Henrietta Virginia (Handley) Jones

MURPHYSBORO -- Henrietta Virginia (Handley) Jones, 87, of Murphysboro, passed away at 11:25 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 23, 2004, in St. Joseph Memorial Hospital in Murphysboro. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 26, 2004, at Pettett Funeral Home with the Rev. Richard Lewis officiating. Burial will in Tower Grove Cemetery. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. today and Sunday until the hour of services at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the United Methodist Children's Home of Mount Vernon, and will be accepted at the funeral home. She was born on Aug. 31, 1917, in Murphysboro, the only child of Lawrence and Bernice (Ingram) Handley. She married Preston F. Jones on Aug. 8, 1935, in Pinckneyville. After 51 years of marriage, he preceded her in death in 1986. Henrietta survived the tornado of 1925 while attending Longfellow School and after that, she always remained nervous of storms. She graduated from Murphysboro Township High School in 1935. She and her husband owned and operated Jones Newsstand and Card Shop in downtown Murphysboro for more than 40 years. When she was younger, Henrietta served in several capacities at the Methodist church helping with communion and assisting the financial secretary. She had been a member of the Jackson Country Club where she and her husband Preston enjoyed playing golf with their weekend golf group. She loved to travel and was ready to go at a moment's notice. Henrietta loved to read mystery novels, and in her later years when she became afflicted with macular degeneration, she continued to listen to audio mysteries. Maintaining a genuine interest in people, she loved meeting and getting to know new people and visiting with her many friends. Even at the age of 87, she still enjoyed discussing politics and was looking forward to casting her vote in the next election. Her son, daughter, and granddaughters were a source of great pride to her and were the lights of her life. She was greatly loved and will be greatly missed. She is survived by one son, Preston Michael and wife Sharon of Murphysboro, one daughter Jamie Ingram of Boston; two granddaughters Robin of St. Louis, and Holly of Murphysboro. She was preceded in death by her husband and parents.

Geneva Thompson

ELLIS GROVE -- Geneva L. Thompson, 92, died at 3:03 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 23, 2004, in Sparta Community Hospital. Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday, Sept. 27, in St. Pius V Catholic Church in Walsh, with the Rev. John J. Joyce officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday and from 8 to 9:30 a.m. Monday at Welge-Pechacek Funeral Home in Evansville, Ill., with a prayer service at 5 p.m. Sunday. Memorials may take the form of masses.

Dayton Groennart

NASHVILLE -- Dayton Fred Henry Groennert, 82 died at 2:15 a.m. Friday, Sept. 24, 2004, at home. Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the Zion United Church of Christ in Addieville, with the Rev. Ken Richter officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery with military rites. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Sunday and 7:30 a.m. to noon on Monday at Styninger-Krupp Funeral Home in Nashville and one hour before service. Memorial contributions may be made to the Zion UCC Grounds Fund.

The Rev. Grady U. Sappington

MILLCREEK -- The Rev. Grady U. Sappington, age 78, of Millcreek, passed away Thursday, Sept. 23, 2004, in Union County Hospital. He was born on Jan. 30, 1926, in Floyd, Ark., the son of John Weston and Sarah Elizabeth (Keith) Sappington. He married Ruby Newton on Jan. 29, 1958, in St. Louis. He worked as a television and electronics repairman. He was a member of the Jesus Name Pentecostal Mission Church. Mr. Sappington served in the U. S. Army in World War II. Survivors include his wife, Ruby Sappington; daughter, Esther Mae Holderbach of Mesa, Ariz.; two sons, Grady U. Sappington Jr. of Anna, Jesse Dean Sappington of Little Rock, Ark.; stepdaughter, Naomi Z. D. Shannon of St. Louis; two stepsons, Marvin L. Lute Jr. Of Wai Paku, Hawaii, Daniel A. Lute of Rockford; 15 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; sister, Delavina Ferrin of Poplar Bluff, Mo.; brother, Quentine Carl Sappington of Little Rock. Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 28, 2004, in Hileman Funeral Home. Interment will be in the Anna Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Robert Bruns

STEELEVILLE -- Robert Dale Bruns, 38, died at 8:09 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 23, 2004, in Memorial Hospital in Chester. Services will be at 11 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 26, 2004, in Paradise Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Sunday at McDaniel Funeral Home, Sparta. Memorials may be made to Lutheran Children Family Services Adoption Program.

Freddie Little

CYPRESS -- Freddie Little, 75, died at 7:45 a.m. Friday, Sept. 24, 2004, in Paducah. Arrangements are incomplete at the Wilson Funeral Home in Karnak.

