Pauline Blaney

JONESBORO -- Pauline Blaney, 85, of Jonesboro, died at 10:15 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 22, 2004, at home. She was born on June 18, 1919, in Murray, Ky., the daughter of William Novis and Bessie Mae Hurt Wells. She married Edgar L. 'Monk' Blaney on March 7, 1935, in Metropolis. He preceded her in death on Feb. 26 , 1994. She attended the Tamms United Methodist Church. She had worked in retail sales as a clerk and was a homemaker and, above all, a devoted mother to her children. She is survived by her children, Doris Burnham of Lansing, Mich., Ralph and wife Diane Blaney of Tamms, Ronald and wife Peggy Blaney of Madison, Ind., Carol Hindman of Buncombe, Anita and husband Link Beatty of Anna, and Janet Blaney of Dongola; 14 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and other relatives and many friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two daughters, Judith Forehand and Mary Ellen Rather; two grandchildren, David Brent Blaney and Michael Hindman; one sister, Lucille Curtis; and two brothers, Hardin and James Wells. Services for Mrs. Pauline Blaney will be held at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 26, 2004, in Lutz and Rendleman Funeral Home in Anna, with the Revs. Rob Grief and Les Pruehsner officiating and special words by Diane Blaney. Interment will be in the Jonesboro Cemetery. Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. tonday at the funeral home.

Baby Toliver

HERRIN -- Baby M. Toliver, infant son of Melissa Brock and Marcus Toliver of Carbondale, died at 1:41 a.m. Friday, Sept. 24, 2004, at the Memorial Hospital of Carbondale. Graveside services will to at 2 p.m. Monday, Sept. 27, 2004, in the Herrin City Cemetery, with the Rev. Terry Griffith officiating. Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home in Herrin is in charge of the arrangements.

Dorothy L. Graff

MURPHYSBORO -- Dorothy L. Graff, age 80, of Murphysboro, passed away at 4:25 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 23, 2004, at the Rehab and Care Center of Jackson County. Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 27, 2004, at Pettett Funeral Home. Burial will be in Pleasant Hill Cemetery. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday and Monday until the hour of services at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the First Christian Church or to the Pleasant Hill Cemetery Fund. Dorothy was born on Jan. 12, 1924, in Ava, to Edward McBride and Margaret (Arnold) McBride. She was a homemaker. Mrs. Graff was a member of the First Christian Church of Murphysboro, and the Loyal Berean Sunday School Class. She married Wayne D. Graff on Nov. 4, 1945, and he survives. Other survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Mary and David Reiman and Alice and Don Svanda, all of Murphysboro; three grandchildren, Jason Svanda and his wife Jessica Svanda of Murphysboro, Monica Chandley and her husband Todd Chandley of Evansville, Ind., and Allison Svanda of Murphysboro; two great-granddaughters, Olivia Chandley of Evansville, Ind. and Faith Svanda of Murphysboro; one sister, Pearl Austin and her husband Gale Austin of Washington; two sisters-in-law, Edna Yates and her husband Charles Yates of Murphysboro and Blanche Roberts and her husband Fred Wayne Roberts of Marion; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by three brothers, two sisters and her parents.

Frank R. Olguin

MURPHYSBORO -- Frank R. Olguin, 89, of Murphysboro, passed away at 5:10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 24, 2004, at Fair Acres Nursing Home in Du Quoin. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 28, 2004, at Pettett Funeral Home, with Father Gary Gummersheimer officiating. Burial will be in Mitchell Cemetery in Sesser. Friends may call from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to St. Andrew Church. Frank was born on Aug. 22, 1915, in Austin, Texas, to Jesse and Genevieve (Rogers) Olguin. He was a long shoreman with the Long Shoreman's Union local No. 19. Mr. Olguin served in the US Army during World War II. He was a former member of the Moose and Elks lodges. Frank married Alice Weir on June 9, 1945, in Seattle, and she preceded him in death on April 13, 1998. He is survived by one son, Ralph Olguin of Girard; five grandchildren, Melody Olguin of Murphysboro, Frank Olguin of Pana, Robert Olguin of Farmersville, Anita Wilson and her husband Gary of Ramsey, and Sherri White and her husband Chad White of Taylorville; 10 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Virginia Galarza and Louise Guajardo, both of Austin, Texas. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Harry Schorfheide

NASHVILLE -- Harry J. Schorfheide, 73, died at 8:10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 24, 2004, at Pinckneyville Hospital. Arrangements are incomplete at Styninger-Krupp Funeral Home in Nashville.

Betty Sibley

SPARTA -- Betty Sibley, 74, died at 1:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 24, 2004, in St. Louis University Hospital. Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at McDaniel Funeral Home, with Pastor Nan Ellis officiating. Burial will be in Caledonia Cemetery in Sparta. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday and Monday from 7:30 to 11 a.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to St. Jude Hospital.

