DU QUOIN -- Lillian V. Conaway, 85, died at 11:50 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 16, 2003, in Marshall Browning Hospital in Du Quoin. Arrangements are incomplete at Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin.

DU QUOIN -- Elbert John Woods, 84, died at 3:53 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 16, 2003, in Marshall Browning Hospital in Du Quoin. Arrangements are incomplete at Pyatt-Harrawood and Epplin Funeral Home in Du Quoin.

Josiephine Merriweather
SANDUSKY -- Josiephine Merriweather, 73, died Tuesday, Oct. 14, 2003, in her home. Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday in Mount Tabor Missionary Baptist Church, with Pastor Robert L. James and the Rev. Stephen Lott, nephew of Mrs. Merriweather, officiating. Burial will be in Spencer Heights Memorial Park in Mounds. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the church. Sparks Funeral Home in Columbia, Mo., is in charge of arrangements. Mrs. Merriweather was born Nov. 28, 1929, in Sunflower, Miss., to the late Willie and Callie Rodgers. She had lived in Illinois for over 55 years. She married Fletcher Merriweather over 49 years ago, and he survives. Other survivors include seven sons and three daughters-in-law, Elijah and Elaine Brown of Chester, Ovell and Frances Brown and Jerome Merriweather, all of Cape Girardeau, Savoy Merriweather of St. Louis, Harvey and Clarissa Merriweather of Villa Ridge, Wesley Merriweather of Oakland, Calif., and Johnny Warren of Tamms; five daughters and two sons-in-law, Elizabeth and N. C. Bowen of Alamo, Tenn., Linda Newell of Cairo, Deborah Merriweather of Bloomington, Glena Merriweather of Tamms and Callie and Robert Ramsey of Memphis, Tenn.; four sisters and brothers-in-law, Irene and Levi Lott and Elizabeth and Robert English, all of Cleveland, Ohio, Mae Ella and Ellis Cassell and Esther B. and Perry Gillespie, all of Charleston, Mo.; one great-aunt, Alfredia Rodgers of Charleston, Mo.; a very special cousin, Arrella Harris of Tamms; 39 grandchildren; a host of great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews and cousins; other relatives; and many friends.

Betty Appleton
HERRIN -- Betty Lou Appleton, 78, of Joliet, formerly of Herrin, died at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 16, 2003, in her home with her family. Arrangements are incomplete at Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home.

James D. Rouse
CARRIER MILLS -- James D. "Jimmy" Rouse, 62, died at 1:42 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 15, 2003, in his sister's home in Harrisburg. Services will be at 1 p.m. Sunday in Felty Funeral Home, with the Rev. Derek Euarales and Bishop Leonard Duncan officiating. Burial will be in Lakeview Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday in the funeral home.

Margaret Bennett
HERRIN -- Margaret Bennett, 78, of Herrin, died at 1:35 p.m. Monday, Oct. 13, 2003, in Herrin Hospital. Margaret was born on Nov. 6, 1924, in Creal Springs, to James and Leona Lorenz Bayles. She married George R. Bennett on Dec. 19, 1941, in Charleston, Mo. He preceded her in death on June 18, 1988. She was an accountant at the Herrin Security Bank. She earlier worked for Universal Match in the Ordill Area. She enjoyed her family, friends, music and gardening. She was also skilled at making dresses and clothing for dolls. When her husband, George, retired the two of them enjoyed operating a Sno-Cone route in Herrin. She was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Herrin. Survivors include two sons and a daughter-in-law, Ray and Donna Bennett of Herrin and Darryl Bennett of San Jose, Calif.; a daughter and son-in-law, Jeannie and Ron Minter of Salem, Ore.; six grandchildren, Chris and Ellen Bennett of Jackson, Tenn., Jason and Mindie Bennett of Hendersonville, Tenn., Nathan Bennett of Herrin, Mike and Susie Minter of Keizer, Ore., and Shannon Bennett and Stephanie Trimble of San Jose; four great-grandchildren, Aidan and Ethan Bennett of Jackson and Michael and Rachel Minter of Keizer; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Dorothy Trapani and Dora and Joe Palmer, all of Herrin; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Bob and Mathilda Bayles of Creal Springs and James and Sue Bayles of Herrin; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews; many cousins; and special friends, Loren Ralls of Herrin, Ruth Smith of Johnston City, Myrtle McCarty and Don and Janet Smith, all of Herrin. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, daughter, Judith Trimble-Smallman, and one sister, Virginia Smothers. The funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 17, 2003, in Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Herrin, with Monsignor Ken Schaefer officiating. Burial will be in San Carlo Cemetery in Herrin. Visitation will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. today in Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home in Herrin. A prayer service will be at 6 p.m. today in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the OLMC/St. Mary's School Education Foundation or to San Carlo Cemetery and will be accepted at the funeral home or may be mailed to Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home, P. O. Box 429, Herrin, IL 62948.

Sandra Lynn Pearson
MOUNDS -- Sandra Lynn "Sandy" Kennedy Pearson, 53, of Joliet, formerly of Mounds, died at 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 14, 2003, in Joliet. Sandy was born July 14, 1950, in Joliet, the daughter of the late Richard Pearson and June Borg Pearson. She attended the Faith Bible Church in Joliet and was a former member of the Pulaski County Republicans Booster Club. Survivors include two sons and a daughter-in-law, Gene and Cindy Kennedy of Mounds, and Jerry Kennedy of Joliet; a daughter and son-in-law, Cynthia and Todd Spaulding of Villa Ridge; stepfather, Ernest Flanigan Sr. of Joliet; a brother, Ernie Flanigan Jr. of Joliet; two sisters, Cynthia Pickens of Savannah, Tenn., and Debra Dobson of Joliet; five grandchildren; nieces and nephews. Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 17, 2003, in Jones Funeral Home in Villa Ridge, the Rev. John Windings officiating. Interment will be in Rose Hill Cemetery in Pulaski. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. today in the funeral home. Jones Funeral Home in Villa Ridge is in charge of arrangements.

