson County Programs on Aging. She is survived by a daughter, Rose Frizzell of Herrin; two granddaughters and their husbands, Marla and Jerry Roethe of Springboro, Ohio, and Brenda and Daniel Austin of Herrin; three great grandchildren, Isaac Roethe of Springboro, Lennon Dorethy of Herrin, and Dee Elle Dorethy of Herrin; great grandchild, Audriaunna Dorethy of Herrin; sister, Josephine Garifo of Sun Lakes, Ariz.; brother-in-law, Kenneth McClain of Herrin; and several nieces and nephews. Her parents; four brothers, Ben Mitchell, Podge Mitchell, Mike Mitchell, and Angelo Mitchell; and one sister, preceded her in death. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Johnson Hughes Funeral Home in Herrin, with Msg. Ken Schaefer officiating. Burial will be in San Carlos Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home, with a prayer service at 6 p.m. Memorials may be made to Cabrini Hall or San Carlos Cemetery and will be accepted at the funeral home.

Aretta Ethridge
MOUNT VERNON -- Aretta Edna Ethridge, 87, died at 3:45 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 17, 2002, at Nature Trail Nursing Home. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Mount Vernon Memorial Gardens, with the Rev. Don Verhines officiating. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Hughey Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to American Diabetes. Association.

Jesse 'Sonny' Jones Jr.
CHRISTOPHER -- Jesse "Sonny" Jones Jr., 78, died at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 17, 2002, at home. Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Gilbert Funeral Home in Christopher, with the Rev. David McConnell officiating. Interment will be in Mulkeytown Cemetery. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Mr. Jones was born July 18, 1924, in Christopher to Jesse Jones Sr. and Rosalie Pierce. He married Mildred Grizzell, who survives. He was was a retired coal miner from Old Ben Coal Company. He was a veteran of the Air Force during World War II and a member of the First Christian Church in Christopher, the U. M. W. A. for 42 years and of the Masonic Lodge. Survivors include one son, Mike Jones and wife, Sandy, of Christopher; two grandchildren, Todd Jones of West Palm Beach, Fla. and Eric Jones of Valier; and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two sisters. Memorials may be made to Hospice.

Raymond Eugene Leinicke
ZEIGLER -- Raymond Eugene Leinicke, 67, died on Wednesday, Oct. 16, 2002, at the V. A. Medical Center in Marion. Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at the Gilbert Funeral Home in Christopher. Interment will be in Zeigler City Cemetery. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Mr. Leinicke was born Aug. 24, 1935, in Murphysboro to Richard Leinicke and Helen Asa. He was engaged to Susan Minor. He was a retired factory worker and a veteran of the Navy serving in Korea. Survivors include four sons, J. R. Leinicke and wife, Debbie, of Christopher, Eric Leinicke of Herrin, Mark Hasting of Hallidayboro and Jeff Hastings of Murphysboro; three daughters, Linda King and husband, Brian, of Zeigler, Vickie Lauck and fiance, Tom Gunter, of Christopher and Shirley Miller and fiance, Monty Bears, of West Frankfort; one brother, Robert Leinicke and wife, Linda, of Belleville; one sister, Kathy Colliver and husband, Ken, of Michigan; several grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.

Ashley Sloan
HARRISBURG -- Ashley Sloan, 36, died at 8 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 17, 2002, in Harrisburg. Services will be at 11 a.m. today at Durham Cemetery in Galatia, with the Rev. Wendell Arms officiating. Interment will be in Durham Cemetery in Galatia. Visitation was Friday at the Sloan Funeral home. Mr. Sloan was born April 8, 1966, in Harrisburg to Dr. Grover Gene Sloan and Betty (Stout) Sloan. He married Sandy (Steele) Sloan. He was a member of Dorrisville Baptist Church and a past member of the Harrisburg Lions Club. Survivors include one son, Richard Mason Sloan of Harrisburg; two step-children, Kristen and Kevin Durham; three brothers, Steven Sloan and wife, Tina, of Galatia, Dr. Bruce Sloan and Warren Sloan and wife, Patty, both of Oak Lawn; two sisters, Auna Searcy of Murfreeboro, Tenn. and Elizabeth Sloan of Chicago; one step-grandchild, Desiray Braddock; and several nieces and nephews. Memorials may be made to the Paul McSparin Center or the Durham Cemetery.

