Elizabeth M. Roberts
BENTON -- Elizabeth M. Roberts, 66, of 701 N. Buchanan St., died at 10:06 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 14, 2003, in Good Samaritan Regional Health Center in Mount Vernon. Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 17, 2003, in Hobbs-Johnson Funeral Home in Benton, with the Rev. Dale Carson officiating. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today in the funeral home. Her body will be cremated. Mrs. Roberts was born March 13, 1937, in Sesser, the daughter of Andrew Meyers Sr. and Jewel Inabnit Meyers. She married John H. Roberts on Nov. 19, 1955, and he survives. She was a retired office manager for Hugh Frailey State Farm Insurance in Benton. She was a member of the Benton Elks Ladies Auxiliary and was of the Lutheran faith. In addition to her husband, she is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Pamela J. and Bill Vandermeir of St. Petersburg, Fla.; a son and daughter-in-law, Jeffery A. and Beth Roberts of Whittington; three grandchildren, Benjamin and Courtney Vandermeir, both of St. Petersburg, and Ethan Roberts of Whittington; a brother, Billy Joe Meyers of Elgin; a sister and brother-in-law, Lucille and Terry Allen of Elgin; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Andrew Meyers Jr. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or the Elks Crippled Children Foundation and will be accepted at the funeral home. Minnie V. Smith
METROPOLIS -- Minnie V. Smith, 76, of Metropolis, formerly of Johnson County, passed away at 2:15 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 15, 2003, in her home near Metropolis. Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in Bailey Funeral Home in Vienna, with Everett Owens officiating. Interment will be in Masonic Cemetery in Cypress. Friends may call after 5 p.m. Friday in the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Heather Harper-Treat Memorial Cancer Fund, P. O. Minnie was born July 9, 1927, in Karnak, the daughter of Marion and Cora Dunn Stevens. She was united in marriage to Raymond Smith in October 1971, in Chicago, and he preceded her in death in June 1977. She had worked in the file department of the Bankers Life and Casualty Insurance Company. She retired after more than 20 years of service with Skill Corp. in Chicago, where she had been employed as a supervisor. She was of the Baptist faith and was a member of the Independent Order of Foresters. Survivors include seven sisters, Mary E. Williams of Cypress, Erma Story of Metropolis, Barbara Foster of Goreville, Alberta "Bertie" Stevens of Park Ridge, Velma Dickerson of Edwardsville, Linda Price and Patricia Warner, both of Sherwood, Ark.; four brothers, Aaron Stevens of Rock Falls, Marion Lewis Stevens of Olive Branch, Wesley Rhymer of Dongola and Charlie Johnson of Chicago; and nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by an infant son, J. Junior Rhymer, five sisters, two brothers, William Emanuel Stevens and Billy Stevens, and her stepmother, Alberta Johnson Stevens.

Kenneth D. Sadler
JONESBORO -- Kenneth D. Sadler, 70, died Tuesday, Oct. 14, 2003, in Lourdes Hospital in Paducah. He was born Aug. 10, 1933, in Union County, the son of James Ervin and Iva Edmonds Sadler. He married Mary Burton May 12, 1961 in Anna, and she survives. Kenneth worked for many years at the Jonesboro Sawmill, was pastor of Church of Jesus Christ for many years, and later worked for the U. S. Forest Service. He served in the U. S. Air Force. He was a member of the Landmark Pentecostal Church. Survivors include his wife, Mary; three sons and one daughter-in-law, Kenneth D. Sadler Jr., Robert B. Sadler and Matthew and Vicki Sadler, all of Jonesboro; two daughters and sons-in-law, Mariann E. and James Jackson of Jonesboro and Sharity I. and Tony Gaddis of Alto Pass; nine grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Phylis Goins of Cobden and Judy Fowler of Jonesboro; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, six brothers and sisters. Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday in the chapel of Hileman Funeral Home, with the Rev. Richard Pearce officiating. Interment will be in Casper Cemetery, with military rites by Carroll P. Foster VFW Post 3455 of Anna. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

James Taylor
WEST FRANKFORT -- James H. Taylor, 54, died Wednesday, Oct. 15, 2003, at home. Arrangements are incomplete at Parker-Reedy Funeral Home in West Frankfort.

Marie Sweitzer
COBDEN -- Marie Sweitzer, 82, died Tuesday, Oct. 14, 2003, in her daughter's home in Lick Creek. She was born Oct. 9, 1921, in Cairo, the daughter of William and Blanche (Dillard) White. She married Karl M. Sweitzer Sr. Nov. 15, 1947, in Cobden. He preceded her in death Oct. 12,2001. Mrs. Sweitzer was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Cobden. She is survived by five children and their spouses, Karl Jr. and Anita Sweitzer of Cobden, Karen Sweitzer of Washington, Ill., Karol and Gary Gill of San Antonio, Texas, Kurt and Lisa Sweitzer of Cobden and Karee Sweitzer of Lick Creek; seven grandchildren, Karl Sweitzer III, Kristofer Sweitzer, Kaitlin Sweitzer, Alex Sweitzer, Nathan Sweitzer, Mary Sweitzer and Austin Gill; one brother, Leonard White of Fort Worth, Texas; and two sisters, Elsie Hight of Columbus, Ga., and Rosalyn Croy of Belleville. She was preceded in death by her parents, and seven brothers and sisters. Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday in St. Joseph's Catholic Church, with Father Federico Higuera officiating. Interment will be in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Lutz and Rendleman Funeral Home in Cobden, with a rosary service at 8 p. m.

