James Thomas 'Tom' Phillips
SPILLERTOWN -- James Thomas 'Tom' Phillips, 59, of Spillertown, was called away by our Lord at 7:13 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 23, 2004, at home surrounded by his family and friends. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 28, 2004, in Blue Funeral Home in Marion, with the Rev. Shorty Alsip officiating. Burial will be in Coal Bank Springs Cemetery. military rites will be held by VFW Post 1301 and American Legion Post 147. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Mr. Phillips was born on Sept. 17, 1945, in New Haven, to Thomas Morgan and Francis Elsie (Hayes) Phillips. He married Pamela Lee Rix on Dec. 14, 1981, in Topeka, Kan., and she survives. Other survivors include one son, Thomas Morgan Phillips of Marion; one daughter, Tiffany Renae Phillips of Spillertown; his mother, Francis Phillips of Mount Vernon; one sister and brother-in-law, Linda and Bill Brown of Princeton, Ind.; two brothers and one sister-in-law, Tim Phillips and Tony and Debbie Phillips and their son Charles, all of Mount Vernon; his father and mother-in-law, Stanley and Genevieve Rix of Marion; three brothers and sisters-in-laws, Gordon and Beverly Clark of Crab Orchard, Gail and Becky Stanley of Orient, and Hank and Melissa Yoast of Blairsville; several nieces and nephews; one great-niece; and two great-nephews. He was preceded in death by his father and one brother, Teddy Joe Phillips. Tom served his country for 12 years in the
Army. He retired from the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in 1999, where he worked for more than 17 years. He also enjoyed
hunting, fishing and working on small engines. He was a member of Parish Park Baptist Church.

MARION -- Joan P. Nienow, 70, of Marion, passed away at 1:20 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 24, 2004, in Heartland Regional Medical Center in Marion. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Nov. 29, 2004, in the Blue Funeral Home in Marion, with Pastor William Schmidt officiating. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 28, 2004, at the funeral home. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery

Mrs. Nienow was born on Feb. 2, 1934, in Chicago, to Clarence and Virginia (Woerle) Stell. She married Kenneth Nienow, and he survives. Other survivors include her sons, John Willes of Big Lake, Minn., Alvin Willes of Marion, and Michael Willes of Bartlett; her daughters, Pamela Peck of Mount Morris, Patricia Roth of Sheridan, Tina Corbitt of Yorkville and Michelle Halfpenny of Somonauk; 19 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; five sisters, Constance Valenti of Park Forest, Delores Kujawski of Glendale Heights, Beatrice Peters of Marion, Carolyn Thomas of Port St. Lucie, Fla., and Ruth Rolseth of West Chicago; and one brother, Norbert Wadsworth of Bullhead City, Ariz. She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Donald Stell; and one sister, Chereen Kelly. Mrs. Nienow attended of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. She was formerly a real estate broker, and she loved to spend time with her family, especially her grandchildren.

CHRISTOPHER -- Billy C. 'Rabbit' Shoemake, 80, died Thursday, Nov. 25, 2004, in Select Specialty Hospital in St. Louis. Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 29, 2004, in Faith Missionary Baptist Church, with Brother Bill Gholson officiating. Interment will be in Sunset Memorial in Du Quoin. Visitation will be after 6 p.m. Sunday and 8 to 9 a.m. Monday at Gilbert Funeral Home in Christopher and from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday at the church. Mr. Shoemake was a retired coal miner at Freeman No. 4. He was a Navy veteran of World War II. He was a member of Faith Missionary Baptist Church in Christopher, where he was also a trustee. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Herrin, the United Mine Workers of America and the American Legion in Christopher. He also belonged to Jolly Jills and Jacks. He was born on Nov. 26, 1923, in Herrin, to Bill Shoemake and Ottie Curtis. He married Joyce Tyner, and she survives. Survivors include his wife, Joyce Tyner, and three sons and one daughter-in-law, Andy and Bonnie Shoemake of Herrin and Randy and Greg Shoemake, both of Herrin. He also served as a loving father to Christie and husband Mark Collins of Herrin, Marsha and husband Ken Hughes of Carbondale, Nancy and husband Tom Bates of Swansea, Cathy and husband Don Shay of Carbondale, and Scott and Amy Shapkoff of Herrin. Other survivors include 13 grandchildren; three sisters, Hattie Girard of St. Louis, Odell Vandermuellen of Carterville and Bessie Brewster of Herrin; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and one sister.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Mrs. Varnum was a homemaker and a devoted mother and grandmother. She was a member of the First Pentecostal Church in Royalton. She was born on Oct. 3, 1910, in De Soto, to Richard and Rose (Loucks) Fann. She married Gus 'Tony' Varnum on Jan. 5, 1934, and he preceded her in death on Aug. 15, 1986. Survivors include three daughters and one son-in-law, Goldie Throgmorton of Anna, Ida Rose and Charlie Dixon of Johnston City, and Dollie 'Cookie' Carlson and fiance Jim Hoover of Fenton, Mich.; one son and daughter-in-law, Elmer Herbert 'Hoot' and Shirley Fann of Cilo, Mich.; 12 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; 13 great-great-grandchildren; three brothers, Floyd and Archie Fann of Hurst and Roy Fann of Crestview, Fla.; and one sister, Paradine Conroy of Herrin. Leo Everett Mattingly
