WALTONVILLE -- Wilma I. Laur, 93, died at 4:25 p.m. Friday, July 18, 2003, in Mount Vernon Countryside Manor. Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Newell Funeral Home, with the Rev. Robert Sledge officiating. Burial will be in Maple Hill Cemetery in Sesser. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the cemetery.

VIENNA -- Nellie Lavada Skelton, 95, died at 9:35 a.m. Saturday, July 19, 2003, in Hillview Health Care Center. Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday in Bailey Funeral Home, with the Rev. Steve Lindsay officiating. Burial will be in Vienna Fraternal Cemetery. Visitation will be after 5 p.m. today at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Fellowship Baptist Church.

TILDEN -- Howard C. Stewart, 87, died at 11:55 a.m. Thursday, July 17, 2003, in Sparta Community Hospital. Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Grandcott Presbyterian Church in Coulterville, with the Rev. Dennis Hamilton officiating. Burial will be in Coulterville City Cemetery. HARRISBURG -- Frank Gollick, 81, died at 10:38 a.m. Friday, July 18, 2003, in Harrisburg Medical Center. Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in Sunset Lawn Cemetery, with the Rev. Dewayne Taylor officiating. Memorials may be made to the Dorrisville Baptist Church building fund. Sloan Funeral Home in Galatia is in charge of arrangements.

