Everett Dean Phoenix
AVA -- Everett Dean Phoenix, 65, died at 8:05 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 28, 2003, in St. Joseph Memorial Hospital in Murphysboro. Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday in Wilson's Funeral Home in Ava, with the Rev. Jeff Wiggs officiating. Burial will be in Ava Evergreen Cemetery. Visitation will be after 5 p.m. today and from 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday in the funeral home. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church building fund. Mr. Phoenix was the retired owner of Phoenix Plumbing and Heating. He was a veteran, and was a member of the First Baptist Church. He was born Aug. 20, 1938 in Ava to Fred Andrew and Josephine (Cheatham) Phoenix. He married Barbara J. Cross on June 6, 1959, in Ava. She survives. Other survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Denise and James Stewart of Ava; one son and daughter-in-law, Dennis and Terri Phoenix of Ava; five grandchildren, Brandy, Arizona, Dustin, Caleb and Makayla; and six brothers, Irvin E., Robert E., Raymond C., Edward W. and Fred J. Phoenix, all of Ava, and Roy L. Phoenix of Murphysboro. His parents preceded him in death.

Edna D. Jeralds
HURST -- Edna D. Jeralds, 75, died at 10:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 26, 2003, at home. Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday in Walker Funeral Home in Hurst, with burial in Blairsville Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the American Legion or the Order of the Eastern Star. Mrs. Jeralds was a homemaker. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and the Order of the Eastern Star. She was born Dec. 8, 1927, in Hurst to Bert and Grace (Porter) Taylor. She married Luther Jeralds. He died Nov. 28, 1993. Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Sandy and Tim Byrne of Rinion, Ga.; two sons and daughters-in-law, Jesse and Marilyn Jeralds of Johnston City and Delbert and Carolyn Jeralds of New Burnside; 10 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Thelma Annear and Mary Louise Fassel. Her parents, two brothers and one sister also preceded her in death.

John Robinson Jr.
MURPHYSBORO -- John Robinson Jr., 74, passed away at 10:25 a.m. at St. Joseph Memorial Hospital in Murphysboro. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 30, 2003, at Boskydell Cemetery, with military services conducted by the American Legion Post 127, VFW Posts 7190 and 2605, and Jackson County Disabled American Veterans Chapter 69. There will be no visitation. Friends are asked to go directly to the cemetery. Pettett Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Legion Post 127. John was born on March 25, 1929, in Carbondale to John Robinson Sr. and Estle (Sanders) Robinson. He served from 1951 to 1953 during the Korean conflict and attained the rank of corporal in the U. S. Army. Mr. Robinson worked for the Illinois Central Railroad for 13 years and then he worked for 28 years for the Southern Illinois University Carbondale police, retiring as a captain. He was a Baptist. He was a lifetime member of the Illinois Police Association, and a member of American Legion Post 127 of Murphysboro and VFW Post 2605 of Carbondale. John enjoyed card games with his friends at the American Legion and he also loved to fish. He is survived by his loving companion, Helen Howell of Murphysboro; very dear friends, Steve and JoAnn Will of Murphysboro; three nieces, Pamela Dunning of Medusa, Calif., Debbie Burns of Sarasota, Fla., and Lisa Fox of Middleton, Va.; three nephews, Jeff Robinson of St. Louis, John Randall of Robinson, Minn., and Bruce Lyerly of Oreana; and all his card playing buddies at the Legion. He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Ramona Lyerly; and one brother, Edward Robinson.