John 'Jay' Phillip Clough
MURPHYSBORO -- John "Jay" Phillip Clough, 73, passed away at 1:23 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 15, 2003, in his residence. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Oct. 17, 2003, in St. Peter's United Church of Christ, with the Rev. Larry Cook officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Joy Cemetery. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Pettett Funeral Home and from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the church. Memorials may be made to the church. Jay was born on April 4, 1930, in Murphysboro to Theron and Hazel (Schmellmeyer) Clough. He had worked at the former Brown Shoe Company and then went to work and retired from the Penn Aluminum Plant, both in Murphysboro. Mr. Clough was a member of the St. Peter's United Church of Christ in Murphysboro. Jay loved to fish and hunt, and he was an avid gardener and supplied his family with fresh vegetables. He married Clara Belle Massey on Jan. 26, 1951, in Murphysboro, and she preceded him in death on July 5, 2003. He is survived by two sons John Allen Clough and James "Jim" Edward Clough and one son-in-law, Gary Rains, all of Murphysboro; one brother and sister-in-law, William "Bill" and Rose Clough of Murphysboro; four sisters and one brother-in-law, Doris McCann of St. Louis, Charlotte Winget of De Soto, Camilla Rose and Ruth and Jerry Sarensen, all of Murphysboro; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one daughter Louise Rains on Aug. 10, 1997, one sister, Sophia Duncan, and his parents.

Otis Spears Sr.
ULLIN -- Otis E. Spears Sr., 74, died at 6 a.m. Monday, Oct. 13, 2003, at home. Services will be at noon Saturday in Cypress Grove Missionary Baptist Church, with Pastor Enloe A. Clemons Sr. officiating. At the request of Mr. Spears, his remains will be cremated following the services. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday at the church. Massie Funeral Home in Cairo is in charge of arrangements.

Brandon Keith Palmer
DONGOLA -- Brandon Keith Palmer, 16, died Aug. 21, 2003, in the University of Alabama Medical Center in Birmingham. Services were Aug. 24, 2003, in First Baptist Church of Cleveland, with the Rev. Randy Hale officiating. Burial was in Nectar Cemetery. Visitation was from 5 to 9 p.m. Aug. 23. Blount County Funeral Home in Cleveland, Ala., was in charge of arrangements. Brandon was born in Carbondale to Barry Palmer Jr. and Tamatha Thompson Palmer. He was a student at Cleveland High School. He was a member of United Missionary Baptist Church. He was a popular and well loved 11th grader at Cleveland High School. His activities while at Cleveland included football, tutoring, serving as office aid and membership in Future Farmers of America. He received various academic awards in the 2002-2003 school year at Cleveland High School. He was an avid hunter and enjoyed hunting with his dad. Survivors include his father and stepmother, Barry Jr. and Carla Palmer; mother and fianc, Tammy Palmer and Glenn Sherbet; two brothers, Cody Palmer of Cleveland, Ala., and Caleb Palmer of Dongola; a sister, Macayla Palmer of Dongola; Glenn's children, Amanda and Kana Sherbet of Dongola; and grandparents, Barry Sr. and Judy Palmer, Linda and Guss Kuesis and Kay Thompson, all of Dongola. He was preceded in death by two grandparents, Judy Thompson and Ralph Thompson.

Rollie E. Kraft
THOMPSONVILLE -- Rollie E. Kraft, 83, died at 6:50 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 14, 2003, in Herrin Hospital. Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday in the Masonic and Oddfellows Cemetery in Benton, with the Rev. John F. Seibert officiating. There will be no visitation. Morton and Johnston Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Becky Dixon
MOUNT VERNON -- Becky Sue Dixon, 48, of Mount Vernon, formerly of Peoria, died at 2 a.m. Monday, Oct. 13, 2003, in her brother's home in Peoria. Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday in Newell Funeral Home, with the Rev. Clifford Hicks officiating. Burial will be in Knob Cemetery in Waltonville. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday in the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society and will be accepted by the funeral home.

Floyd Catlett
HERRIN -- Floyd Catlett, 60, died Tuesday, Oct. 14, 2003, in Collierville, Tenn. Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in Hurst Christian Church, with the Rev. Greg Parker officiating. Burial will be in St. Peter and Paul Cemetery in Parma, Ohio. Visitation will be from 9 to 10 a.m. Saturday in the church. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society. Walker Funeral Home in Hurst is in charge of arrangements. Floyd was born April 8, 1943, in Herrin, to Robert and Kathleen James Catlett. He married Mary Hrynyszyn and she survives of Collierville. He was a retired director of human resources and labor relations for Kroger. Survivors include a daughter, Stacey Paine of Florence, Ala.; a son, Scott Catlett of Memphis, Tenn.; his mother of Glen Carbon; two grandchildren; and two brothers, John of Cahokia and Mark of Chicago. He was preceded in death by his father and grandmother, Dorothy James preceded him in death.