Vinnie Grace Lamping
CARTERVILLE -- Vinnie Grace Lamping, age 99, of Deerfield Beach, Fla., formerly of Carterville, died Thursday, July 17, 2003, at her home in Deerfield Beach. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 22, 2003, at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Carterville, with Father Richard Mohr officiating. Burial will be in Barham Cemetery in Marion. Friends may call after 9 a.m. Tuesday at Riggin-Pillatsch Funeral Home in Carterville. A rosary will be said at 10:15 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Grace was born on Nov. 28, 1903, in Williamson County to John William and Olive McDonald Fleming and was raised by her stepmother, Ora Skaggs Fleming. She married William James Lamping on Dec. 27, 1950. He passed away in December of 1968. She is survived by a sister-in-law, Helen Fleming of Carterville; six nieces, Mary Elizabeth Michaels of Vandalia, Pat Davis and Martha Panky, both of St. Elmo, Ann Durham of Moorestown, N. J., Carolyn Ellis of Homewood and Colleen Bogard of Carterville; 10 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; three brothers, Judd, Lester and Walter Fleming; two sisters, Mary Lou Fleming and Lyla Lannom; two infant brothers; stepson, Jay Lamping; stepdaughter, Carol Schulte; and one granddaughter. She graduated from Marion High School in 1922. After graduation from Brown's Business College, Marion, in 1923, she worked for various government agencies in Washington, D. C., for 25 years. She began as a stenographer in the War Department, advanced to become a confidential investigation stenographer for the Honorable Kent Keller, and later moved to the Department of Agriculture. In 1941, she began working with the Labor Relations Department, where she served first on the Senate and then the House Small Business Committee. She ended her government service with a short stint as the chief administrative service in the War Department, where she had originally begun her Washington, D. C., career. It was during her work with the House Small Business Committee that she came into contact with the president of Master Photo Dealers and Finishers Association and was offered the position of assistant to the executive manager of MPDFA, but would have to move to Jackson, Mich. She ultimately accepted that position in the late fall of 1947, and received much acclaim for her work nationwide with MPDFA. While working in Jackson a good friend introduced her to widower William James Lamping of Detroit, Mich., whom she later married. Mrs. Lamping was an avid golfer and was active in the women's division of the Union Printcraft International Golf Association in Washington, D. C. She was president of that association from 1938-1945, chairman of the Women's Golf Committee at Prince George Maryland Golf and Country Club, and five-time women's champion. She, with her husband, was an active member and player at the Detroit Golf and Country Club and Deercreek Country Club in Deerfield Beach, Fla., winning many trophies. She also enjoyed boating in Florida. She was a member of the St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Deerfield Beach, Fla. Memorial contributions can be made to Vitas Hospice, 5420 N. Robert L. 'Bob' Melvin
WEST FRANKFORT -- Robert L. "Bob" Melvin, 77, died Thursday, Aug. 28, 2003, in his residence. He was born April 20, 1926, in Cave Township east of West Frankfort, to Roy W. and Elizabeth R. (Clem) Melvin. He married Anna (Thomas) Melvin on Feb. 22, 1947, in West Frankfort. Survivors include his wife, Anna; three daughters and sons-in-law, Pam and Jim Clark of Humboldt, Iowa, Annetta and Willie Carter and Roberta and Mike McLaren, all of West Frankfort; one son, Chris Melvin of West Frankfort; seven grandsons and their wives, Steve and Angela Marvel of Pleasant Plains, Chad and Leslie Clark of Renton, Wash., Jeff Marvel, Josh and Sarah Marvel, Matt Carter, Todd Carter, Mike and Brenda McLaren all of West Frankfort; one granddaughter and her husband, Kaci and Jason Beavers of West Frankfort, thirteen great-grandchildren, Adam Robert and Andrea Marvel, Taylor and Tyler Marvel, Sierra Marvel, Lauren Mattingly, Zoe Stroud, Evan and Abbey Marvel, Amber and Michael McLaren, Alexa and Aaryn Beavers; and two brothers and one sister-in-law, Burton and Thelma Melvin of Benton and J. B. "Chink" Melvin of Hillsboro. He is preceded in death by his parents; sister and brother-in-law, Dodie and Jim Mandrell; and a grandson, Larry Scott Marvel. Mr. Melvin attended Reed Town Grade School and Thompsonville High School. He joined the U. S. Army Air Corps in July 1944. He went to basic training at Fort Sheridan, and then served in Guam and Saipan with the 6th Bomb Wing as an aerial gunner. He later became a military police officer and was discharged Aug. 16, 1946. He was a coal miner for 45 years, with 22 years in the UMWA, having worked at Old Ben 11, 9 and 24. He was a foreman at Old Ben 24 from 1966 to 1975, before taking a position with the Department of Mines and Minerals as a state mine inspector. He earned 11 certifications from the Illinois State Mining Industry. He retired in 1989. Bob was a 32nd-degree Mason and a 50-year member of Akin Lodge 749 AF&AM. He was a member of the Apostolic Faith Assembly Church, and was saved when he was 14 years old in 1940. Bob was an avid outdoorsman. He loved to hunt, fish and tell tall tales. He never met a stranger, he had a wonderful gift for gab and was loved and adored by his family. He was a wonderful grandpa who adored his grandchildren and great-grandchildren almost as much as they adored him. He will be greatly missed by all. Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday in Parker-Reedy Funeral Home, with the Rev. Lloyd Whittaker officiating. Burial will be in Denning Cemetery, with military rites by the American Legion of Thompsonville. Visitation will be after 5 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home, with Masonic rites at 7 p.m. by the Akin Lodge 749.