Robert Byrne Winthrop
DU QUOIN -- Robert Byrne Winthrop, 81, passed away at 9 p.m. Wednesday, August 27, 2003, in Marshall Browning Hospital in Du Quoin. Robert worked for 37 years as a dragline operator at Consolidated Coal Co. He attended the First Christian Church in Du Quoin. He was a member of UMWA Local 1825, life member of Du Quoin American Legion, life member of Du Quoin VFW and life member of Du Quoin Elks. He was a lieutenant junior grade in the U. S. Navy Air Corps as a pilot serving in World War II. He was born March 23, 1922, in Du Quoin, the son of John Cooper and Laura Lucy (Webb) Winthrop. He married Marian Lu (Cook) Weinberg on Oct. 27, 1945, at Paducah, and she preceded him in death on Dec. 20, 2002. He is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, John Robert and Martha Winthrop of Percy and Michael Karl and Gail Winthrop of Bellevue, Ohio; two brothers, Jack Winthrop of Allen, Texas, and Gene Winthrop of Elkville; and five grandchildren, Meagan Winthrop, Elizabeth Greenwood, Geoff Winthrop, John Winthrop and Ryan Winthrop. He was preceded in death by his parents and wife. Funeral services will be at noon, Saturday, Aug. 30, 2003, in Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin, with Dr. John Lewis officiating. Interment will be in the Sunset Memorial Park at Du Quoin, with military graveside rites conducted by Du Quoin American Legion. Friends may call from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Marshall Browning Hospital and will be accepted at the funeral home.

Walter Lindenberg
PERCY -- Walter Lindenberg, 72, died Tuesday, Aug. 26, 2003, in Memorial Hospital in Chester. Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in St. Luke's Lutheran Church in Campbell Hill, with Pastor Howard Ellis officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today and from 7:30 a.m. to noon Saturday in McDaniel Funeral Home in Percy, and from noon to 2 p.m. Saturday at the church. Memorials may be made to the American Bible Society or the cemetery. Mr. Lindenberg was retired from Spartan Printing in 1993 as a pressman. He was a member of St. Luke's Lutheran Church in Campbell Hill, the Steeleville American Legion and Chester VFW, and was an Army veteran of the Korean War. He was born Jan. 13, 1931, in Chester to Edward Lindenberg and Frieda Rickenberg. He married Georgia Grohman on Oct. 16, 1967, in Chester. She survives. Other survivors include one daughter, Glenda Wade of Lutz, Fla.; two sons, Ricky Knop and Jesse Doerr, both of Percy; one sister, Mildred Castens of Chester; and one grandchild. His parents, two brothers and one sister preceded him death.

Juanita Manus
JONESBORO -- Juanita Manus, 82, passed away Thursday, Aug. 28, 2003, in Carbondale Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Carbondale. She was born July 17, 1921 in Alto Pass, the daughter of Luther and Enid (Zimmerman) Rhodes. She married Lester Manus on Nov. 12, 1944, in Osceola, Ark. She worked for many years at the Florsheim Shoe Co. in Anna. Survivors include two sons and one daughter-in-law, Clifford Manus of Anna and Darrell and Cheryl Manus of Jonesboro; one daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Deon Egner of Carbondale; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two sisters, Jewell Gardner of Casper, Wyo., and Ruth Phillips of Houston, Texas; and one sister-in-law, Eunice Smithey of Harritage, Tenn. Mrs. Manus was preceded in death by her husband on March 12, 1996. Services will be at noon Saturday in the chapel of Hileman Funeral Home, with the Rev. Jim Stamp officiating. Interment will be in Jonesboro Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday at the funeral home.

Payton LeGrand
MURPHYSBORO -- Payton Joseph LeGrand was stillborn at 9:45 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 24, 2003, at St. Mary's Hospital in St. Louis. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 30, 2003, at Pettett Funeral Home, with Father Gary Gummersheimer officiating. Burial will be in St. Andrew Cemetery. Friends may call from 10 a.m. until the hour of services Saturday at the funeral home. Survivors include his parents, Jason C. LeGrand and Carol M. Schanzle of Murphysboro; two brothers, Eben Brooks and Cameron Tucker, both at home; grandparents, R. J. LeGrand of Murphysboro, Becky Edwards, Adamsville, Tenn., Ron and Eileen Williams of Murphysboro; great grandparents, Lee and Charlette Brooks, Chaffee, Mo., Lavana LeGrand, Benton, Mo., Marie Karch, Glen Ellyn, Ruby Patterson, Louisville, Ky., and Marion and George Schanzle of Carmi; two uncles, Jeremy LeGrand of the U. S. Army, stationed in Germany, Scott Edwards of Adamsville, Tenn. and 5 aunts Ashley Edwards of Adamsville, Tenn., Jennifer Earls, Mary Schanzle-Stack, Elizabeth Richardson, Merle Taylor and Rhonda McGill. He was preceded in death by his grandfathers, Charles Schanzle and William LeGrand; his great grandmother, Mary Brooks and his uncle, Joseph Williams.

