Louis Garavaglia
HERRIN -- Louis Anthony "Geneto" Garavaglia, 83, of Zeigler, formerly of Herrin, died at 3:55 a. m., Sunday, March 2, 2003, at Herrin Hospital. Louis was born on March 29, 1919, in Herrin to John and Caroline (Merlo) Garavaglia. He married Emily Ann Walker on Sept. 2, 1967, in Zeigler. She preceded him in death in 1993. Louis worked as a painter for Chase Construction and Southern Illinois University Carbondale before his retirement as a driver for the Illinois Department of Transportation. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Zeigler, a former member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Herrin and a life member of the Knights of Columbus in Herrinand the Herrin Eagles, as well as being a member of the International Brotherhood of Painters Union. He was a graduate of St. Mary's Grade School and Herrin high school. When he was able, Louis enjoyed hunting rabbits and birds, fishing, and reading. He took great interest in politics and was involved with the Democratic Party. Survivors include nephew John Battioli and wife, Nadine of Herrin; nephew, John Lee Venegoni, and wife, Judy, of Herrin; niece, Mary Norma, Miller and husband, Alex, of Downers Grove; niece, Anna Marie Giaconi, and husband, Ron, of Benton; brother-in-law, Joe Mayeski of Benton; and six great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his loving wife and five sisters. The funeral mass will be held at 10 a. m., today, March 4, 2003, at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Herrin. Monsignor Ken Schaefer will officiate. Burial will follow at San Carlo Cemetery. Visitation was Monday at Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home in Herrin. The prayer service was held Monday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to San Carlo Cemtery or to the church of the donor's choice.

Carl Goetting
STEELEVILLE -- Carl L. Goetting, 71, died at 4:45 a.m. Monday, March 3, 2003, at the Sparta Community Hospital. Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at the St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Steeleville, with the Rev. Alan W. Janneke and Vicar Ryan Matthias. Burial will be in the St. Mark Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be at 5 p.m. today and from 7:30 a.m. to noon Wednesday at Wilson's Funeral Home in Steeleville and from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at the church. Memorials may be made to the St. Mark's Lutheran School. Mr. Goetting was born Oct. 26, 1931 in Steeleville to Henry C. and Mathilda (Salger) Goetting. He married L. Maxine Walternate Feb. 17, 1951 at Peace Lutheran Church in Steeleville. She survives. Also surviving are his children, Mark L. and wife Susan Goetting of Murphysboro, Todd A. and wife Cindy Goetting of St. Joseph, Jody and Deb Goetting of Pickneyville, Jay C. and wife Angela Getting of Rochester, Minn. and Stacy Goetting of Sparta; grandchildren, Amie and Joseph Goetting, Mitchell and Megan Goetting, Grace and Logan Goetting, Anna Mae, Emily and Jay McCray, Jody Wingerter and Luke, Jordan, Lincoln and Mackenzie Goetting and two sisters, Adell Hinnerichs of Mesa, Ariz. and Ella Mae Gerlach of Steeleville. He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters. Mr. Goetting retired from Egyptian Electric Co-op as a maintenance engineer. He was a member of the St. Mark's Lutheran Church of Steeleville. He was a member of the Carpenter Union of Chester and the IBEW Union at REA.

Lucille Hightower
MARION -- Lucille Holmes Hightower, 92, of Marion, passed away at 7:40 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 28, 2003, at Heartland Regional Medical Center of Marion. She was born on March 19, 1910, in Carrier Mills, the daughter of James M. and Stella (Beggs) Holmes. Lucille was united in marriage to Jefferson Autie Hightower on Dec. 23, 1933, in Harrisburg. Together they have enjoyed nearly seventy years of marriage. After her marriage, Lucille became the bookkeeper and office manager for the family business, Hightower's Radio and Refrigeration of Marion. She remained in that position working along side of her husband for the next forty-five years until her retirement in 1979. Lucille was a member of Second Baptist Church of Marion for many years. She is survived by her husband, Autie Hightower of Marion; daughter, Nancy L. Green of Anna; two granddaughters, Kathy R. McFadden and her husband, Richard, of Marion and Cynthia A. Green of Carbondale; two great grandchildren, Christopher Hunt of Ft. Meyers, Fla. and Kelly Deaton of Marion. Also surviving are many other family members and many lifelong friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; son, Billy G. Hightower on July 31, 2002; three brothers, Henry Holmes on July 12, 1965, Floyd R. Holmes on Jan. 3, 1981, and J. B. Holmes on Aug. 3, 1981; two sisters, Effie Jane Wilson on May 29, 1982 and Genevieve Holland in August of 1986. Service for Lucille Holmes Hightower will be held on Wednesday, March 5, 2003, in Wilson-McReynolds Funeral Home of Marion, with Gordon Lambert officiating. The time of the visitation will be held on today, March 4th from 5 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. For those who wish memorials, in memory of Lucille, may take the form of contributions to Second Baptist Church Building Fund and mailed in care of Wilson-McReynolds Funeral Home P. O. Box 370, Marion, IL 62959. Memorial contribution envelopes will also be available at the funeral home. Those needing additional information may contact the funeral home by calling 618-993-2131.

