Roger Allen
ENERGY -- Roger Allen, 74, of Energy, passed away at 8:25 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 23, 2004, at home with his family. Roger was born on July 1, 1930, in Geneva, to Abner and Helen (Kline) Allen. He married Shirley Nicks on Sept. 19, 1953, in St. Charles. She survives of Energy. Mr. Allen served in the United States
Army during the Korean conflict. He was retired from Simplex Manufacturing in Elmhurst as a roller man. Roger was a spiritual man who lived his life with integrity and humor. He was a prankster and always the life of the party. He most enjoyed his family and sitting in the sun listening to country music. He was mechanically inclined and a skilled craftsman. He enjoyed riding motorcycles and built his own Harley-Davidson. He was innovative. This was exemplified by the time he tried to build a self-rocking bassinette by wiring a motor to it. It rocked a little too much. He shared many humorous memories, like the time he and Shirley were riding the
motorcyle
together. They came to a stop and when it was time to go again, he took off so quickly that Shirley was left behind. He didn't realize until he had gotten down the road a little way. He enjoyed a little beer and lived life to the fullest. He will be dearly missed by his family and friends. Survivors include his wife, Shirley Allen of Herrin; his children and their spouses, Mindy Lisewski and Dan Pricop of Ruskin, Fla., Bruce and Debbie Allen of Aurora, Melody and Dave Guerrero of Aurora, Brian and Sharon Allen of Warrenville, Tammy and Scott Augustine of North Aurora, and Barbara and Steve Hamilton of Wheaton; 17 grandchildren, Gary Lisewski of Smyrna, Tenn., Lana Morath of Aurora, Jeremy Augustine of Chicago, Michael Allen of Herrin, Crystal Augustine of Wheaton, Lena Guerrero of Aurora, Steven Hamilton, Joel Hamilton and Jackie Hamilton, all of Wheaton, Matthew Lisewski of Herrin, Aaron Allen of Warrenville, Kristopher Lisewski of Ruskin, Fla., Dustin Allen of Warrenville, Jacob Augustine of North Aurora, Timothy Lisewski of Kannapolis, Kan., and Crystal Allen and Melody Allen, both of Warrenville; six great-grandchildren, Joshua, Keefer, Rhyan, Rory, Ashley and Tyler; his siblings, Howard Allen of St. Charles, Laverne Allen of Geneva, Virginia Nieman of Plano and Billy Allen of St. Charles; many great nieces and nephews and great-nieces and -nephews; and his special friends, George Nicks of Johnston City, Doris Chaney of Hurst, Jerry Nicks of Herrin and Mary Nicks of Hurst. He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Steven Allen; one brother, Deacon Allen; and three beloved dogs, 'Joshua,' 'Cody' and 'Joby'. Service will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 27, 2004, in Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home in Herrin. The Rev. Don Colson will officiate. Burial will follow in East Lawn Memorial Gardens. military rites will be performed by the Herrin VFW and American Legion Posts at the graveside. Visitation will be from 9 to 11 a.m. Monday at the funeral home. The family would like to extend a special thank you to their sister, Tammy, for her hard work and sincere dedication to her father.

June Hayes 'Granny' Smith
CARTERVILLE -- June Hayes 'Granny' Smith, 77, went home to be with the Lord at 6:10 p.m. Friday, Sept. 24, 2004, at home in Carterville, surrounded by her family and friends. Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 27, 2004, in Riggin-Pillatsch Funeral Home in Carterville, with the Rev. Dorothy Cook officiating. Burial will be in Dillingham Shed Cemetery

June was born on June 20, 1927, in Bush, to Thomas and Eunice (King) Worthen. She married Charles Hayes, who preceded her in death, and then married Joe Smith, who has also preceded her in death. She is survived by two daughters and one son-in-law, Betty Whittington of Carterville and Terri and John Griffith of West Frankfort; three sisters, Irene Robinson of Herrin, Lillian Jackson of West Frankfort and Frances Ann Thomas of Murphysboro; two brothers, Lindell Worthen of Admore, Okla., and Loren Worthen of Lake of Egypt; eight grandchildren and their spouses, Randa and Kendall Marvel, Megan and Weylin Wece, Shane and Angie Griffith, Shannon and David Denfip, Jeremy and Lauren Griffith, Tammy and Darrell Hagan, Tom and Misty Whittington, and Theresa and Eugene Sloan; 15 great-grandchildren, Shelby Marvel, Kolten Marvel, Keylin Wece, Hannah Wece, Hunter Griffith, Sheldon Griffith, David Denfip, Madison Denfip, Aaron Denfip, Jason Hagen, Andrew Cooksey, Amanda Cooksey, Kiera Sloan, Kinsey Sloan, and Trevor Whittington; and her special neighbors, Roy and Nadine Davis and Bill and Sarah Smith. She was preceded in death by her parents; two husbands; and one brother, Robert Worthen. June was retired from Mark Twain Boat Company. She enjoyed her friends and her work at Wal-Mart in Marion, where she worked in the fitting department until her illness. She was a member of the First Apostolic Church in Carterville. June enjoyed life to the fullest. Her greatest joy was her church and her family. She loved woodworking. Her hands constructed many beautiful pieces for her family and friends. She also loved to fish and always seem to know where to catch the 'big ones. 'A special thank you goes out to Dr. Lawrence Hatchett and Dr. Sara Hasek and their staffs, Hospice of Southern Illinois, and the Rev. Dorothy Cook and Francis. June was a very special lady and will be greatly missed by her family and friends. Heaven's choir is just a bit louder since she is there.