Henrietta Virginia (Handley) Jones

MURPHYSBORO -- Henrietta Virginia (Handley) Jones, 87, of Murphysboro, passed away at 11:25 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 23, 2004, in St. Joseph Memorial Hospital in Murphysboro. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 26, 2004, at Pettett Funeral Home with the Rev. Richard Lewis officiating. Burial will in Tower Grove Cemetery. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. today and Sunday until the hour of services at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the United Methodist Children's Home of Mount Vernon, and will be accepted at the funeral home. She was born on Aug. 31, 1917, in Murphysboro, the only child of Lawrence and Bernice (Ingram) Handley. She married Preston F. Jones on Aug. 8, 1935, in Pinckneyville. After 51 years of marriage, he preceded her in death in 1986. Henrietta survived the tornado of 1925 while attending Longfellow School and after that, she always remained nervous of storms. She graduated from Murphysboro Township High School in 1935. She and her husband owned and operated Jones Newsstand and Card Shop in downtown Murphysboro for more than 40 years. When she was younger, Henrietta served in several capacities at the Methodist church helping with communion and assisting the financial secretary. She had been a member of the Jackson Country Club where she and her husband Preston enjoyed playing golf with their weekend golf group. She loved to travel and was ready to go at a moment's notice. Henrietta loved to read mystery novels, and in her later years when she became afflicted with macular degeneration, she continued to listen to audio mysteries. Maintaining a genuine interest in people, she loved meeting and getting to know new people and visiting with her many friends. Even at the age of 87, she still enjoyed discussing politics and was looking forward to casting her vote in the next election. Her son, daughter, and granddaughters were a source of great pride to her and were the lights of her life. She was greatly loved and will be greatly missed. She is survived by one son, Preston Michael and wife Sharon of Murphysboro, one daughter Jamie Ingram of Boston; two granddaughters Robin of St. Louis, and Holly of Murphysboro. She was preceded in death by her husband and parents.

Roger Allen

ENERGY -- Roger Allen, 74, of Energy, died at 8:25 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 23, 2004, at home with his family. Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 27, in Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home in Herrin, with the Rev. Don Colson officiating. Burial will be in East Lawn Memorial Gardens, with graveside military rites performed by the Herrin VFW and American Legion posts. Visitation will be from 9 to 11 a.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Geneva Thompson

ELLIS GROVE -- Geneva L. Thompson, 92, died at 3:03 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 23, 2004, in Sparta Community Hospital. Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday, Sept. 27, in St. Pius V Catholic Church in Walsh, with the Rev. John J. Joyce officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday and from 8 to 9:30 a.m. Monday at Welge-Pechacek Funeral Home in Evansville, Ill., with a prayer service at 5 p.m. Sunday. Memorials may take the form of masses.

Dayton Groennart

NASHVILLE -- Dayton Fred Henry Groennert, 82 died at 2:15 a.m. Friday, Sept. 24, 2004, at home. Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the Zion United Church of Christ in Addieville, with the Rev. Ken Richter officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery with military rites. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Sunday and 7:30 a.m. to noon on Monday at Styninger-Krupp Funeral Home in Nashville and one hour before service. Memorial contributions may be made to the Zion UCC Grounds Fund.

The Rev. Grady U. Sappington

MILLCREEK -- The Rev. Grady U. Sappington, age 78, of Millcreek, passed away Thursday, Sept. 23, 2004, in Union County Hospital.
He was born on Jan. 30, 1926, in Floyd, Ark., the son of John Weston and Sarah Elizabeth (Keith) Sappington.
He married Ruby Newton on Jan. 29, 1958, in St. Louis.
He worked as a television and electronics repairman.
He was a member of the Jesus Name Pentecostal Mission Church.
Mr. Sappington served in the U. S. Army in World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Ruby Sappington; daughter, Esther Mae Holderbach of Mesa, Ariz.; two sons, Grady U. Sappington Jr. of Anna, Jesse Dean Sappington of Little Rock, Ark.; stepdaughter, Naomi Z. D. Shannon of St. Louis; two stepsons, Marvin L. Lute Jr. Of Wai Paku, Hawaii, Daniel A. Lute of Rockford; 15 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; sister, Delavina Ferrin of Poplar Bluff, Mo.; brother, Quentine Carl Sappington of Little Rock. Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 28, 2004, in Hileman Funeral Home. Interment will be in the Anna Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Robert Bruns

STEELEVILLE -- Robert Dale Bruns, 38, died at 8:09 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 23, 2004, in Memorial Hospital in Chester. Services will be at 11 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 26, 2004, in Paradise Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Sunday at McDaniel Funeral Home, Sparta. Memorials may be made to Lutheran Children Family Services Adoption Program.

Freddie Little

CYPRESS -- Freddie Little, 75, died at 7:45 a.m. Friday, Sept. 24, 2004, in Paducah. Arrangements are incomplete at the Wilson Funeral Home in Karnak.

Pamela Kidd

CARRIER MILLS -- Pamela Murphy Kidd, 40, died at 12:15 p.m. Friday, Sept. 24, 2004, at home. Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday in Salem Cemetery. There will be no visitation. Memorials may be made to the SIDS Foundation or VNA.
