Edna Owens
JOHNSTON CITY -- Edna Mae Owens, 96, of Johnston City, died at 5:30 a.m. Sunday, March 2, 2003, at Fountain's Nursing Home in Marion. Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 4, 2003, at the Murman and Wilson Funeral Home in Johnston City, with the Rev. Dale Dilbeck officiating, assisted by the Rev. Nan Harper. Burial will be in Lakeview Cemetery, in Johnston City. Visitation will from noon to 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 4, 2003, at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Church of God of Prophecy of Johnston City, envelopes available at the funeral home. Edna was born on Nov. 22, 1906, in Winkle Perry County, the daughter of Charles W. and Lucy (Griffin) Hardin. She married Albert Owens on Oct. 5, 1925, in Benton, who preceded her in death on May 16, 1964. Edna was a member of the Church of God of Prophecy in Johnston City. She is survived by four children, Melba Owens of Johnston City, Glenda Null and husband Jim of Benton, Jerry Owens and wife Sharon of Ohio, Kenneth Owens and wife Marie of Hobart, Ind.; seventeen grandchildren; thirty great-grandchildren; six great-great grandchildren and one sister, Eva Mulcaky of Springfield. She was preceded in death by her parents, one son, one daughter, one grandson, one great-grandson, six sisters and four brothers. She was a precious mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

Charles Biehl
MARION -- Charles Lavern Biehl, 83, passed away at 4:36 p.m. Saturday, March 1, 2003, at Franklin County Hopsital in Benton. Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 4, 2003, at Mitchell-Hughes funeral home in Marion, with the Rev. Roger David officiating. Burial will follow at East Lawn Memorial Gardens in Energy. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Memorials may be given to Alzheimer's Association and envelopes will be available at the funeral home. Charles was born March 7, 1919, in Williamson County to Charles Lewis and Bessie (Simmons) Biehl. He married Tresa Frankie in Aug. 2, 1942, in Cape Girardeau, Mo. She survives in Marion. He was a life long resident of Williamson County and served in World War II in the U. S. Army Air Corps. As a cadet he flew B-25s. After his military service he returned to Williamson County and worked and retired from the Teamsters Union 347 of West Frankfort. He was a member of Shilo Christian Church and an avid vegetable and fruit tree gardener. Survivors include wife, Tresa Biehl of Marion; daughter, Linda South of Marion; grandchildren, Charles Matthew South of Novata, Calif. and Mikaela Lyn South of San Rafael, Calif. and several nieces and nephews. Wilda Roberts
MARION -- Wilda Chapman Roberts, 90, died 8:55 a. m., Saturday, March 1, 2003 at Shawnee Christian Nursing Home. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 4, 2003, at Mitchell-Hughes Funeral Home, with the Rev. Victor Long officiating. Visitation will be from 9 to 11 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Entombment will follow at Rose Hill Cemetery in Marion. Memorial donations may be made to donors choice. Wilda was born May 17, 1912, in Marion to William and Wilda (Perry) Chapman. She married Stanton Wilson Roberts in Marion Sept. 5, 1987. He passed away June 16, 1995. She was an Executive Secretary for CEO Whirlpool in Evansville for 18 years. She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Marion and sang in church. She was also a member of Marion Women's Club, and Lifetime member of Marion Memorial Hospital Auxiliary. She is survived by one step-daughter and husband; Gayla and Cyril Smothers of Sesser; two step-grandchildren; three step-great grandchildren and two sisters, Dorothy Bennett of Decatur and Mary Travelstead of Marion.

Ralph Watson
OLIVE BRANCH -- Ralph H. Watson, 88, died Saturday, March 1, 2003, at his home. Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Olive Branch Methodist Church, with the Rev. Jerry Herring officiating. Burial will be in the Olive Branch Cemetery. Visitation will be at 5 p.m. today at the Crain Funeral Home in Tamms. Memorials may be made to Olive Branch Methodist Church.

M. Jon Viernow
CARBONDALE -- M. Jon Viernow, 36, of Viola, died Saturday, March 1, 2003, near Joy. Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Dennison Funeral Home in Viola. Burial will be in the Preemption Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Jon's son, Zane Viernow.