Pamela Kidd

CARRIER MILLS -- Pamela Murphy Kidd, 40, died at 12:15 p.m. Friday, Sept. 24, 2004, at home. Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday in Salem Cemetery. There will be no visitation. Memorials may be made to the SIDS Foundation or VNA.

Abraham Grounds

FERGES -- Abraham W. 'A.W.' 'Abe' Grounds, 82, of Ferges went home to be with the Lord at 4:50 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 9, 2004, in Herrin Hospital, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on July 8, 1922, in Herrin, to Clarence and Lillian (Bristow) Grounds, and was the sixth of 13 children. He moved to Ferges as a small child. He married Louise Scoby on Jan. 10, 1946, and she survives. Abe was a member of the Civilian Conservation Corps from 1938-1940 and served his country in the U. S. Navy from 1940-1946. Fifty-two months of that time was on active duty in the South Pacific during World War II. He attained the rank of gunner's mate, first class. Abe was employed by Freeman Coal Co., Freeburn, Orients 4, 5, and 6 for 31 years, retiring in 1976. He faithfully attended, loved and supported Ferges Free Methodist Church his entire life. He was a member of the American Legion in Herrin and the Disabled American Veterans. He loved gardening and asked the Lord to bless each seed he planted. However, the true joy he received came from giving away the fruits of his labor. Survivors include his devoted wife of 59 years, Louise Grounds of Ferges; one son and daughter-in-law, Gary and Sue Grounds of Charleston; two daughters and sons-in-law, Brenda and James K. Ritter of Ferges and Linda and Jim Cargal of Johnston City; four granddaughters, Jennifer and husband Rich Pribble of Herrin, Erin and husband Larry James Long of Johnston City, Joy Ritter of Ferges, and Holly Cargal of Johnston City; four grandsons, Dan Grounds of Romeoville, Jarrod and wife Cindy Ritter of Marion, Jeremy and wife Wendi Ritter of Goreville, and Adam and wife Misty Cargal of Johnston City; three great-granddaughters, Alyssa Erin and Madison Mae Pribble of Herrin and Haley Elizabeth Ritter of Marion; one great-grandson, Cameron James Long of Johnston City; her step-grandchildren, Christie Hardin of Lincoln and Teresa Milligan and Amy and husband Ryan Anis, all of Mattoon; her step-great-grandchildren, Cameron, Jordan and Nate Anis and Madison Milligan, all of Mattoon; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Bill and Juda Grounds of Marion and Larry and Marilyn Grounds of Herrin; four sisters and two brothers-in-law, Pauline Frick and Audrey Haynes, both of Marion, Dorthella and Luther Youngblood of Herrin, and Mary and Joe Cockburn of Johnston City; three sisters-in-law, Lillian Grounds of Marion, Evelyn Grounds of Herrin, and Mary Helen Grounds of West Frankfort; one brother-in-law, Albert Oliver of Pensacola, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Elroy, Richard and Ernest Grounds; and three sisters, Maude and husband Frank Oglesby, Arietta and husband Arlie Hubbard, and Betty Oliver; one brother-in-law, Clarence Frick; one grandson, Jeffrey Grounds; and three nieces. Abe was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He loved his Lord, his family, his church and his country. Our loss is Heaven's gain. Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 13, 2004, in the Ferges Free Methodist Church, with the Rev. Don Hawkins officiating. Burial will follow in Herrin City Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the Herrin American Legion and VFW posts. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today at Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home. Julia Kaminski

MULKEYTOWN -- Julia Kaminski, 75, died at 5:45 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 11, 2004, in Shawnee Christian Nursing Home in Herrin. Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 13, in St. Andrew's Catholic Church in Christopher, with Father Steven Poole officiating. Interment will be in St. Andrew's Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be from 8 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Gilbert Funeral Home in Christopher. Mrs. Kaminski was a retired clerk for Arondelli's and in a doctor's office. She was a member of St. Andrew's Catholic Church. She was born on March 6, 1929, in Royalton, to Jacob and Ann (Byer) Spyket. She married Anthony Kaminski in St. Louis, and he survives. Other survivors include one brother, Leo Spyket of St. Louis; and one sister, Helen Starasta of Royalton. She was preceded in death by four brothers, Herman, Adolph, John and Fred Spyket, and one sister, Mildred Alkaski.