William Lloyd Robinson Jr.
CARTERVILLE -- William Lloyd Robinson Jr., 77, of Carterville, died Wednesday, Aug. 27, 2003, at Memorial Hospital of Carbondale. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 30, 2003, at Riggin-Pillatsch Funeral Home, with the Rev. Paul Tirey and the Rev. Maurice Swinford officiating. Burial will be in Willow Rest Cemetery in Carterville. Friends may call after 6 p.m. today at Riggin-Pillatsch Funeral Home in Carterville. Memorial contributions in memory of Mr. Robinson can be made to the Muscular Dystrophy Association or the Carmi Children's Home. Lloyd was born on April 19, 1926, in Colp, the son of William Lloyd Robinson Sr. and Irene Cagle Robinson. He married Fayetta McKenzie on May 4, 1944, in Carterville. He is survived by his wife, Fayetta; sons, Mike and wife, Ronda Robinson, of Carterville and Danny Robinson of Lexington, Ky.; daughters, Sandy and husband, Lee Rogulich, of Evanston and Lois Elliott of Herrin; grandchildren, Ashley Robinson of Lexington, Ky., Randy Elliott of Blairsville, Josh and wife, Alecia, of Carterville, David and wife, Jenny Robinson, of Carbondale, Brad and wife, Jodi Robinson, of Carterville, Brian and wife, Jennifer Robinson, of Carterville, Ryan Rogulich of Evanston and Susan (Mike) Wetherington of Carterville, Ill.; great-grandchildren, Emily Robinson, Weston Robinson, Burke Robinson and Gracie Wetherington; one brother, Billie (Joyce) Robinson of Hurst; and many nieces and nephews. Also survived by special in-laws, Maurice and Velda Fozzard, Billy and Norma McKenzie and Margie Hicks. He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Lloyd Ray Robinson; two brothers and one sister. Lloyd was a member of the Herrin First Baptist Church, where he served for several years as a Sunday school teacher. He honorably served his country in World War II with the U. S. Army in Germany and France. He was a member of the United Mine Workers and retired from Freeman Coal Co. in 1987 after 42 years of service. Lloyd was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed camping, fishing, and playing country and bluegrass music with his family. Lloyd's entire life revolved around his dedication to his family.

Mark Finley Loomis
ANNA -- Mark Loomis, 49, of Belleville, formerly of Anna, died Saturday, Aug. 23, 2003, in his home in Belleville. Visitation for Mark was Thursday in Lutz and Rendleman Funeral Home in Anna. His funeral will take place at 10 a.m. today in the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Habitat for Humanity. Mark was born June 11, 1954, in Chicago, to Dr. Carroll and Nola Faye Loomis of Anna who survive. He is the beloved older brother to Ben Loomis of Carbondale, Rebecca Loomis, M. D. of Clermont, Ga., Dan and Sarah Loomis Mack, M. D. of Grayson, Ga., Mary K. and Nicholas Loomis and her son of Clermont, Ga., Mark and Kari Loomis Hedin of Atlanta, Ga., and John Loomis. Mark was a CPA employed by the state of Illinois. Mark attended early grade school in Michigan. When he was 9 years old, the family moved to Ethiopia, where he continued school until 10th grade. He graduated from Anna-Jonesboro High School in 1972. He attended University of Illinois for four years and then transferred and graduated cum laude from Georgia State University in Atlanta with degrees in accounting and finance. Mark completed requirements for certified public account at SIU in Carbondale in 2000. Mark had wide-ranging interests. He was an avid swimmer and while living in Atlanta, he ran six Peachtree Road Races. Mark volunteered with Habitat for Humanity in Atlanta and did carpentry work with a group called the Mad Housers, who built homeless shelters. This year in Belleville, he faithfully attended concerts of the St. Louis Symphony. Mark attended the Lutheran Church in Belleville and was a frequent visitor at the Presbyterian Church in Cobden. Mark had strong writing skills. Just two months ago, he represented the family as he gave a tribute to his parents on the occasion of their golden anniversary. Mark was loved by family and friends, who appreciated his gentle compassionate nature, creative mind and wonderful sense of humor. Mark played an important role as uncle to Nicholas Loomis, who adored him. Mark will be sorely missed by the Loomis family, as well as by his friends and coworkers. Lutz and Rendleman Funeral Home in Anna is in charge of arrangements.