ANNA -- Kathleen M. Burns, 57, of Anna, died at 7:40 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 23, 2004, in Union County Hospital in Anna. She was born Oct. 2, 1946, in Conrad, Mont., the daughter of Joseph Jeremiah and Charlotte Marie Nelson Burns. She is survived by her many friends at New Way, Inc., in Anna. Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday, Sept. 27, 2004, in the Lutz and Rendleman Funeral Home in Anna, with Monsignor Dennis Schaefer, pastor of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Anna, officiating. Interment will take place in Everett, Wash. Friends may call after 9 a.m. Monday at Lutz and Rendleman Funeral Home.
Henrietta Virginia (Handley) Jones
MURPHYSBORO -- Henrietta Virginia (Handley) Jones, 87, of Murphysboro, passed away at 11:25 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 23, 2004, in St. Joseph Memorial Hospital in Murphysboro. Services will be at 2 p.m. today in Pettett Funeral Home, with the Rev. Richard Lewis officiating. Burial will in Tower Grove Cemetery. Friends called from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday and may call until the hour of services Sunday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the United Methodist Children's Home of Mount Vernon and will be accepted at the funeral home. She was born Aug. 31, 1917, in Murphysboro, the only child of Lawrence and Bernice (Ingram) Handley. She married Preston F. Jones on Aug. 8, 1935, in Pinckneyville. After 51 years of marriage, he preceded her in death in 1986. Henrietta survived the tornado of 1925 while attending Longfellow School and after that, she always remained nervous of storms. She graduated from Murphysboro Township High School in 1935. She and her husband owned and operated Jones Newsstand and Card Shop in downtown Murphysboro for more than 40 years. When she was younger, Henrietta served in several capacities at the Methodist church, helping with communion and assisting the financial secretary. She had been a member of the Jackson Country Club, where she and her husband Preston enjoyed playing golf with their weekend golf group. She loved to travel and was ready to go at a moment's notice. Henrietta loved to read mystery novels, and in her later years, when she became afflicted with macular degeneration, she continued to listen to audio mysteries. Maintaining a genuine interest in people, she loved meeting and getting to know new people and visiting with her many friends. Even at the age of 87, she still enjoyed discussing politics and was looking forward to casting her vote in the next election. Her son, daughter and granddaughters were a source of great pride to her and were the lights of her life. She was greatly loved and will be greatly missed. She is survived by one son, Preston Michael and wife Sharon of Murphysboro; one daughter, Jamie Ingram of Boston; and two granddaughters, Robin of St. Louis and Holly of Murphysboro. She was preceded in death by her husband and parents.
Baby M. Toliver
HERRIN -- Baby M. Toliver, infant son of Melissa Brock of Herrin and Marcus Toliver of Carbondale, died at 1:41 a. m., Friday, Sept. 24, 2004, in the Memorial Hospital of Carbondale. He was born at 12:01 a.m. Friday at the hospital. He is survived by his parents, Melissa Brock of Herrin and Marcus Toliver of Carbondale; his maternal grandmother, Marilyn and husband Aaron Richardson of Herrin; his maternal grandfather, Dan and wife Carla Brock of Herrin; and his paternal grandparents, Maurice and Marilyn Toliver of Carbondale. Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday, Sept. 27, 2004, in the Herrin City Cemetery, with the Rev. Terry Griffith officiating. Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home in Herrin is handling the arrangements.