MARION -- Ruble Erastes Bridges, 75, of Marion passed away at 8:45 a.m. Saturday, March 2, 2003, at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Marion. Graveside services will be held on Wednesday March 5, 2003 at Rose Hill Cemetery, Marion, with the Marion Veterans Foreign Wars Post No. 1301 conducting military rites. Visitation will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 5, 2003, at the Blue Funeral Home in Marion. Memorials may be made to the Marion VFW Post No. 1301 Ritual Team. Envelopes are available at the funeral home or may be sent in care of Blue Funeral Home, P. O. Box 411, Marion, IL 62959. Mr. Bridges was born Feb. 6, 1927, in Golden, Miss., to Oliver and Rena Mae (South) Bridges. He married Doris Norris on July 20, 1967, in Belmont, Miss., and she survives. Other survivors include son, Edward Bridges of Granger, Texas; daughter, Amanda Bridges of Marion; brother, Vardaman Bilbo Bridges of Wilson, Ark.; and sister, Opal Strickland of Golden, Miss. He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Sally Ann Bridges; four brothers; and two sisters. Mr. Bridges served in the United States Navy from 1944 until 1965 on several ships. He was a life member of the VFW Post No. 6112 in Belmont.

DU QUOIN -- Rose Marie Crumbacher, 88, died at 11:45 a.m. Monday, March 3, 2003, in Fair Acres Nursing Home in Du Quoin. Arrangements are incomplete at Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin.

Juanita Gardner
WEST FRANKFORT -- Juanita F. Gardner, 75, of West Frankfort, died at 2 a.m. Sunday, March 2, 2003, at the Herrin Hospital. She was born Feb. 22, 1928, in West Frankfort to Oliver Thomas and Verdilla (Gunter) Thomas. She married Roy Gardner July 2, 1945, in West Frankfort. He survives. Also surviving are is a daughter, Jylonda Gardner Soulsby of Mayfield, Ken.; five grandchildren, Shelley Wilburn and Steven and Jason Volanski, all of West Frankfort and Erin and Eric Soulsby of Mayfield, Ken.; six great-grandchildren and one brother, Floyd Thomas and wife Nolalee of West Frankfort. She was preceded in death by her parents and a daughter, Loetta Volanski in 1995. Mrs. Gardner was a member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary of West Frankfort and was of the Protestant faith. Services for Juanita Gardner will be at 10 a.m. today, March 5, 2003, at the Parker-Reedy Funeral Home in West Frankfort, with the Rev. Jesse Lipe officiating. Burial will be in the Boner Cemetery in West Frankfort. Visitation will be at 6 p.m. today at the Parker-Reedy Funeral Home in West Frankfort. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society of the Hospice of Southern Illinois and will be accepted at the funeral home.

Neoshia Colp
HURST -- Neoshia F. (Conroy) Colp, 80, of Hurst,died at 5:45 p. m., Sunday, March 2, 2003, at her home. Neoshia was born Aug. 2, 1922, in Marion to John Thomas and Nellie Jane (Likert) Conroy. She married William Noel Colp June 9, 1939, in Jackson, Mo. He preceded her in death Jan. 9, 1990. She is survived by two sons and a daughter-in-law, Larry and Cheryl of Christopher and Robert L. Colp of Elkville; two daughters and sons-in-law, Clara Mae and Carl Smith of Elkville and Mitzi and Walter Tackitt of Hurst; eight grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren. Her parents, nine brothers, one sister, a daughter-in- law and three infant sons also preceded her in death. Neoshia was a member of the Creek Nation Pentecostal Church in Mulkeytown and the Knoff Bend Pentecostal Church in Elkville. Services for Mrs. Colp will be at 1 p. m., Thursday, March 6, 2003, at Vantrease Funeral Home in Royalton, the with the Rev. Marvin Boswell officiating. Burial will be at Blairsville Cemetery. Visiting hours are from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions in memory of Mrs. Colp may be made to Vantrease Funeral Home.

Inard Keele
MOUNT VERNON -- Inard N. Keele, 75, died at 1:30 a.m. Sunday, March 2, 2003. Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Osborn Funeral Home in Dix. Burial will be in Pleasant Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Osborn Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Parkinson's Association.

