TAMAROA -- Geneva Bleicker, 94, died at 4:38 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 6, 2002, at the Marshall Browning Hospital. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin, with the Rev. Bob Dickerson officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Park in Du Quoin. Visitation will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Jewell L. Hurst
SHAWNEETOWN -- Jewell L. Hurst, 72, died at 6:05 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 6, 2002, in Ferrell Hospital in Eldorado. Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Vickery Funeral Chapel in Shawneetown, with the Rev. Bob Powell officiating. Burial will be in Westwood Cemetery. Visitation was Monday at the funeral home.

Kathryn Ewell
HARRISBURG -- Kathyrn Ewell, 77, died at 8:04 p. m., Saturday, Jan. 5, 2002, in Harrisburg Medical Center. Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday in Reed Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Art Foster officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today in the chapel.

Margaret Hemphill
WEST FRANKFORT -- Margaret Hemphill, 86, died at 1:40 p.m. Monday, Jan. 7, 2002, at Memorial Hospital of Carbondale. Arrangements are incomplete at Union Funeral Home.

AVA -- Ruby Baker, 79, died at 10:15 a.m. Monday, Jan. 7, 2002, in St. Joseph Memorial Hospital in Murphysboro. Arrangements are pending at Wilson Funeral Home in Ava.

Burl Eugene Sussen
GOREVILLE -- Burl Eugene Sussen, age 75, of rural Goreville, the Lake of Egypt area, passed away at 8:24 a.m. on Sunday, Jan. 6, 2002, at Veterans Administration Medical Center of Marion. He was born in Keyesport, Ill., on Dec. 2, 1926, the son of John George and Rose Katherine (Huddleston) Sussen. Mr. Sussen was united in marriage to Mildred Lucille Oliver on April 12, 1955, at Edwardsville, Ill. Together they have enjoyed 46 years of marriage. He answered the call of this country by serving in the United States Army during W. W. II. After his discharge he then enlisted in the United States Air Force, serving for total of nearly 21 years until his retirement on Jan. 31, 1970, with the rank of Technical Sergeant. After his retirement from the Air Force he continued his working career as a Freight Truck Driver until his retirement in 1984. He was of the Protestant faith and was a member of the Masonic Lodge No. 16 of Vandalia since 1963. He is survived by his wife, Mildred L. of Goreville; son and daughter-in-law, John and Kyle Sussen of St. Joseph; daughter, Jo Ellen Sussen of Urbana; son, William G. Sussen of Urbana; and daughter, Tammi Sussen of Goreville; grandchildren, Chad Sussen of Carbondale, Jamie and Chris Sussen of Little Rock, Ark. and David and Kristina, both of Goreville; great-granddaughter, Ivy Ray Davis of Defiance, Ohio; and a host of nieces, nephews, other family members and many friends. Preceding him in death were parents, four brothers and three sisters. The funeral service for Burl Eugene Sussen will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2002, in Wilson-McReynolds Funeral Home, located at 900 N. Court St., Marion, with Dr. Harold Landwehr officiating. Veterans of Foreign Wars Heyde-Pillow Post No. 1301 of Marion, will conduct military rites at the funeral home. The time of visitation for family and friends will be held at 9 a.m. until the time of the service Wednesday at the funeral home.

Louise French Overfelt
SESSER -- Louise French Overfelt, 85, died at 1:57 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 6, 2002, in Franklin Skill Care Center in Benton. She had lived in Lakeland, Fla., for 45 years until recently and had recently moved to Sesser to be with her daughter because of poor health. She was a retired employee at the Lakeland Manor in Florida. She was born March 29, 1916, in Pineville, Ky., to Robert and Susie (Caldwell) Burns. She and her husband, Robert French, who died in 1980, were charter members of the Lake Gibson Church of Nazarene, formerly known as the Lakeside Church of the Nazarene. She was a member of Central Church of the Nazarene in Lakeland, Fla. She taught Sunday school and loved working in the nursery at church, cooking and raising orchids and violets. Survivors include her children, Betty Lou Parsons and her husband, Wendy, of Sesser, formerly of Bourbonnais, Ill., and Jerry Botner and his wife, Mary, of Morristown, Tenn., formerly of Lakeland, Fla.; five grandchildren, Michael Parsons of Chicago, Monte Parsons of Bourbonnais, Wendy Jo and husband, Michael Melton of Lincolntown, N. C., Joel and wife, Karen, Botner of Lakeland, and Debra and husband, Bryan Rice of Lakeland; and seven great-grandchildren. Six brothers, six sisters and one great-grandchild preceded her in death. Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Brayfield-Gilbert Funeral Home, with the Rev. Charles Kirby officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery in Florida. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice.

Juanita Hall
ZEIGLER -- Juanita M. Hall, 84, of 115 Mongoose St. died at 7 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 6, 2002, in St. Ann's Nursing Center and Residence in Miami, Fla. Arrangements are incomplete at Vantrease Funeral Home in Zeigler.

