Christopher J. Jones
MARION -- Christopher J. Jones, 23, of Marion, passed away at 2:45 p. m., Saturday, July 19, 2003, as a result of a drowning accident on the Current River in Missouri. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 23, 2003, at Zion United Church of Christ, 930 West Cherry St. in Marion, with Pastor Kenneth D. Kramer officiating. Interment will be in Cedar Grove Cemetery, Buncombe. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, July 22, 2003, at the church. Memorials may be made to Zion United Church of Christ, 930 West Cherry Street, Marion, IL 62959, and will be accepted by the funeral home. Meredith Funeral Home, Carbondale is in charge of arrangements. Christopher was born Sept. 8, 1979, in Marion, to Randy and Gail (Meredith) Jones. Survivors include his parents, Randy and Gail Jones of Marion; one sister, Julie Jones of Bloomington/Normal; maternal grandparents, Leslie and Sharleen Meredith of Marion; paternal grandparents. James and Betty Jones of Marion; several aunts and uncles and many cousins. Christopher graduated from Marion High School, where he played the trombone in the MHS Band. He played soccer and was the recipient of the very first MVP award which he received his junior year. He received an Associate Degree from John A. Logan College and furthered his education at Southern Illinois University Carbondale, where he earned a BA in Marketing. Chris also attended Christchurch College in Canterbury, England, for a semester. He loved traveling, with his travels taking him to Cancun, Mexico, Europe and Costa Rica where he played soccer. Christopher was currently employed by Team Enterprises USA in California where he worked in Marketing. He was a member of Zion United Church of Christ, Marion; Phi Sigma Epsilon Business Fraternity; and Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society. Chris was a very outgoing person who made friends all over the world. He loved his family and friends and will be missed by all whose lives he touched.

Grace Irvin
BROUGHTON -- Grace Esther Irvin, 90, of Broadwell, formerly of Boughton, died at 5:45 a.m. Sunday, July 20, 2003, at home. Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Gholson Funeral Home in McLeansboro, with the Rev. Bob Jones officiating. Burial will be in Hickory Hill Cemetery near Broughton. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Broughton United Methodist Church or Broadwell Christian Church.

TAMAROA -- Stanley Wesolak, 89, died at 2:37 a.m. Sunday, July 20, 2003, in Pinckneyville Community Hospital. Arrangements are incomplete at Searby Funeral Home in Tamaroa.

DU QUOIN -- Hazel Wilson, 90, died at 6:50 a.m. Sunday, July 20, 2003, in St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Belleville. Arrangements are incomplete at Neal-McClure Funeral Home.

THOMPSONVILLE -- Everett Isaacs, 86, died at 12:47 p.m. Sunday, July 20, 2003, at home. Arrangements are incomplete at Sloan Funeral Home in Galatia.

Mary Tripp
ANNA -- Mary E. Tripp, 80, of Anna, died Sunday, July 20, 2003, in Pueblo, Colo. Arrangements are incomplete at Lutz and Rendleman Funeral Home in Anna.

Marion Brown
ANNA -- Mrs. Marion L. Brown passed away Sunday, July 20, 2003, in her home in Anna. She was born Dec. 19, 1928, in Milwaukee, Wis., the daughter of Herbert and Dorothy Wendelburg Juedes. She moved to Anna with her family in 1967. She was married to Edwin Ladwig, who preceded her in death in 1985. She married James H. Brown on Oct. 10, 1987, in Anna. She is survived by her husband, James H. Brown of Anna; three children, Charles and wife Nancy Schmidt of Carterville, and their two children, Lisa and Ryan; Carol and husband Rick Dippold of Thebes and their three daughters, Deanna, Kristen and Melanie; and Kathy and husband Steve Landholt of Perryville, Mo., and their four children, TJ, Tim, Stephanie and Stacy; three cousins, Tom Wendelburg, Mary Wendelburg Cimbalnick and Donna Wendelburg, all of Wisconsin; and wonderful in-laws including three sisters-in-law and one brother-in-law. For many years, Marion operated a small business from her home called Black Cat Ceramics and she enjoyed cake decorating. She worked at the former Anna State Hospital and retired from RAVE in 1991, after 16 years of service. She was a Meals On Wheels volunteer and a very active member of the Evangelical Presbyterian Church in Anna, especially in organizing the church library. She inspired many while she fought a long battle with cancer. She was a witness to Christ until her death. Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 22, 2003, in Evangelical Presbyterian Church in Anna, with the Rev. Steve Wilkinson officiating. Interment will be in Anna Cemetery. Friends may visit from 6 to 8 p.m. today in Lutz and Rendleman Funeral Home in Anna and after 1 p.m. Tuesday at the church. Memorials may be made to First Evangelical Presbyterian Church of Anna for the development of a children's home or church camp.

