Sgt. Benjamin K. 'Ben' Smith

CARTERVILLE -- Sgt. Benjamin K. 'Ben' Smith, 24, was killed in action on Wednesday, Sept. 22, 2004, in the Al Anbar province of Iraq. Arrangements are pending at Riggin-Pillatsch Funeral Home in Carterville.

June Lorraine Mannen

WALTONVILLE -- June Lorraine Mannen, 76, died Wednesday, Sept. 22, 2004, at home. Services will be at 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 25, in Newell Funeral Home in Waltonville, with Minister Gilbert Daniels, M. Div., officiating. Burial will be in Knob Prairie Cemetery in Waltonville. Visitation will be from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Knob Prairie Cemetery and will be accepted at the funeral home.

Garland Walton Sr.

DU QUOIN -- Garland E. Walton Sr., 72, died Tuesday, Sept. 21, 2004, in the Memorial Hospital of Carbondale. Services will be at 12 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 25, in the Pyatt-Harrawood and Epplin Funeral Home in Du Quoin, with the Rev. Leon Kelley officiating. Burial will be in the IOOF Cemetery in Du Quoin. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the funeral home.

Henrietta Jones

MURPHYSBORO -- Henrietta Virginia (Handley) Jones, 87, died at 11:25 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 23, 2004, at St. Joseph Memorial Hospital in Murphysboro. Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 26, 2004, at Pettett Funeral Home in Murphysboro, with the Rev. Richard Lewis officiating. Burial will be in Tower Grove Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday and Sunday until the hour of service at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the United Methodist Children's Home of Mount Vernon and will be accepted at the funeral home.

Geneva Thompson

ELLIS GROVE -- Genevea L. Thompson, 92, died at 3:03 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 23, 2004, at Sparta Community Hospital. Arrangements are incomplete at Welge-Pechacek Funeral Home in Chester.

Ada Lane

HARRISBURG -- Ada Myrtle Burklow Lane, 99, died at 2:05 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 22, 2004, in Saline Care Center in Harrisburg. Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 25, at Reed Funeral Chapel in Harrisburg, with the Revs. Steve Shea and Robert Patton officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Lawn Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Burt H. Rowe

ELDORADO -- Burt H. Rowe, 67, of Sikeston, Mo., Died Wednesday, Sept. 22, 2004, at home. He was born April 15, 1937, in St. Louis to the late Burt Hilliard and Phoebe Carrie (Schaper) Rowe Sr. He made his home in Sikeston, Mo. He was an active investor and civic leader in southern Missouri. Mr. Rowe was chairman and president of First Eldorado Bancshares of Eldorado and principal shareholder of the multiple bank holding company. He acquired First State Bank in Eldorado in 1978. He became chairman and president of that bank's holding company, which along with its subsidiaries, includes key holdings such as First State Bank of Eldorado, First National Bank, Danna and Evansville, Ind., American Farm Mortgage Company, Louisville, Ky. And Capital First Corporation, Eldorado. Previously, Mr. Rowe was president and chairman of Farmers Mutual Insurance Company, Sikeston, and was chairman of the board of Trio-County Bank, Morehouse, Mo. He owned and managed agriculture interests in southeast Missouri and Southern Illinois. He was also a lead investor in numerous start-up companies over the years. He is a national recipient of the Earl Nightingale Human Resources Award. He was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Sikeston, where he has been involved in community development. He also belonged to the Southeastern Illinois College Falcon Society. He attended the University of Missouri-Columbia and is a graduate of the National Association of Mutual Insurance Companies Graduate School of Insurance Company Management. He also was a former member of the Sikeston Kiwanis Club and was active in the Republican Party at the county and state level. Known for his love of good food, great wine and interesting conversation, Mr. Rowe touched numerous lives with his wit, positive attitude and sense of humor. A strong believer in goal setting and achievement, Mr. Rowe believed in helping those who helped themselves. An avid traveler, he spent a great deal of time in Florida and Colorado and enjoyed occasional international adventure. Mr. Rowe married Anna Burgess on March 25, 1959, in Fort Meyer, Va., and they were remarried Sept. 5, 2004, in Sikeston. Besides his wife, he is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Martin and Angela Rowe of Harrisburg; three daughters and one son-in-law, Rachelle L. Rowe, Marianna and Paul Deal and Caroline C. Rowe, all of St. Louis. Two brothers, George Parker Rowe of Green Valley, Ariz., and David Martin Rowe of Hillsboro, Mo.; seven grandchildren, Lauren Freinberg, Philip Freinberg and Seth Deal all of St. Louis, Garrett Rowe of Harrisburg, Grace Deal, Jesse Deal and Claire Rowe all of St. Louis. He is preceded in death by one brother, Richard Rowe. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 25, 2004, at First United Methodist Church in Sikeston, with the Rev. Michael Blewitt, Episcopal pastor of the Church of St. Michael and St. George in St. Louis officiating. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 24, 2004, at Nunnelee Funeral Chapel in Sikeston, Mo.