HERRIN -- Leo Everett Mattingly, 83, died Wednesday, Nov. 24, 2004, at home with his family by his side. Services will be at 1 p.m. today in Van Natta Funeral Home, with the Revs. Don Colson and Brad Harlow officiating and military rites performed by the American Legion and VFW of Herrin. Burial will be in the Herrin City Cemetery. Visitation was from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Leo was born on June 8, 1921, to Lena (Zimmerman) Mattingly Anderson and Douglas James Mattingly. He married Betty F. (Robinson) Mattingly on March 23, 1947, and she preceded him in death in May 1993. He then married Peggy (Wickam) Bowlin Mattingly on June 26, 1998, and she survives. He worked for Illinois Central Gulf Railroad and retired after 25 years of service. Leo and Betty Mattingly began in the nursing home business in 1966. The business grew to three facilities and continued until 1997, when the facilities were sold and Leo retired. He was a veteran of World War II. Survivors include his wife, Peggy Mattingly; four children and their spouses, Leo E. Mattingly Jr., William J. and Christine Mattingly, David A. and Tina Mattingly, and Susan K. Mattingly South and Jimmy South; his grandchildren, Shannon Kay (Mattingly) Whitlock, Shelley Lynn (Mattingly) Mays, Joseph Michael Mattingly, Jonathon Lee Mattingly, Daniel Patrick Mattingly, Tori Marie Mattingly, Lance Allen Mattingly, Jeremiah South and David South; and five great-grandchildren, Dakota and Kaylee Whitlock, Ariel and Jessica Mays, and Shalynn South; and two sisters-in-law, Peggy and JoAnn Mattingly. MARION -- Louis Joseph Bacak, 90, of Marion, passed away at 5:55 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 25, 2004, in Heartland Regional Medical Center in Marion. Services will be held at 12:30 p.m. today in the Blue Funeral Home in Marion, with Pastor Art Donley officiating. Visitation will be held from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. today at the funeral home. Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 29, in Dundee Township Cemetery. Mr. Bacak was born on May 27, 1914, in Crystal Lake, to Frank and Mary (Kocenda) Bacak. He married Jean Louise Forester, and she survives. Other survivors include three daughters and two sons-in-law, Jill Larkin of Loves Park, Donna Ruth and Robert Huffstutler of Elgin, and Sandra and Joe Darling of Marion; four grandchildren, Amy Thompson, Kevin Larkin, Hope Castell and Megan Huffstutler; two great-grandchildren, Jackson and Courtney Larkin; and one sister, Tillie Finnell of Marengo. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers; and one sister. Mr. Bacak worked for the city of Elgin.
Jerald 'Pete' Pelvin
ELKVILLE -- Jerald 'Pete' Pelvin, 65, of Elkville, formerly of Grand Tower, died at 8:47 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 24, 2004, in Memorial Hospital of Carbondale, after a brief illness. Pete was born on June 6, 1939, to John and Kathryn (Vincent) Pelvin in Granite City. Pete was raised by his special uncle and aunt, Harry and Juel (Cripps) Vincent. Pete graduated from Shawnee High School on May 24, 1957. He then joined the Navy on Nov. 15, 1957. While he was in the Navy, he attended Fleet Sonar School. He went aboard the destroyer USS Blandy (DD 943) in 1958 and made rank of SOG-2 (E5) after four years in the Navy. Pete always talked about the service and the friends he met. He had kept in contact with his friend Dan Hauk. His friend Dave Powers preceded him in death. Pete's uncle, Harry Vincent, taught him the carpentry, electrical and plumbing trade. Pete loved this kind of work. He was a maintenance man in Grand Tower for many years until he moved to Elkville on Nov. 11, 1984. He then started working for Jerome Broski in Carbondale on rental property. Survivors include Belinda Nation (Pelvin) and their very special daughter, Marjorie Fern Pelvin; one sister, Faye Shaw of Metropolis; and many special nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles. Pete had many friends. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Robert and Anna Vincent; his parents, John and Kathryn Pelvin; and his special aunt and uncle, Harry and Juel Vincent. Services will be at 1 p.m. today at Crain Funeral Home Pleasant Grove Chapel, located on Old Route 13 between Carbondale and Murphysboro, with the Rev. John Cripps officiating. Interment will be in Pleasant Grove Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. today at the funeral home. MURPHYSBORO -- Donald H. Grapevine, 70, of Murphysboro, died at 2:20 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 24, 2004, at home after an illness. He was born on Feb. 21, 1934, to Benjamin and Ella Viola (Knicker-bocker) Grapevine, in Peoria. He married Minnie E. Higgerson- Cottom on Sept. 6, 1969, in Murphysboro. He retired from the U. S.