Betty Sharp
JONESBORO -- Betty Ann Sharp, 40, the daughter of Jack and Betty Baggott Sharp was born Sept. 16, 1962, in Granite City, and passed away Friday, July 18, 2003, in Jonesboro Healthcare Center. She is survived by her mother, Betty of Jonesboro; one brother and sister-in-law, Billy and Pam Sharp of Jonesboro; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Nancy Sweitzer of Jonesboro, Jackie and Wayne Drew of Carbondale, and Barbara and Harold Smith of Jonesboro; three nieces, Jennifer Sharp, Betsy and husband Jon Oxford, and Heather Smith; three nephews, Jeremy Smith, Dylan and Darin Sharp; two great nieces, Brylce Oxford and Brystol Thomas and one great nephew, Ryan Thomas. She was preceded in death by her father. Services will be at 1:30 p.m. today, July 21, 2003, in the chapel of Hileman Funeral Home, with the Rev. Paul Sadler officiating. Friends may call from 11 a.m. until the funeral hour today. Interment will be in St. John's Cemetery. Hileman Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Nola Stefan
JOHNSTON CITY -- Nola Stefan, 88, of Johnston City, died at 10:15 a.m. Sunday, July 20, 2003, at Parkway Manor in Marion. Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday July 22, 2003, at the Murman and Wilson Funeral Home in Johnston City, with the Rev. Joey Rhodes officiating. Burial will be in the Lakeview Cemetery in Johnston City. Visitation will be from 9 to 11 a.m. Tuesday July 22, 2003, at the funeral home. Nola was born on Oct. 17, 1914, in Johnston City, the daughter of Lewis and Ethel (Marks) Williams. She married Steve Stefan on July 1, 1938, in Henderson, Ky. He preceded her in death on March 26, 1972. Nola was a homemaker and worked at the Johnston City City Hall. She is survived by one brother, Harold Williams of Herrin; one sister, Helen Nesler of Herrin; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Ivan Eugene Williams and Harlie Williams; and one sister, Trecile Harnagel.

Violet E. Massie
CARBONDALE -- Violet Elaine Massie, 59, died at 6:22 p.m. Tuesday, July 15, 2003, in Memorial Hospital of Carbondale. Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday in Faith Temple Church of God in Christ, with Bishop Hugh E. Cawthon and Pastor Elder Stephen M. Robinson Sr. officiating. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today and from 9 to 11 a.m. Monday at the church. Jackson Funeral Home in Carbondale is in charge of arrangements.

Betty Ann Sharp
JONESBORO -- Betty Ann Sharp, 40, the daughter of Jack and Betty Baggott Sharp, was born Sept. 16, 1962, in Granite City, and passed away Friday, July 18, 2003, in Jonesboro Heathcare Center. Wanda Lorraine Winn Stewart
MARION -- Wanda Lorraine Winn Stewart, 82, of West Union, S. C., formerly of Marion, passed away at 11:50 a.m. Friday, July 18, 2003, in The Inn of Seneca. Private services will be held. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery in Marion. Blue Funeral Home in Marion is in charge of the arrangements. Mrs. Stewart was born Feb. 12, 1921, in Marion to Everett and Zona Nicholson Winn. Survivors include sons, Ronnie Stewart of Tinley Park, Tommy Stewart of Marion and Eddie Stewart of Marietta, S. C.; daughters, Mary Ann Phillips of Jacksonville, Ark., Judy Plate of Chester, N. J., Anita Nicholson of West Union, S. C., Linda Simpson of Hot Springs Village, Ark., Cindy Minahan of Wagner, S. D., Katy Butler of Walhalla, S. C., and Pat Piekal of Hot Springs, Ark.; and brother, Clyde Wesley Winn of Marion. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Leroy Stewart; son, Steve Stewart; brothers, Orman, Jack and Vernell Winn; sisters, Evelyn Moore and Allein Hutzler.

Mildred Stanford
GOREVILLE -- Mildred Stanford, 79, of Goreville passed away at 6:20 p.m. Wednesday, July 16, 2003, at her residence. Her wishes were to be cremated. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Southern Illinois and may be sent in c/o Blue Funeral Home, P. O. Box 411, Marion, IL 62959. Blue Funeral Home in Goreville is in charge of arrangements. Mrs. Stanford was born on Feb. 24, 1924, in Lola, Ky., to Gobel and Arley Singleton Pearson. She married Harry Stanford on Nov. 10, 1941, in Charles, Mo., and he survives. Other survivors include her daughters, Nedra and Ed Shue of Goreville, Linda and Tim Philpott of Torrence, Calif., and Brenda and John Cosgrave of Joliet; son, Skip Stanford of Joliet; grandchildren, Jay, Jenifer, Ross, Randy and Michelle; five great-grandchildren; brother, Robert Pearson of Mabank, Texas; sisters, Anna Lee and Art Miskowski of Goreville; and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents. Mrs. Stanford's hobbies included crocheting, and she loved spending time with her great-grandchildren.

Clara Hess Cappellano Gulley
CARTERVILLE -- Clara D. Hess Cappellano Gulley, 85, of Sikeston, Mo., formerly of Carterville, died Saturday, July 19, 2003, in Sikeston Convalescent Center. Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday, July 21, 2003, in Riggin-Pillatsch Funeral Home in Carterville, with Sister Naomi Carter officiating. Burial will be in East Lawn Cemetery in Energy. Friends may call after 11 a.m. Monday in the funeral home. Clara was born on April 4, 1918, in Williamson County to Hiram Gorton and Effie Thomas Hess. She married Joseph Cappellano on June 11, 1937. He passed away on Jan. 15, 1972. She then married Arthur Gulley, and he passed away March 8, 2002. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Pamela Sue and Kenneth Melvin of Sikeston; two granddaughters, Marcia Teffertillar of Carterville and Jamie Murphy of Lilbourn, Mo.; and one brother, Gilbert Hess of Carterville. She was preceded in death by her parents, two husbands, 10 brothers and sisters. Clara was a certified nursing assistant working in home health care. She was a Pentecostal. She also was a member of the Rebekah Lodge in Carterville. She enjoyed working in her garden and sharing the harvest with her neighbors and friends, and won the award for the tallest corn. She enjoyed horseback trail riding, riding well into her 70s.

Lucille Owens
SPARTA -- Lucille I. Owens, 92, died at 8:15 p.m. Thursday, July 17, 2003, in Randolph County Care Center. Services will be at 1:30 p.m. today in Wilson's Funeral Home in Tilden, with the Rev. Wilbur M. Franklin Sr. officiating. Burial will be in Tilden Cemetery. Visitation will be from 7:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Tilden Scholarship Fund.