COLP -- Judy Keyes, 54, died at 5:45 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 15, 2003, in Gateway Regional Medical Center in Granite City. Arrangements are incomplete at Mitchell-Hughes Funeral Home in Marion.

Patricia Moore
HERRIN -- Patricia A. Moore, 72, died at 8:10 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 15, 2003, in Guardian Angel Home in Johnston City. Arrangements are incomplete at Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home in Herrin.

Vada Pelot
TAMAROA -- Vada M. Pelot, 83, died at 3:45 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 14, 2003, in Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, Mo. Services will be at noon Friday in Searby Funeral Home in Tamaroa, with Brother Darrell McCombs officiating. Burial will be in Tamaroa Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to noon Friday in the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Friendship Church of Christ and will be accepted by the funeral home.

Clifton Whitlock
RALEIGH -- Clifton W. Whitlock, 79, died Tuesday, Oct. 14, 2003, at home. Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday in Watson Funeral Home in Eldorado, with the Rev. Scott Johnson and Dr. James Baldwin officiating. Burial will be in Raleigh Masonic Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Johnetta L. Jones
CARBONDALE -- Johnetta L. Jones, 56, died Saturday, Oct. 11, 2003, in St. John's Hospital in Springfield. A memorial service will be at 4 p.m. today in the Grand Ballroom, Martin Luther King Jr. University Union, Eastern Illinois University, Charleston. Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday in New Zion Missionary Baptist Church in Carbondale, with Dr. Norman S. Greer officiating. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday in the church. Jackson Funeral Home in Carbondale is in charge of arrangements.

Harry Scroggins
WALTONVILLE -- Harry Scroggins, 75, died at 2. 05 a.m. on Oct. 14, 2003, at home. He was born April 1, 1928, in New Douglas to Otto and Anna (Senaldi) Scroggins. He married Jean Ann Isom on Jan. 18, 1952, in Waltonville. Harry grew up in Livingston and moved to Waltonville when he was a Junior in High School. He served in the U. S. Navy from 1946 until 1948. Harry worked for Retail Credit Company, Standard Accident Insurance Company, and Reliance Insurance Company, all of Mount Vernon. For the past 20 years, along with his son, Brad Scroggins, he owned and operated Scroggins Adjusting Service of Mount Vernon. He was a Protestant and was a member of the Sesser Masonic Lodge 918, Ainad Shrine Temple, Jefferson County Shrine Club, Waltonville VFW Post 9153, Waltonville Amvets Post 148, American Legion Post 141 of Mt. Vernon and Mt. Vernon Elks Lodge 819. Survivors include his wife, Jean, one daughter and son-in-law, Kim and Tom Maldonado of Tipp City, Ohio; one son, Brad Scroggins of Frisco; four grandchildren, Ryan, Lindsay and Kristen Maldonado, and Ashley Scroggins; one brother and sister-in-law, Raymond and Ella Scroggins of Staunton; three sisters-in-law and their husbands, Evelyn and Bill Tolley of Mount Vernon, Faye and Merle Rightnowar of Waltonville, and Frances Scroggins of Granite City; one brother-in-law, Ralph Isom of Mount Vernon; several nieces and nephews; his secretary, Margie DeMent and a special friend, Norman "Wimp" Wester. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers and one sister-in-law, Louie and Nancy Scroggins and Bill Scroggins; and his father and mother-in-law, Nelson and Inez Isom. Services will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 16, 2003, in Newell Funeral Home in Waltonville, the Rev. Mark Minor officiating. Burial will follow at Knob Prairie Cemetery, with military honors by VFW Post 9153 and Amvets Post 148. Friends may call from 5 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home. For those wishing, memorials may be made to Knob Prairie Cemetery or St. Mary's Good Samaritan Hospice and will be accepted at Newell Funeral Home.

Harold Bynum
CARRIER MILLS -- Harold "Tice" Bynum, 74, died Monday, Oct. 13, 2003, in Western Baptist Hospital. Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in Joyner Cemetery in Stonefort. Those attending are asked to meet at the cemetery. No visitation. Memorials may be made to Joyner Cemetery and envelopes will be available at the funeral home or at the service.

Frieda L. Beckmeyer
CENTRALIA -- Frieda L. Beckmeyer, 98, of Lewisburg, Penn., formerly of Centralia, died Monday, Oct. 13, 2003, in Lewisburg. Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Boggs Chapel of Styninger-Pacey Funeral Home, with the Rev. William Causer officiating. Burial will be in Zion United Church of Christ Cemetery in Hoyleton. Visitation will be fom 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday in the funeral home. Memorials may be made to St. Peter UCC or the Hoyleton Children's Home and will be accepted by the funeral home.