Charles Dale Butler
ELDORADO -- Charles Dale Butler, 77, died at 9:55 p.m. Monday, Aug. 25, 2003, in Estelle's Hospice House in Ocala, Fla. Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in Gaskins Funeral Home in Harrisburg, with the Rev. Nomis Summers officiating. Burial will be in Raleigh Masonic Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Mr. Butler was an administrative assistant to the president of Southern Illinois University Carbondale for 35 years. He was a Navy veteran of World War II. He was born in Eldorado to William Franklin Butler and Alice Karnes. Survivors include many nieces and nephews. Two brothers, Mark and Gene Butler, and one sister, Eustotia Summers, preceded him in death.

Betty June Branch
HERRIN -- Betty June Branch, 73, of Haines City, Fla., passed away at 2:35 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 26, 2003, in Good Sheppard Hospice Center in Auburndale, Fla. Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 30, 2003, in Van Natta Funeral Home, with the Rev. Lee Lovett officiating. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery in Carterville. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today in the funeral home. Betty was born Aug. 17, 1930, in Zeigler. Survivors include one sister-in-law, Lomelda Dwyer of Herrin; special friends, Mr. and Mrs. Bill Barker of Haines City; and many loving friends and family members. Betty was preceded in death by her stepfather and mother, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Barnhill.

Colleen Morel
HARRISBURG -- Colleen Sue Morel, 50, died at 11:53 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 27, 2003, at home. Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Sunday in Bailey Funeral Home in Vienna, with burial in Liberty Cemetery, south of Harrisburg. Visitation will be after 6 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 805 W. DeYoung, Marion, IL 62959.

Billy Kirk
MOUNT VERNON -- Billy Bob Kirk, 76, died Tuesday, Aug. 26, 2003, at home. Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in Kirk Cemetery in Ina, with the Rev. Brad Ryan officiating. There will be no visitation. Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes. Association. Johnston Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Doris Rogers
OLMSTED -- Doris L. Rogers, 83, died at 9 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 27, 2003, in Southeast Missouri Hospital in Cape Girardeau. Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday in Barkett Funeral Home, with the Rev. John Windings officiating. Burial will be in Green Lawn Memorial Gardens in Villa Ridge. Visitation will be after 5 p.m. today at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Alzeimer's Disease Association, 620 E. Walnut St., Carbondale, IL 62901.

Mageous Wright
CRAINVILLE -- Mageous Sabestein Wright, infant son of Mike and Melissa Wright of Crainville, died Tuesday, Aug. 26, 2003, in St. Mary's Hospital in St. Louis. Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Meredith Funeral Home in Carbondale, with Michael Wright officiating. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery in Carbondale. Visitation will be from noon to 2 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the family.

Robert Daisy
METROPOLIS -- Robert "Bob" Daisy, 84, formerly of Metropolis and Golconda, died at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 27, 2003, in Heritage Manor in El Paso. Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday in the First United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Wesley Osborn officiating. Burial will be in Jonesboro Cemetery. There will be no visitation. Memorials may be made to the El Paso Rescue Squad, the Golconda Golden Circle, P. O. Box 246, Golconda, IL 62938, or to the First United Methodist Church, 100 E. Fifth St., Metropolis, IL 62960.

Mary Everman
WOODLAWN -- Mary Everman, 88, formerly of Ashley, died at 11:15 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 28, 2003, in Nature's Trail Health Care Center in Mount Vernon. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in Odd Fellows Cemetery, with the Rev. Harold Engel officiating. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today in Campagna Funeral Home in Ashley. Memorials may be made to the Woodlawn Christian Church building fund.