Mildred Gregory
PINCKNEYVILLE -- Mildred I. Gregory, 82, of Pinckneyville, passed away at 7:23 p.m. Friday, Sept. 24, 2004, in the Pinckneyville Community Hospital Skilled Care Unit. She was born on June 30, 1922, the daughter of John and Emma (Tiemann) Tanner. She married Jim Gregory on Oct. 24, 1942, in Farmington, Mo., and to this union was born one daughter, Gwen (Mrs. Perry Combs), of Jackson, Miss., and two grandsons, Ian and Evan Combs. On Nov. 15, 2003, Evan married Nichole Grice. Mildred was raised on a farm west of Pinckneyville, attended the rural Bauersachs school, and graduated from Pinckneyville Community High School with the class of 1940. She was a housewife and mother, later working at the Pinckneyville Community High School cafeteria for thirteen years and then for three years at the Country Set Garment Factory in Du Quoin. Mildred was a member of the Galum Baptist Church from 1933 to 1944, and then became a member of the First Baptist Church in Pinckneyville. She worked for many years as a teacher in the beginner and junior departments in Sunday school, Bible school and the girl's auxiliary. Mildred also worked for several years as the secretary of the Women's Missionary Union. She loved her church; her family; and spending time with her husband, daughter and two grandsons. Survivors include her husband, Jim, of Pinckneyville; one daughter and son-in-law, Gwen and Perry Combs of Jackson, Miss.; two grandsons, Ian Combs and Evan and wife Nichole Combs; one brother and sister-in-law, Vernie Tanner and wife Mabel, and their two daughters, Sharon and Pat of Oakwood; one nephew, Alan and wife Alice Eicholz; two nieces, Konnie (Hill) Craft and Jane (Tanner) and husband Ken Kruse. She was preceded in death by her parents, four sisters, four brothers, two nieces and three nephews. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 27, 2004, in the First Baptist Church in Pinckneyville, with the Revs. Charles Boling and Jim Endsley officiating. Interment will be in the Mueller Hill Cemetery. Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. today and from 8 to 9:30 a.m. Monday at the Pyatt-Harrawood Funeral Home in Pinckneyville and then from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday at the church. Velda Mae Forman
GOLCONDA -- Velda Mae Forman, 87, died at 9:04 p.m. Friday, Sept. 24, 2004, in Hardin County Hospital. Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday, Sept. 27, in Aly Funeral Home in Golconda, with the Rev. E. J. Cole officiating. Burial will be in the IOOF Cemetery
in Golconda. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Mrs. Forman was a press operator for 19 years at General Motors Corp. in Pontiac, Mich. She was a member of the First Baptist Church and the Rebecca Lodge, both in Golconda. She was born Feb. 6, 1917, in Pope County, to Albert and Ida Elizabeth (Igel) Barber. She married Charles H. Forman on Dec. 9, 1934. He preceded her in death on Sept. 16, 1991. Survivors include one niece, Lucille and husband Roy Davis of Golconda, and one nephew, Kenny and wife Betty Owens of Paducah. She is preceded in death by her parents, Albert and Ida Elizabeth Barber; her husband, Charles H. Forman; and one sister, Zelma Owens. Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church in Golconda.