Violet Wilkerson

BENTON -- Violet Jane Wilkerson, 59, died at 1:20 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 21, 2004 at the Franklin Hospital. Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 25 at the New Life Church of God in Benton, with the Rev. Larry House and Pastor Rod Joplin officiating. Burial will be in Franklin Cemetery in Whittington. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Morton and Johnston Funeral Home in Benton and after 11:30 a.m. Saturday at the church.

Willie Carter

MARION -- Willie Carter, 78, of Marion, passed away at 6:50 p.m. Monday, Sept. 20, 2004, in Southeast Missouri Hospital in Cape Girardeau. Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 25, 2004, in the First Apostolic Church in Marion, with the Revs. R. G. Walls and James Johnson officiating. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 24, at the church. Blue Funeral Home in Marion is in charge of the arrangements. Burial will be at Rose Hill Cemetery in Marion. military rites will be held at the cemetery by VFW Post No. 1301 and American Legion Post No. 147. Mr. Carter was born Nov. 29, 1925, in Hamburg, Ark., to Wyatt T. and Mamie Zelma (Wallace) Carter. He married Lanta 'Pauline' Strunk on Oct. 10, 1947, in Johnston City, and she survives. Other survivors include three sons and daughters-in-law, Willie and Annette Carter of West Frankfort, Paul and Patti Carter of Irving, and Bobby and Laura Carter of West Frankfort; grandchildren, Amy and Steve Uhlry, Amanda and Lee Eddington, David Carter, Todd Carter, and Matthew Carter; great grandchildren, Alexa Uhlry, Camden Uhlry, Benjamin Carter and Madalynn Eddington; brothers, Odell, Treswell, Norwood, Robert and Billy; and sisters, Jeanette, Helen, Ethelyn and Elizabeth. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brother, Wyatt Carter, Jr. and Johnny Ray Carter; and three sisters, Mary Louise Phillips, Evelyn Lee Dodd and Linda Fay Carter. Mr. Carter was a member of the First Apostolic Church in Marion. He worked in construction as a carpenter. He was a 50-year member of the Carpenter Union where he served as business agent for several years. He served in the United States Army during World War II. Memorials may be made to the First Apostolic Church. Envelopes are available at the church and the funeral home or may be sent c/o Blue Funeral Home, PO Box 411, Marion, IL 62959.

Amanda M. Kahre

CHESTER -- Amanda Marie Kahre, 17, passed away at 12:52 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 22, 2004, near Chester. Amanda was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Chester. She was a senior at Chester High School, a member of the CHS Varsity Girls Basketball team, the high school swing choir 'Sound Effects,' Spanish Club, Pep Club and Senior Girl Scout Troop No. 230. She was born Nov. 4, 1986, in Chester, the daughter of Daryl and Vicki (Ardison) Kahre. She is survived by her parents, Daryl and Vickie Kahre; one brother, Matthew Kahre, all of Chester; paternal grandmother, Mildred Kahre of Steeleville, maternal grandparents, Peter and Glennys Ardison of Carlyle; aunts and uncles, Jan and Mike Wilson of Sparta, Becky and Greg Eaves and Peter Ardison of Collinsville and Edward Ardison of Florida. She was preceded in death by her paternal grandfather, Alfred Kahre. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 24, 2004, at the St. John Lutheran Church in Chester, with the Rev. Mark Willig officiating. Interment will be in Paradise Cemetery near Steeleville. Visitation will be held from 3 to 8 p.m. today, Sept. 23, 2004 and from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. Friday, Sept. 24, 2004, at Schroeder-McClure Funeral Chapel in Chester and from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Friday at St. John Lutheran Church. Memorial donations may be made to the Amanda Kahre Educational Assistance Fund at St. John Lutheran School or the St. John Lutheran School Endowment Fund or the Chester High School Music Department.

