Leo Everett Mattingly
HERRIN -- Leo Everett Mattingly, 83, died Wednesday, Nov. 24, 2004, at home with his family by his side. Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 27, in Van Natta Funeral Home, with the Revs. Don Colson and Brad Harlow officiating and military rites performed by the American Legion and VFW of Herrin. Burial will be in the Herrin City Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home. Leo was born on June 8, 1921, to Lena (Zimmerman) Mattingly Anderson and Douglas James Mattingly. He married Betty J. (Robinson) Mattingly on March 23, 1947, and she preceded him in death in May 1993. He then married Peggy (Wickam) Bowlin Mattingly on June 26, 1998, and she survives. He worked for Illinois Central Gulf Railroad and retired after 25 years of service. Leo and Betty Mattingly began in the nursing home business in 1966. The business grew to three facilities and continued until 1997, when the facilities were sold and Leo retired. He was a veteran of World War II. Survivors include his wife, Peggy Mattingly; four children and their spouses, Leo E. Mattingly Jr., William Jay and Chris Mattingly, David A. and Tina Mattingly, and Susan K. Mattingly South and Jimmy South; his grandchildren, Shannon Kay (Mattingly) Whitlock, Shelley Lynn (Mattingly) Mays, Joseph Michael Mattingly, Jonathon Lee Mattingly, Daniel Patrick Mattingly, Tori Marie Mattingly, Lance Allen Mattingly, Jeremiah South and David South; and five great-grandchildren, Dakota and Kaylee Whitlock, Ariel and Jessica Mays, and Shalynn South; and two sisters-in-law, Peggy and JoAnn Mattingly. He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife; two brothers, James and Douglas Mattingly; and one daughter, Frances Lee Mattingly. Memorials may be made to the VNA Hospice or the Betty J. Mattingly Scholarship Committee at John A. Logan College, 700 Logan Road, Carterville, IL 62918.
Robert 'Bob' Owen Sheridan
CARBONDALE -- Robert 'Bob' Owen Sheridan, 68, died at 1:20 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 25, 2004, in Memorial Hospital of Carbondale. Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday in Oakwood Cemetery, with the Rev. Melvin Larson officiating. Per Mr. Sheridan's request, no public visitation will be held. Those attending the services are asked to go directly to the cemetery. Professor Lewis E. Hahn
CARBONDALE -- Professor Lewis E. Hahn, 96, passed away at 5:45 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 23, 2004, at the Treemont Nursing Home in Dallas. Lewis was born Sept. 26, 1908, in Swenson, Texas, to Ed and Ione Hahn. He married Elizabeth (Herring) Hahn June 30, 1932. Dr. Hahn received his Bachelor of Arts in English and a Master of Arts in philosophy in 1929, both from the University of Texas in Austin. He received his doctorate in philosophy from the University of California at Berkeley in 1939. He served on the faculty of the University of Missouri from 1936 to 1949, was professor and chairman of philosophy at Washington University, St. Louis, from 1941 to 1963, where he also served as acting dean of faculties (1954) and dean of the graduate school from 1954 to 1963. He was also visiting lecturer at Princeton University in 1947. Elected to Phi Beta Kappa in 1929, Dr. Hahn received numerous honors during his long and distinguished career, both in this country and abroad, including Directory of American Philosophers Man of the Year in 1966 and 1967; was listed in Outstanding Educators of America in 1973; was an invited lecturer in various Chinese universities; became an honorary life member of the Southern Society for Philosophy and Psychology in 1980; and received the first Award for Exceptional Service from the Western Division of the American Philosophical Association. He served on the philosophy faculty of Southern Illinois University for 14 years, as a research professor and director of graduate studies from 1963 to 1974 and as a research professor from 1975 to 1977. Although he retired in 1977, he served as a visiting professor at the university and had been editor of the Library of Living Philosophers since 1981. He was chairperson of the SIUC Emeritus College's Public Affairs Forum from 1986 to 1990, participated in the writing or editing of more than 20 books, and had dozens of articles published in professional journals. Dr. Hahn was preceded in death by his parents; his brother; and his wife, Elizabeth. His survivors include three daughters and one son-in-law, Helen Elizabeth and Frank Cameron of Albuquerque, N. M., and Mary Louise Francis and Sharon Kay Crowell, also of Carbondale; his grandchildren; and his great-grandchildren. Services will be at McCoy Funeral Home in Aspermont, Texas. Burial will be in Brazos Valley in Texas. Memorials may be made to the Unitarian Fellowship in Carbondale or the charity of the donor's choice.

Maggie Brown
ANNA -- Maggie Brown, 87, of Anna, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 23, 2004, at home. She was born Dec. 14, 1916, in Jonesboro, daughter of William and Nora (Miller) Smiddy. She married Orvil 'Preacher' Brown on Jan. 2, 1932, in Jonesboro. He preceded her in death on Dec. 17, 1995. She was a homemaker and was a member of the Jonesboro Pentecostal Church. She is survived by three daughters, Remona Wright of Anna, Shirley Downey of Dongola and Carylon Coryell of Granite City; four sons, Gerald Brown of Anna, Lonnie Brown of Dongola, Bert Brown of Medina, Tenn., and Rockie Brown of Milan, Tenn.; 21 grandchildren; 45 great-grandchildren; 23 great-great-grandchildren; and one sister, Lily Bell Mayberry of Maude, Texas. She was preceded in death by her parents; his husband; two sons, Robert and Orville Dean Brown; and one daughter, Pat Reynolds. Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 27, in the chapel of Hileman Funeral Home in Jonesboro, with the Rev. David Brimm officiating. Interment will be in the Jonesboro Cemetery. Lee Melvin
WEST FRANKFORT -- Lee Melvin, 89, of Friendship, Wis., formerly of West Frankfort, died Monday, Nov. 22, 2004, in Villa Pines Living Center in Friendship. Memorial services will be at 1 p.m. today in the Thompsonville Seventh-Day Adventist Church, with Brother Danny Shelton officiating. Parker-Reedy Funeral Home of West Frankfort and Roseberry's Funeral Home and Crematory of Friendship are assisting the family with arrangements. Lee was born on June 2, 1915, to Charles and Iva (Williams) Melvin in West Frankfort. Lee married Lena May Rice in 1942. He worked as a forklift operator at Johnson and Johnson in Chicago for 28 years. Lee was a hard worker and a good provider. He was a loyal and dedicated family man. Lee retired in 1978 and moved to Adams County in 2004 from West Frankfort. After retiring, he enjoyed reading Louis Lamour westerns, crossword puzzles, televised baseball, and socializing with family and friends. He enjoyed watching 'Perry Mason,' 'Matlock,' 'Gunsmoke' and other westerns on television. He repented and was saved in our Lord's name in 2003. Lee is preceded in death by his parents; his wife; one daughter, Margaret Jane Pierce; one son-in-law, Ronald D. Pierce Sr.; his brothers; one sister; and his nephews. Survivors include four children and their spouses, Ellis and Ruth E. Melvin of West Frankfort, Abby and R. William Christie of Decatur, Timothy and Ruth A. Melvin of Herrin, and Joel Melvin of Florida; one granddaughter, Jeana and husband James Evrard of Grand Marsh, Wis.; four grandsons, Sgt. Michael Coble of Bangor, Wash., Christopher Coble and Jeffrey Foster, both of Decatur, and James Melvin of West Frankfort; three great-grandsons, Joseph Downing of West Frankfort, Jason Downing of Herrin and Brayden Coble of Decatur; one great-great-grandson, Thomas Downing of West Frankfort; and several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