Lillian Goff
BENTON -- Lillian Goff, 83, died at 4 p.m. Friday, Feb. 28, 2003, at the Benton Health Care Center. Services will be held at 1 p.m. today at the Hobbs-Johnson Funeral Home, with the Rev. Larry Clyatt officiating. Burial will be in Herrin Cemetery. Visitation will be from noon to 1 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Juanita Gardner
WEST FRANKFORT -- Juanita F. Gardner, 75, of West Frankfort, died at 2 a.m. Sunday, March 2, 2003, at the Herrin Hospital. She was born Feb. 22, 1928, in West Frankfort to Oliver Thomas and Verdilla (Gunter) Thomas. She married Roy Gardner July 2, 1945, in West Frankfort. He survives. Also surviving are six great-grandchildren and one brother, Floyd Thomas and wife Nolalee of West Frankfort. She was preceded in death by her parents and a daughter, Loetta Volanski in 1995. Mrs. Gardner was a member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary of West Frankfort and was of the Protestant faith. Funeral services for Juanita Gardner will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, March 4, 2003, at the Parker-Reedy Funeral Home in West Frankfort, with the Rev. Jesse Lipe officiating. Burial will be in the Boner Cemetery in West Frankfort. Visitation will be at 6 p.m. today at the Parker-Reedy Funeral Home in West Frankfort. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society of the Hospice of Southern Illinois and will be accepted at the funeral home.

George Norris
MARION -- George Cline Norris, 96, died at 10:25 p. m., Friday, Feb. 28, 2003 at his grandsons residence in Pittsburg. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, March 3, 2003, at the Odd Fellows Cemetery in Marion, with Mike Robison officiating. Mitchell-Hughes is in charge of arrangements. George was born Nov. 13, 1906, in Vandoozer, Mo. to Louie E. and Maude (Minter) Norris. George was a coal miner and later retired from State Hospital in Elgin as a maintenance personnel. He was of Protestant faith and member or Church of God in Marion. Survivors include, son Gary Norris of Tampa, Fla.; son and daughter-in-law Jack and Pam Norris of Hurst; son and daughter-in-law Danny and Julie Norris of Tuscaloosa, Ala.; daughter and son-in-law Malissa and James Fitsimmons of Winter Springs, Fla.; 11 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. Preceding him in death are his parents and sister, Geraldine Bowman.

Elda Sachtleben
HOYLETON -- Elda R. Sachtleben, 88, died Saturday, March, 1, 2003, in Carlyle Healthcare Center in Carlyle. Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Hoyleton, with the Rev. Mark Nebel officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Styninger Funeral Chapel in Hoyleton. Memorials may be made to the Trinity Lutheran Church Endowment Fund, KFUO or the Lutheran Hour.

Ruble Bridges
MARION -- Ruble E. Bridges, 75, died at 8:45 a.m. Sunday, March 2, 2003, in the Veteran's Hospital of Marion. Arrangements are incomplete at Blue Funeral Home in Marion.

Ina Sanders
HERRIN -- Ina Lorene Hernbeck Sanders, 87, went to meet her Lord and Savior and all her other loved ones who have gone on before, at 10:39 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 27, 2003, at the Shawnee Christian Nursing Center in Herrin. She was born at home to William C. "Pop" and Myrtle "Mom" Hernbeck in Harco on June 10, 1915. She married A. N. "Buster" Sanders on St. Patrick's Day, March 17, l934, in Marion. They were married for 59 years when he passed away Jan. 26, 1994. He had been a Baptist minister for over 50 years. Besides raising five children, she was very talented in many crafts, including China painting in her later years and sewing clothes for her family. She held several jobs in the churches her husband pastored. She had a beautiful alto voice. She sang for the Lord in various groups and sang solos. She served as President of the Herrin Woman's Club and was Activity Director for Hampton Nursing Home on South 14th Street. She and her husband lived on South 13th in Herrin for almost 50 years. The house was later sold to Herrin Hospital. She was a member of the Christian Life Center in Herrin. While she lived with her daughter she attended Community of Faith Church. Survivors include daughter, Beverly Griffith of Energy; son and daughter in law, Paul Mark and Toni C. Sanders of Herrin; 13 grandchildren, Ken and Lois Hill of Chester, Kyle and Joann Hill of Nashville, Tenn., Bryce and Pam Hill of Chester, Ellen Kay and Bryan Payne of Herrin, Connie and Terry Davie of Herrin, Larry and Christy Sanders of Herrin, Kurt Griffith of Royalton, Brad and Becky Griffith of Herrin, Michele and Mike Bird of Energy, Lael Griffith of Herrin, Melody and Brett Henry of Highland, Mich., Nick and Karen Sanders of Herrin, Matt and Tracy Sanders of Herrin; 26 Great Grandchildren; 12 Great Great Grandchildren; sister, Beulah "Boots" Rushing of Marion, brother and sister in law, Bob and Aline Hernbeck of Herrin; brother and sister in law, Lloyd and Laura Hernbeck of Cambria; brother and sister in law, Don and Beverly Hernbeck of Marion; sister in law, Pauline "Pennie" Hernbeck of Marion and several nieces and nephews. Her parents; husband; one daughter, Norma Jean Hill; two sons, Larry Del Sanders and Dexter Bill Sanders; one brother, William "Bill" L. Hernbeck; three sisters in infancy; one grandson, Blair Hill, and son in law Ray Griffith preceded her in death. Services were Saturday, March 1, 2003, at Johnson Hughes Funeral Home in Herrin. The Rev. Ted Pavloff will officiate. Visitation was Saturday at the funeral home. Burial will be at East Lawn Memorial Gardens in Energy. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The Christian Life Center Building Fund, The Alzheimer's Association or Hospice of Southern Illinois and will be accepted at Johnson Hughes, P. O. Box 429, Herrin, IL 62948. All are invited to join the family for a meal provided by Community of Faith Church at 1105 North Refuge Road Carterville, Illinois 148 South of Illinois 13.