Harry Thetford Jr.
HERRIN -- Harry Thetford Jr., 80, of Herrin, passed away at 12:40 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 27, 2003, in his home in Herrin. Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 30, 2003, in Van Natta Funeral Home, with the Rev. Don Colson officiating. Interment will follow in Herrin City Cemetery in Herrin. military rites will be conducted by American Legion and VFW. Masonic rites will be conducted by Herrin Masonic Lodge 693. Visitation will be from 12:30 p.m. until time of services Saturday at Van Natta Funeral Home. Harry was born in Hurst-Bush to Harry and Viola (Murphy) Thetford on Dec. 3, 1922. He married Leona Throgmorton in Crystal Lake on March 17, 1990. Survivors include his loving wife of 13 years; two daughters, Lorna Thetford and fiance, Steve Baker, of Herrin and Joan and Chris John of Cary; one son, Johnny and Julie Wallace of Crystal Lake; seven grandchildren, Jonathan Thetford of Herrin, Christopher, Matthew and Thomas John of Cary, Jenna, Jillian and John Thomas Wallace of Crystal Lake; sister-in-law, Deloris Thetford of Herrin and many loving friends and family. Harry was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Charlie Thetford and one nephew, Randy Thetford. In lieu of flowers, Harry's wishes were to give memorial donations to his family. Harry Thetford Jr. entered the U. S. Army to serve our beloved nation from Jan. 27, 1942 to Oct. 18, 1945. He fought diligently to assist our troops in maintaining our freedom by actively participating in the invasion of Africa and the invasion of Italy. Harry worked as a high-line construction employee for the Henckle MaCory Co. He worked for 47 years and retired in 1992. Harry belonged to the Grand Lodge of New Paris, Ohio, Antioch Temple 32nd-degree Mason of Dayton, Ohio, Masonic lodge of New Paris, Ohio, and Shriners of Dayton, Ohio.

Budd H. Waller
ANNA -- Budd H. Waller, 82, died at 6:10 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 27, 2003, in Union County Hospital in Anna. He was born April 2, 1921, in Hamilton County, the son of Oscar and Della (Ramsey) Waller. He married Ann G. Warren on Aug. 18, 1944, and she preceded him in death on Nov. 11, 1985. Mr. Waller worked as a broker in real estate, an auctioneer and a farmer. He was an avid mule racer and started the mule racing event at the Union County Fair. He was a member and past master of Plainfield Lodge 536 AF&AM, a member of the Little Spring Baptist Church in Thompsonville and a member of Carroll P. Foster VFW Post 3455. He was a veteran of the U. S. Army from 1939 to 1945, proudly serving at Taboguilla Island off the coast of Panama. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Cheryl and John Ligon of Anna; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Robert Waller of Plainfield, Richard and Mary Jane Waller of Anna, and Roger and Tina Waller of Anna; eight grandchildren, Debbie Stimac of Plainfield, Tina Dudley of Goreville, Jenny Cunningham of Anna, Brandi Curry of Baxter, Tenn., Bryant Waller of Dongola, Natalie, Carrie and John Michael Ligon, all of Anna; six great-grandchildren; one sister, Kathleen Casey of Anna; nieces; nephews; and other relatives. He was preceded in death by his wife; parents; one grandson, John Robert Waller; twelve brothers and sisters; and one daughter-in-law, Joyce Waller. Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 30, 2003, in Crain Funeral Home in Anna, with the Rev. Paul Sadler officiating. Interment will be in the Alto Pass Cemetery, with military honors by Carroll P. Foster VFW Post 3455. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today, Aug. 29, 2003, and until 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home, with Masonic services at 7 p.m. today by the Anna Lodge 520 AF&AM. Memorial contributions may be made to the Alto Pass Cemetery association or the charity of the donor's choice.