Carl Hubbs
ANNA -- Carl A. Hubbs, 86, of Anna, died at 9:55 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 25, 2004, in the Illinois Veteran's Home in Anna. He was born Nov. 17, 1917, in Anna, the son of William Walter and Annie Belle Johnson Hubbs. He was married on Aug. 2, 1941, to Mary Rendleman. She preceded him in death on Jan. 5, 2004. Carl was a member of First Baptist Church of Anna, Anna Lodge No. 520 A. F. and A. M., and Anna Easter Star Chapter No. 522. He was a retired electrician and had worked with Cunningham Electric for 30 years. He was a member of IBEW for more than 50 years. Carl served his country during World War II in the U. S. Air Force. He had served as an officer in the Air Force Association. Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law, Mary Ann and Steve Westbrooks of Anna; two grandsons and their spouses, Matt and Valerie Westbrooks and Jacob and Amanda Westbrooks, all of Anna; one great-grandson, Jayden Westbrooks of Anna; his sister, Cora Goddard of Schaumberg; several nieces and nephews; his special friends from AJCHS Class of 1937; and other relatives. Besides his wife and parents, he was also preceded in death by three brothers, John, Ralph, and Albert Hubbs; two sisters, Mae and Murriel; and one half-sister, Maude. Services for Carl A. Hubbs will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 27, in Crain Funeral Home in Anna, with the Rev. Tim Sadler officiating. Interment will be in Anna Cemetery, with military honors by the U. S. Air Force. Francis 'Jerry' Cox
HERRIN -- Francis G. 'Jerry' Cox, 74, of Herrin, left this world on Thursday, Sept. 23, 2004, in the Herrin Hospital. Mrs. Cox was a homemaker and a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Herrin. She was born on Feb. 6, 1930, in Buckeye, Ariz., to Thomas and Pearl Myrtle (Lacy) Bendel. Jerry was united in marriage with David B. Cox on Aug. 19, 1956. He survives of Herrin. Also surviving are her children and their spouses, Rene and Jim Warner of Herrin, Charlene and Ernie Gwaltney of Herrin, Cecil Cox of Atlanta, Chris Shoemake of Herrin, David and Rene Cox of Herrin, and Tommy Cox of Atlanta; 12 grandchildren, Jennifer and husband Matt Colboth, Jodi Warner, Amy and husband Todd Bricker, Becky and husband Keith Stefan, Jeff Gwaltney, Torrey Cox, Lauren Cox, Steve and wife Jeanette Ruggeri, Brittney Cox, Ryan Cox, Jennifer Cox, and Tyler Cox; five great-grandchildren, Emma Colboth, Addison Bricker, Savannah Ruggeri, Logan Ruggeri and Nicole Stefan; and her special friends and caregivers, Jean Vannoy and Connie Dawes. She was preceded in death by her parents, three sisters and two brothers. Bill Lawson
HERRIN -- Bill B. Lawson, 80, of Herrin, passed away at 12:55 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 22, 2004, in Herrin Hospital. Bill's choice of final disposition was to be cremated. His family will honor his wishes and will have a memorial service at 1 p.m. Monday, Sept. 27, 2004, in New Barham Cemetery
in Marion, with the Rev. Brad Harlow officiating. Family and friends who wish to attend Bill's memorial service are asked to go directly to the cemetery. Van Natta Funeral Home in Herrin is entrusted with Bill's memorial service arrangements. Bill was born in Herrin to John Thomas and Marie (Barham) Lawson on May 9, 1924. He was employed by the Bunny Bread Company and worked for 40 years until his retirement. Bill served our beloved country proudly during World War II. He was an avid golfer and a proud Herrin Tiger sports fan. Bill enjoyed the many friendships he developed over the years by drinking coffee with his pals at the Hardee's and McDonald's restaurants in Herrin. Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Penny and Charles Patrick of Herrin; one grandson, John and wife Tracy Patrick of Marion; one great-grandson, Tyler Patrick of Herrin; three special friends, Joyce Calvert, who was the mother of his daughter, L. D. Starrick and Craig Baumgaurd, all of Herrin; and several loving nieces and nephews. Bill is preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Tom Lawson and L. P. Lawson; and one sister, Ruth Lawson. Bill will be dearly missed.
Gladys Brown
WEST FRANKFORT -- Gladys Brown, 92, of West Frankfort, went to be with the Lord at 6:57 p.m. Friday, Sept. 24, 2004, in Parkway Manor in Marion. She was born on Oct. 11, 1911, in Central City, Ky., to Lanna Gamblin and Eura (Cobb) Gamblin. She was married to James S. Brown, and he preceded her in death on June 2, 1990. Survivors include three daughters and sons-in-law, Shirley and Jack Cobb of Johnston City, Brenda and Charles Ksycki of DuBois, and Gloria and Rick Plasters of West Frankfort; two sons and daughters-in-law, Ed and Janet Brown of West Frankfort and Jack and Phyllis Brown of Buckner; 12 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, James; two sons, Billy James and Donald Ray Brown; and one sister, Nellie Gamblin. She was a Baptist. Mom was loved by her family and will be greatly missed. Private funeral services will be Monday, Sept. 27, 2004, in the Parker-Reedy Funeral Home in West Frankfort, with the Rev. Brian Mixon officiating. Burial will be in Tower Heights Cemetery
in West Frankfort.