Arvil E. Helmig
CENTRALIA -- Arvil E. Helmig, 85, of Centralia died Friday morning in the Friendship House in Centralia. Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at the Trinity Lutheran Church with the Revs. James Gullen and Perry Schefelker officiating. Burial will be in Hillcrest Memorial Park with military rites by VFW Post 2055 and American Legion Post 446. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Styninger-Pacey Funeral Home.

Alberta Miller
CARBONDALE -- Alberta Miller, 85, of Carbondale, passed away at 3:50 p. m., Wednesday, Feb. 26, 2003, at Memorial Hospital of Carbondale surrounded by her loving family. Services will be held at 11 a. m., Monday, March 3, 2003, at the Meredith Funeral Home in Carbondale, with Reverend Janice West officiating. Interment will be held at Oakland Cemetery, Carbondale. Friends may visit from 5 to 8 p. m., today, March 2, 2003, at the funeral home. Memorials donations are the preferred in the form of remembrance and may be made to Cardinal Glennon Hospital. Please make checks payable to Grand Chapter OES IL. In memo line you may write "Cardinal Glennon Hospital in memory of Alberta Miller. " Donations may be mailed to Meredith Funeral Home, 300 S. University Ave., Carbondale, IL 62901. Alberta was born Oct. 17, 1917, in Colnsilla, Okla. to Joe Charon and Hattie Baumert Charon. She married Everett V. Miller Jr. on Aug. 17, 1941, in West Frankfort. She is preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Kenneth. Survivors include her husband, Everett V. "Ebbie" Miller Jr. of Carbondale; a son and daughter-in-law, Everett V. III and Peggy Miller of Marion; a daughter and son-in-law, Sharon and Stephen Ashley of Smithsburg, Md.; six grandchildren, Kelly and Heather Ashley and Cheryl, Kim, Connie, and Kevin Miller; ten great-grandchildren; one great-great granddaughter and a sister, Sybil Charon of St. Louis, Mo. Alberta was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Carbondale, the Carbondale Rebekah Lodge 220 and a former member of the Sheba White Shrine of Jerusalem, Shrine #61 of Carbondale. She was also a 55 year member of the Order of the Eastern Star Chapter 467 of Carbondale, where she was the Grand Lecturer of Illinois and served three terms as a Grand Representative. She was the wife of a past Grand Patron and the Grand Escort of 1986-1987. Alberta was active in the Carbondale Chapter Order of the Rainbow for Girls. Alberta worked as an assistant to the postmaster for the U. S. Postal Service for forty-one and one-half years before her retirement in 1979. She served as MSC Director, Support for the U. S. Postal Service from 1974 until her retirement.