Jewell Belcher McKee
HERRIN -- Jewell Belcher McKee, 77, of Kelseyville, Calif., former Herrinite, passed away at 7:40 a.m. Friday, Aug. 15, 2003, in her home. Jewell fought a valiant fight against cancer, but her life's motto was, "When God is ready for me, I am ready for Him." For 35 years she was lead technician at Varian Associates in Palo Alto, Calif., working on the Night Vision Goggle Project. She retired in March 1990. She was president of Kelseyville Senior Citizens and served on the Clear Lake Gleaners Board of Directors. She will be missed as the lady who was there to do whatever she could for anyone in need. Jewell furnished Cuddly Bears for Lake County abused children. She was well known as Kelseyville's Imelda Marcos for the hundreds of shoes she owned. Jewell was born May 9, 1926, in Sunnyside in Herrin to Earl and Opal Belcher. She is survived by her daughters, Judi Mello-Anderson and Suzanne Coleman (adopted), both of Kelseyville; a sister, Miriam Messina of Kelseyville; a brother and sister-in-law, James D. and Beverly Belcher of Wycliffe, Ky.; a grandson, Derek Mello of Fremont, Calif.; two great-granddaughters, Kyllie and Peyton Mello of Fremont, Calf.; three nephews and their families, Paul "Skip" Wooten of Kelseyville, Calif., Dan and Bonnie Belcher and children, J. T., John Curtis, and Ethan, all of Barlow, Ky., Michael Ridgway and daughter Ruby Jane, both of Carbondale; nieces and their families, Yolanda and Bobby Myers and children, Jamie and Paige Kirkpatrick and Camden, Keith and Todd Myers, all of Royalton, Debbie Howser and children, Erica, Brian and Allison Travelstead, all of Herrin, Aleta Dowell and son, Joshua and Brandon of Lusby, Md., Cheryl and Roger Griggs and children, Roger Jr., Paul and Jesse and his wife Lindsey, all of Greenville, Tenn., Loretta and Danny Crisel and children, Tabetha Ranson and Carol Ann Lamb, all of Mumford, Tenn.; three grand-nieces and a family, Joan Wooten of Kelseyville, Calif., Rachel Galloway of Shawnee, Kan., and Becky and Sean Cheek and daughters, Elizabeth Ann and Mary Katherine Cheek, all of Omaha, Neb.; and special friends, Jeanette Sollami, Jewell Dean Murphy, Mary Farley, and Claude and Alice Smith, all of Herrin. She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Earl T. "Boy" Belcher; and one sister, Helen J. Ridgway. A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in Union Gospel Mission in Herrin. A luncheon will follow. The family wishes to express thanks and appreciating for your prayers, kindness and loving words of sympathy. In lieu of flowers, expressions of love may be made to Hospice or the charity of choice.

Lawrence James Weber
MARION -- Lawrence James Weber, 71, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 27, 2003, at the Heartland Regional Medical Center in Marion after a long battle with cancer. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 30, 2003, in Maple Funeral Home in Channahon. Burial will be in Willard Grove Cemetery in Channahon. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Blue Funeral Home in Marion in is charge of the local arrangements. Mr. Weber was born on Aug. 29, 1931, in Edgewood to John and Ella Weber. He married Doris Ramsey in Edgewood. He is survived by his beloved wife of 50 years, Doris Weber of Marion; daughters and sons-in-law, Pam and Ron Eblin of Camargo, Theresa and Bob Hand and Chris and Keith Houchin all of Minooka and Donna and Steve Mauk of Channahon; grandchildren, Julie and Mark Wigall of Tuscola, Jason, Kara and Dan Houchin of Minooka, Amber and Tara Mauk of Channahon; sisters, Mary Thiel of Marion, Pat Like of Pesotum, Lorrie Thiel of Channahon, and Eleanor Rizzuto of Tinley Park; and brothers, Jerry Weber of Clayton, Ind., and David Weber of Coppres Cove, Texas. He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Ellery, Marion, Mark and John, Jr.; two granddaughters, Tracy Eblin and Amie Hand; and a grandson, Benjamin Houchin. Mr. Weber was a distinguished veteran of the U. S. Army, having served from 1955 to 1957. He was employed at USI Chemical Plant in Tuscola and later at the Northern Petro Chemical Plant in Morris, before retiring to the Lake of Egypt in 1989. Mr. Weber enjoyed fishing, woodworking and his children and grandchildren. He was an active volunteer at the Food Pantry in Marion.