Army after 21 years of service and then retired from the U. S. Postal Service in Peoria after 20 years of service. He was a member and past commander of American Legion Post 127 in Murphysboro and was also a member of the VFW. Mr. Grapevine is survived by his wife, Minnie; two stepchildren, James Robert and wife Bertha Cottom of Oklahoma and Kathy Jones of Columbus, Ohio; one son-in-law, Rex and wife Judy Corwin of St. Louis; three granddaughters, Erica Babcott, Macie Corwin and Alicia Knickerman, all of St. Louis; his mother-in-law, Ruth Robinson of Murphysboro; two brothers and sisters-in-law, James and Sandra Grapevine of Middleburg, Fla., and Everett and Delores Grapevine of Springbay; three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Clara Bingamon of Norwood Park, Mary and Robert Waldorf of Middleburg, and Kathryn and Marvin Newton of Gatewood, Mo.; two sisters-in-law, Iris and husband Jack Eastwood of Gilbertville, Ky., and Shirley Grissom of Murphysboro; and several nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his special friends, Mike and Pam Hennesey of Peoria, and his beloved poodles, Samantha and Brady, who were his constant companions, spending time outdoors with him and begging for his attention. He will be missed by his family and many friends, as his joking and teasing will no longer keep them laughing and put smiles on their faces. She was born on Aug. 8, 1913, to Miles Jennings and LeMaude Stokes Jennings in the Mount Pleasant community near Anna. She was married to Ray Korte for 45 years, until his death on Nov. 18, 1979. She was a member of the New Hope Baptist Church in Massac County for 65 years, serving the church as a pianist, Sunday school teacher, member of the choir and the Women's Missionary Society. She and her husband, Ray, were lifelong members of the Massac County Farm Bureau and founding members of the Massac County Saddle Club. She was a founding member of the George's Creek Homemakers; served as a board member of the Farm Bureau Federation; and was active for many years in the Massac County Hospital Auxiliary, the American Quilters' Society and the Metropolis Quilters Club. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 28, 2004, in the New Hope Baptist Church in Massac County, with visitation after 1 p.m. at the church. Paul McGinnis, Marlin Mitchell and Darian Rottmann will officiate. Interment will follow in the New Hope Cemetery. She lived in San Francisco and New York while her husband, Roy, served in World War II. She and Roy traveled worldwide. Burnette loved to play bridge and enjoyed animals, mostly dogs, her entire life. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Marion and a former member of the Fortnightly, Hospital Auxiliary and the Delta Theta Tau Sorority. JONESBORO -- Lorn S. Johnson, 81, of Metropolis, formerly of Jonesboro, passed away Thursday, Nov. 25, 2004, in Southgate Health Care Center in Metropolis. He was born on Jan. 4, 1923, in Cypress, the son of Adam and Dollie (Alexander) Johnson. He married Bertha G. Helm on June 26, 1943, in Caruthersville, Mo. She preceded him in death Feb. 17, 1975. He later married Kathryn Land in 1978, in Jackson, Mo. He worked as a mechanic for Atlas Plastic and was a pastor. He was a member of the Conran Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife, Kathryn Johnson of Metropolis; two daughters, Lorna Jackson of New York and Yvette Johnson of Idaho; brother, Clyde Johnson of Leasberg, Mo.; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Irene Stanley and Sybil Hurley and two brothers, James and Claude Johnson. Services will be at 2 p.m. today in the chapel of Hileman Funeral Home, with the Rev. Tim Abanathy officiating. Interment will be in Jonesboro Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1 to 2 p.m. today in the funeral home.
Bonnie A. Grass-Bauman
SOUTHERN ILLINOIS -- Bonnie A. Grass-Bauman, 83, of Southern Illinois, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 24, 2004, in Herrin Hospital. She was born on May 8, 1921, in Buncombe, the daughter of Otis and Mary (Jenkins) White. She married Elmer 'Red' Grass in 1938, in St. Genevieve, Mo. He preceded her in death in 1980. She later married George Bauman in 1981, and he preceded her in death in 1997. She was a retired nurse's assistant from the Kankakee State Hospital. She and Red Grass also owned and operated Anna Sheet Metal Works for many years. She was a volunteer for the Marion Hospital Auxiliary, TIP Home Health in Johnson County and Senior Citizens Center in Marion. She was a member of the Johnson County Home Extension and St. Joseph Catholic Church in Marion. Survivors include son, Roger Grass and wife, Pat of Kankakee and their children Jeff and wife, Lorraine Grass, Jamey and wife, Anja Grass and their children Josh and Payton Grass, Amy and husband, Mat Pepin; son, Norman and wife, Judy Grass of Jonesboro and their daughter, Brianna Grass. Bonnie was from a family of 10 children and has one sister surviving, Faye and husband, Junior Pierce of Corning, Ark. She was preceded in death by four brothers and four sisters. Services will be at noon Monday in Basler Funeral Home in St. Genevieve. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday in Hileman Funeral Home in Jonesboro. Hileman Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

KELL -- Anna Mooney, 92, of Kankakee, formerly of Kell, died Thursday, Nov. 25, 2004, in Miller Health Center in Kankakee. Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday in Osborn Funeral Home in Dix, with Jonathan Schnautz officiating. Burial will be in Antioch Cemetery. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday in the funeral home.