Jamie Dee Dorris Phoenix

AVA -- Jamie Dee Dorris Phoenix, 32, died at 11:21 p.m. Monday, Sept. 20, 2004, in St. Louis University Hospital. Services will be at 11 a.m. today in Wilson's Funeral Home in Ava, with Rick Sutton officiating. Visitation was after 6 p.m. Wednesday and will be from 7:30 to 11 a.m. today at the funeral home. Mrs. Phoenix was a business administrator at the Pinckneyville Correctional Center. She was a trustee of Ora Township and a member of the First Baptist Church of Sesser. She coached a Little League softball team. She was born May 26, 1972, in Pinckneyville, to James E. and Wanda F. Merkel Dorris. She married Ivan Bart Phoenix on June 19, 1999, in Benton. She is survived by her husband, Ivan Bart Phoenix of Ava; one daughter, Taylor Danae Cochrane of Ava; one stepson, Craig Allan Phoenix of Waterloo; her parents, James and Wanda Dorris of Sesser; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Steve and Benita Dorris and Brian and Pam Dorris, all of Sesser; her paternal grandmother, Lola Dorris of West Frankfort; her maternal grandmother, Mae Merkel of Sesser; her father- and mother-in-law, Irvin and DeFlain Phoenix of Ava; two brothers-in-law, Brett and wife Tammy Phoenix and Nathan and wife Susan Phoenix, all of Ava; and nine nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her grandfathers. Memorials may be made to Shriner's Hospital for Crippled Children.

Virginia Traylor

JONESBORO -- Virginia Traylor, 78, of Jonesboro, passed away Monday, Sept. 20, 2004, at home. She was born Aug. 30, 1926, in Otwell, Ind., daughter of Auther and Marjorie (Demotte) Breidenbaugh. She married Randall Traylor, March 5, 1948, in Otwell. He preceded her in death Jan. 9, 1967. She worked at Florsheim Shoe Factory for more than 30 years. Survivors include four daughters, Betty Traylor of Herrin, Cheryl Traylor of Herrin, Sherry Traylor of Herrin, and Rita Humphrey of Jonesboro; one son, Ross Traylor of Jonesboro; one grandson, Randy Humphrey of Anna; four great-grandchildren; six brothers, Horace, Ralph, Roger, Lowell, Jim and Norman Dillon, all of Indiana; one sister, Vivian Reed of Indiana; and many cousins. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Hileman Funeral Home in Jonesboro. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Friday, Sept. 24, 2004, at Harris Funeral Home in Petersburg, Ind., with visitation from 11 to 1 p.m. Interment will be in the Iva Cemetery. The family requests that memorials be made to Iva Cemetery Fund.

Annie Mae Edmonds

OLMSTED -- Annie Mae Edmonds, 64, died at 1 p.m. Monday, Sept. 20, 2004, at home. Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 26, in Holy City Church of God in Christ, located on Dr. Martin Luther King Drive in Cairo, with the Rev. James Bell officiating. Burial will be in Mount Zion Cemetery in Olmsted. Visitation will be form 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Heavenly Gates Funeral Home.

Annabelle Stonecipher

WALTONVILLE -- Annabelle Stonecipher, 78, died at 8:38 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 22, 2004, at Good Samaritan Regional Hospital in Mount Vernon. She was born to John and Nancy (Taylor) Hammond on Feb. 26, 1926, in Waltonville. She married Bert Stonecipher and in January 1987 he preceded her in death. She was a homemaker and a Protestant. Survivors include one son, John Ace Stonecipher of Waltonville; and one brother, Tom Leroy Hammond and wife Jean of Deltona, Fla. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 24 in Brick Cemetery in rural Ashley and those attending the service are requested to go directly to the cemetery. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. today, Sept. 23, at Newell Funeral Home in Waltonville.