Thelma (Dorris) Dees
WEST FRANKFORT -- Thelma Alzada Dees, age 93, died Sunday Jan. 6, 2002, at the Herrin Hospital. She was born June 11, 1908, to Orid and Clara (Allen) Dorris. She married Dwight Olen Dees on Sept. 15, 1928, and he preceded her in death in 1988. Survivors include a son, Olen Ray Dees and wife Glenda of West Frankfort; two daughters, Doris Evelyn (Dees) Maddux and husband Clifton of Fairfield Glades, Tenn. and Sharon (Dees) Burton of Riverside, Calif.; a brother, Roger Dorris and wife June of West Frankfort; eight grandchildren, Bret Dees, Scot Dees and wife Kris, all of West Frankfort, Mark Dees and wife Kelly of Tampa, Fla., Linda (Maddux) Waggoner and husband John of Bonaire, Ga.; Nancy (Maddux) Taylor and husband Jo Ed of Lookout Mountain, Ga., Greg Burton and wife Carla of Camarillo, Calif.; Teri (Burton) Freeman and husband Jason of Battle Ground, Wash. and Cory Burton of Riverside, Calif.; 11 great-grandchildren, Lacey and Michael Dees of West Frankfort; Logan and Dean Waggoner of Bonaire, Ga., Cristin, Caroline and Catherine Taylor of Lookout Mountain, Ga. Lindsey and Ty Burton of Camarillo Calif. and Erin and Katie Freeman of Battle Ground, Wash. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Dwight, infant son, Raymond Lee Dees, three brothers, Wayne Dorris, Fulford Dorris and infant brother, Ferrell Dorris, sister, Virginia (Dorris) Smith. Thelma was a member of the First Baptist Church in West Frankfort. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday Jan. 10, 2002, at the Parker - Reedy Funeral Home in West Frankfort, with the Rev. Bill Fox officiating. Burial will be in the Denning Cemetery in West Frankfort. Friends of the Dees family may call from 5 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home.

Calvin L. Kessel
SPARTA -- Calvin L. Kessel, age 67, of Effingham died at 3:42 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 5, 2002, at his home. Funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2002, in St. Mary's Catholic Church in St. Elmo. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday Jan. 8, 2002, at the Kessel Funeral Home in St. Elmo. Entombment will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorials me be made in Calvin's name to: Lincolnland Hospice, 405 South Banker St., Suite 204, Effingham, IL 62401, or St. Mary's Catholic Church Furnace Fund, St. Elmo, IL. Calvin was born on May 20, 1934, in Willisville, the son of George J. and Eunice G. (Sieberg) Kessel. He retired in June 1996 from World Color as the quality control supervisor for 38 years. Calvin transferred to Effingham World Color Division from Spartan Printing in Sparta in 1972. He is a corporated board member of the Kessel Corporation, owner and assistant to the funeral director at the Kessel Funeral Home. He was a member and past president of the St. Elmo Lion's Club and member of the American Legion Post 120 of Effingham. He served in the Korean Conflict in the U. S. Army. He married Mary E. "Libby" Leber on June 7, 1963, in Sparta, and she survives. He is also survived by three daughters and their husbands, Dawn and David Hoedebecke of Effingham, and Leslie and Brian Bullard and Valerie Kessle-Crowe and Bert Crowe, all of St. Elmo; four grandsons, Jonas and Noah Hoedebecke of Effingham and Dylan and Ethan Bullard of St. Elmo; one stepgrandson, John Crowe of Pana; one sister and her husband, Juanita and Kenneth Hille of Seattle, Wash.; and many, many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Patsy Glenn, and two granddaughters, Tifany and Hilary Hoedebecke.

Jean Feutz
OLNEY -- Jean Feutz, 74, died at 3:57 a. m Monday, Jan. 7, 2002, at Richland Memorial Hospital in Olney. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at Summers-Kistler Funeral Home in Olney, with Minister Larry Weber officiating. Burial will be in Haven Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Elmer Fred Hinnerichs
STEELEVILLE -- Elmer Fred Hinnerichs, 88, died at 9:41 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 6, 2002, in Sparta Community Hospital. He was born June 1, 1913, in Evansville, Ill., to Henry and Elizabeth Hinnerichs. He married Norma Junge on Oct. 17, 1942, in Fort Knox, Ky. He was a veteran of World War II and served in the U. S. Army. He was a member of St. John's United Church of Christ in Evansville, Ill. He also was a member of the B. B. K. American Legion Post 450 in Steeleville and Steeleville Eagles Aerie 3960 in Steeleville. He was a former member of the Steeleville Fire Department and a former member of the Steeleville Village Board. He was a retired carpenter. Survivors include is wife; two sons, Ray Hinnerichs of Steeleville and Roger Hinnerichs of Norcross, Ga.; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one brother, Harold Hinnerichs of Mesa, Ariz.,; and one sister, Opal Rehmer of Belleville. He was preceded in death by his parents and one granddaughter, Jennifer Hinnerichs. Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Wilson's Funeral Home, with the Rev. Paul Searby officiating. Burial will be in Paradise Cemetery in Steeleville. Friends may call after 5 p.m. today and from 7:30 a.m. until the hour of service on Wednesday at the funeral home.

Stella S. Moeckel
MURPHYSBORO -- Stella S. Moeckel, 96, died at 2:05 a.m. Monday, Jan. 7, 2002, at Chester Memorial Hospital. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 10, 2002, at Christ Lutheran Church in Jacob, with Pastor Mike Kettner officiating. Burial will be in Christ Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday from 5 to 8 p.m. at Crawshaw Funeral Home and from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday at the church. Memorials may be made to the Christ Lutheran Church or to the donors choice. Stella was born Sept. 26, 1905, in Jacob to Emanuel and Martha (Boehme) Bellmann. She was united in marriage to Herbert G. Moeckel on Feb. 18, 1928 in St. Louis. He preceded her in death on May 16, 1981. She was a member of the Christ Lutheran Church in Neupert and a former member of the Dorcas Society. She worked as a homemaker. She is survived by a daughter, Janice and husband Dr. J. C. Bright of St. Genevieve, Mo.; a son, Shirley and wife Hazel Moeckel of Murphysboro; a daughter-in-law, Loretta Moeckel of Perryville, Mo.; and two sisters-in-law, Ruby Bellman of Durango, Colo. and Hattie Schlimpert of Jacob. She is preceded in death by her parents, a son, Dr. Russell J. Moeckel, two brothers and two sisters.