Shirley Doty
BENSONVILLE -- Shirley (Chitwood) Doty, 57, of Bensonville, died at 1:30 a. m., Saturday, March 1, 2003, at the Alexian Brothers MedicalCenter in Elkin Grove Village. Shirley was born May 11, 1945, in Hilltop, Ken. to Wilburn and Madlean (King) Chitwood. She is survived by a dear friend, Richard Decker of Bensonville; a daughter and son-in-law, Lori and Steve Klingle of Johnsburg; two sons, Ronald Doty and his fiance, Debra Raines and Bill Doty of West Frankfort; eight grandchildren, Melinda Doty, Steven Henderson, Amber Henderson, Brittany Doty, Brennan Doty, Billy Doty, Paris Doty and Preston Doty; two great grandchildren, Tony Tillman and Isaiah Doty; two sisters andbrothers-in-law, Marvlin and Jim Cook of Royalton and Betty and Gary Greathouse of Green River, Wy. Her parents, two brothers, Bob and Bud Chitwood and three sisters, Eleanore Tucker, Sarah Edwards and Brenda Chitwood preceded her in death. Shirley was of the protestant faith and had worked as an in home healthcare provider. Services for Ms. Doty will be held at 11 a. m., Tuesday, March 4, 2003, at Vantrease Funeral Home in Zeigler, with the Rev. Robbie Chitwood officiating. Burial will be at the Blairsville Cemetery. Visiting hours are after 9 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home until the hour of the services.

Delores Fozzard
CARTERVILLE -- Delores Dee Marie Reed Fozzard, of Carterville, died Friday, Feb. 28, 2003, at her home in Carterville, surrounded by members of her family. Dee was born June 2, 1931, in Carbondale. She was the daughter of Raymond and Helen Kelly Reed. Dee married Barney Fozzard, of Carterville on Dec. 27, 1948, at First Christian Church in Carterville. She leaves two sons and daughter in-laws Reed and Kay (Peterson) Fozzard, of Carterville and Randy and Lee Ann (Murphy) Fozzard of Phoenix, Ariz. Dee is also survived by four grandchildren, Pete and Kristy (Whitlow) Fozzard and Chris Fozzard all of Carterville, Rex Fozzard and Lois Fozzard of Phoenix, Ariz.; sister Marcelle (Reed) Rains Hock of Carterville; several nieces, nephews and cousins. Her parents and one sister, Wanda Reed Deaton Neely preceded her in death. Dee was a retired florist and co-owner of Reed's Florist in Carbondale and Carterville. Her great joys were her family, her home, and traveling. She spent many hours doing family genealogy research by helping people gather information on their families from Southern Illinois. Dee was a member of the Carterville First Baptist Church, Daughters of the American Revolution Daniel H. Brush Chapter Carbondale, Daughters of the Colonial Wars, Daughters of Colonial Dames, Descendants of the Indian Wars, War of 1812, and Friends of the Youngers. She served on the boards of the Carterville Public Library and Genealogy Society of Southern Illinois. Dee's wishes were to have her remains donated to the Mayo Foundation in Rochester, Minn. for medical research. A memorial service will be conducted at a later date. "Friends are quiet Angels who lift us to our feet when our wings have trouble remembering how to fly. " In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Hospice Of Southern Illinois, 1110 N. Johnson, Marion, IL 62959, the First Baptist Church in Carterville and the Carterville Public Library. Riggin-Pillatsch Funeral Home in Carterville is in charge of the arrangements.

Alma Hornbostel
PERCY -- Alma Hornbostel, 94, died at 12:55 a.m. Saturday, March 1, 2003 in Percy. Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the Peace Lutheran Church in Steeleville. Burial will be in the Peace Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be at 6 p.m. Sunday and from 7:30 to 9 a.m. Monday at the funeral home, and from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday at the church. Memorials may be made to the Hospice of Southern Illinois or to the Peace Lutheran Church in Steeleville. Alma was born July 3, 1908, in Campbell Hill to Karl Oetking and Kena Huseman Oetking. She married Elmer Hornbostel Aug. 21, 1926, in Chester. He preceded her in death Sept. 8, 1990. She is survived by one son, Omer Hornbostel and wife Shirley of Percy; three daughters, Viola Koch of Percy, Lavera and husband Ralph Biermann of Steelville and Ruby and Earl Ernsting of Percy; 13 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren and 18 great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, one grandson, one brother and three sisters. She was a homemaker and a member of the Peace Lutheran Church of Steeleville.