Rose Hill
MOUNT VERNON -- Rose Marie Hill, 65, died at 10:10 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 16, 2002, at Nature Trail Healthcare Center in Mount Vernon. Services will be at 1 p.m. Sunday at Hughey Funeral Home with the Revs. Garlin Burris and Merle Fullerton officiating. Burial will follow at the Maple Hill Cemetery in Sesser. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Robert David Dennison
DU QUOIN -- Robert David Dennison, 78, passed away at 10:40 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 17, 2002, at Fairview Nursing Center in Du Quoin. Robert was a retired farmer. He was a member of the Second Baptist Church of Du Quoin. He was born Dec. 13, 1923, in Perry County, the son of Lucian John and Frances Cora (Davis) Stickles Dennison. He is survived by one brother, Orville Dennison of Christopher; two sisters, Emma Sizemore and Mary Kilmer, both of Du Quoin; several nieces and nephews; and several great-nieces and -nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, and seven sisters. Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 20, at the Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin with Rev. Steve Bareis officiating. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. today, Saturday, Oct. 19, at the funeral home in Du Quoin. Interment will be in the Elkville Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Second Baptist Church of Du Quoin and will be accepted at the funeral home.

Beondred K. Lathan
UNITY -- Graveside services for Beondred K. Lathan, PFC, will be at 11:20 a.m. Tuesday at National Cemetery in Mounds, with full military honors. Mr. Lathan enlisted in the United States Army on May 8, 1950, and was reported missing in action as of Nov. 27, 1950. Death is presumed to have occurred on Dec. 31, 1953, in the line of duty. His remains were recently identified through DNA. He was born on Sept. 23, 1931, to the late Otis and Alice Lathan of Unity. He grew up in Unity, and enrolled in the U. S. Army at the age of 18. After enlistment, he was never heard from again. His remains will be received from The Casualty and Mortuary Affairs Branch, Schoefield Barracks, Hawaii, by the Heavenly Gates Funeral Home of Cairo. He is survived by his brother, Ollie L. Lathan of Unity; cousins, Alice Lathan and DeAudry Lathan of Chicago, Cheryl Jenkins and Wanda Smith of Unity, and Sarita Lathan USAF.

Barbara Deri Daniels
MURPHYSBORO -- Barbara Deri Daniels, 61, died at 6:20 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 17, 2002, at St. Joseph's Memorial Hospital in Murphysboro. According to her wishes, her remains will be cremated and buried in Connecticut. There will be no services. Ms. Daniels was born June 20, 1941, in Bridgeport, Conn., to Zolton and Helen Deri. She was a retired elementary school teacher, writer and homemaker. She is survived by her parents of Fairfield, Conn.; one daughter and son-in-law, Debrah and Felix Dawson of Baltimore, Md.; one son and daughter-in-law, Douglas and Candice Daniels of San Diego, Calif.; one brother and sister-in-law, David and Marie Deri of Fairfield, Conn.; five grandchildren; and a special friend and fianc, Ed Jones of Murphysboro. Barbara was loved and will be missed by all who knew her. Pettett Funeral Home of Murphysboro is in charge of arrangements.

Lena Shovan
CARBONDALE -- Lena Shovan, 92, died on her birthday, Thursday, Oct. 17, 2002, at home. She was born Oct. 17, 1910, in Shawnee, Ohio, to Louis and Mary (Nagy) Shovan. A nephew, Raymond Carosy, of Christopher, survives. Her parents, one brother and four sisters preceded her in death. She was the former owner and operator of Red & White Grocery Store and a member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church. She had also worked at Vogler Motor Company. The funeral mass will be at 10 a.m. Monday, Oct. 21, at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church with Father Robert Flannery officiating. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery. The visitation will be from 9 a.m. until service time Monday at the church. Memorials may be made to St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church. Huffman-Harker Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Luella Howie
COULTERVILLE -- Luella Howie, 94, died at 10:45 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 17, 2002, at home. Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Sparta Reformed Presbyterian Church in Sparta, with the Rev. Ray Morton officiating. Burial will be in Bethel Cemetery in Swanwick. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday and from 7:30 to 11 a.m. Monday at McDaniel Funeral Home in Sparta. Memorials may be made to Gradcote Reformed Presbyterian Church or Hospice of Perry County.

Marie Pearson
COBDEN -- Marie L. Pearson, 67, died at 3 a.m. Friday, Oct. 18, 2002, at home. Services will be at 1 p.m. Sunday in Lutz and Rendleman Funeral Home in Cobden, with the Revs. Don Fisher and Dennis Nance officiating. Interment will be in the Rowan Cemetery in Makanda. Friends may call after 6 p.m. today and Sunday until 1 p.m. at the funeral home.