Veronica Przygoda
TAMAROA -- Veronica S. Przygoda, 84, died at 5:55 a.m. Monday, March 3, 2003, at the Marshall Browing Hospital in DuQuoin. Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the St. Charles Catholic Church in Dubois, with Monsignor. Melvin Vandeloo officiating. Burial will be in the St. Charles Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Newell Funeral Home in Waltonville, with a 7:30 p.m. Rosary service. Memorials may be made to the St. Charles Catholic Church or Cemetery and wil be accepted at the funeral home. Mrs. Przygoda was born Feb. 18, 1919, in Scheller to Joseph and Joan (Majewski) Walkowiak. She married Daniel Przygoda Oct. 16, 1939, in St. Charles Catholic Church. He preceded her in death March 9, 1979. She is survived by daughter, Shirley and husband John Trader of Scheller; sisters, Clara Walkowiak and Francis Skorch; grandchildren, Keith Trader, Kevin Trader and wife Melinda and Kim and husband Danny Lowery; great grandchildren, Mackenzi Trader, Matthew Trader and Brandon Lowery and other nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by her mother Joan; her husband, Daniel; her brother, Joseph Walkowiak and son, Eugene Przygoda.

Mark Shoemaker
SPARTA -- Mark Steven Shoemaker, 42, of Sparta, born Nov. 2, 1960, in Belleville, entered into eternal rest by the grace of God on Feb. 28 in the year of our Lord 2003. He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Nellie (nee Duncan) Shoemaker, three sisters and one brother in childhood. Mr. Shoemaker is survived by Greg Holt-Shoemaker; brothers and sisters, Lucille and husband Bill Hassard, Michael and wife Jean Shoemaker, Phyllis and husband Mike Thurman, Eddie and wife Betty Shoemaker, Gregory and Holt Shoemaker, Patricia and husband John Buehler, Evelyn and husband Mark Breakfield and Jacqueline and husband Steven Holt and many nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews. He will also be missed by many dear friends. Memorials may be made to Bethany Place. Friends may visit from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 5, 2003, at George Renner and Sons Funeral Home in Belleville. A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 5, 2003, at George Renner and Sons Funeral Home, Belleville. According to his wishes, Mr. Shoemaker will be cremated. George Renner and Sons Funeral Home in Belleville is in charge of arrangements.

Nedra Lacy
PINCKNEYVILLE -- Nedra Lacy, 81, died Monday, March 3, 2003, in the Luther Manor Nursing Home in Hannibal, Mo. Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Oak Grove Baptist Church in Pinckneyville, with the Rev. Chuck Todd officiating. Burial will be in the Mueller Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the Pyatt-Harrawood Funeral Home and from 9 to 10 a.m. Thursday at the church. Memorials may be made to the Oak Grove Baptist Chuch in Pinckneyville.

John Grammer
BENTON -- John H. Grammer, 76, of Benton, died at 3:57 p.m. Saturday, March 1, 2003, at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Mount Vernon. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 4, 2003, at the Hobbs-Johnson Funeral Home in Benton, with the Rev. John Snell officiating. Burial will be in the Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Valier. Visitation will be from noon to 2 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Mr. Grammer was born Dec. 21, 1926, in Franklin County, the son of Archie and Stella (Bradford) Grammer. He worked as a janitor at Southern Illinois University Carbondale before his retirement. He was a member of the First Apostolic Church in Zeigler and was a U. S. Army veteran of the Korean War. His passions were singing and playing the guitar and fishing. He will be sadly missed by his wife, Nadine Grammer of Benton; a daughter, Pam and husband Don Hill of Caseyville; a son, Rick and wife Tamela Grammer of Zeigler; ten grandchildren, Misti Prudent of Granite City, Adam and Leslie Hill, Micah and Amy Hill, all of Bloomington, Ind., Nikki and Kevin Hopkins of Arab, Ala., Dustyn Hill of Caseyville and Jessica, Rijeana, Charity, Faith and Ricky Grammerof Zeigler; five great-grandchildren, Austyn Prudent, Alyssa Hopkins, Ethan, Jacob and Kamron Hill; five brothers, Bill and Ruth Grammer of Sesser, Lonnie and Verla Grammer of Royalton, Archie and Sharon Grammer of Waterford, Mich., Darrell and Judy Grammer of Eddyville, Ken., Carroll Grammer of Clarksville, Tenn.; four sisters, Ramona Tasky, Ruby Talley and Carolyn Williams, all of Benton and Sharon and Stan Maser of Kenosha, Wis.; sister-in-law, Kathy Grammer of Jackson, Miss. and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Grammer was predeceased by his parents; three brothers, Don, Charles, and Carl Grammer and a brother-in-law, Curtis Williams. Memorial contributions may be made to the First Apostolic Church, Zeigler and will be accepted at the funeral home.