Lorraine Ozburn
PINCKNEYVILLE -- Lorraine Ozburn, 88, died at 7:50 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 27, 2003, in Pinckneyville Community Hospital. She was born Aug. 17, 1915, in Du Quoin, a daughter of Bryan and Irene Marlow Eaton. She was united in marriage to Howard W. Ozburn on Nov. 1, 1939, in Perryville, Mo., and he preceded her in death on July 12, 1978. Lorraine was a homemaker and an active member of the First Baptist Church of Pinckneyville. She enjoyed quilting, reading and watching sports. Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Bill and Mary Lou of Pinckneyville and Donald and Sandy of Winnebago; three grandsons and their wives, Todd Engels, David and Melanie Ozburn and Michael Ozburn and Mary Hadley; two granddaughters and their husbands, Lynn and William Huffhine and Susan and Wade Campbell; six great-grandchildren, Kirsten and Britta Engels, Jessica, Zachariah and Nathanael Ozburn, and Henry Campbell; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Virginia McCrary and Geneva and Harold Helvey, all of Pinckneyville; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Howard, and a great-grandson in infancy. Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 30, 2003, in the First Baptist Church in Pinckneyville, with the Rev. Mark Lee officiating. Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Park Cemetery in Du Quoin. Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. today and from 8 to 9 a.m. Saturday in Pyatt-Harrawood Funeral Home in Pinckneyville, and then from 9:30 to 10 a.m. Saturday in the church. In lieu of flowers, a memorial will be established.

Reba Browning
ELDORADO -- Reba Browning, 95, died at 12:10 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 28, 2003, in Fountain View Nursing Home. Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in Watson Funeral Home, with burial in Union Ridge Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Mrs. Browning was a homemaker. She was a member of Eldorado Gospel Assembly Church. She was born May 26, 1908, in Gallatin County to Lawrence and Essie (Mobley) Givens. She married Elmer Browning. He died in June 1981. Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, James and Lucretia Browning of New Haven; four daughters and three sons-in-law, Dorothy Ewan of Herrin, Shirly and Kermit Bates of Carmi, Shelby and Revis Buster of Norris City and Bonnie and Jimmy Jack Sisk of Junction; one son-in-law, Cletus Drone of Ridgway; one sister, Evelyn Wathen; 12 grandchildren, Fred Kendall, J. Brent Browning, Elaine Browning, Mark Drone, Eric Ewan, Denny Bates, Tim Drone, Alice Ewan, Phillip Drone, Lara Odom, Susan Kanady and Jamie Sisk; 17 great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews. One daughter, Patsy Drone, one son-in-law, Stanley Ewan, and two sisters also preceded her in death.

CARBONDALE -- Kimberly Prost Gresham, 46, of Snellville, Ga., formerly of Carbondale, died Thursday, Aug. 28, 2003. She is survived by her husband of 26 years, Ed Gresham; daughters, Laura and Lisa; son-in-law, Stephen; granddaughter, Taylor; parents, Wally and Patty Prost of Carbondale; sisters, Terri Prost of Tucker, Ga. and Cheryl True of De Soto; brothers, Joe Prost of Winder, Ga., and Jeff Tolbert of Chicago; grandmother, Ruby Laughman, and aunts, Mary Prost and Patricia Loy, all of Murphysboro; mother-in-law, Bonnie McGarrity of East Point, Ga. A longtime resident of Gwinnett County, Georgia, Kim was a bookkeeper for Builder's Steel, where she had worked for 12 years. She was a former member of the Snellville Park and Recreation Board, as well as the Snellville Days Committee. A loving and dedicated wife, mother, daughter, sister, grandmother and wonderful friend, Kim leaves behind a multitude of friends and will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 30, 2003, in Grace Fellowship Church, 1440 Dogwood Road, Snellville, GA, 30078, with the Rev. Randy Rainwater officiating. The family will visit with friends immediately following the service. Memorials may be made to Grace Fellowship Church in honor of Kim Gresham.