Wilma Louise Kuerth

MOUNT VERNON -- Wilma Louis Kuerth, 84, of Centralia, formerly of Mount Vernon, died at 6:10 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 10, 2004, in Centralia Manor. Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 15, 2004, in Old Union Missionary Baptist Church in Mount Vernon, with the Rev. Brad Henson officiating. Burial will be in Mount Vernon Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be after 11 a.m. Monday at the church. Irvin Funeral Home in Centralia is in charge of arrangements. Mrs. Kuerth was a homemaker. She formerly worked at the Mount Vernon Garment Factory and Carps Department Store. She was a member of the Old Union Missionary Baptist Church and Jefferson County Homemakers. She was born on Dec. 29, 1919, in Franklin County, to Dan E. and Grace (Campbell) Dale. She married A. J. 'Bill' Kuerth on Sept. 1, 1952, in Clay County, Ark., and he preceded her in death on May 22, 1977. She lived her last five years in Centralia, but prior to that was a longtime Mount Vernon resident. Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Roger and Janice Kuerth of Mount Vernon; two daughters and one son-in-law, Barbara and Herbert Dare of Mount Vernon and Donna Setzekorn of Mount Pleasant, S. C.; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one brother, Byford Dale; and one sister, Jewel Garrison. Memorials may be made to Old Union Missionary Baptist Church.

Vanessa Ruth Collier-Dillow

COBDEN -- Vanessa Ruth Collier-Dillow, 45, of Bellevue, Neb., formerly of Cobden, died Wednesday, Nov. 10, 2004, in Bellevue. She was born on Aug. 24, 1959, in Tiptonville, Tenn., the daughter of Gary and Ruth Norris Collier. She married Shane Christopher Dillow on March 18, 1994, in Tacoma, Wash. She is survived by her husband, Shane Christopher Dillow of Bellevue; three sons, Joseph Brandon, Christopher Edward and Austin Colt; her parents of Cypress; one sister, Kim Dillow of Lick Creek; one brother, Gary Wayne Collier Jr. of Anna; her maternal grandmother, Thelma Norris of Cypress; her father- and mother-in-law, Darrell and Sandy Dillow of Cobden; and her nieces, nephew, and other relatives and friends. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Nov. 15, 2004, in Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church, located east of Cobden, with the Revs. Doug Bridgeman and Joey Hight officiating. Interment will be in Treece Cemetery near Cobden. Friends may call after 6 p.m. Sunday at Lutz and Rendleman Funeral Home in Anna and from 12 to 2 p.m. Monday at Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Flossie Mae James

CARTERVILLE -- Flossie Mae James, 87, of Florissant, Mo., formerly of Carterville, died Wednesday, Nov. 10, 2004, in Delmar Gardens North in Florissant. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 13, 2004, in Hillcrest Cemetery in Carterville, with the Rev. Stephen Palmer officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to the Carterville First United Methodist Church. Mae was born on Oct. 9, 1917, in Carbondale, to Lawrence A. and Flossie Mae (Frost) Cannon. She married Lester James on April 11, 1940, in Jackson, Mo. He preceded her in death on Feb. 2, 1958. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Joanne and Mark Floretta of Florissant; four grandchildren, Jennifer, Micah, John and Matthew Floretta, all of Florissant; two sisters, Isabell Wiggs of Florissant and Helen Colp of Crainville; and one brother, Leon Cannon of Arkansas. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband. Mae retired in 1988 from the Nutrition Headquarters in Carbondale, where she worked in the bottling department. She was also a homemaker who took great pride in the appearance of her home and yard. She was a member of the Carterville First United Methodist Church.

Willie Otto 'Bill' Kessel

CHESTER -- Willie Otto 'Bill' Kessel, 93, died at 7:55 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 10, 2004, in Memorial Hospital in Chester. Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 13, in Wilson's Funeral Home in Ava, with the Rev. Mike Fogerson officiating. Burial will be in Ava Evergreen Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today and from 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Mr. Kessel was a retired guard from Menard Correctional Center in Chester. He was a member of the United Presbyterian Church in Ava. He was born on March 30, 1911, in Ava, to Charles H. and Ada Ripply Kessel. He married Electa Worthen on April 6, 1935, in Ava. She preceded him in death on June 6, 1997. Survivors include three sons and daughters-in-law, the Rev. Kenneth and the Rev. Karol Kessel of Aromas, Calif., Dean and Ruth Kessel of Dongola; and Dwayne and Linda Kessel of Chester; six grandchildren; and 10 great- grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, one grandson, three brothers and three sisters.

Paul Sachtleben

HOYLETON -- Paul Sachtelben, 96, died at 4:31 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 10, 2004, in Good Samaritan Hospital in Mount Vernon. Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Hoyleton, with the Rev. Mark Nebel officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Styninger Funeral Chapel in Hoyleton. Memorials may be made to the Trinity Lutheran Church and will be received by the funeral home.