Oakley Wisdom
MARISSA -- Oakley Douglas Wisdom, 2, of rural Marissa, died at 9:45 p.m. Saturday, March 1, 2003, at the home of his mother and grandparents. Oakley was born Sept. 28, 2000, in Sparta. He attended the Winkle Baptist Church in Winkle. He is survived by his mother, Vanessa Wisdom of rural Marissa; father, Joel Sharp Jr. of Marissa; grandparents, Wayne and Barb Weshinskey of rural Marissa and Doug Wisdom, Becky Rednour of rural Marissa and Joel and Tammy Sharp of Marissa; great-grandparents, Eugene and Dixie Morrison, Dean and Connie Wisdom, Bruce and Dorothy Weshinskey, Jerry Boater and Pat Rodgers and William and Susan Sharp; great-great-grandmother, Marie Hill; aunts, Renee and Raven Wisdom, Alexa Weshinskey, Amanda Rednour and Amber Sharp. He will be sadly missed by all the people who came in contact with him. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 4, 2003, in Winkle Baptist Church, with Pastor Karl Barnfield officiating. Sara Hindman
CARTERVILLE -- Sara Elizabeth "Grandma Hiney" Hindman, age 87, of Carterville, passed away at 1:21 p. m., Friday, Feb. 28, 2003, surrounded by her loving family. Services will be at 11 a.m. today at Riggin- Pillatsch Funeral Home in Carterville, with the Revs. Chuck Epperly and Dorothy Cook officiating. Burial will be in North Oakwood Cemetery in Carterville. Friends may call after 9:30 a.m. today at the funeral home. Sara was born on July 2, 1915, in Carterville to George and Ethel Butts McEwan. She married Elijah Leoran "Hiney" Hindman on June 25, 1933. He passed away on Dec. 14, 1990. She is survived by two daughters, Rae Rich of Carterville and Ludene Cox and her husband Jim of Carterville; sister, Margaret and Jim House of Fenton, Mich.; granddaughter, Julie and Brad McCamish of Carterville; two grandsons, Jay Cox and Steve Rich both of Carterville; great grandsons, Sam and Brandy McCamish, Joe McCamish, and Andrew McCamish, all of Carterville; great-great granddaughter, Daisy Gretchen McCamish of Carterville; cousins, Betty Ghent of Centralia, Wanda Kirk of Carterville and Carrol Gene Butts and Bobby Dean Butts, both of Fenton, Mich.; sisters-in-law, Pauline Hernbeck of Marion and Genevieve Adams of Hillsboro and special care giver and good friend, Sally Mitchum of Marion. She was preceded in death by her parents George McEwan and Joe and Ethel Adams; brothers, Bennie McEwan and Joe Adams Jr.; sister, Agnes Mary Greer; son in-law, Jack Rich and nephew, Jim McEwan. Sara was a homemaker and devout Christian. She could be found spending an evening curled up to a good book. She was a devoted mother and grandmother and had a special place in her heart for little children and small animals. Memorial contributions can be made to Hospice of Southern Illinois or to the Crainville Baptist Church.

Devon LaPointe
BENTON -- Devon Jason LaPointe, 16, of Benton, died at 12:51 a.m. Saturday, March 1, 2003, at the St. Francis Medical Center, Cape Girardeau. A funeral mass will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, March 4, 2003, at the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Benton, with Father Joseph Trapp officiating. A private family committal service will be held at the Brady Cemetery in Akin. Visitation will be after 3 p.m. Monday at the Hobbs-Johnson Funeral Home. Devon was born Jan. 29, 1987, in Oceanside, Calif., the son of David Erland LaPointe and Wanda Wolf. He was a sophomore at Benton high school, a member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church, and enjoyed playing soccer in the Franklin County Soccer Association League. He is survived by his mother, Wanda Wolf of Benton; father, David LaPointe of Flint, Mich.; step-father, Daniel Francis Kalkstein of Cedar Hill, Texas; maternal grandparents, Willie and Mary Wolf of Benton; paternal grandparents, David and Jeannine LaPointe of Travers City, Mich.; step-grandparents, Donald and Ann Kalkstein of Mountain Home, Ariz., three half-brothers, David, Derek, and Dillon LaPointe; a half-sister, Michelle LaPointe; several aunts and uncles; cousins, Alice, Ashley, Andy, Dakota, Drey, Landon, Tanner, Zoe Belle and friends.
